Title: Thoughts?
Post by: steve58 on May 13, 2015, 07:26:38 AM
...just curious what my fellow Grogheads think of this logo.

(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi186.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fx14%2Flangev%2FSS%2520logo_zpsrzivwwua.jpg&hash=7f8fdfc819dc1d4eaf68f6a12327ec1ec8d59ad0)

I'll post more on it later, but just wanted to get some of your reactions to it first.

I think it is a pretty dreadful logo. I saw it the other day and couldn't believe simply southern is using it

I figured people with some interest in history would instantly get it.  One of my sisters was visiting another of my sisters down in Georgia and came back with a T-shirt with the logo on it.  What the heck was Simply Southern thinking?

So this is accidental?? Both the SS t-shirt in Walmart and the Simply Southern logo? That can't be possible. Is 70 years that much time to be removed from those events? To think - I felt my faith in humanity had bottomed out.

I agree with Brant - there's no way that Walmart knew what that was. No way.

There were several symbols that were used by the Germans which were perverted from older sources. In a way I'm glad these are being reclaimed. For instance the color pink wasn't considered effeminate until the Germans started using triangles to flag homosexuals. Today it's a banner of pride.

Part of me wishes that we could reclaim those symbols for what they really stood for. Part of me says "never forget" and that should include the symbols.

I suspect the tide of history and short memory will eventually wash over all this. Think of WWI as our generation relates to it. We, as a historical wargaming community, are aware of a lot of history of WWI. Yet to us it's almost ancient history. My dishwasher is a Bosch. There was a time when "the bosch" were our enemies. Today, it's just another well-made German product. I suspect that in another 50 years many of those symbols will be about the same.

The dude with the atrociously named retail store, however, has to go.

MTV as we know it hasn't existed in 20 years. That makes me sad because if was awesome once...cutting edge in many ways and the harbinger of things cool.

I think LB hit the nail on the head. For most of the world 75 years ago is ancient history. Couple that with large parts of the world that were not directly assaulted by Hitler and you have the makings of the Hitler Underoos Shop. Still doesn't mean thatpeople should not be awoken from their ignorance though.

Not to mention that the totenkopf pre-dates the Nazis, even in the German military.  The swastika is thousands of years old.  That being said, copies of Nazi designed totenkopfs and swastikas is an entirely different matter.  Also use of the SS sig runes have no excuse, the same with any pseudo-religious Nazi use of runes.  Ignorance of history is no excuse.

In college I had a great Western civilization course that included a unit on WWII taught by a 75 year old professor originally from Norway. He gave great lectures and was a soldier in Norway when the Germans invaded. His lectures were so emotional and powerful - it's hard to describe. More like 25 years. I hate to say it, but Beavis and Butt-Head in 1992 or so was the harbinger of the end of MTV. Once they realized that shows other than actual music videos were popular, that kind of killed it. That and Yo! MTV Raps.

Being awoken from ignorance requires effort, though. Those idiots on the FB page that are gushing over it and accusing people of pointing out that their logo might possibly be changed because it resembles the logo of the terror arm of one of the most monstrous regimes in world history is akin to giving Southern Shite an open door to legal action...my Gawd, those women are flucking idiots. In 3rd year, I took Russian from a Polish guy, who lived in eastern Poland when the Nazis & Soviets took it.  His family got moved to Siberia and he learned Russian.  He had great stories.  He also fought in the Israeli War of Independence, more great stories.  In 4th year an old retired German doctor audited my Military Studies course.  As it turned out, he was in the Heer on the Eastern Front.  I can't recall if he was at Kursk or Stalingrad, but I do remember him saying that his General defied Hitler by ordering a retreat, and that he was alive because of that.
