Anyway, not alot of gaming this weekend as it's my 22nd wedding anniversary today (actually met her 27 years ago!) so I'm out for a meal tonight (with her!).
Tomorrow might be gaming and Sunday is out as Scotland in Colchester is going on...time to stick on the kilt and "git intae ra inglish bastards!" - or actually just go down, watch some Mass Bands playing and get drunk with alot of pals.

This weekend, I'll chug a little farther into Ace Combat: Assault Horizon (the full set of which I picked up back at Christmas on deep discount), although I can't tell after three(ish) missions whether I'm really feeling it yet. I'm a big fan of AC4, AC5, and AC0 (a prequel to 5); and always wanted to play the XBox ACom, the name of which I forget at the moment but the soundtrack of which I bought and mixed with AC5/0.
This is not that game. It's... well... to be blunt, a big draw for me has always been the alternate universe milieu of the AceCom series -- even on the Playstation Portable, I finished the game set in one of their fictional universes but never bothered finishing the one set in an alternate 'real life'. For much the same reason I've never been able to get into the Tom Clancy H.A.W.X. game (aside from the silly name) which in mechanics is nothing but Ace Combat, yet is set in a supposedly real-life milieu. (The uninspired music for HAWX and Assault Horizon isn't helping either.)
More likely I'll start Far Cry 4, which with its single-player DLC is my big purchase on the Steam sale this summer. (With Arkham Knight on the way at the end of the month, pre bought not on sale.) I came within a hair of buying all the single-player portions of Assassin's Creed 3 and 4, before I realized I've never even installed AssCreed2 and its assorted family of set-sequels; I should wait for another sale later on that (whereupon the price presumably might have dropped a bit more.)
Out of amusement, I here routinely note that The Saboteur was never on sale at Gamersgate again, and it looks like Lost Planet 2 won't be on sale at Steam again either. (I've played and thoroughly enjoyed the former on PS3, though I've heard it's a bit buggy on PC. The latter I'm only interested in as completing a set for games I've never bothered playing yet, and also because I'm morbidly amused about how the other two games of its series are regularly on sale but it never seems to be.)
Tonight I'm dong some video editing from my twitch stream last weekend, and setting up for my Command stream tomorrow. After tomorrows stream I hope to be split my time between Elite, EUIV with the new DLC, Distant Worlds and whatever, if anything, I get from the Steam sale...but more then likely I'll just end up playing Elite.

As far as gaming goes, i have a new steam summer sale resolution.....no,no,no i'm not going to boycott the sale, heavens no, nothing that extreme. I vow to finish some damn games, starting with HELL which i picked up in the humble bundle and am currently knee deep in the campaign of the goodguys. The AI is devious as hell. It tends to feel more like a puzzle game to me, though. Not bad for an evening where you don't feel like pushing around a ton of units. Games can be very short - Kursk is something like four turns, for example.

Well, "ton" is relative. Some Panzer-generalish games, you get fourteen or so units per mission; this one you're probably going to get a few dozen, easily 30+, maybe 50+. But it isn't like a monster wargame, and because of the way the missions are designed (as very large-scale frontal battles of the sort that were really only ever found on the East Front anyway) it's pretty easy to find all your units and work through them.
As with many (all?) games roughly based on Panzer General, the missions do feel puzzle-like; and that's especially true in this game because the turn constraints are ridiculous. But the game is generally fair; as crazy as the turn goals may seem at first, they are doable, and that leads to a lot of satisfaction in making the cut.
I say "generally fair" because the if you leave weather on -- and I'm not sure you can turn it off -- the weather effects can combine with the extreme limited number of turns to kill your chances of winning the mission from the outset or on any given turn. I haven't had that happen often, but I've seen it happen occasionally. Come to think of it, maybe the weather can't ruin a mission from the beginning -- but it does affect offense negatively and you're usually going to be on offense (or counter-offense as the campaign story may go; again much like any Panzer General game). And it obviously affects movement (maybe also supply, I can't recall) and in a game where movement (and supply) are absolutely critical, that can be deadly.
Unlike most Panzer General games, you won't get a lot of spending money between missions either, and much of that tends to go to repairing and buffing corps (or divisions if you're playing as Russia), rather than buying new and/or elite units. Consequently, it's easy to make a hard but ultimately wrong choice early in a campaign which would have been the right choice had things gone differently, and end up hurting for points to spend refreshing your troops later.
On the other hand, there isn't much really to 'buy' in this game (unlike most PG-based games -- this one's about the simplest such adaptation of the rules that I've seen, though it has some subtle details to it). That could be good or bad depending on how much you like or want that sort of thing.
Personally, I think the series is worth it at full price, and at a deep discount sale like this the value jumps even higher. But it is what it is, and it isn't what it isn't, so... I dunno, check some YouTube reviews/LPs maybe?
Specifically to the question of how deep it is? On average, less deep than Panzer General, I'd say. But deeper than PG in some regards.

Just double-checked on my copy, and there seems to be no way to change the icons in-game. However, there are many NATO counter mods around, such as at the mod subcategory at Unityofcommand.net (http://unityofcommand.net/forums/viewforum.php?f=37)

I could have sworn there was an option to switch the icons in UoC...but I haven't played in many months. The AI is wicked though and I enjoyed UoC a lot.

Things sort of went as planned. Vassal PBEM is a fun way to play games and I did spend most of my time in DCS -- but mostly working on the MIG15bisbeta. The early jets are a lot more manageable in terms of systems to learn than jets like the MIG21. Also the MIG15 is pretty much a close-range dogfighter with a lot of power so its more like flying a very good WWII fighter than something really advanced.

I ended up spending time seeing how well Steam and some games run on Linux. I tried Age of Wonders III, XCOM, Football Manager 15, and Kerbal Space Program. I also played KSP, XCOM, How to Survive, and MOO2 on Windows. I also found some restraint and made use of the new Steam refund policy to return some games I almost certainly won't spend much time playing before the next sale, so I think my expenditures for the sale are back down under $10.
In accord with the prophecy (and also resurgence of a stomach virus or whatever), I spent most of Saturday and Sunday working through most of the southern third of the Far Cry 4 campaign. While the main character is about as softly developed as a bag full of marshmallows, I'd rather have that than Douche McDudebro growing up to be a psycho killer. :P Everyone else is written as well or better than in FC3. Granted, no one can be as freaky-evil as Vash or whatever his name was, but Pagan Min does a much better job of being cultured-crazy-evil than Hoyt. Amita or whatever her name is, is 1000% better than all the main female FC3 characters put together.
The visuals as everyone already knows are amazing, though I'm already very much over having three high-Himalayan missions in a row -- I'd rather have those spaced out (though I supposed I could just ignore most of them as optional...?)
My love for the Buzzer (essentially an old "Mosquito Air", i.e. a bike helicopter) is pure and undefiled, and only sharpened by the realization that such things exist in real life and for a cost of around $18,000 $35,000 I could in 100% real life kill myself thoroughly on such a thing by being shotgunned at the first opportunity by Tennessean neighbors who prefer their airspace peaceful and quiet (not to say private). I am nevertheless tempted to buy one and put it together anyway. Maybe farmers would let me mount a GoPro on it and fly around their fields to check on their crops.
Considering how much thought the devs put into little details (like the weedeater sound of the blades of the Buzzer bumping into treetops! :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: ) I'm a little surprised they didn't think to write in dialogue variations based on unlocking the wingsuit (which arrives early in the game), since that would seem to be something that would impress the local people a lot: Ajay son of Rohan (or whatever) doesn't even need a small helicopter or hang glider to fly! But I'm a little less than 1/3 of the way through the game (maybe only 1/4, depending on how the map shakes out), so perhaps that's coming.

Gaming-wise, I mostly played older titles this past weekend, as I was initially having problems with the internet at my new place (and corresponding problems with my Steam games -- and I was having problems with offline mode for some reason).
Birth of the Federation dominated (no surprise there ::) ), having started a new campaign as the Feds. (I regretfully abandoned my Dominion campaign, as I was already too overpowered compared to the other four empires; getting the Tellarites and T'lani to join me put me way over the top.) This time around, I've bumped up the other four powers to two civ levels above me in an effort to make them more competetive; we'll see how that plays out.
Inspired by my reading of
The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay, I've also started a new campaign in
Medieval Total War/Viking Invasion, this time as Aragon. Let the Reconquista begin!
And because I firmly believe that D&D is good for the soul, some time was spent playing
Neverwinter Nights 2 as well. 8)

Jason, I think you need to start writing reviews/articles for the site. I've always had zero interest in the Far Cry series, yet you almost made me want to get FC4 based on this post alone (and it's not the first time you've done that). :P
As a side note don't spend 30 hours including 2 4am sessions setting up the first witp Japanese turn only to find out you'd set it up in the wrong section and now need to do it all again

There aren't many places in a video game I feel like I might actually want to live, in real life. But this little fictional country of Kyrat, maybe 2.5 miles across, is one. Flying around on a Buzzer is the safest mode of travel, and allows a full experience of scenery porn, but even just hiking randomly around is unendingly gorgeous; moreso in a way because you can't always see everything at once. With the occasional tiger or eagle or badger attack, you know.
I even learned something by accident that must be true in real life and which I probably should have known already but never really did: the colorful flags flown as apparently random decorations in Himalayan countries? -- they have prayers written on them. (I infer they're prayers as an educated guess.) The dev team includes them faintly on close examination at certain graphic levels.
