Title: Falcon collection on GOG
Post by: DoctorQuest on October 23, 2015, 02:28:25 PM
Nice.

The real bonuses here are the inclusion of Falcon 4.0 (which IMHO is still a decent sim even by today's standards) and the Art of the Kill book (in PDF format).

The Falcon Gold package include the Art of the Kill videos as well but I've been having some problems playing the videos properly.

Fantastic news.  Seems to be compatible with BMS, too, so if you choose to pimp out your installation you should be good to go.

I forgot what hoops you needed to jump through to download BMS but, dang, it looks good.

I did manage to get the Falcon Gold video play to work by editing the player.cfg file in the aotk folder like so:

AUDTYPE = 2 ;SOUNDBLASTER
AUDDMA = 1 ;DMA
AUDIRQ = 7 ;IRQ
AUDBSIO = 220 ;BASEIO
VIDTYPE = 0 ;AUTO DETECT
VIDMODE = 110 ;640x480x32K COLORS
DBITDEPTH = 15 ;BIT DEPTH
CDROMDR = D

I also found the entire Art of the Kill video class on youtube. I think this was done off the original VHS tapes. Much better quality.

We've come so far since autoexec.bat and config.sys! :D

Seriously. I remember being willing to kill for 2K in DOS.

I really need to buy a flightstick. I remember playing these Falcon games with just a keyboard, but still, a flightstick is something I've managed to avoid owning for a while now.

A joystick is a must. You don't have to splurge but get a decent one.

Here's a good starter at around 32 bucks: http://www.amazon.com/Extreme-3D-Pro-Joystick-Windows/dp/B00009OY9U

It has a nice wide base (good for stability, not as good if you have only a few inches of open desk space) and a nice st of buttons, as well as throttle and view hat.

If you want to go full HOTAS on a budget you can ger the older Saitek X-45 for about $65: http://www.amazon.com/Saitek-X45-Digital-Throttle-Stick-Windows/dp/B00005TOTG/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1446030275&sr=1-2&keywords=saitek

Wouldn't Bob be holding models of a Spitfire and Bf-109?

You guys...really?

We all know TheBawbStache (forever now one word...we may lose the capitalization in time) is the real weapon.  The heavily-armed jet is only to lure the foe into a false sense of security.
