Title: Sorceror King
Post by: Nefaro on July 07, 2015, 06:45:12 PM
So .. this Stardock 4X game is supposed to be officially released on the 16th.

I originally picked it up in early access because it proposed to use different methods for the factions, or some such.  But the last time I played a few turns in EA, it just seemed like Fallen Enchantress with better looking 3D models (not those goofy looking anime things from FE) and fewer customization options.

If they managed to make each faction's style of play notably different, then I'll be happy.  But I'm not sure that ended up being the result.  They touted it being "asymmetrical" but I don't think it qualifies much more than other 4Xs.

Anyone put some time into it lately?

It's not asymmetrical at all.
It would have been, had they let you play either that feeble one-of-many kingdoms and the great sorceror king who has to deal with all of them.
But sadly, from my time with the early beta it seems more like an inferior Fallen Enchantress Lite, where one of your adversaries is way too overpowered.

Too bad as the concept sounded intriguing. It would sure be nice if the graphics upgrade was made available to those of us with FE: Legendary Heroes.

I would be playing more FE:LH if it wasn't for the bad art style on the humans.  And there are many overly cartoon-y humans present.  The rest of the game is fairly enjoyable, due to all the customization options.  Just gotta grimace through the 3D models that look like dolls for young children.

Reminds of the company the puts out the endless stream of 'new' Avernum rpg's...each one is pretty much the same as the last.

The 16th?  JULY 16th?  Wow, it must be a disappointing title for such a low key development and release.  Shame, I was hoping for something like a fantasy AI War.  That would have been epic.

Just FYI, Greenmangaming.com has this on sale today. I think you can get it for $29.99 and then apply another 25% off code on top of that.

I started up a Sorceror King campaign this afternoon, now that it's been officially released for a couple weeks.

Certainly reminds me of FE:LH but with changes.  Trade-offs, I suppose.  While some things could be considered "dumbed down", I'd say other stuff I didn't like too much was improved or streamlined.  It's obvious that SK still uses much of the same engine and parts of the mechanics of the earlier game, but with many changes.

The different leaders actually seem to be a bit more different than in FELH, although that may just be due to the new specialization trees and graphics/art.

Thus far my first two hours have given me a good impression.  Like a streamlined FELH without the repulsive gfx style.  Oddly enough, it reminds me most of a less clunky Worlds Of Magic with a friendlier UI.  I haven't even scratched the surface yet, so we'll see how it holds up further in.

AngryJoe and OtherJoe fool around a lot playing Sorcerer King and drinking 'mead'. (Possibly not mead.)

I occasionally drink a bottle or two of mead.  Usually in the winter.

It's just honey wine.

I've made the stuff before. It's actually easier than making beer but it needs a long time to mature (1 year or more) and some batches come out a little sweeter and some a little drier. You don't need much in the way of specialty equipment: a 6 gallon glass 'carboy', a plastic airlock, some vinyl tubing, a bottle capper or corker, caps or corks, some clean bottles, and a few other doodads, depending on how precise you want your ABV to end up. And, of course, mead yeast and about 18 pounds of high-quality honey. You can also flavor your batches quite easily with various fruits and herbs.
