Exciting times! (http://www.gog.com/galaxy?publicbeta)
Click the link and by all means sign up first, but after that, I urge you to watch the video. It sounds awesome. When it's fully released Valve are going to have some explaining to do...
I have to take the time to watch the video, but at first blush, I find it odd that anyone who has beef with steam, would want to use something like this. Its still a client. Sure, its optional and "DRM free", but then it does not really offer developers the same benefits that the steam platform does. As such, I think the library will always be limited.
GOG seems to be taking what is so great about steam and simply applying it to their model. A good idea, but hardly anything revolutionary.
Even if I didn't have any problems with Steam - and I do - I still think it's foolish to put all your eggs in one basket. Galaxy has many of the advantages of Steam minus some of Steam's disadvantages. There's certainly no cause to dismiss it out of hand and I remain pretty excited about it.
Actually, this does rather sound like "Steam, but better". Thanks for the heads-up Huw!
Depending on how this goes I may start buying more games from GOG. Looking forward to how this pans out. I don't mind having games that I own on Steam, but I don't really like buying from them.
I got the impression that this GOG client was primarily intended to make multi-player matchmaking for old games (that no longer have such support) easier.

That would be worth installing it for me anyway...

Right. Imagine if you could actually play
Silent Hunter 2 on your computer while someone else played
Destroyer Command and the two games actually linked up the way Ubisoft promised they would. Ah, if only...
Maybe I'm missing something but it just looks like a way to buy and install GOG games which means you are still limited to the games GOG sells. So, very few new games and a lot of old graphics and such.
Don't get me wrong, I have a bunch of GOG games, but I still buy far more new games.
I think you can use it with non-GOG games too, just as with Steam. Also I assume they're making a push to sell a broader range of games now that Galaxy is available, but time will tell of course.

Impossible. No way AAA developers are going to release "drm free" versions of their games. The catalog for Galaxy is inherently going to be limited. The very thing that is good about it is the very thing that is going to hold it back.
That's an incorrect use of the word impossible, Jarhead. Maybe publishers will jump on board, maybe they won't. Only time will tell.

Yep. We'll see...
I have about a dozen GOG games...I might try it eventually.

I think it only supports multi-player for a very small handful of titles right now. Stuff I don't play IIRC. Don't expect much.
No biggie.
I actually counted 25 games in my GOG account. I don't know how the hell I undercounted my stash by 50%. :-[
Looks like they 'unbundled' some of the titles, separating things like MMO 1 from MOO 2 and 3, even if bought together. That brings my GOG stash to 85 titles, of which I have yet to play most.
I guess calling game hoarding 'the Steam Sickness' isn't really fair to Steam anymore... :-\

True, my GOG stash says 138 titles. I'm hoarding.
Dear Fat Baby Jeebus. I'm a rank amateur compared to you cat ladies.
Well, I ended up getting a free download copy of Witcher 3 with my (soon to arrive) GTX 970, so I'll be trying out Galaxy when it comes time to download that monstrosity from GOG.

How come when I purchase a brand new GPU all I get is some crappy benchmark software and sometimes some racist/racing/whatever game...
And yet nearly anyone else who purchases even an older GPU these days gets a free copy of Witcher 3??? :'(

i almost bought the Nvidia GTX970 that came with this deal, but I ended up getting the EVGA one which was about $60 cheaper, so I figured it balanced out.
I received an email from GOG yesterday asking me to join, so I clicked to sign up. It told me they were approving requests in 'batches' and it might be some time before I get instructions to download.
This morning I received another email with said instructions to download. Installed and looks like everything in my (small) library is there. I'd already installed most of them in a separate folder because you have to, of course, download directly from their site to do so first, but this is like Steam apparently where you can install through Galaxy. So I guess I need to uninstall and delete that folder first. I'll get to it sooner or later.

I got a code for a free copy of a recent Batman/Arkham game when I bought my latest GPU.
But when I entered my code, it didn't give me shit. So I had to pester Nvidia customer service to get it fixed, which they eventually did after I had to scan a pic of my code voucher and email it to them.
I then ended up playing for the game for about five minutes and giving up due to console port sickness. :-\

Hmmm...well then, looks like you're not buying the right brand? ???
Just a heads up:
Look out for PUPs claiming to be GOG Galaxy Client (https://blog.malwarebytes.org/fraud-scam/2015/05/look-out-for-pups-claiming-to-be-gog-galaxy-client/?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social)
QuoteIn less than 30 hours after Good Old Games (GOG) announced that its fully optional client, GOG Galaxy, has entered the open beta stage, we have already seen some posts online of download locations for the client outside the GOG.com domain.
We can only ask you, dear Gamer, to exercise caution when visiting and downloading from such sites as they might be serving a file you don't want installed on your system.
Haven't had issues with mine thank goodness...went directly through their site to grab Galaxy. Even bought a couple of games through it. I like the GUI for Galaxy better than Steam's.
Okay, curiosity is getting the better of me. Downloading now!
