Title: Pride of Nations - New Patch
Post by: bbmike on July 26, 2015, 07:14:36 AM
Not sure how I missed it, but a new Pride of Nations patch (http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?38402-PON-1-04-public-beta-patch-updated-July17th-2015) was released last week!

it mentions improvements with turn processing...but was reading in forums that one player seemed satisfied it went from 13-14 minutes to 7-8 minutes...that still seems long to me....was one of the reasons I never fully stayed engaged with the game.

I never had a problem with the turn length.  I just brought a book to read.  My main problem was with broken UI issues.  I remember clicking on a treaty hoping to get more info and it was canceled instead.  Also couldn't scroll the treaty list so I couldn't see the latest treaties.  Wording of treaties was such that I couldn't tell what they did.

I guess I am just spoiled with other games where it typically is pretty fast....I am not a very patient person to wait 7-8 minutes every turn, even with a book in hand:)

I don't have a lot of gaming time to begin with, and at 62 I may not live to see the end of the game.

No amount of patching can fix PON.  The game will forever remain a loose collection of great ideas presented via Excel spreadsheet.

Maybe we need a team of French Canadian indy programmers to obtain what they think are the rights to PON, overhaul the engine, and then sell it as a new game.  Oh, wait...     >:D

59 here but I'm (un)voluntarily retired so I have the time if not patience for it.  However, at 1600+ turns in grand campaign, that would be several hundred hours of turn processing time.  I could finish a couple dozen books by the time the game was over!

I reinstalled PrON and patched to 1.03 (the patch after I last played it).  My scrolling problems with Foreign Ministry are gone now.  I simply couldn't play the game if I couldn't review/cancel my treaties.  Will have to give this a new try (after playing the dozen other games I've bought and haven't played yet).

So I just booted this with the latest patch and played the combat tutorial. The turn delay was still intolerable. At least 2 to 3 minutes...for a tutorial scenario limited to one turn, that struck me as grossly excessive.

I haven't played much at all, but I did have a problem with the game locking up while initializing.

Here is a thread, the second post really, that fixed it for me.

here is what the post says.

Check under My Documents\Paradox Interactive\Victoria 2\map\cache delete all the files in there and try reloading the game.

Hope this helps.

I don't see an equivalent to that in the Pride of Nations or VGN folders.  Are you sure this Victoria 2 fix applies?  Personally I didn't have a crash there.

How did you install the patch?  I had uninstalled my game so I reinstalled the 1.02 game, patched to 1.03 then applied the 1.04 patch.  Had no troubles.  I did copy my old save games files over to the new directory before trying to run it.

Sorry, I searched on PoN and didn't even notice that was Victoria 2.  It does work for V2 though, I knew I'd done it somewhere.  I never had any problems with PoN from Steam, now my memory is a different matter.  :)

That Victoria 2 cache folder was in the game's install location.

As for PrON, I'd like to give it another shot sometime.  My biggest concern with the previous version were some notable bugs.

BBMike posted a new patch for this on the Holiday Sale Matrix thread

http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=345&t=50532&sid=f2586a6eae2630aa5cebd6576c59ddc5 (http://www.ageod-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=345&t=50532&sid=f2586a6eae2630aa5cebd6576c59ddc5)

Has anyone put any playing time into it? Can you install this from the 'base' GamersGate download, or will an update level be required prior to this one?

Anyone interested in starting up another GrogHeads MP game if the patch fixes a lot of the bugs?

Incidentally, long ago I got "Scramble for Africa" as my only DLC, because the Steam description read "research new units and technologies". I'm not sure how real that description is...? Possibly new units and techs were released as part of the overall campaign in the base game, along with this DLC, which otherwise just provides a unique starting date/situation if the DLC is used.

I was Russia last time.  I think you kept trying to get into a fight with AI Austria in order to mess with UCG in Sardinia. I was busy chasing the undead armies of the Khan around the Aral Sea and getting my face kicked in by the Turks once the Crimean War started.

Would we (or y'all) be playing with the play-any-nation mod?

If we can only play the majors (plus the two beta patch offerings), I call the Ottomans.

Ahh.. I was trying to mess with Austria to help UCG, or I didn't intend to cause him troubles. But the UK was on my Ass.. I do remember your battles with the re spawning hordes...

So far

Tuna = France
SDR = Russia
JP     = Ottomans (seem to remember them being a pain in my ass in North Africa last game)
Oj's Dad = ?
Nef (if he bites) = ?

FYI, this is a learning experience for all.. lol.. totally forgot everything I learned the first game, but hopefully will pick up bits and pieces quickly.

SDR do I need to get base game to a certain level before I do that patch? I'll be starting from GG download since I don't think I have it installed anywhere right now.

Is the Steam version fully updated yet?

Is this recent patch not labeled as a "beta" update, like the previous ones?

I'm still rather wary about all the bugs and incorrect scripts that always screwed up multi-player games in the past.  But I'd be willing to give it another shot if this latest patch is supposed to be the squirrels' nuts.

I don't exactly recall how to best handle PrON's economic side, especially since the world market's behavior has changed since my last play.  The international crisis mini-game was always a bit of a mystery, too.   But I learn this stuff quickly enough.  Trial by fire!

So.. are we doing the base game start (1850 iirc)?

I suppose some of us need to play as Germany and Austria-Hungary in order to make this more interesting.  Now that France, Russia, and the Ottomans are filled.

Therefore, I'll volunteer to be the meat in the whipping boy sandwich with either Germany or Austria-Hungary.  If someone else prefers one over the other then I'll take whichever,  Although I'd prefer Germany (if only for the few colonies to toy with) if nobody joins me in filling out central europe with one of those two.   I'd choose Britain or Japan, but the first is a lot of colonial micromanaging to start off with, and the second is a snore-fest for the first decade-plus of the default start.

The USA is just way out on it's own, doing it's western hemisphere thing and pushing Spain's colonies around for a long time (plus civil war of course).  Not as snore-ish as Japan's start, but still isolated from the main action.

I'm not sure but it looks like you need to be patched up to 1.04 and then apply the 1.04.3 hot fix.

I'd be interested in playing Russia or the U.S. If we're starting at a later date than 1850, I'd also take Japan.

I have the Gamersgate version and I downloaded yesterday and was able to install the patch fine.. but i did have a couple of later patches.. 1.03 and the 1.04 before. But patches seemed to install fine.. However I didn't have a chance to 'play' yesterday to see that all is well.

Edit: However I did contemplate purchasing again on Steam since it's on sale to make the whole process easier. FYI, that patch is huge.. 1.4 Gig!

Re Steam patching: the game was updated to 1.04 back in early September. There have been incremental patches and hotfixes since then (including a hotpatch to fix the unpopular 1.044 change of needing a 7th level imperialism to declare war on someone. This was meant to keep the AI from having a bunch of insane Paradox-ian wars going on with Korea declaring war on Chile, etc.) Current Steam version reads as 1.04.2, Sept 30th. However, the hotpatch on Steam seems equivalent to 1.04.3 on the Matrix forum which can be downloaded here: ftp.ageod.com/pub/PON/PONQF1043.exe

The Matrix update 1.04.3 page reads:
QuoteThis will be a rather heavy archive, because baring a few configurations files that are generated automatically, plus your private and personal settings file, you get almost a full setup. The missing files are there to ensure you have a legit copy of PON.

This is done this way so were are sure there is no issue coming from a missing or misplaced file, as official 1.04 is suspected to leave some files behind.

However, later in the thread there is concern that the patch path doesn't work. I have tried it and it does currently work (for a 1.4 Gig update, naturally.) Another link in the thread that I haven't tried is: https://we.tl/1PR7lu0LAm

Re nation choosing: there is a small fan mod that makes all the nations choosable, if someone doesn't want the main ten (including Ottomans and Belgium as of the late 1.01h build). The downside is that the developers included few scripts for them, and a player has to do a bit of text editing to make the starting troops capable of being moved. I suppose for mp purposes I don't recommend it. ;)

So currently the unattached playable nations are:

United Kingdom
United States
Prussia (i.e. Germany later)
Austria (which starts holding or influencing a lot of Italy)
Piedmont-Sardinia (balloon and handbag capital of Europe, eventually becomes Italy)
Japan
Belgium (somehow not the handbag capital of Europe, despite being the most economically efficient nation for its size at gamestart)

I will mention here that I have no idea how to even start a multiplayer game; but someone read the rules previously, so I'll just follow their lead.  O:-)

In regard to play options, some things to consider checking:

Under the Media tab:
Pause after battle
Turn Compression (kind of necessary for multiplayer games; supposedly reduces potential for save file corruption!)

Under the Game tab:
Use Fog of War (duh)

Redeployment -- the first checkmark makes it impossible for players to freely redeploy any commanders or HQs (they have to travel normally) The AI always gets three free redeployments per turn (except for the final option which gives them 6). Different options give the human player(s) one, or three free redeploys. Any redeploys suffer significant maluses for one turn and cannot move that turn. I'm inclined to suggest either none (the default) or three for us squishy bags.

Activation rule -- the three options allow commanders to always move troops; to give a large movement and combat penalty if the moving troops don't have an activated commander; or to give a large chance of troops not moving at all without an activated commander. I'm inclined to go with option 2, but option 3 might help keep minor nation troops from wandering much.

Delayed commitment -- this affects how much certain factors will delay troops getting into battle once committed. I guess I recommend the most historical version, the far right option.

Historical attrition -- the middle option gives non-moving attrition for human players only. The other options are no attrition for standing units, and non-moving attrition for the AI. Basically the game doesn't know what to do about attrition, but the working theory is probably that any lesser nations just won't have attrition being small enough and rural enough to live off the land (even in a desert) or off carried supplies. Turning this on for everyone simply erodes the AI troops quickly. I recommend either turning it off for everyone or leaving it as it is for humans.

Randomized generals -- four levels; maybe second level is best? (Slight randomization of historical stats.)

Extended (military) Pool and Extended Structure Pool -- there are levels for granting up to twice the historical allowances. I guess I prefer historical?

SOIs and Claims -- historical SOIs actually give a nation prestige penalties for holding unhistorical spheres of influence, which seems insane! Presumably this is meant to curb freaky AI exploits. Expanded SOIs will not grant negative prestige (but can still grant no prestige). Historical instead of extended claims seem the better way to balance out of control expansion: there are ways in-game to bring a population to be loyal to you, allowing you to make a permanent territorial claim on a region.

Under the AI tab:

The ideal recommended designer settings are Activate AI (duh), slight Detection Bonus (though I'd be okay with no special bonus), sergeant ranking (second level rank, no bonuses or debuffs), normal aggressiveness, use all behaviors, give more time, and second level (+1) activation bonus roll (though I'd rather see none to bonus rolls).

I can host again unless someone else wants to.

Basically, to run a PBEM game, the host sends country specific .TRN files to each other player.  They load this file into their save folder  (default X:\PONGame\PON\Saves\).  Then they load the game, do their turn, and save without hitting end turn button.  Then each player goes into their save folder and emails the host their .ORD file.  The host runs the turn and emails out the .TRN files again.

Gah.  I am actually now considering buying this game again so I can get the new patch (my version was purchased from GamersGate, which is no longer available there).  I continue to be drawn in by PON, despite its issues.  Oy...

Imho, it should still be in your library.
It is, but as I've long understood it, the GG version of PON cannot be updated to the most recent patch.  (I'm not sure if it was updated to even 1.3.)

Updated fine for me.. but I did have a 1.03 and 1.04 from before which I installed first.. I'll try going straight from GG to 1.04 one on my laptop when I get a chance.

is there a trick to getting the 1.04.3 patch to work with Steam?  After installing I get an error that AGEsettings.exe cannot be found and it aborts.

Thanks

I suspect the trick is to install it on your non-Steam version.

I'm not an authority on the inner workings of Ageod games by any means, but I can't imagine that a multiplayer game involving Steam and non-Steam versions patched to different levels would give good results.  Sooner or later something will go bonkers.  The non-Steam versions are already pretty finnicky.

It's been years since I played PON and I don't remember how the economy works.  But playing as the house of Savoy would be tempting.  When is this game going to start, and how often would one have to send out a turn?

Cagliari is lovely this time of year.

So.... we may all have to be using the same version of PrON sold from the same location?

Plus the GG version may or may not need some of the intervening updates, which may or may not be available for d/l right now?

To GG or to Steam.  That is the question.  And will they both work with this patch, together?    C:-)  My GG version doesn't have all the DLC, although I doubt those are needed to run the main campaign..?

What a mess.  I want to give this an MP run but unraveling the current mysteries may be the most challenging part.   :uglystupid2:  :P

JP brought up a good point about a specific game option; the SOI and Claims setting.  Do we want to be rigidly held to historical spheres of influence, colonization, and territorial claims?  Or should we have more flexibility in our foreign tinkering?

I believe it defaults to having the penalties for non-historical influence/claims, because the option to turn it off was only later added in an update when players said they didn't want it to be THAT restrictive.   I'm kinda leaning towards having it turned off, for an MP game, to allow more flexibility and unforeseen consequences.

You did a fine job juggling that stuff before.  Got my vote.      O0

Ditto for SDR running it again.

I'm glad someone else got around to testing the 1.04.3 patch on their Steam install before I did.  :D

As noted, I strongly suspect Steam has been effectively patched to 1.04.3 even though when the game is loading it reads as .2 incremental.

Unfortunately, in a game that has a history of weird problems cropping up in long-form multiplayer, I'm dubious that a short experiment of a stable crossplay of versions would return reliable reliability (or words to that effect).

You may be correct.  The .3 quick fix was supposed to fix the declaration of war issue.  The imperialism level to declare war had been set to 7 in .2.  Pocus said this could be manually changed by editing the 7-Declare War.dpi file and changing the minimperialism setting to 4.  In my steam version it is already at 4, so hopefully the patch was applied.

I just installed from Steam today.  My version says 1.04.2, but the 7-Declare War.dpi file has the minimperialism set to 4.

If we can play other counties besides the big ones, I'm for playing China.  Unless Nef wants me to do Germany or Austria and he plays the opposite.

We should be able to play with different versions.  When Tuna, UCG, and I played last time, Tuna and I had the GG version while UCG had the steam one and things seemed OK for the most part.

I think we should go for the bog-standard game without mods just to lessen the chance of something game-breaking coming up.  That gives us the following 10 countries to choose from:

U.K.

France (Tuna)

Prussia  (Nef?)

Austria  (OJ's Dad?)

U.S.A.

Russia  (SDR)

Sardinia-Piedmont (Philippe?)

Japan

Ottomans (Jason)

Belgium

I'm willing to switch to Japan if someone would rather have the expansive Ottomans to play with on the edge of everyone's colonialism: the Turks have the second largest territory after Russia after all, and tons of opportunity for improvement. I know people find Japan boring in the early game, but I'm okay with focusing down a bit.

I'm downloading the hotfix now to my GG (aka Paradox ) version.  It's gruesomely slow, but I think that's because it's coming from an ftp server. It will finish eventually, and I will have a few more grey hairs.

I probably shouldn't ask this, but apart from making sure everyone is using the same version, what exactly am I fixing with the hotfix?

(In my heart of hearts I think we should probably wait until things work their way to Steam and then all use the Steam version, but the troops at Ageod are pretty busy right now, and who knows how long that could take...)

I'd prefer using the Steam version, since that's the one I own with all the stuff.  Can try to patch it with the forum update/hotfixes/wotnot but not sure if compatible.

FYI, On my son's laptop I was able to upgrade my GG version straight up to the 1.04.3 latest patch (not sure the exact version number - but the one in the post). All seems well. The reason the download is slow Phillipe is because it is huge (1.4 Gig). It's basically a full install I guess.

I think the experimental news we got upthread is that the hotfix directly from Matrix is NOT compatible with the Steam version.  :-\ (Not to be confused with the question of whether the Matrix and/or GG updated version can multi-play with the updated Steam version.)

Someone should start or add to a thread at Matrix, and ask if the Steam version incorporates the few other things besides the imperialism war-declaration reduction threshold from 7 to 4. From what I recall looking at the Matrix thread linked above, mostly the other differences involve a few more missing string description updates.

From the post at the ageod forums:

October 26th QF (1.04.3)
1880 campaign had spheres of influence restored
fixed several missing strings
you need Imperialism 4 to DOW
That, for a given resource, all countries selling it, are selected at once in the trade interface is deemed normal. The original design was never to buy to a specific country.

September 30th QF (1.04.2)
1850 GC gets many extra fixes, courtesy of Siegfroh
Added back many missing files (thanks Prussia). Not all as some are not needed. Please report if you believe a file is missing AND necessary.
A ruler can now only declare war if he has an Imperialism of 7. This will severally limit the AI widespread wars. If that's too limiting for players, we can find a better solution for next week.
Improvement in how the diplomacy entries are displayed in the diplo panel.

September 23rd QF (1.04.1)
a) static/garrisons units get back replacements as normal
b) flags fixed on the diplomacy screen
c) you can't interact with nations tagged as 'non formed nations', i.e w/o territories
d) AI should not DOW such nations either (please report with backup folder if you see a DOW)

It might work. I did so in the past by copying the PoN directory under Steam to c:\Pride of Nations, installed the latest version to that, then moved it back under Steam. Of course any update to the Steam version will overwrite what you do.

I think what you should do is drop Pocus a line and ask him what he thinks the best way to proceed might be.

I suspect that it may not be a good idea to mix the executables for the Steam and non-Steam versions.

If you look inside the folder that has the PON executable, the Steam and non-Steam versions seem to have lots of little files that are different, and the difference probably relates to Steam.

But both versions have a VGN folder, and that's the folder with the graphics and data strings.  I'm willing to bet that you could toss the non-Steam VGN folder into the same directory with the Steam VGN folder without causing untoward problems.  Whether you could pass saved games back and forth between doctored Steam and non-Steam versions is another story.

I haven't read through the PON hotfix thread in detail, but I gather that there are a few glitches (old or new) that are going to get cleaned up when Pocus' plate gets a little emptier.

Perhaps it would make sense to schedule this game for January?  That would give everyone time to reaquaint themselves with the rules, and give the patches time to become available to everyone.

The other thing to consider is that we might want to look into all playing the game in Steam, but figuring out what we needed to add to the Steam version (presumably the VGN folder from the latest non-Steam patch).

On another subject, the stripes in the U.S. flag need some TLC.  I'm currently looking at my half finished mod for Civil War II for source material and will come up with a PON mini-mod later today or tomorrow.

My own personal copy uses the Stars and Bars for the Confederate flag rather than the Bloodstained Banner, but this is about the Stars and Stripes.  The stripes in vanilla PON were the result of a sloppy reduction algorithim which blurred everything together.

I've already fixed it on the nineteen on-counter flags, I just have to decide what I want to do about flag that flies over cities, if anything.

I'm probably the last one left who cares, but a new Pride of Nations patch has been released!

Pride of Nations 1.04.5 Changelog

Extra fixes on events chains:
- US Civil war. Is now a normal occuring event from early 1861. Has a 10% per turn, so retains some variability.
- Indian Mutiny. Fixed some conditions on province ownerships and is now working as expected. India will be fully British if the mutiny is crushed.
- Crimean War: simplified and fixed the potential AI/human controlled variables and diplomacy opening moves. We now have a very likely Russo-Turkish war, if France &/or GB are human they get a CB, if AI they get bounced into a war. Italian, Austrian and peace parts are all as before.

- 1880 campaign had spheres of influence restored
- fixed several missing strings
- you need Imperialism 4 to DOW
- That, for a given resource, all countries selling it, are selected at once in the trade interface is deemed normal. The original design was never to buy to a specific country.

I fiddled with it briefly this evening.

I like the new tabs and there does seem to be a bit more info available via tool tips and new info panels.  I did notice that there is one type of Russian cavalry where the unit artwork is a bit screwy.  Only the top half is visible.

Scroll speed for moving the map around seems a lot more sluggish.  Turn processing length is still about the same.  A lot better than it was on first release but still bloody slow.

That is a key question for me, although the glacial speed of my grand Soviet Campaign in Gary Grigsby's War in the East makes PON look positively speedy!

I am facing German turns in GGWITE taking an hour or more. The 4-5 minutes in PON is nothing in comparison. (I have raised the WITE game speed with Slitherine support - and that support ticket is still outstanding after a couple of months - I wonder if 2by3 will ever actually address the issue?)

Curious...what kind of rig are you playing on? My son and I built desktops in the summer of 2015 and so far I have had no delays...but I have not gotten into PoN or a long grand campaign of WITE....and I might not if processing time is really, really bad. I remember waiting 30 minutes a turn for SSI's Gettysburg to process on my Apple IIe. Not doing that again.

@-budd- and Solops

Thanks for your help.

My rig is a pretty average Intel (Core) i3 CPU 530 @ 2.93 GHz (4 CPU's), ~ 2.9GHz

I don't think I am using the beta. I didn't subscribe to betas for it on Steam, but item 5 looks brilliant. My game started getting incrementally longer for the AI to play in the GC, adding roughly a minute a turn, so it wasn't really noticeable to start with. By turn 60 the AI was taking just over an hour to do its turn. I was playing the Russian's and apparently it isn't a problem if you play the German's.

Thanks for that, I'll give it a try. O0

I've started a new Russian campaign. So far so good - run like hell and dig in around Moscow, Leningrad and Kiev... To be honest the first few turns have a lot going on, so it's hard to get a handle on slow AI turns. When things slow down and you get only a few attacks a turn, that will be when I see if this has worked or not. Fingers crossed!
