Weekend came early for me this week. As of 5pm PST Wednesday I'm on vacation until Monday. Spent all afternoon today playing
Elite. Started playing around noon and the next thing I know its 6 in the evening. Finally started branching out from the starting area. Bought a Hauler early this week. and its already paid for itself and then some. Closing in on what I would need to buy and equip a Cobra Mk 3.
If I can tear myself away from Elite, I have
CMANO,
Cities Skyline,
EUIV, and
Distant Worlds games to continue.
I may also break out and start a new game of
Steel Wolves but that will require some re-reading of the rules.
I have a Single Player Civ IV BtS Duel going against Napoleon. I have a lead and we are in the last 35 Turns of the game. Nappy declared on me and took back the one city I had taken from him. He threw over 75 units in to the fight in the initial assault. I held, but, lost tons of materiel. Once the Turn flipped, I loaded the survivors on Galleons and fled back to my own continent.
I am attempting to pick off his navy as it comes across. I also have a goodly size home defense force. The problem is, I also own four islands with one city apiece. I worry that he will pick them off before I can mount a defense. In any case, it's only 35 Turns. I have ICBM's, he is ahead of me in Tech AND army composition (upgrades). Here's to holding out -fingerscrossed-
I will continue playing Civilization 5 as my main game. I have two games going on but i will focus on my Alexander the Great campaign. The game is growing on me even if it think that Civilization 3 is superior in different aspects. The current scenario i am playing now is much less historical than the one in Civ 3. The game seems to be much easier as well (though sometimes i get crazy with Civ3). Taking cities however is an extremely difficult undertaking...
Otherwise i think i'll play Birth of the Federation with Ultimate 5 mod (thanks Martok) and maybe some HPS Alexandrian Wars. Horizon is tempting me as well but i am not sure i'll have the time. ;)
Mother in Law is visiting this weekend so probably very little for me. If I do get an opportunity it will probably be X Rebirth.
Games in favour just now are The Witcher 3 and pCars. There will likely be some Assetto Corsa and my pbem CM:BS with UCG...contact has (at last) been made!
Probably just more Ultimate Mod 5 for Birth of the Federation (hope you have fun with it, Anguille!). I've gotta pack for my move (not far, just the next town over), so I likely won't have a ton of time for gaming this weekend.
Good luck against the Corsican, MetalDog! :)
(I have to ask, though...galleons *and* ICBM's? ??? )
I played some Star Wars Imperial Assault with my daughter last night (the tutorial mission, twice). Great fun but there's a lot of moving parts. Also the Heroes can wipe the floor with the Imperials, at least in the set-up they give for the tutorial. Maybe that was the intention.
I've also been playing a bit of Civilization V, as Venice, which I've never played before. Civ V always struck me as a "MINE" game. That is, you see a choice piece of territory and you cry out, "MINE" and plop a Settler on it. If the AI puts a city there before you, you say "MINE" and attack them to conquer the city (maybe the rest of their cities just to show 'em they can't take YOUR property). Venice is an entirely different mindset in the Civ V universe and I've had great fun playing them thus far.
I'm going to do some more Ottoman Sunset for my AAR, then will probably do some B-29 and B-17 as well (both for AARs). Possibly some other board games too.

GalCiv III and Rebuild:Gangs of Deadville (1.0 is out later today)

Yeah...about that. The only way I was going to stay competitive with Nappy was to build a large enough army and navy to deter invasion. And I am of the mindset that it is better to upgrade an existing unit than to disband it and build anew. The problem with upgrading is that it is VERY expensive. Especially when you have a boatload of obsolete units and limited Gold. It's so bad that when I lost Lyons, there were still three Macemen defending the city. The reasoning behind THAT move is that Macemen are the last unit that has the ability to get the City Attack buff. I was hoping to include the Macemen in future attacks to get their experience up enough to max out the City Attack buffs available to them and THEN upgrade. A three promotion City Attack Mechanized Infantry would have been a fearsome thing!

i need to play Civ IV more
I agree! I'd even offer my services to helping you get along. We can mp and chat while on Steam. Worked smashingly well for me and bob in Warlock. Although, he already had a good handle on the game.
across my entire portfolio Civ II is probably my most played, that feeling you get when you know the intricacies of a game, like you know about the City bonus - i wouldnt have had a clue, i need to upto my armpits in a game like that - im there with CKII but whenever i play that the sun comes up unexpectedly!

I think the first mission is an intentionally easy one for the heroes. It's the same for
Descent, which is it's mechanical predecessor.
I haven't played
Imperial Assault yet. It's been sitting in my "to play" stack, staring at me. The way the missions are set up & chosen is much different than the fairly linear ones in
Descent. The latter's stock campaign scenarios seemed to ramp up in difficulty over the first two or three scenarios, regarding heroes. After that it could get tough. Of course, some of that depends upon the synergies between the hero's abilities and how effective the Keeper's own class level-ups are.
If you ever feel like playing it solitaire, there is a set of nice Co-Op rules on BGG that were ported from the Descent variant of same, IIRC. They use a small deck of cards to run the Keeper's units. If I use them, I'll probably just use the variant cards I have printed for Descent since they're probably the same other than the Star Wars art.
Going to start a Japanese campaign in Order of Battle - Pacific Assault after playing through fhe tutorials for 5 hours. I'm decent with the ground and air combat bits, less so with the naval combat bit. May also play some Victory at Sea. And maybe some BOMB and IL21946.
We kept having "hey, waitaminute" moments when we were playing SW Imperial Assault. Namely, I had selected the Wookie and the Soldier heroes; the Soldier has a 'blast' ability that comes from surges. My daughter bunched up her Stormtroopers and I ended up killing one and hitting the other two for two hits each (Stormtroopers can only take three hits before they're goners).
Only thing is, Stormtroopers, when adjacent to another Stormtrooper, can reroll an attack die, so there's reasons to bunch them up.
The Wookie is a beast in melee combat. We switched sides and my daughter charged the Wookie and slaughtered my troopers. I think the most damage either of us did to the heroes was six hits, and they both could take 10 each.
I really like what little i know of the Campaign. As you said it's not linear because I think results from a battle influence which one you play next, sort of a CYOA feel to it (no choice, but there's branching paths, and that's awesome). It was also my understanding that DOOM: The Boardgame came first (I own it), then Descent descended from that (I don't own Descent), and then SWIA is even further descended from them.
What's not terribly awesome is the plethora of figure packs you can buy for the game. It's a brilliant business plan and no doubt I will be buying some in the future, but it sucks because there are so many and they're about $10 each.
Regardless I like what I've seen so far; I just need to wrap my mind around the more advanced concepts before moving on to the other missions.

The campaign is still somewhat similar to
Descent 2nd Edition, but the side missions are mixed in differently. There weren't really any side missions in the base Descent set (those came with the expansions) but the winner of the previous scenario would get to pick from a two different scenarios next, in the progression.
DOOM Boardgame may have been the first iteration, but it was quite different from these. I know Descent 1st Edition is pretty different from 2nd Edition, a huge rules rewrite. Imperial Assault is a small modification of 2nd Edition.
The first scenario is probably easy for the Heroes because they instantly lose if all their characters are incapacitated at the same time.. (or twice during the mission, each). I think the first scenario was meant to cruise through for rules learning purposes for noobs. The first (tutorial) scenario in Descent 2nd gave the exact same rewards to both sides, no matter who won or lost, so that's a good indicator and probably the same. I recall you could even skip that first scenario in D2 if you wanted, due to the "gimme". It really is a tutorial "can't lose" situation so you may not want to bother with it in the future.
The Imperial/Keeper player has to get used to his cannon fodder dying. You just have to keep the pressure on with the respawns and do your best to focus a hero down one at a time (and prevent them from accomplishing their objectives). The various special abilities, bunching vs not bunching & such are a big part of the fun. Especially since both sides will get more special abilities as the campaign progresses and they spend XP. Just note that some of the Imperial/Keeper Classes may be stronger than others.

Yeah the $10 mini expansions are rather exorbitant. I may initially limit picking up the Imperial boss packs at first (IG-88, the Elite Imperial Guard), if I do so. At least those potentially add more Imperial troop options to open slots in scenarios instead of needing to be specifically listed in them like Han & Chewie (I think).
The strategies will come, you only have to keep all the various pieces' abilities in mind. They'll vary over every campaign due to character selection & advancement options, but that's a big part of the fun.
I read someone's review on Amazon about one of the expansion packs (I think it was General Veers' AT-ST). They said that the figures were pretty much for the Skirmish game and not the Campaign game. I'd much rather play the Campaign game than the Skirmish one, at least right now.
The IG-88 figure is at the top of my list. Not sure about remaining ones, maybe the Rebel Trooper pack.
I think the SWIA game has round counters representing IG-88, Rebel Troopers, and some other figures, so that was mainly what I was complaining about, that you have to buy that extra content if you want the figures. I'd rather have a 100% complete game and then have the option of getting the extras if I want, and not having to feel like I have to buy the extras to fill out the base game.
Probably no gaming this weekend, just a long drive back to DC.
Good luck with the move, Martok!
Yeah, Martok. Don't put your gaming rig in the back of your pickup...lol. ;)

All the chatter about Silent Hunter IV is making me consider reinstalling it. So this weekend: maybe some Silent Hunter IV, maybe some flight sims and probably some board games and definitely some Invisible.
I've been meaning to go back to SH 4 too for quite awhile but always get side tracked. Started the Russian campaign in CMRT and continuing the German campaign in CMFI and considering strategies for a ERE- Attila campaign sometime ahead. But I can hear the sounds of Japanese merchants breaking-up in my sleep and so.... resistance is futile.
I imagine the mix will contain some World of Tanks, the Armored Warfare early access, possibly some Battlefield 4, and Galactic Civilizations III. And lots of reading (Honor Harrington, and some tech books for work and fun).
GalCiv III, Order of Battle Pacific and Pillars of Eternity are on my dance list for the weekend, with maybe some 7 Days to Die as filler.
BC let me know when you want to get started with some Order of Battle PBEM...sounds good.

I tried to start one, but damned if I can figure it out. Maybe it's not working? I tried registering an account and it said "PLEASE WAIT" for 15 minutes before I force-quit the program.
Not to mention it was a huge pain in the ass to just get to THAT point. Maybe you'll have better luck.
Couple more to add to the list...been experimenting with Strife again today, and I might play a bit of Conquest of Elysium 3 to get myself in the mood for the upcoming sequel. O0
Pillars of eternity
Crusader kings II

Same.
Also probably some tabletop Spy gaming too. :))
I haven't had a chance to get to my gaming rig tonight BC. Maybe MP isn't ready yet?
I still have at least one entry, maybe two, to write up on my TC2 1st Battle of Bull Run AAR; though considering (a) I already theoretically 'won' the battle with two regiments and blinding military genius, and (b) what should have been something that ended the war in two hours if my AI superiors had thought to exploit it, ends up with me morosely marching away to try to pull a points-win out of the fire that Beauregard is making with his own men... {inhale}
...I spent the week, when I had gaming time, trying to finish up Far Cry 3 for the coming of Arkham Knight later in June (and only finishing the first half :o ).
And then last night, I spent several hours gaming about thirty years of Victoria 2 as Xinjiang, aka the least ranked nation at the start of the main campaign in 1836. There were "primitive" nation/factions higher ranked, simply by virtue of having some brigades!
Well, being safely nestled in the armpit of the Chinese Empire, north of the Himalayas, I didn't have to build any brigades at all, so I could focus on shifting my soldier and officer populations into clergy and administrators. It only took me 30 years (I'm at around 1866 now, America already had its Civil War, started early and won early by the Union, with New Orleans breaking off temporarily into its own small nation), and... I am now at about 55% westernization. :P
Still, a good way to learn the system without being bothered much. Send my few diplomat points to making nice with my neighbors, their armies don't bother me, and there isn't much I can do nationwise until I westernize so I'm not swamped with play options. At one point I had taxes for all three population strata cranked to over 90%, and they were all still mostly getting 100% every day needs (not just life needs, or partial life needs). Though for some unclear reason I may have hit an economic death spiral -- I had been hit with a few years of tuberculosis and (two rounds of) cholera, so I had been encouraging migrations, and one of those two factors may have messed with me. All of a sudden no strata is getting more than partial life needs, regardless of how high I crank the taxes (so I can import things they want to buy) or how low I crank them (so they'll have more cash to buy things). The good news is that I also unlocked a higher financial system (for an uncivilized state) so now a bunch of foreign countries are borrowing money from me; maybe I can reduce taxes a lot more with that, even though in the short run it means I'm running a deficit. But I've saved up plenty of money in surplus, so I can do that for a little while.
Meanwhile it's hilarious wandering around the map and remembering how different the nation maps looked about 150 years ago. Hawaii? Still its own nation! (And significantly more higher ranked than me! -- I'm up to the high 70s, low-to-mid-80s, depending on how other nations are doing.) United States of Central America? The US still without Colorado or California or anything in between? The asston of tiny Germanic states? :smitten:
So far it's been
WiTP:AE. I'm slowly pushing my way through the Iron Mod. I like that it's a lot less predictable than the vanilla game.
Last night I watched
The Gamers: Dorkness Rising and it's sequel
Hands of Fate. If you've ever played pen and paper RPGs (lots) or CCGs (none) then you owe it to yourself to check these out. Production dollar per laugh is on the same scale as Clerks.

Dawn of War II Retribution
Space Marines
Company of Heroes II
Gus -

My first game was downright brutal. That's coming from someone who enjoys co-op games you lose more often than win.
Kept thinking maybe I screwed up and advanced the swarm too quickly or something. The players' overall buying power is fixed throughout the game, so it couldn't be the available resources. The Hive swarm difficulty grew faster than I could buy new improved cards to counter with. Thought I started off fairly well but things started steadily going down during the 2nd wave & I got murderized in the 3rd.
Good luck stormin' the castle. ^-^
Been busy fixing things around the house, but I did finally pull the trigger and picked up Tiller's Campaign Series (I'm glad the initial game load screen and music is there, but I miss the old Talonsoft opening films and such); started the Kokoda Trail campaign and promptly forgot to save after the first battle. :P
Looking at the Hunted Cow Russian Front sales blurb on the forum page, I'm getting the urge to take a big, heaping helping of Ostfront action, so God knows where that desire is going to take me ...

Had a perfectly good weekend of gaming kinda sorta ruined by a bug in Order of Battle - Pacific. Playing as the Japanese I had just completed the second mission of the campaign, taking most of the Philippenes, when the Burma campaign event appeared and froze the game. I can't advance. Same - which is why I haven't touched it since my first mission. But I wanted to give it a few more play throughs.
One thing that I do find rather annoying is balance. I have a mission with 37 resources. Choosing soldiers and equipment with that amount of resource is horrendously difficult. In the end I had two low level soldiers (7 and 6) and an NPC. I also had no spare points for skill cards.
It all seemed extremely tight...but we'll see.

Finished opening up the southern map on Far Cry 3 (the designers thankfully wrote in a disguise-mission which once completed allows me to wander the map with impunity unless I get too far into a base area, so I could go take all the radio towers at once); and have advanced the main plot somewhat farther while cleaning out more than half the enemy bases. There seems a good chance I'm at the 3/4 mark of the main story already, maybe farther -- about to go meet Hoyt at his compound and get my usurped character promoted (maybe, kind of doubt it'll be that easy).
Played several Civ IV BtS duels. The one further upthread, I won. A cultural victory. ONE TURN BEFORE TIME RAN OUT!!! It would have been sooner, but Napoleon declared on me with 35 Turns left and it took me some time to extricate myself. Two more came and went quickly, as it was island hopping maps and I just am not ready for that. This last game took though.
It's me and Ragnar on Pangaea. He started a war with me with even troops and more cities than me. I blunted his drive and counterattacked, taking all his cities but one. That's when my entire civilization went on strike! I was in Civ HELL until I was able to get Code of Laws and build Courthouses in all my cities. Finally, I was able to get everything going forward. By that time, Ragnar had filled the rest of the open land and, while not as powerful or researched as I am, it's going to take a few more Turns until I can wrap this up. It is a foregone conclusion though.
It was Combat Mission: Black Sea versus Cyrano and a new freind/opponent I met at the Bawbaversary named Gary. On top of that was Commander: The Great War and a Campaign Series: Rising Sun PBEM game also against Cyrano. In between turns I played a bit of Rising Sun solo, a scenario depicting the initial advance of the Japanese into French Indochina.
Yesterday I broke out Band of Brothers: Ghost Panzer and got it on the table. Now that I've refreshed my memory I'm finding I want to play that more than I do most of my PC games.
Tonight is mostly getting organized for a departure for Origins tomorrow afternoon.
I ended up playing...nothing >:(
As usual...to much things to do at home (wife, 3 kids etc...).
Finished Far Cry 3 last night; may pick up the (reportedly) superior FC4 (plus a few DLC) while it's on sale somewhere. Notably the Gamergate sale doesn't go through Steam but directly through UPlay. Can't decide if that's a feature or not...
(But more likely I'll play Blood Dragon since I already have it, and it isn't very long.)

Far Cry 4 is better. Not a lot in it - but I really like it. Pretty much the same thing with a different location and different story. There's other subtle differences and additions. Don't be fooled by that - it's totally different enough to give a different gaming experience.
My Dominion campaign in
Birth of the Federation (Ultimate Mod 5) is going swimmingly...perhaps a bit too much so! I did set the other four major powers at the next higher civ level than me (so they started out with more money, tech, and population), so time will tell. Still, the Founders are pleased with how things are progressing.
I've colonized around two dozen systems so far, including 4-5 very good-sized ones (larger than my homeworld). Along with my home system, my oldest colonies are now fully developed and devoted to virtually nothing but building ships -- just colony ships, troop transports, and destroyers (those beetle-like Jem'Hadar attack ships you saw on DS9 a lot in the later seasons) so far, but that's going to change very soon... O:-)
I've been busy with the various minor races in my sphere of influence as well. The Vorta diplomats have done their usual thorough work, and I now have alliances (affiliation treaties) with the Trill, Betazoids, and T'lani, plus a trade (friendship) treaty with the Breen; I can look forward to all of them eventually joining the Dominion. The treaties with the Betazoids and T'lani were especially important/beneficial, as it allowed us the use of their shipyards for refueling (and vice-versa), which was critical to our expansion plans where colonization was concerned.
Um, I may have also conquered two other minor races, the Parada and the Benzites. The former, mostly because they were in my immediate backyard, and because I could (I sort of used them as a "test bed" for my new fleet). >:D The latter, because they have a large system, and their special structure is a boost to industry -- combined with the Dominion Work Camp (which also boosts industry), it will be...interesting to see how quickly they can produce ships. :D I may also have, ah, "vigorously persuaded" the Halkans to join the Dominion; don't ask me how. :knuppel2:
My biggest achievement so far, however, was finally persuading the Tellarites to sign a membership treaty. Adding their resources to the Dominion will turn me into a true powerhouse almost instantly. In terms of population and infrastructure, the Tellarites' star system is simply enormous -- twice that of the Founder's home system!! (it's the biggest I've ever seen in this game) :o -- which that alone would've made them worth acquiring. Even more than that, however, the Tellarites also have two race-specific structures -- one that boosts their industry, and another that specifically boosts shipbuilding -- meaning that I can crank out the biggest, most powerful ships in just 2 turns. (In contrast, my next largest system would need 6 to build the same ship.)
In general, things are going extremely well for me -- to the point that it's admittedly starting to feel like a Monty Haul campaign. I'm halfway tempted to quit and restart with more difficult settings, except for one thing: When I look at the power graph, the Federation's line is still above mine (although I'm rapidly closing in on them). I really want to meet them first to see just how we stack up against each other...and then ream them back to the Dark Ages. Gotta keep them Solids under control!

Sounds fun! O0 Is that a random event (your civilization going on strike), or does it get triggered by certain things?

As I expected I played Elite most of the weekend, with some Distant Worlds and Command in there. Bought and outfitted a Cobra Mk. 3 late Sunday night, only to have it get destroyed in my first outing with it last night....25,000 credit re-buy cost. Was in a low intensity combat zone, and was doing well until it seemed like every hostile ship there decided to turn its guns on me.

Not even UM5 :tickedoff:
However...i will be on a business trip again starting next sunday for 12 days and i am resolved to play it EVERY evening! It's installed on my netbook. Reading your galactical adventures really makes me want to play it.
Well I'm glad I could inspire you. ;D
(On an unrelated note: Why is it that I never notice errors/typos in my posts unless/until someone else has quoted them...? :-[ )
Sounds like you have yourself in good position to come out on top, Martok. That's a satisfying feeling.
In answer to your question, my Civ going on strike is due to a negative income per Turn. In pursuing my war, I turned the economy to building solely military units. Each new unit had an upkeep cost. I rapidly added cities, which experienced several Turns of Anarchy before officially joining my empire, further bringing my monthly expenditures into the red. At one point, I was -71 gold per Turn. If I could have captured his one, last, city, I would have eliminated him and won the game. I was two Turns away from doing just that, when my last Gold reserves dried up and the strike began. I didn't know what to do, so, I just pressed End Turn a bunch.
When that didn't work, I went in to each city and sacrificed Population to complete buildings. Then I used the excess Food, that would have rapidly expanded my cities again, and moved it into Science spending. The reduced population and increased science allowed me to FINALLY research Code of Laws. That allowed me to build Courthouses in each of my cities. Courthouses reduce corruption in the city which returns a portion of gold to me each Turn. Once I was able to start turning a profit again, it was only a matter of time until I won.
Gotcha. (Note to self: Do not let cash reserves disappear when playing Civ IV. :P ) Yikes, what a pain!
So did Ragnar ever had an actual shot at you? I know you said he had more cities when he began the war, but I well know (as does any veteran grand-strategy gamer) that the side with more territory/resources by no means necessarily has the advantage in those situations.
We were even up in Tech and Units. And he declared just a few Turns before I was going to declare. So, I was ready for him on the board as well as in the production queue. Once he attacked, it was a matter of defending the attack stack he sent and then counterattacking at a place of my choosing. It didn't hurt that I had War Elephants and he didn't. ;)
Ha! Nice.
Damn. You're almost making me want to go fire up Civ IV again (assuming I can find my copy) and play as Persia now... (Must be strong! Must finish Dominion campaign first!) :P
Come on over to the Civ side. You know you want to...;)

i re-installed it today
is time altered somewhat in the games you play? you winning when there are still elephants and law courts to be constructed - i assumed it would go on much longer than that
We need to get another MP going! :2funny:
That's something that never sat well with me when it came to Civ IV - that you could technically build your Civ up to godlike levels and drop atom bombs on neighbors that weren't yet out of the Renaissance Era. In Civ V, even on the easier levels, I've not been able to do that. My "holy shite" moment with Civ V was early on when I started a war with neighboring India and thought I'd be all cool and drop said bombs on his cities. Lo and behold, Gandhi returns the favor and starts nuking my cities. I knew I loved the game wholeheartedly at that point.
We need to get MD pumped on Civ V and start an MP game in that. MD tries his Warlock style domination and the lil guys nuke away! >:D
Not gonna happen on V. I know it's childish, but, the one unit per hex thing is a dealbreaker for me.
How many units per hex in Warlock? ::)
I do agree, though, that was the first thing I hated about the new version.. That and the fact that you didn't have to build transports for your land units.
Warlock is different. I don't expect to be able to stack. I also don't like the look of the whole game from the preview I got watching you guys.
For someone who perpetually plays Civ, I'm surprised you haven't at least tried Civ 5 yet MD.
Me, too. I just can't wrap my head around the one hex/one unit concept. Plus, from the graphics I've seen, and the layout of the game and the map, it just seems...rounded. Or soft. I don't know. It's just not appealing to me at all. And that makes me sad.
You guys are on crack.
At first, I didn't know if I'd like the one-unit-per-hex thing, but now I love it and could not go back to IV and it's 'stack-o-death' spaces.
Maybe if you TRIED it, MD, you'd like it. Then try a MP game with me and a few others on Civ V. Unless you're...(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.flyingskunk.com%2Fdancingchicken2.gif&hash=f584e01087bf4e595d766e2b37678f28928ea9a6) :)
That would be too much like being fair about it. And how do I explain it to Civ IV if I like V better?
Oh, please. Civ IV is a whore. She'll take up with whomever wants to play with her.
Before Civ V the last Civ I really liked was Civ II. But I really enjoyed Civ V, especially some of the scenarios like the Scramble for Africa. Very fun. Try it MD...do it!
I still like Civ IV as well.. Love them both.. I can go back to either game at any time.
Civ V! Civ V! Civ V!
Come on MD all the cool kids are playing it. :coolsmiley:
An MP game of Civ V would be great... I'd even get in on that. :D

I'm single(-ish), so, nights aren't usually good.
Even I would try my hardest to get in on Civ V MP.
Will you talk? With your Barry White pipes?
That's asking a lot.
I know. But, with the major players that have already volunteered for a Civ MP showdown, I'm just looking for Brant to pop his head in here and say, "I'm down." And then what are you going to do? You can't have a six man Civ V game with everyone on Steam chat and not have you talking.
Why not?
Bad karma
does Gus not talk whilst he games?
No. Something about the proximity of family to his gaming rig. Doesn't want to wake anyone. I call bullshi* though. He was on a GrogCast, so, there has to be SOMEwhere he can game and talk!
I'm not even kidding - most of the time in real life I have to repeat myself 2 or 3 times because my voice is so deep and silky smooth. It's only more so on a phone or a microphone. I'm naturally the strong silent type ;D
Maybe that wasn't him on the Grogcast.. maybe he hired Barry White to replace him!
Isn't Barry White dead? Even better. But that was indeed me.
No excuses! If, and I caution you that it is a strong if, if I get talked in to this Civ V mp deal, then, not only will you participate, BUT, you will be required to participate! That is just the first of my demands!!
i will be the first to admit that the only reason i havent entertained joining one of these is the open mic sessions

Back to reality then. I really like Order of Battle: Pacific but I am down about how one defeat and your campaign is over. It doesn't help that just happened to me as well :)
I also tried Battlefleet 2 and Victory at Sea this week and both were so frenetic, they just made me feel old and confused. I also think I am WWII'd out...been playing a lot of WWII-themed games in the last few months.
I need to cleanse my gaming palette and I feel that AoWIII and Grim Dawn will help me do this.
It's funny you mention WW2 burnout, I had that about 6 months ago and now realise apart from SHIV I'm all purged of said genre
Isn't it like, "Oh S*it," o'clock over there?
According to my new math it's about 4am there. Yeah UCG wtf??

For people born before 70's, World War 2 is our 'Star Wars'. When you're a lil kid movies like Battle of the Bulge and Where Eagles Dare seemed really cool! Then along came Kelly's Heroes, and stepped it up a notch!
Yeah, those epic war movies...the ones you mentioned, Tuna, and I'd add Midway, The Longest Day, and A Bridge Too Far to that list...that's not something Hollywood can do anymore. They tried with Pearl Harbor and failed utterly and miserably.
Funny, you grow up and find out how really Bad Battle of the Bulge is. But when you were a lil kid, it was like the Rocky of War Movies.
FYI I haven't been playing any WW 2 recently either.

I cry just for the sake of the tears. But as for WWII. I started with the Bismarck game in about 1965. WWII had been over for about 20 years and in New Mexico in those days, it seemed like half the characters one heard about (eg. the principle of the school, or even the fathers of your friends) had survived the Bataan Death March since the New Mexico National Guard had a AA regiment in the Philipines in late 1941.
So if anything in those days and in Albuquerque WWII seemed if anything too mundane to be very interesting. Bismarck was more my gaming style since it featured ships. Other than that I played pirate games and Gettysburg. Few could face me in Bismarck.
WWII did not become particular interesting for me until the recent spate of intensely factual books on it began to come out about 20 years ago -- for example, Clay Blair on Uboats and so on.

There is most definitely a 'must have' dvd-shelf list of classic war movies. Here's a few of my candidates (in no particular order):
A Bridge Too Far
Tora, Tora, Tora
Kelly's Heroes
Murphy's War (still looking for that one on DVD)
the Desert Fox
the Desert Rats
the Blue Max
the War Lover
Battle of Britain
Cross of Iron
Gallipoli
Please feel free to add on...

Thanks Tuna. I'm going to give it a go and see if I like it. I'm a sucker for expansion packs so I'm sure I'll own them before the weekend is over.
Brave New World is the best expansion for Civ V. Gods and Kings was kind of 'meh' as an addition to the vanilla Civ V.
