Crap.
Crap crap crap.
Now I really hate the fact that I'm broke this month...
Oh nice!
For me it's crap times 2....i am broke and don't have time to play games!
Guys, its $5.99...how broke can you be?
I'm broke, but I'm not that broke.

Logic dictates they are holding back the sequel to generate money on the first, Captain.
You guys realize that they are releasing the first one now..
Which means the much better SFC2, containing the same and much more, will be out before long.
But if you don't want to wait... you can purchase
SFC2: Orion Pirates from Dynaverse.net for around $6. It has all the extra races, ships, Dynaverse campaign, etc plus slightly improved ship textures & such.

I picked up SFC2:OP there within the last 2 months. Got a key and the digital download. Runs rock solid on my Win7-64.

Yup.
I think GOG is great, but I've seen them do this a few times in the past (holding back a much improved sequel release for awhile to sell the original first). S'okay, I have patience!
While I'm going to wait for the sequel (and its expansion -- which my mind swears to me I already have around here somewhere but I can't find it), I do hope the release of the first game in its Gold upgrade state will introduce new fans so that the sequel will sell better. :)
Which is less cynically capitalistic than the other theory, though I don't blame GoG if the other theory is (also?) true. They have to make a living somehow, so they can stay in business and provide us with access to grand old games.
...this thread is making me want to dig out my copy of SFC 2.

I've not tried to use my old disk for SFC2:EAW but I hear that it's disk check DRM (and possibly other stuff) screws up on Win7/8 64-bit systems for many people.
That digital download of SFC2:OP works fine for me, however. Only a serial number entry DRM. OP was just EAW re-released with some software updates and extra features. Those must've helped it's compatibility on our modern OSes.
Wish I could find my SFC2:EAW manual. That thing was excellent. Back when they gave you thick manuals. :) The PDF is easy to find but I'm a Book Sniffer.
I'm going to hold on for SFC2. I never actually played that one.
Got great memories of SFC1 though. Lost my virginity the night I purchased the game to a hot Italian girl visiting me from Long Island. Didn't get to install or play it for a few days since she had most of my attention.

Long Island? What's her name? I'm in Suffolk County.
Just purchased but I can't seem to run it. After a minute or two, I get a "program stopped working" message. Running in various compatibility modes doesn't seem to help. I'm on a losing streak with respect to running old games. Anyone?

*shrug*
I've not played SFC1 since SFC2 came out back around 2000. :-\
SC: Orion Pirates plus the mod that makes your ships look like they should (i.e. Feds get round engine nacelles, etc.) is the only way to fly.
Starfleet Command was the first game to prompt me to purchase computer upgrades so I could have a better time with it; love Star Trek, I do.
Glad to see it available again.

Did you run the config.exe program in the main folder and set your screen resolution?
If that fails, try deleting the sfc.ini file and restart.
Hopefully he won't mind my doing so in public here, but a big "thank you!" to Staggerwing for his gifting to me a copy of this game. I already knew you were a good guy; this merely reinforces that. :)

:'( That's beautiful, man......
I have this game in my cart in GOG Galaxy.
I also added AI War Complete and Heroes of Might and Magic III Complete.
I just need an excuse to pull the trigger, man.

You don't need an excuse, just permission. I'm happy to give it to you. ;)

About time. I've been waitin' over here.
Well, shit. Bought all three but Star Trek won't install. It keeps telling me "game not supported." What the hell is that crap?
EDIT: nvm, looks like it's not supported by Galaxy. Well, that's still pretty stupid that I can buy it through Galaxy but I can't download/play it through there.

:) Well, my CDs loaded up just fine. Entered the serial number code, ran the setup and its running great. Poked around the internetz and updated it to SFC2:EAW 2036...never picked up the Orion Pirates addition it seems :(. Just playing with the tutorials so far, but its running on my Win 7 Pro 64-bit O0
...any mods I should try to pick up??
p.s. ...and yeah, I've still got my original SFC:EAW manual. Things gotta weigh in at 4-5 pounds easy >:D
Actually just weighed it and it comes in at ~13.75 ounces. Its actually a book, a real book (~5.5-inches x 8-inches)...ah, for the good old days of REAL manuals/user guides, with a type size that you can actually read!
Can someone please explain the differences between all the SFC2 games? There seem to be a few of them. Empires at war, Orion pirates, community development? What is the one to get? I know I've had them all in the past, but I just don't remember.

I just picked up HoMM3 Complete on the off chance I may actually play it eventually. It's reportedly still superior to the HD remake because the latter is missing some of the content, notably including the random map generator & such.
I just tried it for a few minutes, Nef. So far so good, but it crashed to the desktop when I tried to view another village in my main/first one, in a campaign game.

Empires At War was the first SFC2. A great game but the developers released a standalone expansion named
Orion Pirates a short time later that had pretty much everything in EAW but with upgraded software (maybe even a newer DirectX support at the time), new ship types (like the Mauler with the big spinal mount weapon), and some other small additions.
So
Orion Pirates is just an upgraded EAW. I think it's missing the ISC vs Everyone storyline campaigns, having a different set, but the storyline campaigns weren't terribly good anyway. Campaign's best used as a sandbox for creating battles and expanding your fleet IMO.
The
Community Edition is a mod of EAW (the first SFC2). Therefore, it doesn't have some of the upgrades in OP. But it has some additional user-created content such as mission types, maybe some new ship class variants, etc. The main bonus is that it's supposed to make EAW work better with modern OSes. In theory.
However, CE regularly crashes in the middle of a battle on my Win7-64 machine. Some were due to a buggy modded mission type in it, but even after dropping the workaround in it, the thing still occasionally crashes. So I've moved over to playing Orion Pirates instead. It seems to run far more smoothly .. and no crashes. Also, the CE edition hasn't had any update to fix such bugs in the past year or so. I can't recommend the CE edition in it's current condition.
The AI in Orion Pirates has also been more challenging compared to the same difficulty level setting. Not sure if that's due to new AI scripting in OP or something else.
Awesome summary, nef. Thanks.

There is a couple GOG forum threads about HOMM3 crashing when you have Nvidia Shadowplay turned on.
There are also suggestions of using the HD Mod (https://sites.google.com/site/heroes3hd/) on Win8 with it. Also making sure you install it outside your Program Files folder and all the other usual Windows protection workarounds (Run As Admin, etc).
Sorry for the OT in the SFC thread. We should probably put up a new discussion of the advantages & pitfalls between GOG's HoMM3 Gold and Steam's HD remake.
Oh, one more thing:
Be aware that if you purchase SFC2: Orion Pirates from Dynaverse.net, you'll probably have to download the freeware version of MagicISO and extract the files to a folder via that.
It doesn't cost anything to do that. Just an annoyance. I don't know why they didn't just zip/7z the damn thing for the digital distribution. I guess that was the image they used to print off physical copies.
Another piece of info about CE/EAW & OP I picked up. Evidently they only received permission to modify EAW into CE & sell it. But they only received permission to sell theunmodified version of OP. There are still some OP mods available at that site, although I've not tried them yet.
Is there any sort of DRM with the Dynaverse SF2: OP install? Very tempting.
So you download an ISO file?

I'm tempted to pull the trigger on OP from Dynaverse, too. Pulling the files off an ISO is no big deal. More interested in any potential DRM.

Just a serial key activation the first time you start the game. Like the Matrix serials.

Like I mentioned before, they send you an ISO. Which is no big deal.
My issue (and another person who picked up CE there had it too) was that I had to specifically use MagicISO to extract the files from the image. The ISO program I already had on my computer didn't do the trick, and supposedly some others won't either.
So just be aware you may have to extract the files with that specific program. I just burned the files off on a backup disk after that.
Thanks, I've played around with ISOs before. They can be weird like that. I've used Magic Iso before. I'll do exactly what you did, grab the files and burn them to disc.
In conclusion: I'm waiting for SC2OP. I'm not fooling around with all the iso gibberish.
Also, I think it says something about the appeal of the game system generally that this thread has not (yet) gone on a hunt and post for hot Romulan girls. ;)

Tangentially related to that: Did you check out the final
Bloodwing/Rihannsu novel yet? (Or
Dark Mirror?)
Not yet. Fell off my radar. It was a little tricky figuring out which ones I have read already. Seems like they did some anthology after Romulan Way. I didn't really feel like paying 30 bucks for the full set when I own the earliest books already.

There is this freebie from Microsoft. I have not tried it with dynaverse ISOs. I use VirtualCloneDrive myself. Worked like a champ.
