Great read, Bes, thanks. :o
More Fail Safe than Fail Safe. Great read and thank God somebody in the military used their common sense instead of just following orders.
Wow!! We are all lucky that common sense prevailed.

Well, they were also following orders: the information didn't
entirely match what they had been ordered to check for.
Training and procedure did help to prevent nuclear war, and some such examples were used to help train subsequent operators.
But I know what you mean. :) Considering all the horror stories I've heard over the years, just from the US alone, and then factoring in a number of nations far less stable in such things than the US (plus other stable nuclear powers of course), it's a flat-out miracle we haven't intentionally or accidentally zorched the planet yet.
(One of the chief deacons at my church served in the Air Force as a silo inspector in the mid-south during that time, and he likes to not-tell about near-and-actual disasters. ;) )
