Title: What the hell is "Axis Football?"
Post by: BanzaiCat on July 16, 2015, 02:22:53 PM
Apparently it's a thing on Steam. It just popped up into the slideshow previews.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/370090/

QuoteAxis Football Overview
Axis Football is a high-quality, 3D American Football Game. Choose from 32 team and play in either season mode or quick match against AI or local multiplayer. A great alternative to Madden, Axis Football features excellent controls and a unique aimed passing system that gives unprecedented accuracy and control of where the ball is thrown. Unlike the few other football games, Axis Football was specifically designed for play on a computer and takes full advantage of the mouse/keyboard controls as well as controllers.

Teams and Rosters
All 32 cities from the NFL are represented in Axis Football. Each team features its own ranking in passing, running, pass defense, run defense, and special teams. Additionally, each player in the game comes complete with their own stats for all of the various football metrics (speed, tackling, blocking, etc.). The names, numbers, and races of all players are stored in external files allowing for complete customization/modification of rosters. Complete mod support will be added soon!

Axis Football 2015 Features and Updates:
Season Mode with different schedules each year (no playing the same teams on the same weeks each season)
Controller Support. You can now use your XBox 360 controller to play!

2-Player, Local Multiplayer. Using two controllers
Basic Mod Support You have control over the name, number, and race of each player in the game

Steam Achievements.

Steam Trading Cards.

Coming Soon:
Coach Mode coming soon Pick the plays and let the AI control your players

Franchise Mode Play with your team for multiple seasons. This will include roster management, drafts between seasons, and much more. You will be able to play Franchises from either Coach Mode (picking plays but not controlling players) or Normal Mode (picking plays and controlling players).

New Player Models Higher poly count, better textures, separated meshes for jersey, helmets, and skin. This allows for more customization

Full Mod Support Design and create your own teams with custom graphics and logos. Have full control over the stats of all teams and players.

I know Axis Football doesn't have everything that you want it to have - yet! It's going to take some time to get all of the features that you have come to expect. I'm asking for your support in helping build a football game franchise that gives players options. I'm in this for the long-haul. If you decide not to purchase the game, I ask that you at least mention it to a friend!

Looks like yet another beta game in ongoing development, but FOOTBALL. Though it's the standard name-replacement type (Arizona Redbirds instead of Cardinals, that sort of thing). But still, FOOTBALL.

I know, I know.....I added it to my watchlist. Can't convince myself to buy it yet but damn, I want me some football!!! Gotta let this one simmer for awhile yet and see how it turns out.

Think it sounds pretty limiting.....if I am not mistaken you can only even play 5 minute quarters.  No thanks.

Oh man BC, you friggin' rock man!  I was just looking for a football game for PC on Steam yesterday with no real modern options.  Still stuck with Madden 08.

I may be the Grogheads Guinea Pig on this one...let me take a closer look.

Unless I missed it, it doesn't look like it has a GM or franchise mode.  Without those I might as well play Madden and by that I mean I might as well play FM15.

I thought it was going to be something about the Bundesliga  :)

On a side note if you are looking for a fun FIFA management sim this looks pretty accurate http://store.steampowered.com/app/208520/ although oddly it doesn't seem to be set in Switzerland  :)

The details mention having a Franchise mode, and all the extra features it requires, added some time in the future.

Whether that means they're currently working to add it for this one, or some later sequel, I don't know.   I would buy it in a heartbeat if it currently had a Franchise mode.   As it is, I'll wait and see if it gets added.

I wonder why it's not tagged as "Early Access" on Steam if it's not feature complete.

Sounds like it already has mod support for changing the teams & rosters over to official NFL stuff.

If I get a wild hair, and just feel like calling and running some plays in the meantime, then I may pick it up anyway.  Sounds like it was made for mouse & keyboard, which I'm curious about even if the gfx and animations don't look very good.

I keep reading more on the forums but people keep mentioning things like...

You play 2 halves of 5 minutes...not four quarters
Lack of penalties or no penalties
Seems like no coach mode-have to control the plays
Limited play books
Etc.

I guess with the new steam refund policy you could take a chance and play for two hours and if not your liking return it.  I am itching for a good pc football game as well, but in current state seems like a ways to go.

Crazy Americans with their game of pick up a ball with your hands and bash into as many guys as you can until you get dragged down and all the prep starts yet again for a few meters worth of progress.... and call that FOOTBALL, while the only time these guys use their feet is with a kick of the ball between a pair of poles creating a goal the size of half the stadium.
Bah.

These threads keep on doing that to me; expecting something nice about true FOOTBALL. You know, where the players actually play the ball around with their feet and the only guy allowed to use his hands is the goalkeeper.
Besides, no goal the size of half a stadium is present in real FOOTBALL either! There is actuall skill involved to score points!  :smitten: :knuppel2: O:-) :2funny:

Interesting article, though the guy is kind of being a dick with the holier-than-thou 'racist mascot' crap. I guess that kind of sentiment is par for the course in the mainstream though and it will generate butthurt where there is no reason to have it.

I did like that the developer posted in the comments (just 15 minutes ago, actually):

Hi Folks! Danny Jugan here, Developer of Axis Football. I'd like to thank PC Gamer for covering this and at least letting people know the game is out there! Since this is probably the first time many have heard of Axis Football, I'd like to take a quick second to shed some light on our plans.

First, we know the game is a far cry from what players are used to seeing in term of graphics, animation, and polish. This game was made by a tiny team with an extremely limited (<$500) budget. We have long-term plans for the franchise and are reinvesting game sale revenue back into the game to improve the areas that drastically need attention.

Second, our goal is to make this game what players want. We know modding is a huge desire and we're going to make it happen. We've already got roster mods in place and are adding full player stats, uniforms and team logos to the mix very soon. We're also adding franchise mode and improving gameplay across the board. You can see a full list of upcoming features here - http://axisgamesonline.com/p/axis-football-15

Third, I'd like to encourage you to check the game out and give it a chance. Axis Football features a really unique aimed passing system that has gotten a lot of positive feedback, and you'll be helping support the future development of this game. You can find the game on steam here - http://store.steampowered.com/app/370090/

Feel free to reach out to me directly for feedback, suggestions, or ideas!

Thanks again!

If they built this game on an under-$500 budget, color me impressed with what they've managed to pull off. I'll probably end up buying it at some point soon.

What's next? The hole of a golf course with the tag: Golf goal! ?

Apples and Oranges my dear Barth. We're talking about FOOTBALL.  Not Hockey, Not Golf... Football.  >:D
Besides, if you look at the ratio size puck:goal vs (true)football:goal, the hockey goal might just as well be much bigger than the football one. Hah! There.

And soccer is right behind it Most Boring Sports Ever Invented. 90 minutes of a bunch of light in the loafers players prancing around trying to put a little ball in a goal the size of an Olympic swimming pool...  :idiot2:

I am definitely not a FOOTBALL expert, but isn't the width of the goal something like 24ft, while the width of an American football goal post something like 18ft?  And us Americans also use our feet to perform kick-offs and punts, not just putting them through the pair of poles:)

All minor details and irrelevant to the point.  ;D

True football (soccer.. what does that mean anyway?) is a game of skill, speed, finesse and beauty. American 'Handball' is a game of 2m wide cavemen playing catch while spending far too much time talking about strategies which don't work anyway once the opposing cavemen start running.  :knuppel2:

Soccer is so bloody boring.  I mean, c'mon man, seriously.

In fact, soccer is a sport that is more entertaining the younger the kids are playing it.  A bunch of 5 year olds playing, now that is actually worth watching!

LOL.  I can laugh at the Europeans mocking the name of American Football.   ;D

But it's the only sport I'm familiar with that features some heavy pre-planned strategy, from both sides, on every play.  I suppose that's why it's so tough to program AI behavior and play outcomes and we see few attempts at going the full mile to do so.  Definitely a strategist's game, and a contact sport to boot.

If you believe that, then you don't know how to watch a baseball game (or what you're watching for rather).  Conversely, soccer is boring as hell to me as well but I'll take my own suggestion and trust that it's because I don't know what I'm watching for either (other than the obvious).

Even though I have my doubts, I'll keep my eye on this one....will be interesting to see if all the future items are part of patches or part of AXIS 2016, 2017, 2018, etc....a number of these will really need to be there before it likely can really provide a decent NFL experience.

All this talk about Football...made me do something a little crazy...purchased and downloaded Madden 08 ($9.99 from Amazon), which was the last PC version of the game.  On top of that, a group has been keeping the game updated since then at the link below, through last season.  It actually plays fairly well, of course with all the usual Madden craziness sometimes.  But even with that, still looks decent and probably is the best arcade football pc game right now...maybe Axis or something else surpasses it in the future but not likely anytime soon.

So if your looking for a football fix, might want to consider this option....even a little cheaper:)  Works fine on Windows 8.1 so far.

Ok, so I just finished my first half in Axis Football.

Quick impressions with 15 minutes of game time logged:

First, I agree with most of the reviews you've read about this game so far.  It certainly has potential but it is not Madden by any stretch.  From what I've been able to tell so far all of the teams share the same play roster, so you won't get unique plays for your favorite team like Madden.

Graphics are functional but nothing like a AAA title.  I didn't notice the poor animations that many are complaining about, but when I get more comfortable with the game I might start to notice that.  The animations certainly were effective enough to enjoy the game.

There are few options that I can tell beyond setting your resolution.  There are two 5-minute halves and I didn't see any options to change that.

There are no replays or any of that nonsense.  There don't appear to be any penalties.

Passing is interesting.  I like it.  You basically move a circle with your mouse to where you want to pass the ball.  Similar to shooting games, the circle of uncertainty shrinks the longer you leave the circle in one place.  It forces you to study your receivers' routes and then put the ball where they're going.  I enjoy how this is implemented greatly.

Mouse and keyboard seems to work just fine.  I haven't tried with a controller yet but I don't really see a need for it as the passing seems to be optimized for mouse-use.

The announcer isn't that annoying yet but he has a pretty small script range.  There is an option to turn him off.

Overall I think this game is at a good price point at ~$17.  Very reasonable for what you get.  Given the moddable nature of the game I'm sure that all sorts of interesting content will be developed in the future.  As it is, it's a fun beer and pretzels football game, certainly worth picking up if you want some football action and have reasonable expectations.  Don't go into it looking for Madden- it's not Madden.

Given that Madden is on Amazon for $10 that might be the better option if you're only going to get one football game.  I have room for two on my computer and I'm pleased with this purchase already.  So I give it the official Toonces thumbs up and seal of approval.  Give it a shot!   O0

Well, first game of the season didn't go so well for my team, the Dallas Wranglers.  This is on Pro Difficulty, there are 4 levels and Pro is the 2nd level with two higher.

Passing is tough.  I threw 5 interceptions which definitely didn't help things.

The AI seems to be pretty good so far.  Certainly kept me on my toes.

I like the 5 minute halves.  It keeps the game moving.  I'd like to see an option to change the half length.  I imagine that is something that will be coded in pretty soon.  I would also like to see a delay of game penalty/play timer.  That doesn't seem to be present yet.

Thanks for sharing Toonces....I am tempted to just buy to support them, even though I likely would hardly ever play it...just can't wrap my head around 5 minute halves, no penalties, etc.  Also looks like the number of plays are about half of real life, but yet the scores seem pretty high....must be a lot of big plays or scores coming off turnovers.

On the other hand, playing Madden 08 has satisfied my immediate need for football...although of course there are disadvantages to it as well.....for the most part I have given up hope that PC American football will ever fully return....I spend more time nowadays playing games like DKSports ActionPC football and hopefully someday OOTP's version of football once they resume development on it.

I spent a lot more time with the game and it is definitely beer and pretzels football.  It's a fun game but it's not serious like Madden if you know what I mean.  The game plays very fast; with two 5 minute halves I'm probably knocking games out in around 15 real time minutes.  The no penalties and no injuries removes a lot of the tension.  The playbook is adequate but since it's the same for every team there's not a ton of incentive to try the other teams out.  Their stats are different but their plays are all the same.

The game is super easy to pick up and play.  I'd say it's a good Friday night beer-drinking game, or perhaps something that's fun to sit down with when you only have 15 minutes or so to game.  Until there are more features, though, I can't see this being a serious football immersion game.  I think hardcore players are going to be totally turned off.

Think Battlestations:Pacific vs. CMANO.

If it had online multiplayer rather than just LAN this game would be a lot easier to recommend to everyone.

Yikes, no injuries either...guessing they don't have fatigue and subs either?

Appreciate the feedback and I guess for now will pass until more features included..

I was gonna wait, but after reading the developer's note about how they made this game with a budget under $500, I'm gonna buy it now. I spent more on lunch today that I'm gonna spend on this game. What the heck, who knows what they can do with another few bucks, lol.

THOSE GAMES ARE ALL BLOODY BORING....

Now, ladies under 30 nudist leapfrog is well worth watching  ;D

I once asked a friend of mine why he & his brother were watching women's tennis, after catching them doing so when I popped in for a visit.

His reply:  "I like to watch women jogging backwards while wearing a short skirt."

Made a little more sense after that.

Danny Jugan of Axis Games has been personally responding to emails on the PC Gamer review, which is cool. I invited him to stop by, so with any luck we can share our thoughts with him and let him know what we would love to see in his game (although the things they are considering are definitely on track!). Axis Football is clearly a labor of love, and after the sickening cash grab we saw with Front Page Sports Football this year, I hope Axis hits it out of the park.

And yes, I know I'm mixing my metaphors   ::)

Hey guys! Danny Jugan here - creator of Axis Football.  Steelgrave suggested that I stop by and say hello, so I thought I would take him up on his offer.

I'd first like to thank everyone that has supported the game.  I'm sure many of you have no idea what Axis Football is or what our plans are for the future. I'd be happy to type them out here, but Operation Sports just put up an interview they did with me that should cover just about all the questions you guys might have.  Here's a taste:

If this is the first time you've heard about Axis Football – or even if you've been following us for a while, I would like to be very clear about something.  We know the game isn't on the same level as others when it comes to a lot of features.  We know it looks like PS2/Xbox graphics if we're lucky, and we know the animations are rather limited. It offers some brand new, really exciting mechanics, but Axis Football was made with a $450 budget by basically one person.

I'm not saying this to boast. At the end of the day, no one cares how many people worked on it or what it cost to make.  I'm saying that to show how passionate we are, and to hopefully give you an idea of what we could create with a real budget.

I want very much to be transparent about our intentions and plans with this game.  We will reinvest game sale revenue back into the Axis Football franchise to build upon what we've started.  Trust me when I say that all of the small polish features that are missing bother us just as much as they bother you.  +

We want to fix them; we want to add tons of gameplay features; we want to amp up the graphics and visual effects; we want to allow for complete player, team, and league customization.  Unfortunately, all of those things cost money.  We're selling the game on Steam for $19.99, which is admittedly about $5-10 overpriced.

So why would a developer intentionally overprice a game?  The answer is that I believe in the sim and sports gaming community. I believe that they want better options, and I believe that they're willing to pay a little more to help build something to make that a reality.

TL;DR – We know this game doesn't look amazing. We're asking you to believe in us and support us by buying Axis Football 2015 so that we can funnel that money back into the game to add the features and polish that you want in a football game.

The complete interview can be found here - http://www.operationsports.com/features/2275/axis-football-2015-interview-a-look-into-the-future-of-the-franchise/

I'd like to welcome all of you to reach out to me directly at any of the contacts below.  I would be more than happy to answer any questions!

Thanks for stopping by!   O0

Really looking forward to a Franchise Mode being added along with all that entails, including drafting, trades, contract negotiation, etc.  American Football has been lacking in that genre for quite awhile and there still isn't much progress on the handful of old primitive ones.

That said, I may pick up this year's version, after some additions, because I'm curious about it's mouse & keyboard controls and the passing mechanic.

To be honest, I think graphics should be the last thing to worry about....I would much rather have a solid sim that truly models football (full 4 qtrs, fatigue, penalties, injuries, etc), versus state of the art graphics.   Just my two cents though.

Ditto. And I'm glad you stopped by, Danny. Hopefully you will be a regular visitor. We've been starved for a good American football game for years, it's an annual topic here on Grogheads, if not more often.

Thanks, guys!  We certainly have a lot of work ahead of us, but we're excited to bring in some features that people have really been asking about.  I'm also thankful for all of the feedback that people have given.  I feel like we have a strong sense of what the community wants for this game and that gives us the ability to really focus our attention on that.

We've got a patch coming out in a day or two that will contain some bug fixes, a few small features, and some additional mod support (player stats).  We've got new player models that are going to allow us to do some better optimization and player customization that should be in during the August update.  We'll also be adding in coach mode and making some rule changes to align better with the NFL.

Thanks again!

The August update that I mentioned will also include coach mode and some changes to the rules making it more sim-like.

I'll certainly keep an eye on progress and look forward as it evolves towards a true nfl sim....we desperately need one.

Well, I decided to purchase the game knowing it was not currently the game I want, but thought I would try and support the developer....pretty much has turned out what I thought it would be after reading forums and reviews...a lot of my thoughts are repeats from others.  My intent is not to beat up on the developer, but just to inform potential buyers that this game is a long ways off of being a "true" representation of American football.....I do hope that someday it evolves much closer to real life with the support of the people who bought the game.  If your looking for some light fun, you could get some enjoyment out of it...I'll continue to monitor for improvements.

The Good

It's an attempt at American Football (just not many doing it)
Personally, I think the graphics/animations are "good enough" for right now...would rather the developers focus on every other aspect before touching this part of the game.
Not sure what to think of the controls yet, but will list as a potential good because of the innovation of passing game...although could eventually get into the needs work category

Needs Work (based on the assumption this is eventually trying to be a true American Football simulation)
No coin flip
No play clock
No way to switch direction of the field (I like in Madden how you can choose field direction)
Stats don't always record....had 80+ yard run, showed my RB had an attempt an 0 yards
Lack of game stats (needs to mirror typical newspaper boxscores)
Lack of player stats (couldn't figure out how to see both teams, just my own)
No subs (so I am assuming no fatigue or injuries either)
There is weather...but no details...for example, it will show it raining, but don't see any indication of wind direction and speed (unless not in game)
No instant replay
No hot routes
No motion plays
All snaps happen fast...teams immediately huddle and go to the line of scrimmage...very little time runs off
Only 2 halves of 5 minutes
Odd CPU play calling late in halves....a lot of running plays when better option is passing
No fake punts/FGs (unless I missed them)
Lots of interceptions by both teams
No penalties
No franchise mode (draft, trades, rosters, etc.)
Not realistic OT rules
Not realistic conferences, schedule, and playoffs
No coach only mode
No real seaon stats
Pretty easy to run...don't have to throw many passes
Backward passes behind line scrimmage not completed, doesn't count as a fumble
Time continues to run during extra point and into the next kick-off

^ I agree with that entire post.  Except, the reason you don't choose your side is because there is no wind, so it's irrelevant.

It's a fun, beer and pretzels, "had a few beers and need to kill some time" game, but not a true football simulation.  I think it's easily worth $10, and worth $20 if you want to support the developer and hope for more.  I have to say the guy is super awesome with the communication and transparency with the community.

But it plays way, way fast.  I am happy with the purchase.  But it is what it is.

New patch today...nice to see progress...

New Features
•Coach mode is now fully functional. In Coach mode, players will select the plays, but will not need to control the players. We plan to add additonal features for Coach mode in the future once we incorporate additional player attributes like fatigue. Coach mode is available for Quick Matches and can be toggled on/off for seasons under the season home screen.

•Added Coach mode as an option for seasons. You can now toggle between Coach mode and the normal Player mode at any point during any of your seasons. Note that your preference is saved and will automatically default to your previous selection.

•Added a camera view toggle button in Coach mode that the player can use to toggle between a sideline view and the normal player view (from behind the offense).

•Preferences for sound on/off, announcer on/off, and pass aim sensitivity will now be saved.

•Added a new way to cycle through players on defense before the ball is snapped. You can now hold SHIFT and click or press X on the controller to cycle from the defensive line to linebackers and to defensive backs.

•Season mode now tracks several team-based stats for the duration of the season. You can view and sort the stats from the season home screen. We plan to expanded stats to individual players in the future.

•You can now fully mod both the home and away uniforms for every team! As with all modding, open the Mods folder in the root directory of the game's folder. There you will find a folder named Uniforms. Open that folder and read the README.txt file for instructions. You will need some sort of graphics editor program like Photoshop or Fireworks.

•We have implemented brand new player models. These models have higher texture resolution, higher poly count, and support normal maps (height/depth) for better visuals. Please note that these models are still a work in progress. While they look good and are 100% functional, the The artist we've hired to create them is making some small adjustments and will be finished in the next few days. We didn't want to delay the update for these insignificant changes, but are aware that there are some small imperfections that most will not notice.

Improvements
•Increased the visibility of the passing circle.

•Improved player AI on kickoffs. The kicking team will stay in their lanes better, and the return team will select more intelligent blocks. This helps prevent players from clustering or bunching together.

•Improved the AI's offensive play selection when losing or when the game is close to being over.

•Improved the AI's ability to select holes on running plays. You should see less of the runner colliding with their own players or running into blocked players.

•AI quarterbacks will now intelligently scramble in situations where no receivers are open.

•Improved AI quarterback throwing accuracy when attempting to lead receivers.

•Increase the anisotropic level of the field giving it a better resolution when viewed at low angles.

•Improved the logic for simulation games.

Bug Fixes
•Removed the bug that was sometimes causing players to run around a spot on the field in circles.

•Xbox controllers should now work with all Mac operating systems.

•Fixed the bug that was sometimes causing the player's text to flicker on the screen.

•Fixed the issue where calling timeout right before the ball was snapped would cause a lot of unexpected things to happen.

•The announcer will no longer say that a two-point conversion has failed when the player gets tackled but his forward progress carries him into the endzone.

•Fixed the bug where if you selected a run play, then audibled to another run play, the runner was unable to pick up the ball.

•The AI should now properly kick an onside kick when they're in an onside kick formation. Previously, they would line up for an onside kick, then kick it all the way down the field.

•Fixed the bug where the announcer would say there was a safety eventhough the runner's forward progress carried them out of the endzone.

•The crowd will no longer cheer if the sound has been turned off.

•Fixed the scheduling bug in season mode simulation where Dallas was playing an extra game and Denver was playing one less game. Note that this fix will only affect new seasons, not seasons that are already underway.

•Fixed the playoff seeding. Teams will now be placed into a playoff in such a way that teams with higher regular season ranks will be awarded home field advantage.

•The clock should now stop at appropriate times.

Sounds like they're impressively headed in the right direction. I'm still going to hold off until I hear from youse guys that own it, how much better the game is now.

I played a little last night and the graphics are still not that great and didn't notice much different, but really didn't spend much time.

Have to admit I got Madden 16 for my xbox last night and it actually plays very well so far...although I would like to see this game succeed, just not sure it can ever get close to the Madden experience.  I just wish EA would release a PC version, too bad.

It doesn't need to be Madden if they add a bunch of GM career sim features.  ;)

Since no other company has pulled it off yet, including the big companies....I am not very hopeful this will be the one....if and when OOTP returns to developing their football game is when we likely will get to the closet but it won't have the actual graphics part of the game.  With football season starting soon, I was really hoping to have been playing OOTP football this year:(  Pretty sure they haven't even found a replacement developer yet.
