Looks like the long awaited sequel to Steel Panthers is coming....

I'm more concerned about the discontinuation of Battle Academy. Hope the BA derivatives / mods from 3rd party devs will still be developed.
The way i read it is slitherine won't be using the engine to develop more games in house. My guess is they'll be letting other dev teams use the engine.
I really hope some further development is done with the Battle Academy engine and it doesn't languish and die. :'(
Funny, a couple of years ago an announcement of a new Steel Panthers would have been received with a lot of enthusiasm. The first three posts in this thread were concern for Battle Academy. High praise for BA.
I believe Hell was based on the BA2 engine and it was developed by Hunted Cow so it seems like they may allow development to continue as -budd- said.
I'm just disappointed that they are not calling it "steel lions". I would have even been excited with "steel leopards"...oh well, I'll have to wait until the third or fourth run in the series.

Yeah, I particularly like Pike and Shot (by Byzantine Games).
While I admit that a successor to Steel Panthers makes me drool, I just can't see an initial release being as deep as SPMBT or SPWWII have become through the efforts of a few dedicated people who have researched and created OOBs for nearly every relevant country in the world. The 2d graphics have never bothered me, though I am intrigued by what the games could look like in 3d. I hope any new game is as editable for OOBs and scenarios as the old ones.
So if the 15 year old 'free' version of Steel Panthers cost fifty bucks, what is this one gonna cost? :crazy2:
Just my opinion....but I wish they would put the phrase 'spiritual successor' to rest for good. I have seen it used so many times and yet when they come out they don't live up to the hype....Xcom and Master of Magic come to mind, but there have been others. They make the same mistake with movies all the time, like that recent head-scratcher remake of Mad Max. The pc gaming world has radically transformed since those old ancient games came out, it just aint' going to happen. They are gone and they are never coming back. Let new games be new games and be good games in their own right without be a 'successor' to anything.
The guys who do SPMBT and SPWWII have done an outstanding job keeping the game alive, making it better, adding features, and doing the research to update OOBs. I don't think there is any other game out there that has the depth and accuracy when it comes to ground military equipment and organization over the past 70 years. It's worth the $50 and more. And it you don't want to shell out the cash, you can always just play the free version at lower resolution. What I love about the game, as a soldier, is that it isn't gamey. The best way to win in nearly every scenario is to apply sound and doctrinal military planning and tactics. The AI is somewhat limited, but a good scenario designer can manipulate the editor in many ways to make things very difficult for the human player without simply adding more enemy forces, in effect making the AI behave like a very cunning human opponent.

Meh.
Battle Academy is a fun little game but it fails in comparison to Steel Panthers in terms of realism.
Hopefully Steel Tigers will live up to the legacy.

+1 QFT. It really is a great game and worth the money. There's A LOT of game there.
I was hoping a Battle Academy Cold War game would be released...

Indeed - head and shoulders above BA in terms of reality.
I have been waiting on news like this for years. Hopefully, they can make a game where the Soviet artillery phase doesn't last for 45 minutes :buck2:

OMG - What a hoot - I thought I was the only one who got bored during artillery barrages ;D
That's when you do some of the household chores you should have been doing instead of playing on the computer. Start turn, do laundry, play turn, start next turn, fill dishwasher, play turn, rinse, repeat.

Completely different games and different scales.
I wish BA would venture into a more modern setting.
I know BA is a completely different animal in terms of scope, gameplay, and depth. It would be cool to see Cold War and Modern conflicts in a similar engine/style. I think that will happen at some point with both the Archon and BA engines being moddable.

You're not the only one. The only thing that currently keeps me from playing Steel Panthers is the interminable wait times on the AI's turn. I pretty much just curl up with a good book on artillery phases.

There's an option to speed up arty right? You mean it takes so long even when the option is activated?
Need to see alot more info.

Actually, I do all the chores as I am a single parent, and my dishwasher gets used nearly every day. Some weekend days twice.

Okay, I am really sorry. It was just a (obviously crap) joke on the idea that if you have a dishwasher you shouldn't have to rinse. Also, FWIW, I do all that stuff at my house, so I'd never make light of it.
Father Ted- No offense taken! ;)
If I had thought my post through I would have dug up a smiley washing a plate to end it with: (https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.sherv.net%2Fcm%2Femoticons%2Fhousework%2Fwashing-dishes-smiley-emoticon.gif&hash=7a18799d513845680ec7b1c653aeda52934a20db)

If you mean pre-rinse the crud off of the dishes before going into the dishwasher, I do that already. I see where that would help the wear and tear on the washer but not the septic. The pre-rinse water is now added to the load from the washer making for more stress on the septic system, not less.
Oh the humanity! A thread about the successor to Steel Panthers derailed by talk about domestic chores! ;)
(BTW, I too wash dishes as a small way to show the wife I love her. Much respect to you and your parenting Stagger)
The large chunks will go down the drain of a dishwasher and risk causing problems in the tank...not breaking down. In a sink, you should have a special disposal that will grind it very fine. Some dishwashers have the ability to grind that stuff up, but not fine enough.
Don't question my dishwashing prowess. I was trained by a master dishwasher...my wife. You don't want to be on her bad side.
I wish my wife would buy me a dishwasher! :'(
I don't really understand the whole concept of washing dishes. Aren't they just going to get dirty again? Also paper plates NEVER need washing, thus saving the environment. Or if you have a dog, you never need to wash the dishes. A good dog. A cat won't do, they're too damned picky. :uglystupid2:

You are doing it wrong. Your wife IS the dishwasher.
She can't wash dishes and destroy my masculinity at the same time.
*sigh* Let's get this back on topic guys. By "rinse" obviously we mean what happens towards the end of the cycle when the machine gets rid of the suds prior to drying. The practice of pre-washing the "chunks" is completely different and belongs in its own thread.
My wife washes dishes (not as much or as good as I do) but she has destroyed my masculinity. Come on over and check out our fireplace mantle some time.

He's telling us the dog was a metaphor.
Or maybe her pet name for him is "Dog"?
She has many pet names for me but Dog aint one.

Pappy Boyingtonovitch!
It was an Absolut victory.
You have a little fighter ace in you.
Actually I was horrible at IL 2. I don't think I got a single kill in the whole game when I played it. Though I never tried it with a joystick just mouse and keyboard. And on a very old machine. It was fun anyway. Even sober.

Think of a dish as a re-usable paper plate...you never have to buy any more.
And I am really looking forward to this game. I'd be satisfied with SPWaW with no changes except graphics that were sharp on my monitor. Right now I'm kind of disappointed in what's out there.

Work is ongoing, and the guts are progressing well. We want to be sure to both fulfill the expectations of both the hardcore SP fans, as well as bring the game into the modern era with regards to the look and UX. It's an exciting project, but one that is moving forward.
Cheers
