Title: I see a Friday on a one way corridor
Post by: Jarhead0331 on November 20, 2015, 06:08:13 AM

I'm still trying to hold out on Star Wars battlefront. If I succeed, it'll be Fallout 4 and hopefully some BMS 4.33. I really want to learn this sim.

Well it turns out the 1st scenario in the Forged Alliance campaign just keeps getting bigger - there are literally 1000s of units on the screen, im currently in charge of 452, my allies are at least 5 times that and the enemy is massive - at 23:30 last night i thought id have a bash at the next section and then it was 03:12 - man im tired!  :(

i didnt think id like it but the size of the maps and the number of units really makes you feel like youre in a war, not just a border skirmish somewhere - im working on 3 fronts at the moment, and using pause to get from A - B - C. Ive learnt good and bad things, ive learnt to put my air assets on patrol and am in love with my cruisers - SAM launching lovelies they are. Ive also learnt not to surround the enemy commander with 325 of my veteran assault bots, because when she blows up, the screen whites out and shes gone nuclear along with my army!

Great game and will post some screens if i can

where theres time therell be more Sup Com, WitP with KyzBP who has actually made me go bald this week, i half heartedly started a Shogun campaign, i may start that again. God help me but i downloaded Forge of Empires or whatever it is on facebook and im quite digging that so im looking for the nearest PC equivalent which i think is Anno 1404 so maybe some of that

And after a looooong time of getting blown up, shot and exploded in Arma III KOTH im looking for a less hardcore MP FPS, so ill checkout the recommendations of you guys in that thread and maybe get in on some simple minded carnage

a good weekend to you all

Great choice JH. One of my favourite bands.

More Wing Leader with SDR.
More VASSAL work.
Maybe some CiV.  ;)
Might break out Uboat Leader again, it's been awhile and I like the game.

I hope to get some more Fleet Commander Nimitz in for my AAR. Other than that I'm not sure. My co-workers are having a get-together tonight, which should be fun, but tomorrow my wife's dragging me to a wedding of some kids I don't even know, and I know I'm being a jerk but I hate weddings when I don't know the people involved. The woman getting married is the daughter of one of my wife's co-workers. Yaawwn.

...aaaand I just referred to a couple of 20-somethings as 'kids.' I'm old now.  :-\

Good tune, JH!  To noone's surprise, it will be Civ IV BtS mp.  I also installed Rome Total War the other night and am considering a go at that.  It will be my first time.

More Conquest of Elysium 4. I might also try Hard West. I love both westerns and XCom and have high hopes for it. And even though it's in beta I might look at Political Machine 2016 which was recently added to Steam.

Look at Jarhead comin' through with the Dire Straits!  Nice!

@JH, from what I've seen of your gaming habits here I don't think you'll enjoy Battlefront.  I found the beta to be insanely shallow.  While the pew-pew with stormtroopers and such was cool for a while, after about 2 hours I'd had enough.  I mean, it was free to play for an entire long weekend and I bailed after 2 hours...on a free game.  So take that for what it's worth.  Maybe try a few Youtube videos if you're about to press purchase.  This all assumes you didn't play much of the beta; if you did then I guess you know more than me whether it's your type of game or not.

I'm sticking with war-type games: BMS Falcon, maybe some IL-2 if I can get the C.U.P. mod installed, and ARMA 3.  I've been trying out some mods for ARMA 3.  One is a persistent Vietnam co-op mod.  I played some the other day and sort of enjoyed it; I think it might be more fun on Teamspeak.  I think the mod is called Air Cav Vietnam or something to that effect.

That should be enough to get me started.

When I can I plan to try to get some HoI3, vicky2 and maybe ck2 in.
If I really get a burr up my arse considering it's supposed to not get out of the 40's here Sunday I may try to sit down and learn the beast that is WitP:AE

Mordheim went into full release yesterday, which considering how many bugs they were still stomping I'm not so sure is great; but I'm reacquainting myself with the system and looking forward to setting up a campaign with the Sisters of Sigmar. Edited to add: Lord, has it been a year already since Early Access???

With Decisive Campaigns: Barbarossa (hey, shouldn't that also have been a Case/Fall? Didn't the Germans have a color for it?) on the way next week-ish, I'm studying the rulebook for Fall Blau to better familiarize myself with the system before several things get changed for Barbie. ;)

I feel like I've been negligent in trying out Combat Mission 3.0 on my Surface (with Fortress Italy installed as a sacrifice in case things don't work out so well), to see how feasibly it works here (I'm on it right now). I'd love to get into some multiplayer and show that off to the nieces and the Bro (and get some Bro mp going since he may recall how the game is played and used to do this sort of thing a lot back before wife and kids ;) ), but the most likely way to accomplish 2/3 of that goal will be to use the portable Surface Windows pad. Something to do this weekend maybe...

Always some probability of edging a little farther on my Far Cry 4 game. I'm far enough along in the main plot that the next mission will lock in my chief ally for the rest of the game (and three out of four bosses down, though I haven't nixed Yumi's fortress yet). Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of either of my two allies and their plans for the future of the country, which is entirely intended by the story designers, but which leaves me with some story paralysis; so I've been buzzing around picking up any remaining letters, masks, and journal entries in my currently occupied areas.

I have in-laws coming for the week and a bunch of work to do over the next couple of weeks.  However I will make time to continue my first Conquest of Elesyium 4 compaign.  I always go random during game setup and ended up with the Demonologist faction.  Should be interesting.  I'll also be trying out a mono blue Commander deck build this evening at FNM.

I'm going to give Pride of Nations another try, even though it requires a super computer to run properly. I would have probably considered this game a classic if it wasn't such a damned hog. You have a game that has a 70+ year time span with 15 day turns. At that scale, turns must process quickly.

I will attempt to restrain myself from buying Fallout 4 at regular price, but it will be hard.

I think its a great game. My only complaint is that the AI just runs amok with Great Britain and France. The logistics model simply allows too much crazy stuff to happen, like GB invading China through India.

Conquest of Elysium 4.  Just got in from work and it shall be downloaded in a minute.  Can't wait!
Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor.  I can't put this down, it's a bloody fantastic game, even playing with mouse and keyboard.
Spec Ops: The Line.  Provided I get around to it after the former two.
Shroud of the Avatar.  When I'm really drunk I like to load this up and piss off as many of the other players as I can.

Buy it. Don't resist. Just buy it.

It's funny -- I've had the opposite experience with Fallout 4 than I had with MGS V. I was completely blown away by MGS V for the first half, but the more I played, the more tedious it started to get, and the more its limitations started to show. I abandoned it about halfway through the Congo missions, and haven't felt any motivation to go back.

With Fallout 4, my initial reaction was, "OK, looks good -- not extraordinary, but definitely good." But the more time I've put in, the more obsessed I've gotten. FO4 grows on you slowly, but once it hooks you, man, it will not let go. The scope of the game is absolutely huge. The main quest becomes more interesting as you go, but the side quests are where the real fun is. And the artistic design -- the landscape, the places in it, the buildings, the vehicles, you name it -- is astonishing.

So yeah, buy Fallout 4   8)

My gaming will be spotty this weekend as I'll be assisting the follow-up needs of my first grandson born on Wednesday and home now. You know, guy things like go get diapers, lotion, and beer. Got about an hour and a half on the Vietnam Cav server for ARMA 3.  At one point when we were in a Huey transiting between LZ's this guy was playing some 60's music- CCR and such, and it was pretty damn immersive.

That last shot was tough.  I was a bit forward of the rest of the guys and I could see all these VC on the map and I could hear them talking in Vietnamese, but I couldn't see a thing.  I could hear them getting closer and closer and I'm scanning frantically, but I'm in this thicket and can barely see a thing.  Sadly, it didn't end well for ole Toonces.

It uses Air Cav Vietnam:  http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=550873311

and NAM terrain:  http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=501689302

Then look for the 7th Cav server; usually if you sort by number of players it's towards the bottom of the first page.

Note: you can ONLY have those two mods enabled (and you have to have both mods enabled) or you won't connect to the server.

It's fun for a bit- a change of pace from KotH.  I'd like it even more if it had player-controlled OPFOR, but then it would end up being like KotH...

If there's no Wedding Reception food/alcohol involved, then yes, a waste. Tell your wife the bride isn't half as beautiful as she was on your wedding day and maybe you'll at least get lucky afterward. Or else she'll accuse you of just lusting after one of the bridesmaids and you'll get the sofa tonight. It's called the Husband Gamble.

On a game-related note, I picked up Verdun, so add that to my queue for tonight.  Some scotch and Verdun sounds like some good times...   :buck2:

Apparently there is alcohol, but it's overrated two nights in a row. I had beer, wine, and even a couple of glasses of a really nice Scotch last night and still have a slight headache. Unless someone breaks out a copy of Tide of Iron or something - highly doubtful - this is going to be a very boring Saturday night.

@ Gus- no single player in Verdun.  But squad teamwork seems to be key.  Frankly I had no idea what the hell I was doing...I think I called mortar fire on one of my own trenches at one point!  But if we can get 4 like-minded Grogs in a team we should have a much easier time of things.

*cries in corner*

And as the ERE too?? That's the 2nd toughest faction to play as!!

Dammit. Riddle me this...is the key to winning mere survival as the basic objectives appear to be? Or is there something more? Either way I have never survived long enough to win.

I suspect the thing that will help you most is to take an hour to watch some YouTube multiplayer battles. The key to surviving is properly using your units, especially your cavalry. Get some decent cavalry and use them for quick flanking charges and try any not to leave them in there too long getting chewed up. There was an awesome YouTuber I used to watch, though I will need to look up his name (HeirofCarthage). That guy hands you the secret key you are looking for.

I'm doing my best to survive this wedding. Two wines, one jack and coke, and everything is better.

Dude! We want pix of the bridesmaids' décolletage, not plastic glasses half-full of mass-market vin-blanc!

Ok, so I got a few hours of Verdun in and it is pretty doggone fun.  It took me a while to figure it out, but once I did it's actually not hard at all.  It's almost exactly the same formula as Red Orchestra 2/Rising Storm, so if you're familiar with those you'll get this almost immediately.  Of note, it plays a lot like the RO2 campaign maps, where you'd capture territory and then move to a new map based on the territory you captured.  If you capture a point then the other team gets a chance to counter-attack and you have to hold it for a specified time in order to advance to the next objective.

Lots of trenches and crater holes...very reminiscent of some of the RO2 maps.

The Gas mechanic is neat.  If they mortar you with poison gas you have to put on a gas mask, which is pretty stifling.

I had some sort of horrible bug when I first booted it up with all sorts of looping background noise and I was about 2 seconds from requesting a refund.  Since I rebooted the game, though, it has worked very well and sounds much, much better.  In my opinion it's worth the $10 if you're into RO2 type games.  No singleplayer that I can see, but for basic multiplayer shooty-shooty it's pretty fun.  It just took me a bit to get my bearings.

Jack always helps at weddings. And almost everything else too. Especially making the girls prettier at closing time. I got in a little DC Case Blue today and at the start of turn 9 I've upped my score of casualities against the Russians to 250,000 to 20,000 of mine. Not too shabby for an old Jack-Drinker.

Mission 1 of the campaign is over in Forged Alliance - 3 hours gameplay - built 3400 units, destroyed 8000 - epic battle

Toonces - IronX and I are planning to play together later this week, around 930pm EST. Are you available maybe Wed. or Fri. night?

Swatter - believe it or not I was pretty efficient at Attila TW tactical battles. I won the majority of them that I chose to play out. But in the campaign map I had almost every known faction at war with me, and this was with the Radious mod - which is supposed to tamper down that sort of thing.

Try the Sassanids Gus. If you can't win as them then turn in your TW license.

The reason the whole world would be at war with you in Attila was due to Research causing negative Diplo rep across the board.  Which makes no fookeen sense at all.

After discovering that, for the first time in a TW game, Researching stuff would increasingly make everyone hate you, I rage quit and never went back.  If it were a bug, then I would've returned, but the devs stated it was intentional to help "balance" the regular factions with the hordes.

It was obviously a stupid lazy last minute measure, instead of properly implementing Hordes into the TW system's Diplo & Tech mechanics in a better way.  The result of getting it out by a deadline and having to quarter-ass that bit, I'm sure, but it disgusted me anyway.

That's why I installed Radious, but it didn't seem to help.

Gus, have you tried the Belisaurius DLC? I thought it was pretty easy as Belisaurius  until I got to Italy and faced the Goths and then it got hard in a hurry. Damn, who pissed them off?

Gus-
I have to head to The Garden State for Thanksgiving Wed-Fri.  If not this weekend maybe next week...

Slash - yeah I tried the Belisarius DLC and played as the Romans and won. It felt very easy for me too. I had a ton of armies by the time I got to fight the Goths so it didn't become an issue.

Toonces - ok I will keep an eye out for you over this coming Saturday and Sunday just in case. IronX and I are going to try to meet up. I hope we can all get something going in Verdun - I've been waiting for something like this forever.

Can you recommend some good (=concise) video tutorials that would be useful for learning to play Verdun?

The spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

No.  Not likely to either.  Subject matter and game play not my cup of tea.

^Well good evening, then.

Philippe - IronX may be able to point you in the right direction for Verdun videos - I have only fired up the game once or twice and it was months ago before other guys here got into it.
