Probably less than it being energy independent.
I think they should have kept the news under wraps. Who knows, the Russians might set up some oil rigs near the Israeli border in Syria and start pumping out the crude. ;)
Israel is so small that I would think this find is both good and bad.

My wife and I went to Israel back in 2009. While there one of our tour group asked our Israeli guide, "If the Jews are God's Chosen People, why did he give them the only piece of land in the Middle East that doesn't have oil"? The guide was clearly ready for this and responded without a stumble, "He gave us the land with all the rocks on it because He knew we would have to fight for it". Now maybe they've got both.

Israel has been developing its natural gas resources for years. the problem is that theyre offshore which explains why theyve been expanding their Navy.

AFAIK, the UN's position on Israel's current borders has not changed since 1967. The occupation is in breach of the Geneva Convention as illegal annexation of land arising from the use of force. I'm sure many Israelis differ in their view, citing the strategic necessity, and the various powers around them that seek their destruction. 2 sides to the coin... :-\
