Quote...Blomkamp's Alien 5 will bring back Sigourney Weaver as series' lead Ellen Ripley, and her Aliens costar Michael Biehn may well return as Dwayne Hicks too. The latest piece of concept art for the project unveiled by Blomkamp confirms that so much remains the plan now.

What the hell, man? I had no idea this was something in the works!
Damn, Ripley is wearing a suicide belt w/ deadman switch.
I wonder if this means Alien3, 4 etc. were just hypersleep dreams?
Wasn't the Ripley in movie#4 a clone or something? Maybe this is about what happened to the original.

Yeah, +1 too, to the above. Alien 3 has kind of grown on me but is still easily the worst movie of the franchise. Alien Resurrection was very odd and different but I kind of liked it, though it's just above Alien 3 on my franchise scale.
I had no idea this was even in consideration until it popped up on Facebook. I'm pretty stoked, especially including these two. Though the two of them have aged severely since Aliens came out.
Anyway, it will be interesting to keep an eye on this. Hopefully they're serious about making it and it's not just a pipe dream or ends up getting stuck in development hell.
I'd heard some rumors about Blomkamp having a story idea for a new Aliens movie and I had seen some of the concept art a few moths back. I didn't realize it was an official project though.

I don't know how I feel about this, really. Only Scott and Cameron have shown any actual talent in making films in this series, and I'd hardly call myself a fan of Blomkamp. Having said that, Alien 3 and Resurrection were both so bad that it can't hurt for someone else to have another crack at it.
I guess I'll end up seeing it, but my expectations are low. I'm much more excited about the sequel to Prometheus.
I'm not a fan of Blomkamp either, but I doubt he can do anymore damage to the franchise than has already been done.
Exactly.
Yep. And he at least seems to have a definite vision for the next film. Forgetting about Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection is a good starting point.
I know I've said it before but I liked Alien 3. So sue me.

He does blast that alien but that's not what does him in; it's later when he shoots an alien trying to get into the lift that he sustains his injuries. He does plenty throughout the film; he takes charge of the platoon when Apone dies in the first attack, and until that encounter in the lift near the end of the film he was instrumental in getting the survivors to the second dropship.
I thought it was defending the second drop ship he used the shotgun - I didn't mean he was useless just that his demise was near the end
My daughter watched "Alien" this past weekend...the wife and I were out of town at a friend's house so I wasn't aware. Not sure I"m terribly happy she did that to herself - she's only 14, though I was younger when I saw it, and I had nightmares for years because of it.

I liked the second half of Prometheus. The first half could have been so much better, and is also where most of the stupidity is concentrated. The first time I saw it, I was furious after the first 45 minutes or so. Thankfully Scott redeemed himself when things got going, and the ending has left me gagging to see where the story goes.
Also, looking at the deleted scenes, it could've been much worse. Hopefully the theatrical cut is what Scott considers to be the director's cut (especially after the continual and protracted mauling that Blade Runner was subjected to).
Hicks should have nailed Ripley when he had the chance. What a Alien-Killing kid they could've made. Did Ripley ever get any? In the entire series? Even the ones that now didn't happen? And how do the Aliens do it? I wouldn't get mine next to that Queen. Acid for blood!!! What if she's close to that time?
I think the implication was that one of the aliens gave Ripley the Cosby treatment while she was in hypersleep between Aliens and Aliens III.

She shags Clemens in Alien 3. She also shags an alien in Resurrection, but technically that wasn't Ripley, it was a hybrid of her clone and an alien.
Aliens established that she had a daughter on Earth (passed away by the time Ripley made it back). So she shagged someone before she shipped out on the Nostromo.
It's that daughter who is the main character in Alien: Isolation.

I'm okay with them being hypersleep dreams. That keeps them still semi-canon for anyone who cares.
Unless the film will be made using CGI characters, though, there's no way the principles will look as good as in the concept art.

Another thread has now crossed the event horizon.
I might have been surprised that a thread can go from the horrors of the Alien franchise to "sparklenipples" in but a few pages, when I first came on board here, but now I'd be disappointed if someone didn't bring up ghey, Hillary Clinton, sparking battery cable clamps attached to fat nipples, or hooching Sammy Hagar up the ol' poopchute within that frame.
Actually this kind of thing should appear on the front page, so maybe you old dudes are losing your edge.

I've often felt that nipples should sparkle. Or light-up anyway, in the dark it would make it easier to find them. Now the other stuff doesn't need any more light on it, Thank You.
If you have a hard time finding nipples in the dark, I don't know what to tell you.
I quizzed my daughter on Alien, and found out she bailed out when the chestburster came out. I had to explain to her that was really the only bloody/gory scene in the whole movie (at least that I remember...need to watch it again I think), and that Alien was a LOT more about tension and shite you can't see but knew was there, than action and/or bloody stuff. Though that one scene is more than enough to make up for a lack of gore otherwise...
Ridley Scott didn't fully reveal to the cast what was going to happen in that scene, so he could capture their natural reactions. I imagine there were some soiled shorts.

Re other gory Alien scenes: the first time the grown Alien attacks can be pretty traumatic, though not to the same degree. The next 'goriest' part is probably Ash's death. I can't recall any other actually gory parts -- Captain Dallas just disappears from the theatrical cut never to be seen again, and... I don't recall when or how Yaphet Kotto dies, though I remember he's bleeding from the mouth. But it can't be on the same level as Ash, much less the chestburster.
No, you've covered it all, Jason. Chestburster and death of Ash are the only scenes that could be called gory as far as I'm concerned.
I'm dying to show the Alien series to my kids, but at 9 and 5, it ain't happening any time soon. :(
I didn't think of Ash's death scene. It didn't bother me when I was a kid. I remember thinking how weird it was. The only thing somewhat disturbing about it was the body thrashing around.
Well, that and his attempt to kill Ripley by, in effect, orally raping her with a rolled up magazine. {shudder}
The Ash death scene unsettling, him covered android juice and expressing admiration for the Alien.
If you have a hard time finding nipples in the dark, I don't know what to tell you.
I dated a girl once who's nose was bigger than her breasts. You don't want to make that mistake in the dark. :uglystupid2:
That should be part of the next Alien chapter....The Nose.
I always found he face sucker to be quite icky. And it folds nicely into the oral rape theme noted by Pratt.
I would thank/blame Geiger for that theme, but the writer(s) seem to have been going on themes like that from the beginning -- he was apparently hired to help fit the theme.
Alien: nothing if not a super-deluxe upgrade to 50s horror sci-fi, except without any of the fun of those movies. ::) Certainly a valid artistic goal, but one reason why I'll always like Aliens much better.
The Turner Classic Movies channel had a night of 50's classic Sif-Fy movies on about 2 weeks ago. Earth vs the Flying Saucers, It Came From Outer pace, and a couple of others. Took me back to some good times. Was that really what America looked like back then?

Actually it owes more to Dark Star than anything else, Alien being the film that (writer) Dan O'Bannon wanted to make in the first place. But none of this should detract from the fact that Alien is, in my not at all humble opinion, one of the finest horror films ever made. Scott even considers the theatrical cut to be more or less the director's cut and doesn't think, even after all these years, he'd change anything.

Me too. Its format lends itself better to repeated viewings in my opinion. I'll watch Alien if I'm in the mood for a sci-fi horror film, but I'm more frequently in the mood for something more gung-ho.
The great thing about Alien is it gets both the sci-fi and the horror right.
I watched Event Horizon about a year ago and lost my love for it. When I first saw it about 20 years ago it scared the hell out of me and I was thinking about it for weeks after seeing it. Curious what you guys think of that one.

- Shantytown
- social commentary on the rich vs. the poor
- physical transformation of the hero
- SADF bad guy heavies
Neill, if you are reading this, when you make A5, please consider:
- no shantytowns
- no SADF bad guys heavies
- no physical transformation of Ripley
but I'll give you the whole soulless corporation social commentary. Its already part of the Aliens universe.

massive, pointless fight scene - hilarious film - it was the go to film for me and friends when doing A-levels, that and Cannonball Run
A-Levels? Who knew Rowdy Roddy Piper could act? Loved the music in the film.
They Live was a colossal turd, but its campy awesomeness is inversely proportional to its turd-ness.
Plus, this is probably the most awesome movie line ever in the history of film:
(https://www.grogheads.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.quickmeme.com%2Fimg%2F4f%2F4f733c986b5470141c429c1cbe986af81a179e725d14f396f68429ae616fdca5.jpg&hash=b69ce9e26274f3e17f277173daaca71ab48aa987)
Thus the reason for it's greatness. Can you see Arnold trying to deliver that line? Or Stallone? Bruce Willis maybe. Another great line is when the sidekick see the aliens for the first time, "Where did they come from"? "It sure as hell wasn't Cleveland". It was the 80's man.
I loved They Live!!! I saw it in the theater with my Dad...I think I was 12.
Three years after that movie came out I went with a friend of mine on a boozy road trip up to Gloucester, MA (co-incidentally right after the infamous 'Perfect Storm' had passed through) for a visit to some of his anarchist-artist-fishermen friends. When we got to their 2nd floor place overlooking part of the harbor i noticed that there were a whole bunch of goofy little white signs with exhortations to 'consume', 'watch', 'obey', 'conform', etc. taped around their apartment.
Only three years in and it was already a cult film.
I saw Roddy Piper on TV one time talking about the movie. He said John Carpenter was a big Hollywood Lib. and the aliens were supposed to represent Reagan Republicans with Rolex watches. He said Carpenter wanted to make the movie more anti-capatilist but he, a Canadian and a little bit crazy, wouldn't go along with the lines Carpenter wanted him to say. And they had a big fight about it. Don't know if it's true but that's his story. :coolsmiley:
^^One can only hope that the fight would mirror the one he and fellow ' hero' character Keith David had in the movie. So long, so stupid, so damn funny.
Yeah, Piper said Carpenter wanted that fight scene to be the longest one ever filmed. He said he thought it was pretty dumb.
He got what he wanted. We're still talking about it 27 years later.
Oh lord, that movie is going to be 30 years old in 2018. Sheesh.

I guess I'm the only one in the Western World that didn't hear that. He was tough for a guy that wore skirts on TV.

In less sad but more thread-appropriate news: Alien: Isolation is one of the games on sale at Gamersgate this weekend. Around $15 if I recall correctly.
Man, I ended up catching most of Alien Resurrection on TV the other night...what the Hell was that mess supposed to be?! I remembered it being lame, but it's AWFUL. I understood what they were going for with the third movie : a return to the claustrophobic horror vibe of the original Alien, where one monster is savaging a dwindling group of survivors who are wholly unequipped to deal with it. Resurrection, though...YIKES.
I don't know what they were expecting after asking Jeunet to direct, although to give "credit" where it's due, I'm pretty sure we have Weaver to thank for the idiotic sex scene and its result. Like most hardcore Alien fans, I view Resurrection as an...interesting...film in its own right but pretty much ignore it with regard to canon. Most of the scenes involving the crew of the Betty are entertaining enough in my opinion, I thought they had a good camaraderie going.
While we're on the subject, I absolutely loathe Alien 3. It's a spectacularly dull film that gives way too much air time to people spouting nonsense and looking hungrily at the only girl in the complex. Eurgh. Even the final chase/trap sequence is boring as hell. "But that's because the execs ruined Fincher's vision! You need to watch the assembly cut!" Uh yeah, still dull as dishwater. If I were David Fincher I'd have washed my hands of it too.
I like Alien 3 a lot - I don't see it as boring at all but 'minimalistic.' I like the idea of a new confrontation with minimal weapons. It's in no way as good as Alien or Aliens but as a variation on that Alien theme I enjoy it.
I've never seen Resurrection (thankfully).
I don't mind 3, either. It's not a great movie by any stretch, but it's okay. At least it kinda makes sense (which is more than I can say about 4).
Three is terrible. Apart from the horrid sexy-time stuff in 4, it's a better movie than 3. The underwater scene with the grenade launcher alone makes it a better movie than three.
3 & 4 both suck. It's a toss up as to which sucks less. I tend to give the nod to 4 just because it had Ron Perlman. On the other hand, Dan Hedaya as the general in charge of the research ship was epically bad casting. All I could think of was, "Who the hell put Nick Tortelli in charge?".

Dude, hate to break it to you but that was kind of a major plot point in Alien. No guns, improvised weapons. Heck even Aliens touched on it with the whole no heavy weapons fire while they're in the tunnels near the reactor. And the Drop Ship crashing and taking out the APC so that they're totally effed. And both did it better than 3.

Honestly, large parts of Resurrection are very watchable. There are some memorable scenes with Ripley, some more with Call, the crew of the Betty are a good laugh (and Perlman shines as he always does). The middle third of the film is genuinely entertaining when everyone's just trying to get the hell off the ship. It's a shame that it gets progressively sillier, along with some other blemishes like Dan Hedaya's miscasting as brother Mirth points out. I also thought that Brad Dourif seriously overdoes the mad scientist, although that was probably encouraged by Jeunet.
And why would they program the default behavior for the ship in an emergency to return to Earth. Something wrong on the secret research ship conducting Xenomorph cloning? Yeah let's send it straight back to Earth.
Guess that's what you get when you put Nick Tortelli in charge.
Sigourney Weaver actually made the basketball shot in Resurrection. So that automatically makes it better than A3.

Yeah, on the first take, too. Perlman's reaction is genuine.
I will agree that the first half of Resurrection is okay (Hedaya's casting aside), but the second half...oof. Just oof. Why does the alien queen give birth now, and why does it birth a completely new kind of alien? If the alien queen now births live creatures, where in the Hell did the eggs come from that were set as a trap at the end of that swimming sequence? Hell, where did the stupid science people get the initial set of eggs they used to birth face huggers and create the initial batch of aliens? Why does the alien queen's anguish at giving birth mean the other aliens go grab Ripley and bring her there for...what...moral support? Why does said alien think Ripley is mom after it's born (in the running for dumbest thing in a movie EVER)? Hell, they never even really explain what this Ripley even IS. Why does the guy with the alien in him suddenly become indestructible and able to take 17 pistol rounds when said alien begins bursting from his chest? Also, why did anyone still think that Winona Ryder was anything but an obnoxious screen presence in 1997?! I kept HOPING for someone to shoot her, and then when it does happen, POOF she's an android! Haha! You're not rid of her that easily! And then there's Brad Dourif...with each passing scene, I wanted someone to crush his skull that much more. At least that actually happened, and he wasn't a goddamn android! And then there's the whole 'Winona Rydroid accessed the mainframe and learned all the secrets, so she knew where to get the Betty to go to destroy the project and'...WHY?! Why in the Hell would any of that even happen?! Is this what androids do in their spare time?
Let's construct the floor of the chamber where we're keeping the aliens out of a metal that's easily dissolved by their blood! Let's have the ship we're conducting this research on AUTO-RETURN TO EARTH if something goes wrong! With ideas this goddamn stupid, how did Weyland Yutani become powerful to begin with?!
Quote from: Arctic Blast on August 02, 2015, 10:39:21 PM

Intergalactic porn.
A4 does pretty well self-destruct in the final act, I have to agree. Even people who enjoy it (I do), I've never seen defend it after... well, after the underwater sequence more or less, or after the point Ripley gets sucked down into the Xenorgy.
But I do give it credit for trying something different with the A2 formula; and I give A3 credit for trying something different with the A1 formula.
And there's this: A1? Great for many reasons but not at all fun. A2? Great for many reasons (dependent on A1) and also lots of fun. A3? Variable quality and not at all fun. A4? Variable quality but often fun.
I've watched A3 several times, including the director's cut, and I'd have to look up references to remember what the major differences are; but it's the film I've watched least often. A4 is at least more fun. Given a choice between the two I'll always pick A4; I'll never watch A3 unless I'm "doing the series" or perhaps am curious to remind myself I have some kind of opinion about it or just because I haven't watched it in a while (and it doesn't completely suck -- but I also remember then why I don't watch it often.)
Given a choice between 1, 3, and 4, I'll probably watch 1, even though 4 is more fun, just because 1 is a better quality movie overall and more important to the overall story for obvious reasons.
But given a choice between any of the four, I'll choose 2 any time unless I have a specially particular reason to watch one of the others.
(And then I'll cheerfully continue ignoring Prometheus... >:D )

Am I the only one looking forward to Prometheus 2 then?
^Nope. I'm looking forward to it too. Seeing it with Star's imaginary girlfriend.
She's not imaginary. She's very real. And the blow-up valve is in the back. I liked Promethius well enough but was so ignorant of the subject that I didn't realize it was an Alien prequel until the very end. It was well done in my opinion. But what do I know? I've been banished from all things Alien because I liked Alien vs Predator.

I really enjoyed Event Horizon back in the 90s. Still do, although it may be showing a little age these days.
Down with the extra-dimensional space warp demonry. O0
Maybe the reason I enjoyed Prometheus is because I knew it was an Alien prequel beforehand? I've had people mention they didn't like it too much, but when I asked if they knew it was an Alien prequel and origin story for them, their eyes kinda lit up with abrupt recognition and some lights turned on. Just mentioning that made them perk up and consider watching again, with that newfound knowledge.

I rarely ever suggest remakes or reboots or other charlatanism, but maybe a remake of Event Horizon would be worth it. Star's girlfriend would love it.
There were so many profoundly stupid things in Prometheus that it was difficult to accept it was a Ridley Scott film. He went off the rails with Prometheus as badly as Cameron did with Avatar. Once great directors substituting pure eye candy for complex characters, believable dialogue and an intelligent plot. Aka "Lucas Syndrome".

It was on TV one night a few years back. I tuned it, figuring it couldn't be as bad as I had remembered, and would at least be something I could mock.
It may have been worse than I remembered. It was so awful that it was too bad to mock. I had to turn away. Just a putrid film.
I wouldn't want Plinkett to do B&R. Too easy, and the team go after films that are generally liked or which should have been good.
If the Plinkett team went after Batman 89 and Batman Returns, that would be more appropriate.
(Though actually Chris Sims and David Uzimeki already did that for their Batmanology articles at ComicsAlliance (http://comicsalliance.com/tags/cinematic-batmanology/). And defended B&R as the best of the films directed or produced by Burton.)

District 9 movie was. But I didn't get into it. Actually stopped watching it about 2/3rds through. Chappie looked like a damn kid movie to me, didn't bother.
Guess I'm on the other end of the Alien preference spectrum from some of you.
I'm with you Nef. Hated District 9 and wasn't at all interested in Chappie. I didn't really know what to think when he was announced as the director, though; I'm not expecting great things from the film anyway, plus this is a series that had Jean-Pierre Jeunet at the helm for one instalment!
I hated District 9 and I'm never going to watch Chappie. Still, I have some faith in Blomkamp to deliver on an Aliens movie. The concept art he produced to help pitch his story idea looked great. I know that doesn't mean much, but it gives me a little hope. And honestly, he can't do much worse than the last few movies.

District 9 was way too heavy-handed with the alien apartheid theme. I don't need a film to beat me over the head with it's message like that. Alien Nation was a far more interesting film that covered similar themes.

Precisely this, this is why I hated District 9. I don't like it when themes are rammed home with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, I find it insulting and makes a film impossible to enjoy. If the same film had been made by a more capable director it could've been good.
