Title: It's Friday my nutty, groggy pals...
Post by: JudgeDredd on September 18, 2015, 12:45:24 AM
I wanted to start this one because I won't be playing any games.

Why? Well, the time has come for my eldest daughter to leave home. She's going to university. Not a million miles away admittedly - to Sheffield which is about 200 miles away (4 hours) - but there's going to be a huge hole in the house!

I was trying to find a song that would say goodbye to her and all that she brought to our lives, but the songs I was finding were about boys and girls breaking up.

In the end I choose this because she sang in a local church choir every Friday and we used to bang this out together in the car driving home.

Goodbye Megan

Not sure how much gaming time I'm going to have. Been dealing with a cold the last few days. On top of trying to recover I'll need to be getting ready to leave for a week long vacation on Tuesday.

Whatever gaming time I do manage to find will probably be split between CMANO and Crusader Kings 2. I have a CMANO scenario I am trying to finish up before I leave. I really want to be able to play it while I'm on the plane next week. Couple of other scenarios I have some research for that I'd like to finish up as well.

Still playing my Kingdom of Burgundy game in CK2. I have about 100 years left to go. My expansion has really slowed down. I hold all of the Burgundy area of France,, Switzerland, and a couple of provinces in Lombardy. I also have couple of provinces in Austria and Germany where I inherited the vassals of Dukes who had died. The Holy Roman Empire has been converted to a hereditary monarchy so I don't stand a chance at being elected emperor. I have a couple of more de jure provinces in France and Aquitaine I'd like to pick off but for the most part I'm just going to try and hold what I have and continue the conquest of Europe when I convert the save to EUIV.

JD there's an Abba song my ex plays on the first day of term about packing school bags and watching her leave - forget it's name but it's a tear jerker

I feel or you - mines only 8 and taking her to class every morning feels like leaving a little piece of me behind - God knows how horrible this day will be - big man hugs, safe journey and drink like a Scotsman when you get back

I'll be playing arma 3 and mgs 5 and WitP pbems

I can't imagine what it will feel like when my little girl grows up and leaves the nest. It's going to suck, but I suppose I'll try to look at it not as a goodbye, but just a new chapter in our lives. I'm sure you and  Mrs. JD did a good enough job to where she will come back from time to time! Chin-up!

I, on the other hand, am going to switch "gears" this week and play metal gear solid V instead of metal gear solid V. Still loving the game.

Battle of the Bulge and Ortus Regni for sure, and, if it finally got fixed, Armello.

i have 1% under my belt, cleared the first outpost area, then the guard section in the road, and am now tip toeing towards the hillside base with the AAA cannon pointing right at me

i wanted to be all peace loving but cant resist killing the baddies - i cleared the first area, got the intel on where miller was and could have gotten out without anyone knowing i was there, but then went back and killed everyone before the guard changed - currently the river has 8 bodies in it

Yeah - it's a new chapter for us all. We've been subconsciously preparing for it for over a year - but it hit home this morning.

And thank you. I do think we've done a good job. She's a beautiful, young, intelligent and compassionate individual. I think she's well rounded.

Damn - with the "...huge hole in the house" and "...she's well rounded" she'd be pissed at me making people think she's overweight!

This is her on her way to some fancy party - to prove she ain't heavy - she's ma daughter!

JD, my son is two years away from college and my daughter, four years away...it's going to hit us hard here in a few years to lose one and then the other in quick succession. It really sucks to get old.

Especially going to be a pain because my mother in law lives with us...seriously considering an ultimatum if she's still around in four years. It'll either be a retirement home or me taking another path when we hit that fork in the road. I am NOT having an empty nest with her around.

In any case...hey, games, amirite?

I have to get back to both of my AARs (Pool of Radiance and Hapsburg Eclipse)...this week has been insane with work. That's probably it though I've been wanting to get back to both Apotheon and The Fall, both surprisingly fun games.

Still stuck in my World of Tanks frame of mind - I'm going to have a Tier 10 at some point in my life even if it kills me (and honestly, running up the Soviet Heavy lines, I'm only 2-3 Tiers away from topping out in both so I'm not starting at zero thankfully).

Corn liquor will be involved to help ease the pain, though.

How can I concentrate on games when there's only ten years left til both my daugthers go to school? Sunrise, sunset, byotches. And without sounding too crass, JD how can your daughter ever think she's fat??

Anyway, more Dragon Age Inquisition and perhaps some Pillars of Eternity.

I'm at 10% and have at a minimum, 20 hours into it. The game really opens up once you rescue Miller. Keep playing. By the time you unlock missions 7 through 11, there will be so much for you to do and so many weapons, equipment and tools to bring on missions that you really have so many options in how you go about completing your objectives. Once I get a few more unlocks, I'm going to start replaying some of the older missions so I can more easily complete all of the objectives, or try out different strategies I've been wondering about in my head.

@UGC - lol - thanks  O0

Where do you live? Town/city - I'm not being creepy!  :2funny:

By the way, I'm about 5 or 6% in to Metal Gear Solid V and I've got over 30 hours I think.

The reason I didn't fire MGSV up all week was because - it does take me a while to complete a mission. I try to do them all silently so I spend a load of time watching patterns so see where I can catch a guard on his own. So - that's why I haven't played all week

A little bit of both. I try to analyze every enemy soldier to see their skills. I fulton extract the good ones and kill the ones who I have no use for. I always try to infiltrate and take down as many enemy as possible quietly, but as my weapons get more capable, I am getting less afraid to engage in protracted firefights.

I'm a bit amazed at how WoWS has held my attention for more than two months straight.  That says something, I just don't know what (or whether it's about me!).

The fight scenes when they go loud are quite intense. I'm slightly disappointed with the number of hits I can take - but not to distract from the fun when it does go noisy.

Damn Dredd! No wonder you're missing her already. She's gorgeous. You could always go with her. Why not go back to school and learn something new? But probably, she'll be back before you know it maybe with a Grog-Worthy boyfriend. Take it from me, kids are like boomerangs. They come back.

Gaming will be limited for me as this is the Anniversary weekend and so I got to do Anniversary stuff. Fortunately, my wife gets tired of me more quickly than she used to, just like everybody else these days, so I'll do some CM Market-Garden and some Pillars of Eternity when I'm not drooling over Dredd's daughter's pic. Why don't we have a Drooling Emote?

You get them I think after you've finished your first proper mission (after Miller I think)

Also don't waste them trying to pick up mortars or gun emplacements or containers. You need an upgrade to be able to pick up weapons and you need a further upgrade to pick up vehicles and containers.

And every time you use one, it's costs you - hence my tip not to waste them. To be fair to the game, although the Fulton system shows with anything you can pick up, I think there's a red marker which suggests you won't be able to pick that up.

You need an interpreter (which again I think is your first mission) so you can question guards and find out where the goodies are without having to look for them. When the guard tells you, they show on your map.

You'll also want to upgrade your telescope (or bino's) so that you can see a soldiers stats...that way you can be picky about who you pick up and send back to base after stunning and who you can just kill and dump in the river.

Hope that helps.

The cost for extracting a soldier is only $300 GMP, so I'm never too judicious or frugal in their use. There is actually a percentage showing the chance of extraction. Under ideal conditions, it will read 100%. However, if the soldier is wounded, or if there is poor weather, I have seen the chance of success as low as 30%. If you do not have a clear line of sight to the sky, or if the object is too heavy for your level of fulton device, it will read 0% in red.

There you go - 0% if it's too heavy.

I had a wounded soldier die when I used the fulton. I did also send one back who was wounded and he survived.

There's no point in shipping every soldier back from what I gather. I have 30 odd soldiers in the "waiting room" or whatever it's called. I've started only shipping someone back if they have a B rating on something. But yeah - the cost isn't of concern.

Right, that's why I said I scan as many of them as I can, kill the ones who are useless and extract the ones who are talented and possess special skills.

How big is your Mother Base so far? I have two command platforms, two R&D platforms, two Support platforms, an intel platform, a medical platform, a combat unit platform and the platform that serves as a conservatory or zoo for the animals that you extract.  I'm still short of space and need to expand!

Got ya.

I haven't seen how to increase my motherbase yet. I don't know if I'm far enough in or at a required level. I haven't looked much into it tbh. After the first main mission, I've been doing side missions.

Talking of animals, I did put some cages (for catching small mammals) around prior to a mission, did the mission and was notified that I had caught 3 animals...pretty cool feature.

Talking of animals, I did put some cages (for catching small mammals) around prior to a mission, did the mission and was notified that I had caught 3 animals...pretty cool feature.

holy cow! You've played for over 30 hours and haven't gotten to the point where you can start making additions to the base?!?!? Daaaaaaaaaaammmmmmmnnnnn! You need to start playing those story missions, they lead to some of the best unlocks. I do a lot of the side missions too, but I've also done about 10 of the story missions. You won't get D-Dog, Quiet, the Walker and a lot of the other additions unless you play them.

lol

I will do so. I just looked after completing a side mission and there was another...so I did it...then there was another...so I did it...and so on and so on!

32 hours in 1 main mission down (maybe 2 - can't remember) and umpteen side missions

I'm on main missions next week. Just got to get the weekend over with.  :(

I so want Quiet  :-[

+1   College still a long way off for my tykes -- still, can see how that's a bittersweet moment, JD. Treat yourself to a bottle of 12-year Talisker. If she's made it to college, that's a job well done on your and Mrs. JD's part.    O0

In a bit of a gaming funk at the moment. Nothing really holding my attention... May just resort to some Combat Mission, per usual...

w1815 has arrived so will likely play a lot of that.  Games are said to last ca. 15 minutes making lots of plays more likely.

Finish up multiple plays of Modern Land Battles for the review.

PBEM Campaign Waterloo...first day is almost done...couple good scraps already...

PBEM CM:AK...the old girl really does still have legs...wobbly though they may be...

My "Wing Leader" arrives on Saturday (punch in the face for Vance) so more rules to read.

Hotseat Blood Bowl 2 with my son.  So far, I am really, really, enjoying the BETA...and wondering how they'll manage to screw up the final release...

Very solo friendly. Especially to learn the game. There is no hidden info to worry about. All you have to do is play each side as well as you can. The first few scenarios are for learning and feature few desicsions points. This is on purpose. Once you get to the later scenarios, there are 24 in the game and already more free ones released, they are lots of desicsions to make.

Look at SDR and mine AAR in the boardgame section.

I have too, but still haven't brought two or three other air warfare games, created by same guy, to the table yet.  There is a point where I have to stop buying and try to catch up.  :-\

Plus.. if they release Cactus Air Force in the next year, that is definitely going to make the pile larger too.

Aside from the EPIC Waterloo game Jim and I have going, I need to get NBS Marengo on the table. I'm playing through NBS Montebello to get my head around the rules before tacking something larger. Crisis on the Right from White Dog Games also arrived this week and I'd like to give that a try, so probably mostly board gaming this weekend.

Need to persuade Jeep Killer to try some more Scourge of War: Waterloo co-op though, and maybe a game of JTS Panzer Battles to get ready for the release of the new West Front game soon.

Finally broke down and bought Witcher 3 and that's become my "play this when you don't have the mental energy to play anything else." I know it''s somewhat un-Geralt like, but I'm becoming quite good at riding down and cutting up enemies while on horseback.

However just picked up Battle of the Bulge which looks like a very nice boardgamey type game and I'll probably also have a go at How to Survive or The Walking Dead as I've just started watching The Walking Dead (late to the party I know!) or maybe a bit more of CiV, GalCiv III, Thirty Years War or Pike and Shot - indecision is rife  :)

While I've went and re-bought the newer version so I can play the newest and bestest version, I do miss the opening music and videos....if they would only redo Age of Rifles at some point, I would die a happy man.

Heh.  I guess I'm the only one counting down the days until my kids leave home.   :buck2:

Anyway, I already logged a few hours of ARMA 3 on KotH tonight.  Nothing really remarkable, sort of...hard to articulate...the gameplay was kind of stale.  Lacked that sense of urgency that comes from a good fight.  I bailed out finally as I realized I just wasn't having a lot of fun.

After checking in here I think I'm going to fire up Scourge of War and get my Gettysburg on for a while.  Some sandbox Corps v Corps perhaps.

I am also strongly considering firing up either Rome 2 or Combat Mission Black Sea.

I would like to round out the weekend by seeing if Freefalcon will install on Windows 10.  If so I might try to rebuild my old install of that and install some of my old campaigns.  We'll see.

Whelp it was more ARMA 3 KotH so far today.  I'm tiring of the gameplay where the jets are doing whack-a-mole on the helos coming out of spawns.

I'm in a modern shooty-shooty mood so I'm thinking of firing up Operation Flashpoint while I re-download SABOW from Gamersgate.  Not sure if I'm up to the challenge of patching that bad boy up today, though.   ::)

Or maybe I'll work on the ARMA 2 campaigns some more.  Not sure.

i have 1% under my belt, cleared the first outpost area, then the guard section in the road, and am now tip toeing towards the hillside base with the AAA cannon pointing right at me

i wanted to be all peace loving but cant resist killing the baddies - i cleared the first area, got the intel on where miller was and could have gotten out without anyone knowing i was there, but then went back and killed everyone before the guard changed - currently the river has 8 bodies in it

O0

looking forward to it - are you killing and maiming or getting in and out without anyone knowing

I dont waste time analyzing and capturing anymore...I'm well beyond that (which is apparent by the Devil Snake outfit that I am now wearing - perm. blood and the horn is HUGE).

I will conduct my recon, find a weak point and just kill everyone and steal everything I can extract. Its worth the money. OR - my new favorite thing to do in Angola is to drop a tank and roam the lands in the tank. Typically I will drop a tank and complete every available side quest. There is no more need for farming staff. I'm recruiting A+ members now.

Also, a few days ago I unlocked the gunsmith and I can now customize weapons. It will change the way you play the game.

I have a vague plan of playing through the Arkham series a final time (for a while) in one career stretch, and in parallel finally playing the Metal Gear Solid series. (Probably not MG1 and MG2, though, since I'm unsure if I have the proper copy of MGS2 or MGS3 to play them from.)

Concurrent with this plan, I finished Origins last week and its extended DLC epilogue Cold Cold Heart this weekend; then I started Metal Gear Solid [1] yesterday and based on the walkthrough I should be somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 done already. As most people already know, the game itself is notoriously short -- in fact to get certain achievements you have to beat the game under two hours -- but Kojima likes to flesh things out with massive amounts of plotting.

Frankly I'm glad I'm almost half done already, because while I appreciate the history involved, both in-series and in terms of gaming development history (the game ships with a decent summary of the first two Metal Gear games as if written by a talented 10 year old  ::) , so I'm probably not missing any plot that way, and previous plot connections are being referenced in line with the summaries) {inhale}...

...the weaknesses of the game, even at the time, are painfully apparent, and made much worse today by both game design advancements and graphics. Clearly the game was pushing hard on having a constantly rendered 3D gameworld from around the time of Doom or (a little more pertinently comparable) the first Space Hulk, but I can feel it clawing my eyes out. With my mind.

Matters should improve drastically when I get to the first PS2 era game, which I think I've bought a PS3 HD upgrade for. (Otherwise I'll have to break out my archived PS2 system. The PS3 can play PS1 games natively, for some pointless reason, but not PS2 anymore, also for some pointless reason, unless Sony or whoever deigns to convert it, which they rarely do.  :tickedoff: )

Anyway, I'm excited to finally be catching up with all the gamers who have lauded the series, and affectionately made fun of it, to the skies (both in equal measure sometimes). It has been on my to-do list for ages.
