Title: JD, JH.. experts in DRM headaches
Post by: Tuna on December 12, 2015, 03:06:58 PM
Just ordered myself a new Motherboard.. Wondering what other games besides DCS and Battlefront I'll need to look to unregister. Of the wargames that we play, are those the only ones that will give me trouble (just thinking they were the ones that burped with new Vid Card or CPU).

I know I'll have to do some research in the FSX world, as I'm sure a few of them have complicated activation, like Flight1.

Just trying to prepare myself for the headaches ahead!

Yeah...for me the DCS series and Battlefront are the primary headaches. Whenever I can, I buy games on steam, so my library is overwhelmingly easy to transfer from system to system.

Post here if you come across anything unexpected as you go.

I think most of the ones with Online Activation are tied to your hardware.

Some of them may not flip out if it's a single change or addition but I wouldn't count on that being the case every time.

Where it's going to be different Motherboard and Memory.. I will assume what will flip, will flip.

Does one of those two allow you to deactivate and the other doesn't? I know Battlefront has great Customer Service (from doing it in the past).. but DCS not so good.

Man - I'm so sorry but I seriously have no idea.

As JH said - Combat Mission and DCS are both always the sole headache causers. Not all the time, but if anything is going to screw up during a clean install or new hardware or "whatever", then it'll be one of them.

This happens more often than it should - it should be a lot easier. I know for both DCS and CM you don't have to de-activate in order to reinstall (on a different disk for example) but I cannot say for certain that that's the case with all modules. I also can't say for certain whether uninstalling DCS World will "deactivate" your modules.

I will point out though that I have since found out that the Mig-21BIS activation issue I was getting was not (as it was telling me) due to a "significant" hardware change (I did find that odd as it was only a disk)...but a screw up with Leatherneck's activation and running the Mig on both 1.2 and 1.5BETA/2.0ALPHA.

I wish you luck my friend. I will try and pull things from the darkest depths of my memory should you post with any issues...it could be that it all goes smooth because one thing I've noticed is the issues are NOT consistent - otherwise I'd learn!

So good luck.

Isn't it funny how so many people not that many years ago were banging on about Steam being DRM and poison and malware - and it's the simplest solution for your gaming, regardless of what it is you are doing!

It gets screwed up when there's third party DRM on top of Steam - but those aren't that common now.
