Ive been interested in this genre lately and it seems as most of the titles are average or worse with only a few titles that stand out unless I am missing something. This EA title Age of Survival is being released on Tuesday and looks interesting with a more realistic setting.

Here are some others.....
Ark Survival Evolved......seems to be the best of the lot, but honestly dinosaurs aren't my favorite setting. I did pick it up on sale however and playing solo or on PVE seems the best bet for a new player.
7 days to die............Got this as well as actually like this better than Ark. Only played a few hours but especially love the crafting/building element more than Ark. The tension in the game and setting I prefer over Ark as well.
Life is Feudal..........The price has always scared me away as well as the supposed complexity, may wait for a sale.
Reign Of Kings.........From what I can surmise, it has potential but be wary of hackers and other online ner-do-wells.
Any others?
Starbound, Terraria and Minecraft spring instantly to mind.
Are you looking for completed games or would you consider games still in development? Rising World shows a lot of promise; it's basically Minecraft but with a much more realistic setting and the terrain/objects aren't block-based. I have it and have enjoyed what I've seen so far. Similarly, Starmade is under heavy development but is equally promising. Starmade is basically Minecraft in space. There's no real game there at the moment (not that that ever stopped Minecraft) but the sheer scale of the universe, along with the massive scope for creating unique ships, is truly impressive.
I'll have a further think.
Unveil (http://store.steampowered.com/app/375210/) is sounding really good, but I admit I haven't tried it.
Unveil does sound ambitious, though I'm not sure I can get past the Nintendofx. I understand them, just aesthetically it's a problem.
Don't Starve (with or without Together) is a nifty survival-horror sandbox, which though graphically as simple as Unveil features more artistic character. Probably Unveil is more what AchLaStand was looking for, though, with no fantasy elements.
Subnautica...Subnautica...Subnautica. Of all the survival/sandbox games I have played it has held my attention for the longest. It is an awesome game and probably the best underwater experience out there.
Other notables I've enjoyed...Interstellar Rift, LEGO Worlds, Empyrion: Galactic Survival, Planet Explorers, Space Engineers/Medieval Engineers, and already mentioned StarMade...
Riiiiiiiiiiiiimworld
NEO Scavenger

I have almost a thousand hours invested in 7 Days to Die, placing it in Skyrim territory, and it's still in Alpha. The game is actively evolving as there is little to do by the time your character reaches 50th level or so, plus there are no NPCs yet, but all this is in the master plan. This is not one of those game companies that sells a bunch of Alphas then disappears. They are very active on their forums, constantly letting their player base know what's coming and quickly patching bugs when they appear.
Besides 7DTD, I'm looking at Subnautica myself. It was already on my radar and I hear rumors that a certain Jarhead recommends it highly :-)
7 Days To Die....you can pretty much tailor the game to your play style, a lot of different settings to adjust. Besides you have the steam refund thing, try it for 1:59 and if you don't like it get a refund.

Ive only played a few hours and died 3 times already, at least to me this seems to be one of the better of the lot so far. I have read they planned on adding skill tree's soon as well as making enhancements to the character creation screen. Cant wait.

In the last 2 months I have refunded..........
Savage lands.
Act of Aggression, which I had over 2 weeks and played around 10 hours and they still refunded it.
Risen 3.
I also received a message which went something like this, "we see you have made quite a few refunds lately, may we suggest doing more research on a title before purchasing it".
I'm not sure how much longer I can ignore 7 Days to Die. Sounds awesome.
I haven't played the new Unity 5 version of it yet, but 7 Days To Die is the way to go for me. O0
7 days to die has been pretty much my passion over the last three months.
I have zombies turned down...they are still there providing tension, and a "reason" to survive, but it gives me time to build, craft and explore. I recommend turning them down, and turning off zombie running while you are learning the game.
The physics are pretty good. While you can build an "impossible" building or two, for the most part, you have to mind gravity, and the strength of construction blocks.
Figuring out a survival strategy, then building off that is 90% of the fun. Also you have to decide your exploration strategy. Do you work from a base? Or dig a hole each night and hope for the best?
You start out with a day of food and water, so shelter is your first priority. Finding and holing up in a house or office building is one strategy. But the world is huge, and sometimes you can't find a suitable one near water, so you have to build your own. For the first 2 or 3 days, the zombies are pretty predictable. But then the fun starts. Hordes gradually get bigger, more dangerous. Remember everything you learned about fortress construction....including where to put the spikes, pits and murder holes.
Another strategy digs down. The game supports tunnels, caves and mine building.
I have one game in day 43. I have built a reinforced concrete shelter, but the zombies still keep me on my toes. I have been concentrating on keeping my shelter up, so have only explored about 1/10th of the map.
The worlds are huge. I always play randomly generated worlds, and I amazed how real they feel. There are a few improbable things the random gen does to build its world, but nothing distracting.
I am far from a twitch-jockey and 7 days to die at its lowest volume is just the right mix for me.
For an alpha, the game is incredibly stable, and bug free. Plenty to do.
I have not played multi-player. I am content to play solo on my local machine. I have heard that other MMO survival games have been ruined by hackers. But eventually I will try my hand at multi-player.
Maybe a Grogheads server?
I strongly recommend looking at a few of the starter videos on YouTube before playing. I almost stopped playing after the first hour, then I saw the video.
I'll try to post some pics later
I turn off running zombies and increase the spawn rate. Not sure i like books to learn stuff before being able to craft. I had a nice under ground lair before the last big update, i won't make a big underground lair until i get an auger. I had a nice little group of buildings where i connected them with elevated platforms from the roofs. I probably won't build anything too fancy now with Alpha 13 right around the corner.

Highly recommend watching an early days survival video. There are plenty of them on youtube.
The one seems to cover the basics https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OcblBRzGRc
but uses the hole shelter.
This one shows how to build that first shelter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7K9-IId2jA
Thanks AT - will watch them while I wait for my lady to go to bed and I can game in peace. >:D
Geek - roger that. Is there potential for some hot man on man co-op action?

Well, initial report is encouraging. It's a very rich, detailed world with shitloads to pick up and craft and whatnot. Find abandoned buildings to take over or build your own. After my first go which lasted all of 20 minutes, I started over with zombies turned off so that I can learn how to play. Having said that, I was very impressed with the zombie mechanics. It's a piece of piss to sneak around a few of them, but when you start making noise - like hacking them to pieces - the horde hears and descends on your location.
See, this is why the "new" style of zombie - those that can move as quickly as people - pisses me off so much. The real horror of zombies comes not from ferocity, but from their danger in numbers. You can deal with one or two easily. But once the horde senses you and surrounds you, you're in serious shit. You always feel like you
should be able to escape easily, but it's always easier said than done.
In fact, I'm going to say that 7 Days to Die is probably the first game that's really made me feel like I'm in Dawn of the Dead or something.
unless you turned it off, the zombie will RUN your ass down at night. just remember there's no hiding from the 7th day hoard they find you no matter how quiet you are, so have an escape plan. the 7th day hoards get progressively bigger.
Heh. I guess I'm in no rush to switch the zombies back on just yet, then!
So I caved and bought into Rimworld. Thanks UCG! :P
Just had my colony wiped out by a herd of deer that got pissed I was hunting them! :2funny:
UCG - how to you interact/talk with the random visitors?
I'm hoping rimworld shows up on gog

No problemo ;D
If you or anyone is interested give me a steam add and we can play a bit if interested. PM for details. Currently im on my third try and settling in for the night in a huge deep hole ive dug, hope ill be safe!. The more I play this game the more I like it. The crafting element of the game is huge, cant wait til they add skill trees for your character.
I think what would be fun is a grogheads team game. Where you have 2 enemy survivor teams and the zombies for ultimate chaos.

Your colony must be on the same planet that Dominions 3 is on.

You can switch zombie running to: "never" That is what I do.
But the zombie dogs that start to show up around day 15 or so, can still run you down. A pack of them is terrifying. Best way I have found to deal with them is iron armor, some ready first aid kits, coffee so you can run far, and a spiked club. They also have trouble with barbed wire fences.
I have 7 Days to Die too and would love to give it a shot in MP, though I have no idea what I'm doing in game. I haven't played it in months though; I figured they'd get it updated to something more engaging sooner or later. No offense to those of you playing it for hundreds of hours to date - it just never sank its claws into me.

Maybe after the next big update (hopefully in a few weeks), I will rent a server for Grogheads invite.
A few pics from my most advanced game of 7 days to die....
Home sweet castle.... Put a reinforced concrete shell around a drug store. Door is elevated, with removable bridge to keep the bad things out...

Damn, AT.
Every building or cluster of buildings I ever found were just a few houses. And I never could keep the hordes out. I could hide on the roof but it got very boring very quickly. I didn't know they added more buildings and/or indications of civilization.
Good work AT! How do you keep the zombies from spawning inside?

The zombies will eventually smash through anything...even reinforced concrete...but it does take them a while.
So standing on the "ramparts", firing down at them is the only thing I have found that consistently works. A good strong wall just slows them down. Once you can make gunpowder, pipe bombs also clear away the clumps of attacking hordes. A field of spikes, easy to make, weakens them before they get to your wall.
Zombies also go after doors. I always have ramp ups to elevated entrances with removable bridges. The zombies (with the exception of the late game "spider"), don't know how to jump across a two cube gap. Of course when they attack...and you start killing them, the gore piles up...and eventually they can climb over the bodies of their fallen comrades...but that is another problem.
Still, I've learned that even the strongest shelter needs a good escape route. Make certain you can get out and run when you have to.... Keep an emergency bottle of coffee around just for this purpose.
I usually play on random generated maps. I don't know if it matters much, but it sounds like the saved game name acts as the random gen seed. So I usually give it a nice long complicated one.
I think there are three cities / towns on each map. But they are far apart, and it can take a long time (many game days) to find them. Following main roads helps.
When exploring, I load up on coffee so I can run along roads forever, and I don't stop for anything... Eventually I bump into former civilization. There are bookstores, drug stores, grocery stores, gun shops, among others...
There is a large dead city...that is probably best left alone early in the game. Very deadly place.

I haven't seen one in my place yet...but I think it is because I have torches lighting the place up. I've read they only spawn in darkness. Also, I have a few locked doors inside...so I will hear if one of them is around. Then I would go after him with a club.
This GH thread got me to do some research and I will be buying this today. It seems pretty hardcore and unforgiving, traits I enjoy. Perhaps that is a personality defect?
