The Mitsubishi A6M Zero was a long-range fighter aircraft operated by the Imperial Japanese Navy from 1940 to 1945. When it was introduced early in World War II, the Zero was considered the most capable carrier-based fighter in the world, combining excellent maneuverability and very long range. In early combat operations, the Zero gained a legendary reputation as a "dogfighter", achieving the outstanding kill ratio of 12 to 1.

Nice. I've long felt that the Zero was one of the most beautiful WW2 warbirds.

The Zero was an extraordinary and highly successful plane in the opening stages of the war.  That had more to do with superior air-to-air combat doctrines, better trained pilots, and the relative obsolescence of most of the planes they were fighting in the opening stages of the war.

It was a very successful plane for its time and absolute murder in a dog fight, but it was also a fragile knife-fighter whose weaknesses really started showing once the Allies started bringing baseball bats to the knife fight.  For anybody who wants an extremely detailed treatment of how the Zero fared in the evenly balanced aerial slugging matches fought in the South Pacific from June 1942-December 1943, I heartily recommend Eric Bergerud's Fire in the Sky.
