Title: Return Of Reckoning - The Warhammer Online Server
Post by: Nefaro on December 08, 2015, 10:40:22 AM
Wanted to continue any discussion on this (currently Alpha) WHO revival here so the Total War thread doesn't get OT.

The devs running this are obviously pretty dedicated.  There has also been hundreds of players on every time I've checked; the early tiers are well stocked AFAICT.   O0

There is still a lot of little stuff (and PQs) not fully working, and the UI responsiveness can be a bit twitchy at times, but I have high hopes they will iron it all out.

I've been getting slowly reacquainted.

Did some scenario queues a day or two ago.  Worked just fine, like they used to AFAICT.

Open RvR zones seem to be a bit dominated by Order, and the population is a tad in their favor, so I've been starting up some Chaos characters.

Healsputin - the Chaos Zealot (because Zealots have crazy-wonderful Rasputin beards).
Stinkypinky - the goblin Squig Herder.

;D

Only after firing it back up did I realize which were some of my favorite classes... those two at or near the top.

Two reminders for setup:

1) Make sure you download the RoR Launcher executable, put it in the main file location, and start with it.

2) You may have to select all the Warhammer files (Ctrl+A), hit Properties, and uncheck the "Read Only" box, then apply to all.  For some reason the client files were all set to Read Only after I downloaded them.  Game won't run properly unless that's turned off.

Other than that, you're directly in.  Create 20 characters max.

I remember why WAR's population was so erratic.  Other more modern MMOs began coming out, and other existing ones quickly adopted WAR's new innovative features.

The final nail was probably when Rift was released.  That game took many of it's prime features, along with those of other MMOs, and mashed them into a more user-friendly experience, with generally better PvE.

WAR also took a long time to adopt some sort of passable Free Trial offer in a time when Free-To-Play MMOs were becoming the norm.  Being able to only play Tier 1, and then having to cough up a sub to continue, drove some of their potential customers away.

I even recall speaking to numerous new players, after the free Tier 1 thing was implemented.  They all expressed their great enjoyment of open RvR, at least during peak hours when it was constantly to be had, but they had been too spoiled on actual Free-ToPs by that point and complained of the 30-day subscription wall (and some of the lackluster PvE may have supported that too).

Ultimately, it had too much competition running their stuff better.  Being owned by EA, I think many people ultimately expected WAR to get it's plug pulled sooner rather than later too.

...

It wasn't the greatest MMO of all time, but I definitely enjoyed the PvP.  I think the Warhammer theme really helped it's atmosphere for me, too.

Finally back up and running, few bugs here and there but I am happy so far.

I can't get the hang of downloading it with the direct links.
Either I get a max connection error, or when I do get to download it aborts itself in the middle.

The text on the download page says the direct download links have connection limits.

D/L via the torrent.  Much less painful.

my recollection was that everyone was doing the pvp instances and not doing it in the open world. also destruction had the majority of players. i did enjoy my bright wizard though. think i left before they were nerfed.

I'm not much into torrenting.

Seems like Vuze (according to Wikipedia) contains adware.
I also checked another client recommended by a friend (uTorrent) and it too was adware-infested.

You just have to be very careful when you're installing uTorrent.  There are several check boxes you have to uncheck during installation.  Do that and you're good to go.  I've used it a few times and haven't noticed any adware on my computer.

This.

Just uncheck the extra boxes in uTorrent installer.

I just assumed that everyone was vigilant regarding installer checkboxes in all Freeware programs.  You should be!  :P

Fun playing it.
Too bad some stuff is broken though (public quests for an example).

Yeah, I'm sad the PQs aren't functioning yet.  They're supposedly working on it.

I've had a rough time trying to time the ability chains due to what is obviously excessive latency to the servers on the other side of the planet.

Wouldn't be so bad if the game supported a long time ability queue time period, but WAR specifically didn't so that you were forced to get into the rhythm of the global cooldown timer for best efficiency.  The extra latency to the RoR server has been making it much more difficult.

Won't stop me from playing!
