In case you missed the news, Saudi Arabia executed a bunch of Shiites.
Iran has responded with some seriously inflamed rhetoric.
Apparently there were some riots in Iran targeting the Saudi embassy.
Now Saudi Arabia has cut diplomatic ties.
QuoteSaudi Arabia severed relations with Iran on Sunday amid the furor that erupted over the execution by the Saudi authorities of a prominent Shiite cleric.
Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubair told reporters in Riyadh that the Iranian ambassador to Saudi Arabia had been given 48 hours to leave the country, citing concerns that Tehran's Shiite government was undermining the security of the Sunni kingdom.
Saudi Arabian diplomats had already departed Iran after angry mobs trashed and burned the Saudi embassy in Tehran overnight Saturday, in response to the execution of Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr earlier in the day.

Hmmm.
These stories are not high profile. I find myself stumbling across them in odd places. They do not bode well but I am awaiting some analysis to shed light on more context.
QuoteBahrain and Sudan have completely severed diplomatic relations with Iran, while the UAE has reduced its diplomatic representation. Today's announcement comes just one day after Saudi Arabia severed ties with Iran. The Saudi-Iranian conflict has been ongoing throughout the weekend, beginning with the Saturday execution of prominent Shia Muslim cleric Nimr al-Nimr. In response, Iranian rioters stormed the Saudi embassy in the Iranian capital of Tehran, setting it on fire with molotov cocktails. Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir then announced Sunday that Saudi Arabia would be cutting all diplomatic relations with Iran.
"In response to the barbaric attacks on the Saudi Arabian embassy in Tehran and its consulate in Mashhad... Sudan announces the immediate severing of ties with the Islamic Republic of Iran," said the Sudanese Foreign Ministry Monday.
"This exceptional step has been taken in the light of Iran's continuous interference in the internal affairs of Gulf and Arab states, which has reached unprecedented levels," added the UAE Foreign Ministry in a statement.

In modern states that would be a prelude to war, but I'm kind of dubious either nation will go that far.
Yeah, I read about this earlier today (well, yesterday now). I'm just glad I'm not Iraq; that's not a comfortable spot for them to be in, and I don't just mean in a geographical sense.

Deathstar in action?
Big news here in Asian media.
What's their take on it?
Interesting developments. Russia is really close with Iran and the US I guess is friends with Saudi Arabia. Oh man this doesn't sound good.

Obama has carefully cultivated a foreign policy which alienated both Israel and Saudi Arabia - two of America's closest allies in the middle east.
The rift can be repaired, but the fact that a US president could be elected to eight years in office while deliberately scorning our traditional allies (and national interests) must be quite sobering to every nation on the planet. The lesson will not soon be forgotten.
