Well our friends from ootp development is going to release version 2 at the end of the month.....the first version was a huge disappointment so hopefully this time around they have better luck.
http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/board/fhm-2-general-discussions/258282-announcing-franchise-hockey-manager-2-available-september-28-2015-a.html
I see they had "completely redone game results" plastered all over the email I got. ;D
I am cautious about this one and not sure I will buy right away but will see how others react and decide from there. Just something about the development team and how they handled the first release really rubbed me the wrong way. They knew it was in bad shape when it came out of beta but released anyway. And the development team traditionally has not communicated well with the community.
All this will be forgotten if they indeed have rewritten a lot of the game and it turns out good, will be hard for me to pass up a good modern hockey franchise type game:)
I'll be holding off as well. The last one was pretty bad and I have Eastside Hockey Manager to tide me over until I hear that this version is a success.
As an example from the head guy at ootp, he posts this when someone mentioned east side hockey and it being cheaper. Although I appreciate his confidence, I think they should dial back its the greatest game until they see how received by the community....or it is going to set high expectations which it may not live up to based on the first release.
From the head guy...
No discussion needed. That 'other game' is not much more than a public beta version of a hobby project from a respectable group of people (I have worked with them, they are great). As soon as it becomes the final product, I'm sure the price will rise to the usual $39.99 for that as well.
Apart from that, I am certain FHM 2 will be the superior product, a brand new developed game and not a resurrected title from almost 10 years ago which got a bit of tuning and a facelift.
OOTP has been $39.99 forever. FHM will, of course, be priced the same because we aim for it to become the undisputed champ of its genre as well. OOTP had competition once, too... anyone remember Baseball Mogul or PureSim?
Alright, having said that, let's focus on FHM 2 here and not some other game...
I am still pissed at their first effort. They made no real effort to patch out the worst of the bugs.
EHM is a better game, by far. I love OOTP, but their hockey sim is very poor.

That's quite a statement given EHM seems to be out and out the better product (given what I read here and there) and what DennisS says - that they never fixed the original one.
I'm not overly impressed with that attitude tbh. That's just about almost made me want to go and get EHM and leave this one. Ballsy - but given their first iteration and the general reception of it, I think misplaced. :idiot2:

Agreed...although I really do expect FHM 2 to be better than version 1, they should let their product stand on their own instead of trying to put down the competition. Not even sure his statements are correct anyway. Eastside did start out by the developer doing it on their own, but he did join SI Games to release the commercial version so I don't think that qualifies as a "hobby project". And until FHM2 is released and people can judge themselves, Eastside is the superior product...but certainly that could always change.
I guess we'll see at the end of the month:) It will be interesting to see how things go after the release and what kind of support we'll actually get. Will bugs be fixed quickly? Will the developers bother communicating with the community? Will the next release actually come out on time? etc.
In the meantime, I'll pick up EHM. I was holding off but I'll wait for this to be fixed/well received and pick it up in a sale later.

Release on Monday...even though I don't want to buy right away, starting to lean towards it:). I am sick

Not exactly but I get the reference ;D
Well, I bought it....impressions later when I have time....really thought I would hold out this time:)
I really hope this edition is good. I never bought the previous one due to all of the issues being reported with gameplay mechanics.

Me too...
Didn't get much time with the game last night so really no big impressions yet. The UI looks good and things seem to be pretty easy to find. Looking at the official forums, haven't really seen any major confirmed issues yet, but it is still early. Seems biggest discussion is on trade AI logic, but that always happens with every sports game. I think people focus too much on the player's names versus the actual player represented in the game...therefore they have different expectations....
Hopefully will get some time later tonight to give it a better test drive.
Still haven't played much, hopefully this weekend, but first patch out already....

Just a few random screenshots from the game....with the fan based mods included, really like the presentation within the game.

That looks awesome.
Interface looks a bit improved, which was definitely needed.
I'm still curious about how improved the outcomes and AI management is.
A game like this takes awhile for me to really assess how all the stuff comes together but I have been monitoring the official forums. I am not as hardcore as many, so I don't always notice all the issues/concerns people bring up. Sometimes I think should just not visit the forums and I would always think it is great:) No doubt there are a number of minor issues that have to be worked out and/or tweaked, they have already released one patch to move in the right direction. From what I can tell it certainly is a much better release than the first one but I am sure it is going to take a number of releases before it becomes completely solid as it can be.
For me, I have noticed more nuisances than really big bugs (i.e. some info missing from screens, missing options, etc.) but your mileage will very depending on your expectations. I think I will certainly get my $29 worth unless some crazy stuff is found....but hopefully the developers have learned their lesson and enhancements will be made throughout the year.
I think today is the last day for the discount if you buy through ootp store...
I didn't ever buy it last year, but I'm in on this one. I'll take a look at it this week.
I think it has promise this year from what I can see, especially if the developers provide routine updates.
I wonder if this is a game for me..... ;D
I don't know much about hockey at all except fighting is allowed to a degree!
I was keeping my eye on the one on Steam (East Side Hockey?) - on the one hand, it's cheaper but on the other I've always been impressed with this company's attention to detail....but then on the other hand, they did screw up with last years iteration....and yet on the other, East Side Hockey seems to get great reviews.
And therefore I never buy one because I can't make my mind up!
Easy problem to solve like me....buy both:)
At the moment, Eastside is probably the more complete/stable game but it is unknown how much the developer will evolve the game over time. Although you can get mods for real players by default it comes with fictional. User interface is a little dated and doesn't fully support all screen resolutions. Although fhm may not match its capabilities right now (still has a lot of good stuff) I believe over the long run like ootp baseball it will become the dominate hockey game.
If I had to buy one with all the factors , I would likely invest in fhm and a year ago I wouldn't have said that.

It's pretty much Football rules (of the Soccer type :P ) on ice, but with the kind of full-on contact that requires pads and helmets. Using sticks, skates, and a puck instead of kicking a ball back & forth. Smaller field (rink, in this case) and goals, faster play.
I've kept my eye on it, but with all the stuff I have now I will wait until a good sale.

I've been waiting for them to fix the bugs and make some UI tweaks before buying BB2.
After the initial bug hunting hurricane has passed (in a couple months?) and I pick it up, we can do some matches. Perhaps get in on whatever Grogheads League is running at the time, or start one. :)

I've just cleaned my hard drive! I'm looking at a lovely, empty desktop. The games I've reinstalled are the ones I think I'd be likely to play - and I haven't touched one since I rebuilt the PC. I've been watching old James Bond films and clueing up on the rules for B-17 Queen of the Skies board game.

I took the tables from QoTS, and determined how many fighters were encountered, on average, in each zone..and then determined how many shots were fired, and the results.
This took several weeks of painstaking analysis and number crunching. The end result was my B-17 would move into an area, and I would roll percentage dice to determine how many damage rolls I would make for that area. Then, one chart was consulted, with another dice set rolled. For this one, it was three ten-sided dice, providing 1000 possible outcomes.
I then created my own scoresheet, with each mission on one sheet, with 24 bombers. I could run a mission with 24 bombers in about two hours..tracking all damage, injuries, and kills.
I believe I was up over 10k missions when the computer age hit... :)
IMO PC NHL 04 modded is tough to beat.
EHM or FHM is intriguing but I still don't see something I need to spend money on given the reviews of the newer games and mods from 04.

Never heard of NHL 2004 being rebuilt by modders....will have to check that out. Likely won't still have the management capabilities as FHM and EHM, but I do enjoy playing a game of hockey now and then. Thanks.
Anyone take the plunge on this one? Any comparisons with EHM?
Yes...still scratching the surface but seems like very good improvement over last years version. They still need to iron out some issues but they seem committed to fixing along the way, already two patch releases. I haven't played ehm recently but I have a feeling fhm has a bigger future than ehm, but may take a couple of versions. No regrets in buying yet.
I'm still (yeah - STILL) interested in a hockey management game and I was looking again over the weekend. So there's FHM and EHM. I like OOTP and their interfaces - so that led me to go looking at their site.
Then I noticed the (imo) bad presentation of the game playing out on the ice...a complete contrast to EHM where you have the FM type display.
So - what to do.... :-[
I think it's got to be EHM until FHM sort the game presentation out a bit. O0

I'm playing the EHM version as we speak, and with the 2015/16 roster update, it's running smooth as silk so far. I just prefer the FM style of interface over the OOTP interface. If OOTP had an FM interface I probably wouldn't need any other sports game.
I'm a bit gutted with the fixed resolution. I know you can have full screen, but it looks god awful.
But for a tenner - it looks like a deep game.
I don't know about players and teams - I know nothing about Hockey - so I wanted to ask if the rosters are already in my game or do I download them from somewhere
If you need the in-game experience of seeing the action unfold on the ice, EHM is your only option for the foreseeable future. I don't believe FHM has any plans to include that type of feature right now. EHM has fake players but you can download a real life roster file by the community. FHM includes both fictional and real players within the game. If you are unsure if you like hockey and want to try something, I suggest trying EHM right now because the cost is very cheap. If you end up liking hockey, then I would suggest getting FHM at some point since I do believe over time it likely will be the better game after a few versions.

It really helps with immersion.
The Roster management UI in EHM is just atrocious, last I checked.
Seemed like I had to dig through multiple layers, or do additional customization & sorting on every table, in order to get all the info that should've been there by default. Was difficult finding the right screens in general.
Takes some getting used to, plus saving custom table info left & right. There is a good sim in there somewhere, but you gotta work to get to it.
Fhm 50% off for those interested.

I saw that and was sorely tempted - but I do not like the "playout" screen...so I held off.
I have Eastside Hockey Manager now and I stopped due to not knowing how to advance without going one day at a time. I just need to look it up. I'm sure (I hope) you can play to day x or something.

I never figured that out either. Not sure you can. ???
The interface in EHM isn't always very intuitive or user friendly in my experience.
Pretty sure you go under your manager's options screen and turn his status to being on vacation. Then you can choose to return from vacation for the next game or a specific date. While your on vacation, you can have your staff perform different jobs for you. Not the most elegant, but workable. From a UI perspective, I think you'll find FHM more to your liking since it does resemble OOTP Baseball to a degree.

Well.. being on 'Vacation' is different than what we had been looking for. In some other GM text sims, you can tell it to progress until something happens that needs your input, and then it will stop. No automated AI doing it for you.
I don't think EHM has this function. Not even sure FM has it. It saves a huge amount of clicking in OOTP though.
^ yes - something similar to OOTP is what I was looking for. O0
Ok - so I bought FHM2 as well.
There are positives and negatives on both sides...so I guess the only way to know is by how much time I invest in each one.
Damn...I went from not knowing if I was interested in Hockey to which one I should buy to bought both! :uglystupid2:

The game comes with the option to play with real player names and real team names, so no mods needed for that. However, if you want logos and such, take a look at this forum....bunch a different stuff like sweaters, logos, etc.

That's very strange...I just uninstalled everything and reinstalled to ensure I didn't have some kind of hidden mod, but still works for me. I go into the new game option and there is an option to use current or opening day rosters....both of them result in having real players and team names for me.
