It has been pointed out to me that I have led a sheltered movie viewing existence. Many is the movie that is considered popular/must watch/seminal (I said seminal) that I have not watched. In an attempt to rectify that, I am putting up this thread (which I seem to remember that I've done before, but, I'm too lazy to look for it now). Below are some of the movies I have not seen. Please help me by adding some more so I will know what to watch if I ever turn my tv back on again. Thank you in advance for your help.

You could always help by suggesting more stuff I'm sure I've never seen. Like, any of Jim Carrey's movies. Although, there are certain lines I will not cross and Jim Carrey movies are one of them.

Thanks for the suggestions, gents! Big Trouble,... is a favorite from long ago. Should fire that bad boy up again soon. Escape From New York I just rewatched a few years ago. I saw one or two of the Evil Dead line of films, not sure if Army of Darkness was one of them. The rest, I have not seen. I'll add them to the list.

This is going to be tricky. Seeing some of these movies for the first time now removes a lot of the context. Part of the reason Blade Runner had such an impact in 1982 was due to the fact that there really hadn't been anything like it before. Same thing with 2001. It's probably going to bore you to death, but it really set the stage for modern sci-fi films.

Saw all of those, except maybe no The Hitcher. Sounds familiar and was out around the time I absorbed anything that was on HBO, Showtime, or The Movie Channel. I will never watch Amityville, Rosemary's or The Omen ever again. You can add The Exorcist to that list, too. I saw Event Horizon in the movies. It was pretty boss. Just watched it again on Netflix with my daughter a few months back. She dug it, too.

I quite literally spend almost every waking moment that I don't spend working sitting at this computer. I don't watch tv. Unless it's live sports. And I'm seriously considering ditching my cable and getting an Amazon Fire and putting Netflix, YouTube, Hulu and HBO Now on it. Saves me $60 a month that way and I can watch my show commercial free.

Apple TV and the PS3 to stream Netflix and such. If I decide to go with the Xbox One I might consider subbing to slingtv for a month just to check it out.

It's basically an ala carte tv package. I think the basic package is like $20 for 20 channels and then it's $5 for add on packages like an extended sports package. The basic comes with ESPN/ESPN 2, History/History 2 and AMC for sure, which are basically the only channels I'd want. HBO Go is exclusive to Apple TV irrc, but frankly HBO can go suck an egg as far as I'm concerned. I'd honestly just get the MLB networks season package, but local markets are blacked out, so no Royals if I go that way.

HBO Now is available on all of them I think. Regardless, I'd have to have HBO if the GF is ever here. It's really the only thing she watches. I'm really thinking about getting Sirius/XM for the MLB channel.
Most of the MLB teams you can stream the local radio broadcasts over the internet. I just listen to the Royals games on the local AM station and watch a game every week or two at the local sports joint. Grab a burger and an iced tea and hang out for a couple of hours.
Skip Blade Runner, it's too dated by now. Go straight to Serenity and then look-up the Firefly TV series to see where it all began. And if you're into zombies..... the entire Resident Evil series in order because the last one the best.

Serenity, was pretty good though. I was actually rather surprised how well it turned out for a lower budget one.

Event Horizon, I've seen people bash it for some reason. I have no idea why. That is one of my favorite sci-fi-horror movies.

Just watched a movie last night called For Your Consideration. It's a total goof on Hollywood. It's about a movie that is being made called Home For Purim and some supposed Oscar buzz for one of the actors. It stars Parker Posey, Harry Shearer, Catherine O'Hara (the Home Alone mom) and a cast of thousands including Ed Begley, Jr., Ricky Gervais, Eugene Levy, Christopher Guest, John Michael Higgins, Jennifer Coolidge (Stiffler's mom), Michael McKean, Fred Willard, Jane Lynch and more.

There were actually several episode of Firefly that didn't get shown on TV. I watched them and they were also pretty good even though they knew by then the show was dead.

You've probably seen them Bob. Three episodes didn't air during the original run on FOX. They did air in 2003 on Sci-Fi and were included in the DVD releases.
I think they're still on Netflix, and are presented in the intended order. FOX screwed the pooch and played them out of sequence, which made no sense to the audience at large. I don't think Firefly got a fair shake out of the gate.
FOX handled Firefly about as badly as a TV show can be handled.

Heads up on the SlingTV - you get a decent package of channels, but you still need to bring your own internet connection.
But - and here's the kicker that ruled it out for us after I looked into it very closely - $20 only gets you ONE stream. You can only have 1 TV in your house on SlingTV at a time. If you're on AMC in the living room, and the wife flips on Bravo in the bedroom, it cuts off AMC where you were watching. Ditto if she's home and you flip on your Sling feed on the laptop on campus.
It's basically a $20-one-TV-household-wherever-you-go, but it's a one-TV feed.

The outside world is almost pitch black and it never stops raining. The acting is fairly craptacular and the story is pretty simple to figure out in how it is going to end. Both my daughter and me fell asleep at some point during the movie. And her criticism was harsher than mine.
Having said all that, mine is just my opinion. If you like this and have fond memories of it, or consider it a masterpiece of genre filmmaking, then awesome for you. You are certainly entitled to that opinion. Mine will not change.
I just saw, "The Departed" with L. De Caprio and Mat Damon from 2006 I think. Had it on DVR for a couple of months. I really liked it. Lenardo plays an undercover cop after Frank Costello played to a frightening tee by Jack Nicholson. Damon plays a cop on Costello's payroll and they end up after each other. Good acting and hard to predict the outcome. Great mob movie.

It reminds me of nothing more than a 50's detective story where the dame comes into the private dicks office and hires him to investigate the crime. The outside world is almost pitch black and it never stops raining. The acting is fairly craptacular and the story is pretty simple to figure out in how it is going to end. Both my daughter and me fell asleep at some point during the movie. And her criticism was harsher than mine.
Having said all that, mine is just my opinion. If you like this and have fond memories of it, or consider it a masterpiece of genre filmmaking, then awesome for you. You are certainly entitled to that opinion. Mine will not change.
I figured you weren't going to enjoy Blade Runner today. It was a much bigger deal to see it back in the 80s. The whole future noir thing hadn't really been done until Blade Runner. Now it's a trope. If you're watching it today, you have to have an eye to the craft that went into it and made it something new and different at the time.

Lenardo plays an undercover cop after Frank Costello played to a frightening tee by Jack Nicholson. Damon plays a cop on Costello's payroll and they end up after each other. Good acting and hard to predict the outcome. Great mob movie.
Nicholson's character in the movie, and inspiration for the story, was loosely based on the infamous Whitey Bulger.

When I saw it in the 80's, the movie was filmed mostly in the dark and rain and I disliked it then. Today, the movie is still filmed in the dark and rain. Nothing changed. And I didn't expect it to. I wanted to give it a chance because some of you think it is the height of...whatever...and were willing to be really kind of ugly to me for daring not to like it. Now I have watched it again and I remember why I didn't like it to begin with. But, as with all opinions, they are personal and as such, you are welcome to them. I certainly understand defending what you like and wanting others to like it too. Just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

I have zero problems with chick flicks. Mainly because chicks like them and I like chicks ;) Having (misogynistically) said that, I really don't like Russell Crowe. Everything I hear and read about him paints him as a giant jerk and with the exception of Gladiator, everything I have seen him in has not made the movie any better for him having been in it. Love Bradley Cooper though. Silver Linings Playbook with Jennifer Lawrence and de Niro was great. I can take or leave Leo. Titanic is a giant strike against him (for me) but, Gangs of New York was really good. Of all your suggestions, none of which I have seen, I will add Shawshank Redemption. I've been told many times by many people I should watch that.
Blade Runner created an entire sub genre of science fiction and it was based on a seminal science fiction novel. It deserves a certain artistic due, whether or not you personally enjoyed it.
Personally, I think 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most boring films I've ever seen, but I give it its due as a groundbreaking movie that paved the way for other epic (and more entertaining) sci-fi movies. It's worth watching for that alone. It delivered things that no previous sci-fi movie had.

Yeah I've heard the same comments about Russell Crowe , about him being a bit of a macho chauvinist male !! I think it might have something to do with when he's drinking , maybe it changes his character , or maybe he really is just a jerk ! But I don't think the press are always right , it's hard to know ? I've seen him interviewed a few times and he's been more than civil and quite humorous . I know what you mean though , it's hard to watch an actor/actress in a film that you don't really like on a personal level . For me , I can't stand Ryan gosling from the notebook , hes probably a nice guy in life , but he just annoys me :tickedoff: .....ugh !!!!
I saw titanic at the cinema when it came out , and when the ship went down there was a lot of sniffling going on in the room ....um ....including me :'( I don't think Leo was exceptional in that film , but when he's on form , I think he's a tremendous actor . The film I mentioned , this boy's life , I think may have been one of ,if not his first acting role , and boy , does he play it well . I just think that film shows all the promise of the talent that he has , and he and de Niro just spark off each other really well , great casting !
I did nearly add silver linings playbook to the list , because I totally agree with you , it's a great film , I've watched it a few times and it never gets old . I love how neurotic everyone is in that film , perfect functional dis function , hahaha . And one of the cool things is that Bradley cooper appeared on actors studio in the audience before he got famous , he was just a student , and de Niro was being interviewed , and Bradley stood up in the audience to ask him questions .....and then he hits the big time and gets to work with de Niro !!!
