I'm working on a Star Wars tactical space battle project and am stuck. Searching my memories and every Star Wars wiki in three galaxies I can't seem to find an answer to this question:
Did the Rebel Alliance have a starship that served as a carrier for fighter ships like the X-wing? I know TIE fighters, etc, were launched from Star Destroyers (and every other SF series film or TV show I can think I know what ship managed the 'fighter carrier' role). I just can't seem to find out this one. With a fighter like the X-Wing which had hyperdrive it didn't need a space based stopover for fuel but when it needed to re-arm I just can't see it having to jump to somewhere else before re-joining the battle and what if it were damaged and couldn't jump? Thus the idea in my mind for the carrier.
And any source is fine, like if it came from one of the novels or comics or such. I would just like something that was actually designed for the series if possible.

I think Nebulon frigates make sense (i have read somewhere following links, it could hold 24 TIE fighters in the original Imperial usage design)
This could work as the FARPs you re looking for
Before the battle in a star system (hiding behind a moon/planet) and take those damaged x-wings on board after the battle to jump them out of the contested system.
I think anythingy with a docking bay that can hold a single X wing could be used in a mixed swarm of ships building a Rebel Fleet
and its fitting to the concept of Rebels guerrilla warfare to be scattered, joining together for a battle as a strike package, and disturbing into several directions and hide after a battle when the tide was not turning to their favor

IIRC, the Corellian Corvette was used as a base by Rogue Squadron in the books. I know that's not canon, but just sayin'.

I wondered about that one but it seemed a little small...glad I learned about this 'Legends' business. JJ doesn't get to erase my past just because he made the THIRD version of Star Wars (or A New Hope as we must now refer to it which is bad enough). He won't produce enough content to matter before I'm dead so I'm sticking with all the goodness released over 4 decades. Sorry JJ...just the way it is buddy :)

I am at the park, so I don't have my old resources right at my fingertips. But originally the reason the Imperial fighters needed carriers and the rebels did not, was that Imperial fighters were not equipped with hyperdrives, but rebel ones were. So rebel fighters could jump into deep space on their own, much like Luke when he went to Dagobah.
Because the Imperial Fighters couldn't jump on their own, they needed they carriers to move them around. That's why you didn't see any rebel carriers in the movies
Wes, the Mon Calamari Star Cruisers (seen at the Battle of Endor) is probably the closest you're going to really come. I can't remember exactly how many squadrons a MonCal Cruiser typically carries (5? 6?), but it's a decent number.

Conceptually what I'm working on takes it all the way back to Lucas basing battles on WWII footage. Pacific carrier battles is kind of what I'm shooting for, taking control of planets and battling for populations and resources.
Part of my inspiration is to create something that anyone else can if they would like to play out SW battles without 2nd mortgaging the house. My whole set-up should be well under $50.

Yeah, from what I understand Rogue One is all about the team who go in and steal the plans to the Death Star (so it happens right before SW:NH). It'll probably end up looking like a Spec Ops videogame but at least it's different...no main characters, Jedi, Force, etc.
Supposedly, Vader is going to have a significant role in Rogue One. Those are the rumors anyway.

In any case, I was wrong also, I think, about Rogue Squadron using one. Wraith Squadron had a modified Corellian corvette called Night Caller. I think that's what I was thinking of.

And I have officially lost my mind on this Star Wars project.
It all started because they are closing out the latest Risk Star Wars and I thought 'Damn, I can make a tactical fighter game from the bits for less than one expansion for the FFG game' and less than a week later I have more coming in the mail and am starting on large space tiles to break it out on.
If anyone wants in they are selling it for $18.08 at Wal-Mart online and Amazon is price matching it. I understand this is the cheapest anyone has ever seen it.
Now back to compiling my list of battles from the Galactic Civil War...it's gonna get bloody all up in here :)
Star Wars Risk is a fun game.
I've read mixed reviews of the game proper (its not really being Risk (traditional) the biggest complaint).
I just know that mini for mini you can't get that deal anywhere. I'm doing Capital ships as tokens and pulling planet tiles from Disaster Looms to match the planets from the Star Wars Atlas. Finding the rules from the issue of Star Wars Gamer magazine for Star Wars Silent Death looks like a good place to start.

No, it's definitely not Risk, insofar as the base game is concerned.
However, it's fun to me because it has several things going on at once. It reminds me a lot of the old game Queen's Gambit, which I'd love, love to have but is so out of print and in demand that you'll find copies for upwards of $600 online.

My daughter and I played it four times during Christmas break...all in a row. The Rebels won each time. The game is heavily in their favor, though winning is not always a sure thing. In one of our games with me playing the Rebels, she was decimating my forces. Last minute I was finally able to bring the Death Star shield down and managed to get one X-Wing next to her Death Star...and rolled a '6,' blowing it up. (I had maybe three Rebel fighters left, whereas I think you start with 40 or so of them.) LOTS and LOTS of luck, but that meant a game that was nail-biting and went right down to the wire. We liked it a lot.
I've bought a ton of Risk games lately that are 'themed' I guess is the right word and think they all read pretty good. Other folks seem to have a problem with them but with all the great bits inside you can't help but find some fun in there somewhere :)
Just saw a Walking Dead Risk the other day. Only looked at it briefly. The board looks a mess, but, I'm sure it is designed that way for game play.
Any game themed after a popular movie or TV show makes me take pause. I hate that publishers think people are going to buy anything with a popular name slapped on them (yes, yes, I know, they do). Usually it means it's a piece of crap because they rushed it out to take advantage of the craze before it wanes. No idea if that version of Risk is any good, though it's rated just below 7 on BGG, which is above average I think.

Forgot it, along with a few other games we played, over at a friend's apartment when I moved away a few years later.
He brought back the other games when I later returned. But not
Queen's Gambit. I didn't check to see if everything was there because I didn't have any reason to distrust him before. Never saw him again after that & he avoided my calls.
