it looks like some Grogheads around here also enjoying Witcher 3 :)
and so let's start a game help thread (beside the AJ review thread for general impressions) to have a different one for asking specific questions to improve Geralts performance in given situations and to solve in-game non-technical problems and how to work around those.
1. I am exploring Velen but didn't found any smith yet. Is it possible without penalty to fast-travel back to the starting area and visiting known smithies and traders there? (to improve/repair the kit, and exchange the loot for coins) and then travel back to Velen. How much time does it takes, and are the quests timecritical? so does it matter if you in-game are 'a week away' before you contine the main quest, open side quests, and contracts?
2. I discovered when overloaded, i can make a nice pile of goods throwing them away from the inventory and those show up as a sack/bundle containing all items thrown away in one single 'inventory access session' on the floor in Gerats world, and it looks like they are persistent! But how long? (will invisible looters find them when you are away?)
Atm, it looks like its possible for Geralt to build a 'hidden' stack/ even a basecamp with equipment at a chosen place (maybe near a wolf spawnpoint to keep humans away) dump some loot there and later have at least the chance to come back to pick up the items later again
PS: for answers with spoilers in the thread
i propose to change the font color to "beige" this info would be a spoiler
...and the spoiler text passage get only good readable when marked
1. I don't think it affects you going back to a previously visited place. I did. As for quests - I don't know if they are timed or not. I haven't seen any timed ones as yet
For a smithy in Velen try Crow's Perch and Midcopse
2. I didn't even notice. I always just sell all my crap. I've got very little money so I'm constantly needing to sell my loot
Geralts helping Geralts: "How perverse!", C3P0. >:D
Ok - for dropping loot, I tried this. I dropped my gear and then fast travelled to another region. I then fast travelled back and my loot was still there.
I then saved the game and exited. When I went back in and loaded my save, my loot was still there.
I don't know if it can be picked up by anyone - but it is persistent through fast travel and exiting it seems - well - at least according to my wee test.
ok I have a question...
I am losing money hand over fist. I'm seldom above 100 crowns!! And that soon goes when I get to repair my armour and weapons.
When selling things, it seems items sell MUCH less than I would pay to buy. For example, I think I got 20 crowns for a saddle when it stated a crown price of something like 180. Swords as well. I pick up a shed load of swords and when I go to sell them, I'm generally getting between 5 and 8 crowns. Really poor prices.
Currently, after my last visit to sell stuff and fix my equipment, I have 25 crowns!!
So - what should I be getting for swords/armour etc? I know it will vary - but is 5-8 crowns a reasonable expectation or should I be looking at more?
Also the Magic items and master items? Should I keep them or sell them if they don't look like they are better than my current?
I read somewhere that someone had 30k in cash in game...WTF??
JD,
i have 1300 coins (level5@Velen, 31h playtime, exploring and doing all the sidequest)
i have read in a hint edition of a mag: you have to sell the stuff to the right trader-branch to get a better price so weapons to weapon-smith, armor to armor-smith and so on. Also the bigger the city and the more 'cultured' the area the better the price in general (i guess wartorn Velen is worst and Novograd capital area is best)
concerning the master and relict items: i am a 'hamster cheek', i want to keep the good stuff and because i cant judge if i might need them later ...that's why i asked if the external pile-method will work in the longrun ;-) (i thought to build 3 stashes in a keep, one of light, medium and heavy armor and fitting weapon/equipment)
Witcher3 seems to be about 'preparing' and specialize 'outfitting' for the next planed big fight/monster type ahead ...so visiting your keep, putting the right stuff on, packing and preparing the right oils, bombs, portions (maybe you have to hunt down missing things to construct and brew something new first before you even dare that task), then shifting the unlocked buffs in a fitting combination for that task into the few free slots of the character menu ...and then its off to saddle Roach and ride into the adventure ahead.
concerning the 30k
there was an exploit in older game versions, where you could kill harmless cattle, take the skin and sell them, cattle respan ...and so some sorry ass of a witcher started a Chinese gold farming grinder
(now after a killing to much cattle a powerful bovine monster spans instead of the cattle, so i was told ;-) )
well, on the other hand if you are low on coins, i think its a valid and honorable method to hunt bear, esp. polarbear for their skin ...or at least don't miss the opportunity when you run into one on our journey. (i don't know if they allways drop skin, or sometimes only meat)
Yeah I know about selling stuff to the right people - but the prices are pretty poor. If I take a sword to a trader, he may offer 6 crowns. If I take it to a smithy or armorer, I'll get maybe 8 or 10.
I don't know how you've got so much money. I've got less than 100 again after creeping up to £150 or so. 70 crowns to fix my kit and sell some stuff. That's it. I haven't been paying attention to whether or how much I get paid - but I am doing all the quests and the secondary ones too. I'm going around finding a lot of loot when I discover undiscovered places - but still it's peanuts.
Maybe I'm not selling enough. I am hanging on to a lot of things for crafting. Maybe I should just be selling most of it, but I'm carrying about a gold ring, steel plates, meteorite stones, silver bars - a whole host of things. In fact, once I sell the weapons, armour and some other things I find (which normally takes me up to 150 maybe 200 crowns), I'm still carrying around about 45-50 in weight out of the 60 allowed - that's how much shite I'm carrying around. But I daren't sell it because a lot of it is required for crafting!
Well - I've now got about 1500 crowns, but I've been selling stuff like Diamond Dust and relics that give quite a good price - but they are also things you wonder if you should be letting go of. I don't know how prolific they are in the game....though the fact I picked them up early perhaps signifies they are about as long as you do all the side quests and discover all the places and dens?
Anyway - 1500 crowns and 20 weight points free. O0
JD i think our account balance difference in early gameplay had depended on playstyle.
Now where i also had discovered 'the shopping opportunities' in Velen i am down below 1000 too ;)
(i use to keep all seldom crafting stuff ...don't know if i badly need them later and have to track items down again, but reduced stock of weapons and armors to the meaning minimum and sell all garbage ASAP.... fortunately i was able to upgrade saddle bags from 30 to 70:-) )
I use to explore "?" alot instead of following the mainquest, so i had lots of chest discoveries, fights ...and so loot to sell,
also have already collected construction shemes for even level 27 items and such, but not so much in the near to reach levels
even so its open world, i guess its meant to be played to follow more strictly the main and a little the side quest but 'free' explore only on the way, when forced by a quest to travel through a new stretch of land in Velen
btw, i found a pickaxe but didn't grabbed it cause of the weight, later in a cave i saw something that might be gold ore (or the remaining burn effect of a bomb?) in the wall, ...well i didn't had the tool to test if mining is in the game (similar to the mining in Skyrim with a pickaxe, ...but in Witcher3 more like an easter egg)
Oh I did all the side quests. Every ? mark in the first area had been cleared before I moved to Velen.
I am astounded by the amount of ? marks in Velen - and it's only my second area.
I came across a Griffin flying the other day and I stopped thinking I could take it on after defeating the one in the first area...but noooooooooooo...this thing was so tough it didn't have a level...once swipe and I was a goner. The same happened with some beasts in some little village I thought I would stop at!
Also - rather stupidly, if I done quests where money was to change hands (there were a few) I didn't take the coin. I have since changed my attitude.
I've just met a sorceress called Keira Metz who I definitely going to get my freak on with :-) - and that took me down a dungeon place following the Wild Hunt. That was a tough place to go. What I would say is make sure you keep stock of food.
It's a superb game...absolutely superb. Stunning looking too. There's nothing like riding along and suddenly hearing the wind pick up, seeing the trees start to blow and then the clouds coming over...Stunning.

That is one thing that's quite annoying. I'm running around trying to keep all this crap because you might need to dismantle it to make some piece of equipment and also I've got diagrams for level 20+ kit...and I'm only level seven! I think they may have put them in the wrong places or just plain too soon.
...or maybe it's just a reward for doing all the side stuff.

+1 indeed
yesterday i wanted to just explore one additional "?" (it was a monsternest) and see what happend to me in the next 2h realtime (i couldn't stop ;)) ... after the fight i got close to a bandit-hide-out, i had seen earlier but was to week in the past then ... now i gave them the good news:-) after the fight i was close to an unchecked village ...so i went in to check the blackboard (to see even more "?" ;) )
i talked to a poor granny, who then hired/convinced me to clear her former home (a manor) from ghosts ... i went strictly to that place (killed some wolfs and bear on the way) and 'evaded distraction impulse' to explore two new "?" on the way (i went straight through the middle of them on the map right through the wood and saw a wonderful canyon in the eveening light ...to explore on the way back)
now came where Wichter 3 really shines ... of course i got ambushed by the ghost i and killed them and investigated the houses and barns of the manor for loot, which is just following SOP in RPG ... and then its started to get
CSI Velen ;) ...and then piece by piece the backstory
why there where a ghost (connected with information pieces the granny had revealed to convince me first to actually take the contract) ... a whole oustanding
entertaing like a short-story written for that universe (dark and getting darker personal) story got told :-)
all the quests and sidequest seem to be of that quality O0
then i joined my first boxing-tournament ...and here (see spoiler text) it show all decision has a influence on how it plays out later (JD, i thing helping people and showing a heart pays off later ...a little at least, or i hope so)
Spoiler warning: "The guy asked me to let him win the fight and i had only bet a small sum, so i let him win, saw how week he was, and then fought a revenge. but this time i chose -of course- the maxium bet, won the fistfight with ease ...gained 150 coins cause i new then he was only level 4) "
...please kick me! ...Today i ordered a new graphic card :D i coudnt help it
(actually its the first half of a new rig, or a major upgrade of the old one which was actually more scheduled for this winter :-[ )
I can't believe I've got 42 hours in this already - and I have a shed load of ? (undiscovered areas) to do in Velen still!
As some of you may know, we are finishing up work on our next big patch, Patch 1.07. It's a very large update introducing some key changes, including:
A new, alternative (optional) movement response mode for Geralt.
A player stash for storing items, available in various locations throughout the game. Stash locations are marked on the player's map.
Crafting and alchemy components no longer add to the overall inventory weight.
Books are now placed in a dedicated tab in the Inventory and books that have already been read are properly grayed out.
Multiple sorting options are now available in the Inventory.
Alchemy formulas and crafting diagrams can be "pinned", meaning all components and ingredients required to make them will be conveniently marked in the Shop panel.
Dozens of fixes for quest related issues, both major and minor.
A few performance enhancements, including the optimization of FX, scenes and general gameplay.
Various improvements to horse behavior.
Should be released next week.

Strange...my patch was only roughly 2.1 GB......but nonetheless, seems fairly big update even at that size.

Did you use Galaxy ? Manual patch 2.1 GB - I update with Galaxy and get a 7.6 GB file. Weird.

Yes, I use manual patching...haven't fully decided to trust the Galaxy thing quite yet.
Ha I just accepted a quest by an old soothsayer. It sent me to a cave at the mouth of which there where heaps of bones, puddles of blood and gore and a little bitty white rabbit hopping around. I suspect it had sharp pointy TEETH an a mean streak a mile wide.
