So, I've been thinking about getting into Savage Worlds and see that DriveThruRPG has the Savage Worlds Deluxe rules on sale (the PDF) for $9.99. With that price I'll have a few extra $$ to spend and was wondering if anyone runs Weird Wars Rome stuff and how it is since that is the sourceboook I am leaning towards grabbing. I'm tired of high fantasy stuff, and not really into western games (so not looking at the DeadLands sourcebooks).
Any recommendations, one way or the other?
I love the core Savage Worlds system, but I don't know anything about that specific setting
One thing I'm thinking I will like about SW is it reminds me a lot like GURPS but a whole lot simpler. Taking all day to work up a PC just doesn't cut it anymore and I'm not getting any younger.
I'm not familiar with the Weird Wars stuff, and the Rome one looks rather thin judging by the number of pages listed for that specific one.
As for Savage Worlds, it looks to be a fun & engaging system without getting bogged down in too many little details & rules exceptions. Even if you intend to avoid straight Fantasy & the Deadlands setting there are still plenty other settings available for it.
I couldn't imagine purchasing a PDF for an RPG. Just seems like a pain to flip through on a tablet or computer, compared to having a full size physical copy.
Especially the Savage Worlds core book, which is only around $9 at Amazon:

Can also find some of the setting manuals there, too, for relatively little money.
Concerning GURPS, have you ever used GURPS Character Sheet (http://gurpscharactersheet.com/)? I've used it to set up Prime Directive templates. Once you have created the templates you can create PCs quickly.
Now I must go investigate this Savage Worlds rule system you guys are talking about. ^-^
And it looks like if you buy it from Pinnacle directly (https://www.peginc.com/store/savage-worlds-deluxe-explorers-edition/) you get the PDF free with the softcopy version.

First I have seen of that character sheet tool but I do have the GURPS Character Assistant and its really helpful.

I went ahead and got the Weird Wars Rome supplement and honestly it looks like its more for mass battles with some minimal RPG favor thrown in where the PC's are part of a Legion. The background and extra flavoring PC's will be helpful though, the extra edges, hindrances and weapons stuff. I've only just perused the book so far and I'll have to read it completely through to get a better idea of whats in it. Probably need to learn more about the SW system too before I can accurately comment.

My main reason to pick up Savage Worlds was due to my interest in
Deadlands Reloaded. But I've also since picked up Deadlands: Hell On Earth, and Broken Earth for post-apoc SW settings.
I've also noticed some other settings that sound pretty good, although some of them don't seem as full of background fluff as I tend to prefer.
There are still a few non-fantasy SW settings I'd like to check out:
Interface Zero 2.0 (http://www.amazon.com/Interface-Zero-Savage-Worlds-GGPIZ201/dp/0996071407/ref=pd_sim_14_3?ie=UTF8&dpID=51xhyNFlkNL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR113%2C160_&refRID=1J06D3P1ZYGKZTTV804N) looks to have left a good impression on reviewers, although I already own plenty of cyberpunk RPG in the latest Shadowrun edition.
Another I've wishlisted is Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/0982642768/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=1IL8DM1VL62YE&coliid=I20D26B6AIYCQP) which is some modern supernatural/monster-hunter setting adapted to the Savage Worlds system from it's own original one. Pretty inexpensive too.
And Necropolis 2350 (http://www.amazon.com/Necropolis-2350-Savage-Worlds-S2P30000/dp/0981528171/ref=pd_sim_14_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=51KfUXhP2WL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR119%2C160_&refRID=0HGQ563RX0DXMTE4XSAC). Although I already have a superb dark sci-fi/horror in the new
Mutant Chronicles 3rd Edition.
Of course, there are all kinds of other settings running the gamut.
It's always tempting to get a similarly themed setting for Savage Worlds just because the SW system tends to favor quick action-packed sessions. More pew-pew-lazagun without excessive book-keeping? Partly because the rules emphasize a more miniatures-skirmish style, which has positives and negatives.
Hauling this corpse back up to the surface to drop alert that Pinnacle's Weird War One stuff is up and for sale (only the Player's and GM's books) at DriveThru.
Loving the subjects (Savage World and WW1), it was a no-think buy for me and so far, it looks pretty nice; a reasonably concise work-up of the Entente and Central Powers, the areas of conflict and so on without bogging down in the weeds.
While I enjoy my pathfinder PDFs, I know they have limited table value for me. I want the actual books at the table and not an electronic device. I will caveat by saying this is particularly true with core rule books and not necessarily with fluff reference material. In which case, it's better be something critical to a campaign in order for me to want an electronic device at the table. I might be becoming an old curmudgeon.
My long-term plan is to get all of those books loaded onto my Kindle so that I have one small pocket device with all of my role-playing tools on board. I can even roll dice on it , so just the one small tablet and I can gain anywhere
Digital dice? I'm pretty sure that might be a RPG heresy.

maybe - and I carry around my dice bag in my everyday bag already. but when traveling, it's handy to have it all on a screen
What about character sheets?
