I'm playing OOTP13 and I want to continue play until my next game, but it won't let me saying "The NYY have a player on the DL who has to be activated"
So I click OK, and then right click on the player in the DL - now - I was told in a previous day to this that I had a player on the DL, so I moved him to the 40 Man Roster (active roster was full).
So the guy is on the 40 man roster - so why is he STILL showing on the DL - and what do I have to do to get rid of the original message about activating him? If I select "Designate player for assignment", I'm told he has to be put on Waivers first. So if I then select "Waive and Designate player for assignment", I'm asked if I'm sure I want to waive and designate him for assignment - because if I do he will be placed on the irrevocable waivers with an exlamation mark...making it sound like I SHOULDN'T to do this...even though it seems like the only thing I can do.
Can someone explain to me how thw DL works and, more to the point, how you get a playe off it and onto your assignment again (be it active roster, 40 man roster or a minor league?
Do I HAVE to waive the player? What is waiving the player? Is it where the player is vulnerable to being pinched by another team?
Placing a player on the Disabled List allows you to move a man from the Minors up to the Majors to take his place. The DL effectively takes him off the active roster, but not the 40 man roster. So, when he comes off the DL, you have to send someone down to the minors by designating someone for assignment. If they have any designations to the Minors, the player you send has to go. If he is out of designations (three times I think is the max), then he has to be placed on irrevocable waivers. If noone claims him, he becomes a free agent.
So, if at all possible, choose one of your players with designations to the Minors still available and send him. Then take your man off the DL.

1. I don't know who I brought up from the minors (wasn't even sure I had done that) when this guy went on the DL
2. Can I not just put this guy down in the minors? Was this guy definitely from my active roster and therefore someone from the minors "took his place" when he was injured?
3. Doesn't putting a player on the minors piss them off?
Is the DL just for players from my active roster who are injured? Because it sounds like (from what you are saying) that this guy needs to go on the active roster...

I've just had a message about a 4.5 star SP from my team who has been "clqaimed" by 2 teams....how the hell did that happen?

Most major league players will have a contract that is major league only. So to send them down, you have to put them on waivers first...and that means every other team gets a shot at grabbing him (thought that can be a good way to dump a vet if you have a young guy at the same position who's ready).
I don't recall putting this guy on waivers though....would the game have done something lke that on it's own for some reason?

My knowledge of what your asking is built more from a lifetime of following baseball and the ins and outs are not always clear to me. The major league roster is a 25 man affair. There is also a 40 man roster comprising the 25 major leaguers and 15 more players that, to my understanding of it, are not in the majors, but are treated as if they are in the majors for many procedural purposes. Like a player claimed in the Rule 5 draft MUST remain on the winning claimant's 40 man roster for the entire year. Unfortunately, I don't know enough about it, the 40 man roster, beyond what I explained earlier.
The 40 man roster also comes in for September call ups. Those are the extra guys who will be added to your active major league roster in September when the rosters expand.
As for the Rule 5 draft, not a clue. I have no idea how the Hell that works. ;D

Did you leave the AI to take care of the problem? If so, it probably randomly picked someone to waive so that it could clear a spot for the guy coming off the DL.
^Good guess on the Waiver problem, AB. I only brought up Rule 5 because I knew the 40 man roster exception. A lot of baseballs procedural rules are beyond me.

Same with me. I actually like baseball management sims, though I haven't picked one up in a couple of years, but I have to turn some of the stuff like Rule 5 off.
Very probably I have left that kind of stuff to the AI...but no wonder he was snapped up...he's a 4.5 star SP!! WTH is the AI putting one of my 4.5 star SPs on waiver for? I had 4 other crap SPs!!

Yeah, unfortunately the AI always seems to conveniently choose to screw you over by taking one of your best players in these games.
So mental note to self....make way in the roster BEFORE bringing a player off DL??

It does seem odd that it would waive an ace pitcher in a case like that.
I'm struggling to think of a situation where I would have put that pitsher on the waivers.
Is it possible he was injured, went on DL, came off DL and I did nothing - so he automatically went on waivers?
I mean, I know so little about this very deep game (and the game and rules of baseball in rl) - so I'm wondering if I did something that would mean this player sat on the waivers list

youre playing the deepest baseball management sim known to man, but dont know the rules - what satisfaction do you get from the game? like i said, i dont want anyone to get defensive im not having a go at the game or the sport - im just wondering.
i know nothing of the sport, but recently watched 'moneyball (sp?)' and loved it, especially the actual story of the maths involved, as opposed to the players - great concept
I actually get a load of enjoyment from it UCG. Though I do find not knowing the rules both prohibitive and sometimes annoying. But I have the knowledge that there are hardcore baseball gamers who understand and follow the actual game but don't get alot of the rules behind the game itself...and that comforts me.
I hadn't played in a while and I had read about DL before - but just forgot - such is my memory.
Things like the draft coming up - I have no idea what's involved, but I intend to read up on the draft before it hits.
I guess it's not too different to be commander of the Pacific Fleet and it's forces...not knowing everything you need to know but "muddling" through...some of the enjoyment is muddling through.
I can't really put it into words...there's enjoyment there...but so little of the game is hands on for me, I kind of see your point...all I know is I enjoy watching the scores come in as I watch baseball on ESPN America. I know the rules of "the game" - as in how it's played, strikes, walks, hits, RBI's...but there's still lots of the stats info I don't really get. But it's a learning process by playing. for example next time I have to take someone off the DL, I know to move someone off the Active Roster :)
I enjoy the game and I enjoy learning it. My knowledge of baseball whilst very little just now is 100 times better than it was a year ago. I watch it on the TV and I play this. When I'm stuck or I have something specific (like the drafts) coming up, I go looking on wiki and the game help files.
I do believe what happened was a bug and not something I was unaware I did - I do not recall putting that pitcher on waiver...so I do believe the AI did it. Though had I a better understanding of what was going on, I could've prevented it by creating space. Like I said - I won't be doing that again.
I've actually become a huge fan of Baseball and look forward to the matches on ESPN...which, by the way, go on for 2 or 3 hours.

many moons ago i want to see a Yankees match whilst visiting NY as part of the honeymoon - we sat, we watched, we let after 2 hours, shopped, walked, ate in little italy, went to the top of the empire State building and decided to walk back to the hotel, stopped in a bar on way back for a drink - match still on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A lot of people would argue that many major league general managers have less of an idea of how baseball works than you do, JD... ;D
It's my understanding that while a player is on the 60 day disabled list, he's not counted against the 40 man roster limit. That may have been a factor when you tried to bring that particular player back from the DL.
