Title: Then the FRIDAY comes
Post by: MetalDog on May 08, 2015, 06:01:43 AM

It's been a long, hot, week where I am.  I will be glad to see it end and give me an opportunity to sit with a game and get some things accomplished!  I have no doubt there will be at least one round of Civ IV BtS mp.  Beyond that, the only thing I am certain of, is fretting over whether I feel like mowing the lawn.  Bet I don't do it ;)

Tonight begins a seven-day stretch of work for me (and I know we're busy pretty much every night this next week), so I doubt I'll get much gaming in this weekend.  What time I do have will probably be spent with either Birth of the Federation (Ultimate Mod 5), Rome II: Wrath of Sparta, Sovereignty, or Age of Wonders 3.

Leipzig and CM:BS PBEMs for certain...

Little bit of Tragedy Looper if only to try, again, to suss out the rules without the unhelpful assistance of the horribly opaque rule book.  The thing that makes me really want to slap it -- oop, another game I want to slap -- is that it seems to KNOW it's opaque and doesn't quite know how to fix that.

And the boy wants to make breakfast for mother on Sunday...I am fully prepared to deck out my kitchen -- and a 50-foot radius -- as a HazMat area.

Best of the Weekend,

Jim

CM:BS pbem with UCG
Project Cars - had to spunk the cash on this bad boy. I'm hoping for something with a bit more soul. I love Assetto Corsa and rFactor2 - but they do feel "empty" in a way...they're just missing something
State of Decay - hugely drawn to this game - and the more I understand how to do things, the more I'm drawn to it
Far Cry IV or GTA V - one of them (or both if time allows)

Sunday is Mother's Day here in the States. So in honor of my Dearly Departed, I thought I should play a game my mother would like. It couldn't be a wargame. If mom were to play Combat Mission, she would insist on the Capt. going out to talk the Germans into leaving their bunkers and then offer to wash their Tiger tanks on the way out of town for them. If it was TW, she would invest all her tech in Chocolate Brownies and win over Attila by making him Sunday dinner. Though the deal might go south when she insist he wash his hands before eating. No it would have to be a RPG. A game where you can go out and meet new people and help them while occasionally making incredibly biased judgements about them. I can hear her say, "Don't just sit in front of that computer, go outside and play" as she sits in front of TV watching Concentration. And the best game at going outside I can think of is Skyrim. Mom would love Skyrim. Everywhere you go you meet the same people doing and saying the same things at the same time of day, just like in real life. Mom would be great in Skyrim. She wouldn't want to be a queen or a jarl but would make a damn fine Inn-Keeper. She could cook for 30+ people, would be nice to everyone, even those snooty people from Riften, and wouldn't mind if Dad stunk-up the cellar with Bear skins and Wolf pelts. In fact kill a deer, and Mom would take the hide and make a hat, coat, and 14 pairs of shoes out of it. Anything left over, she'd knit a new loincloth for one of the Giants living outside of town. My bed would ALWAYS be made, even after just getting up from 12 hours of sleep just like in the game. Though she would never approve of Lydia and I staying in the same room even if she did keep her armor all night. Her Seared Slaughterfish would be to die for. And she would keep my Glass Sword polished. Seriously, how do you kill anything with a GLASS sword? Wouldn't it break? While she wouldn't like me becoming a Werewolf, it'd be OK as long as I didn't hang around the wrong sort of people. And my adventuring pack would always include a toothbrush, deordorant, and clean underwear along with the Grilled Leeks and Vension Stew. I could kill a Dragon and win her a castle but she would be just as happy with one of those shacks in the woods. And knowing my Mother, in no time she'd have every Sabre Cat and Dire Wolf in the area as best friends. And post "Watch-Out For Bear" signs everywhere. So this Sunday I will wash behind both ears before sitting down to play Skyrim and think of my Mother. And say "Sir" and "Mam" to all the snooty Riften scum. And give a gold piece to a drunken beggar or two sitting in his own filth. And help somebody. Because it's what Mom would enjoy. Now Dad...... O0

War Plan Orange?  Man, you don't see that pop on these lists very often!  I wish I had bought that game when it was on sale.

I fully intend to continue to explore Take Command and SoW.  I'm also feeling the pull of Combat Mission; I've barely scratched the surface of both Black Sea and the Syria one.  Or maybe Wargame: Red Dragon.  Something like that.

Finally, I'd like to get some time in with ARMA 3.

Kind of an ambitious list for what is essentially a short weekend.

Was really hoping I would be playing Galactic Civilizations 3 all weekend but after owning it for only 2 days its already been uninstalled. I'm still in a space 4x mood, so there is going to be some (maybe a lot) of Distant Worlds. Its also been a few months since I played Elite or Skyrim, so they might see some play time as well. I'm really interested in trying out a few of the Skyrim mods that where steam paid mods that are now free on the Nexus.

I want to put the finishing touches on my Command scenario but I've been trying to do that for the last 3 weeks and I still have been finding things to add or change.

Been crushing stuff in Marvel Heroes online.

Has been a bonus XP event for Avengers characters and, as an Action RPG, it doesn't require a lot of thought or time commitment to jump in whenever I want some simple wreckage.

As for me, it'll be some CMBS PBEM and it sounds like Jim will be sending me some Liepzig turns. If I can get sufficiently recharged to want to play something solo I'm not quite sure what that will be. I might have to dig through some neglected games that I haven't given much time to lately like Flashpoint Campaigns or Steam and Iron.

War Plan Orange has a lot less micromanagement then WITP AE.  I can bang out turns in half hour or less. It's an interesting game in that you have to use cruisers, destroyers and subs to scout because planes in this era are almost useless.  Find his fleet and then have a Pacific "Jutland" battle. It's cool because in the 1922 scenario you have Pre-Dreadnoughts and Battleships, Battlecruisers. So if your into naval history you will see a lot of early 20th century late 19th century ships in the OOB.  If your going to play it go PBEM the AI is not very good.

Whelp I had a pretty good MP run in King of the Hill in ARMA 3 until my ping decided to go into the thousands and I got booted.  One bad thing about Hawaii is our internet is teh suxxor.

So I put in a little time with Operation Flashpoint Dragon Rising.  Man alive but do I suck at these infantry games.  At any rate, I've owned it for a while now and I'm hankering for some SP action, so I figured I'd give the campaign a try.

A totally awesome session, with long thought out marriage plans coming to fruition, dukedoms been ceded to me, the holy emperor stealing titles from me and giving them to his son, plans to kill the son, and a plan for independence, expansion to another country - all in all had a great time

I had a botched root canal last Dec.  The thing got infected and finally extracted yesterday and they put in a bone graft as well.  Can't sleep so I've been doing a marathon session of Hearts of Iron III as the UK .  Amazing how this game can just suck me in and make me feel a part of the history.  It's Sept 1942. I invested heavily into bombing tech and now have 19 sqns of Lancasters hitting German and Italian controlled cities.   I've pushed the Axis out of N. Africa and taken Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily.  I've lost Malaya, Hong Kong and Singapore to the Japanese but I've managed to get a sizable  force of Royal Marines and Gurkhas in place.  We stopped them along the Irriwaddy and are now pushing them out of Burma and back to the Siamese border.

(God damn you autocorrect!  Why would you turn sizable to disable?)

Just really Project Cars. It wasn't even on my radar - until I noticed it was ready to buy.

Superb game and I had an absolute blast with Bathhurst today.

Superb fun.

I would laugh if it didn't hurt and I hadn't been eating soup since Friday  :P

Had a great session of Distant Worlds this afternoon. One planet (re)retaken, couple of planets taken by a third party before I could get to them but one of my biggest threats knocked down to size at the cost of a slightly damaged fleet.

Got a few hours of Cities Skyline in last night. Epic traffic problems of my own making are going to make it hard to stick with long term. Cities has quickly become one of my go to games to just turn my mind off and relax with, preferably with a glass of whiskey or scotch.

imo - over the weekend I had with it - it's a better overall single player experience to AC.

AC is a better "sim". You can really feel what the car is going to do in AC. pCars - not so. But the overall racing experience was imo much better

Let's invite Barthheart and GJK over and play a boardgame.  I've always wanted to try Diplomacy.

Diplomacy great fun... with the right group.... ie cut-throat basturds!  :knuppel2:

This weekend was totally off the grid. Went to a old friends cottage to open it up fer the summer. Arrived around 5 PM on Thursday and proceed to drink half my beer for the entire weekend... Oops!

Friday was gloriously warm for the time of year up there so we got all our chores done and started drinking again early. More guys arrived for dinner and much drinking was done. Good thing they brought more beer.

Saturday was Biblical rain all day and fricking cold... errr... seasonal weather. So much board gaming was done. First was DVG Modern Naval Battles which saw Britain vs. Taiwan vs. Argentina vs. Germany vs. India. The Indian Navy prevailed. Many beers were drunk.

Then we broke out Academy Games Fief 1429 for the first time. This was a game I kickstarted. Really great production value. Beautiful to look at. Think of it as Line in the Sand in 15th century France. Or as a season of Game of Thrones. You need to gain control of fiefs  and bishoprics through combat and diplomacy for your family then try to become King or Pope. There were marries of convenience and assassinations, back stabs, plagues, famines and epic battles. My house, who controlled the King, in concert with my Queens House won an Alliance victory. What a great game. Everyone wants to try it again. More beer was consumed.

After that is was massive steaks on the BBQ and watching the extended version of Stripes with more beer.

Sunday was a quick game of FRAG! before breakfast, then clean and pack up to go home. Fantastic weekend. Gonna be a slow day today though....  :)

Here's the game on BGG:
http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/152470/fief-france-1429

My game group is mostly into wargames so we may have been a lot more aggressive than regular players are but I think it fits the time period. There's a lot of moving parts but it's not that complicated by wargaming standards.
Next time we play we're going to add in some more expansion packs like Crusades, Teutonic and Templar Knight orders for even more chaos.  :D

Congrats Sir Slash!

I'm in Ottawa. The cottage is about 3.5 hrs drive NW from here.
We do a cottage opening, closing and usually one more during the summer.
These are in addition to our yearly January Guyz Weekends.
We've been gaming/drinking together for about 35 years.

It definitely needs the right crowd and I'd say at least 5 players, but I've only managed the one game so far.

Ah, those guys. Yeah, they can be nasty if you aren't equipped too well. Their own auto shotguns and a couple of headshots make fast work of them, though.
