Title: Eastside Hockey Manager 2015
Post by: Nefaro on March 26, 2015, 02:33:05 PM
Looks like they're finally creating a new version!  O0

Evidently supposed to be on Steam early access.

Doesn't seem to be everything in right now, but it's good news.

I thought the 2007 version's UI sucked so hopefully that will get a lot of improvement.

Note that the Roster update mods (also logos) can be had in this vicinity:

Evidently works with the early access version.   Needed for proper roster names and such, since no NHL licensing right now.

Well.... the game looks good, but man the color/background combo is hard on the eyes....  But I love Sport Management Sims and the Eastside was a great one years ago.

Also, I picked up Draft Day Sports College B-Ball 3 at 1/2 off and Starting Order 6.  I did not upgrade Football Manager this year as I have as of yet to put in series time into it...

What's funny is I just fired up EHM 2007 last weekend and have been playing since.  I just completed my first season and first draft.  I was all ready to continue my season and then THIS comes along.  I just bought it.  I'll give it a little spin but I may sit on it awhile and let them develop it a bit more before I start a real game.

Let us know what condition it's in.

I'm guessing they just started from the old 2007 version engine, the way it looks.   May even still have the same 4:3 fixed ratio right now.

My biggest concern is some of the UI and functionality.  2k7 could be a real pain in the ass when it came to sorting players, assigning scouts, and other such stuff.  Seemed like I had to do additional customization work to every roster table, just to add my scout's ability estimates to use for sorting, setting up lines, etc.

Really hope they apply some streamlining to some of that stuff.

I started a game as the GM of Arizona (random choice).  It doesn't look officially licensed as there are no logos and I don't recognize any of the players.  That's not a big deal.  There is a very fanatical following of this game so, by tomorrow probably, there will be logos and official rosters.

If you've played Football Manager or EHL 07 then you can easily wheel your way around the interface.  The sorting problem appears fixed and now seems to function like FM.

I've only played about an hour but so far so good.  I haven't seen the trade or game engine in action yet and will report after I hit those areas.  Basically it's a nice FM/EHM07 hybrid.

It was only $11 and it's being produced by a company with a pretty solid track record.  I think this will end up being a winner.

I was HUGELY burned by Front Page Sports Football...so I'm out of testing sims.

I'll wait for release and see the results of others play time.

Yeah JD, that was/is a disaster.  I almost pulled the trigger on that one and am so glad I waited.

This one feels right though.  It's close enough to EHM 2007 that it's pretty easy to navigate. On top of that you get a sprinkling of Football Manager to add depth and straighten out the UI.  Once the real players/leagues/teams are implemented or modded in the immersion factor will soar.  FPS will be a distant memory once this becomes a fully operational Death Star.

I posted a link to the official roster mod for this, earlier in the thread.  I believe there are logo mods there too, or the old ones for 2k7 still work for this one.  All at The Blue Line site, but you may already know this.

Good to hear some of the UI weaknesses have been addressed.  I definitely plan on getting this soon, once the mood strikes.

Just an FYI for everyone, the Hockey Manager game is normally $15 on Steam but if you already own the latest Football Manager, they offer a discount.  I'm guessing that's why yours was only $11?

Thanks for the quick impressions!

Real Rosters install tutorial:

Easy copy & paste job and then selecting the proper database dropdown when starting a new game.

Thanks!  I somehow missed that when I went through this thread the first time.

The $11 is a 20% off price because of it's current "Early Access" state.

Looks pretty good, however the UI is a turn off.  I hope that will change or will be modded.

Now that I have the real rosters, logos, and facepacks installed the game feels so much better.

As far as the UI goes, there are some of the familiar kinks.  The developer is actively seeking out improvement suggestions so I expect to see some improvements in the next patch .

For an early access game it's very playable. A no brainer if you're a hockey or GM type games fan.

Just an update since the NHL playoffs start tonight.  I've been playing this almost exclusively since it came out and have to say they've done a great job so far.  They developers have been very responsive to bug fixes and suggestions.  They seem to be patching/updating the game every 2 weeks.  After adding the roster update, facepacks,  and logo packs from ehmtheblueline.com, the game feels and plays like a finished product easily worth twice the $15 asking price.

If you are into sports management sims at all this one is a no brainer.

I plan to start a new career before long, but hoping for some more updates to go through while I wait.

I almost very nearly pulled the trigger on this last night - but even at £10 I was struggling to justify it. I do like spreadsheet sports sims having a few editions of Football Manager and OOTP - but as I know absolutely nothing about Hockey, I dissuaded myself at the last minute.

Hell, I haven't even picked up that rugby game I saw on Steam - and I am right into rugby.

Maybe I'm just becoming sensible! :o

Hockey plays rather similar to your football (aka soccer).

The terminology, size of the field/ice and such are different but it's not a completely different game like baseball or our football.  Five dudes trying to move & pass the puck up towards the opposing goal, to put it in.

It has North American style contracts, waivers, salary caps and rookie drafts.  Similar to baseball but not as diluted with all the exceptions.  I think this is a good thing.  Especially the draft, since that's something I enjoy quite a bit in these games.

Keep in mind it's Early Access so they will probably be dropping a patch every once in awhile.  I believe their latest big one fixed a couple of the big complaints about the match engine providing too much scoring (reportedly) so it's quite playable.

This Football Manager addict started a series on this new Early Access version of EHM, with little familiarity of the sport.  Although he's familiar with FM over the years so he's probably still a bit familiar with this older version of SI's game engine.  He seems to have learned the sport fairly easily and has been enjoying it (after about 18 vid episodes and in the middle of his second season):

For those that had past interest...currently on sale for $10...looks like fhm2 delayed again from ootp, initial plans were release by end of May.  So if interested in hockey, this game still the only option.

I have been playing OOTP since 2002, and have been active on their forums since that time.

But...their hockey sim sucks. They never did work the bugs out.

EHM, or the newest iteration of that game is already dramatically better. Having support from SIGames makes all the difference in the world.

Get EHM 2015, and screw the OOTP version.

I've not tried it since they finished the new EHM version.  There were many reports of the opposing AI teams being pushovers though.  But that may be from people who've played EHM for a decade or more.

I haven't really read that, but maybe in places I don't visit....although I haven't played the new version a ton, don't recall the original version being a cakewalk, but I also wouldn't classify myself as an expert in the game either.  If your a hockey fan and want a career game, you really only have this and/or FHM to choose from....FHM is coming along, but will likely need a few more versions before really becoming established like OOTP....either way, still think EHM totally worth $5 if your craving a hockey sports sim, especially during the Stanley Cup playoffs.
