Just curious if anyone here are regular players of the computer version of Strat-o-Matic Baseball? I know it is not for everyone since it is a season replay game versus career, but thinking of trying it for the first time this year since I am very curious about it, especially with the new feature this year where you can basically keep your computer season somewhat in-synch with what is happening in real-life as the season unfolds. I have played other season replay games such as ActionPC and Replace Baseball, both good games themselves.....
Strat is on the expensive side and doesn't have a great reputation for support, but interested none-the-less...but prefer to hear a little about it before shelling out the money:)

I didn't grow up with Strat-o-Matic but I understand the attachment lots of baseball fans have to it.
Still, OOTP has evolved into something so complete and amazing that I can't imagine ever needing another baseball sim to satisfy me. Definitely one of the 10 games I'd take to a desert island, implausible though that scenario ever is... :)
Yep, but ootp is not the same as season replay games...ootp is great for career, but these other games tend to do much better job at actual coaching experience....plus sometimes just want to play the game versus all the other management stuff.
I see. Sounds interesting, although I think I'll stick to OOTP myself.
It's funny. The calendar turns to February, and it's like I instantly come out of my baseball hibernation. When does spring training start? When does OOTP 17 come out? 8)
I've never played the computer version but as a kid me and 5 of my friends had a league that lasted from 5th grade until 11th. We then got licenses and started paying way more attention to girls so the game disappeared. I'll have to take a look but I'm with Sandman, OOTP seems to offer everything you could want.
Not if you just want to manage the games vs all the gm stuff:)
Strat is a very good single season replay. I have been playing in a league for a few years where the home team will sim the series. Tons of options and seasons to play.
I haven't had any issues with support and haven't really had any gaming stopping bugs.

Thanks for the feedback....really leaning towards trying it this year, although I wish they were a tad bit cheaper....playing the season along with the real world season is very intriguing this year...although that even costs an extra $30:)
Ended up purchasing, figure I would give it a chance this year...didn't buy the daily option yet, I'll see how much I like the game first before investing in another $30 right away....releases on the 16th so hopefully turns out well.

I'm in a similar position as you - OOTP (as great as it is) is just too much for me and I'm really just wanting to make in game decisions as a manager that then affect a single season. Strat seems like the logical choice but I'm afraid that I'll do with it what I do every time I start an OOTP season...play a half dozen or a dozen games and then get bored with it. So I'll be interested to know what you think of it.

I started playing Strat card/board game in 1966 and it was a lifesaver when I was medically homebound for several years. Three of us started an old-timers league and my 1927 Yanks, 1941 Yanks, and 1935 Cubs did quite well. 1st, 3rd, 4th out of 10 teams playing 154 games each. The 1927 Yanks won by 10 games over the 1948 Indians (a good team) who took second place.
Since 1995 I've played the computer version. Even though I haven't played for several years I purchased enough teams, especially the older ones, to determine the best team per decade, each in 11 different leagues:

-1905 to 1919, 1920 to 1929. 1930 to 1939, 1940 to 1949, 1950 to 1959, 1960 to 1969, 1970 to 1979, 1980-1989, 1990 to 1999, 2000 to 2009, 2010 to 2016
I choose a favorite team for each decade, make a computer generated schedule for 154 or 162 game schedule, play all games with my favorites and let the computer play all the rest. Viewing the numerous stats is very thrilling.
Lou Gehrig is my all-time favorite player and it was exciting to watch him lead the league in homeruns for the 1930's decade (his 1936 team). He even hit 4 homeruns in one game, too.
I'm of the belief that it's not possible to determine the all-time #1 baseball team. The game progressed or digressed too much from one decade to another, rules and baseball strategy/emphasis was different at times. On paper and statistically the old-time teams with higher batting averages and lower pitcher era's would most often defeat the more modern World Series champs (I'm still speaking about the Strat-O-Matic baseball game, or Diamond Mind, or Action Baseball, or Pure Sim or OOTP). In reality, however, I think todays baseball players are bigger, stronger, faster all the way around...also richer, more spoiled, etc.) Evolution.
In the decades baseball scenario I'm not suggesting you have all the teams in the decade...only the top ones like World Series winners or playoff teams. Also you can combine a couple decades together if you don't have enough teams. Decades where players had overall similar stats could be combined.
There are numerous baseball books to consult to help you decide on what are the best rated baseball teams (and why). It's a lot of fun.
I'm older now and my son or friends no longer play the games with me. Also, I've taken up fishing and community service so my time is more limited now.
I do prefer computer baseball games where you play and manage the game on the field with real baseball players and teams. The office management and trade aspects don't much appeal to me.
Thanks for sharing....those kind of projects are what make season replay games fun to play versus career games. I typically stick to playing the most recent year with my favorite team or one of their past years where they did something special or came close to see if I could do the same. I have played a lot of the other replay baseball games such as ActionPC. DiamondMind, and Replay Baseball, and they are all good in their own way, but just thought this year I would finally try Strat since it appears to have the largest cult following....I want to find out why:)
The daily lineup add-on has me intrigued because it will allow you to play along with the current year and receive updated ratings/trends, etc....so you can see if you can do better with your current favorite team and compare yourself to them along the way. I'll likely pick it up before the season starts once I confirm I like the base game enough to keep playing it...very curious to see how it works. Although it is more of a subscription since you can no longer use it after December 31st, they'll sell you a new one for 2017.
Well I bit and pre-ordered 2016, 1988 season and the live update. Looking forward to it and hopefully it will be worth the $$

I likely will end up with the live update as well, but I'll see how I like the overall game before the season actually starts. Ouch...a shipping charge for not shipping....yeah, a little odd to me...and the surcharge doesn't really make sense either per order...oh well, I guess I'll see if it is worth it for future purchases...
I'm going with PureSim Baseball....the price is right (free) and the interface is super easy to use. Doesn't have players for 2015 (yet) but does for up to 2014. I grabbed the facepack mod for OOTP (modified the size to 65x90) and am going to see if I can actually play a season:

I gave up on that one, although always seemed interesting. At least in the past the developer often started and stopped supporting the game...often seemingly disappearing. Plus it's a career sim, which this year I am going season replay route.

There are a couple things that may create a shipping charge:
1. If you selected a CD along with the download
2. If you selected the actual cards. I always get the version with the card image, but there is a version that has the actual physical cards
other than that, I can't imagine why there would be shipping charges. I wasn't last year
I went to buy the physical 2016 hall of fame version, but there was the $2 service charge and $13 shipping, which made it around $50.
I ended up going on e-bay and got the 2014 version new for $33 shipped. It was from stat-o-matic anyway.

Pirates relief pitching did their best to try and give the game away....but hold on for the victory. Not sure what I think after the first game, a lot of options I need to understand first. The ballpark graphics are a little grainy (probably the reason they try and sell you the addon hi res version) and some text hard to read, but I didn't expect a whole lot in text based game.

Daily option is what most intrigued me, got me to buy this year:) Although before I drop the extra $30 on the daily feature, need to make sure I like the base game...I have to give it a lot more time before I decide that. However, on initial game, from a features perspective ActionPC Baseball seems to have more, but maybe I am just more familiar with that since have played that for years and this is my first time with Strat....their pricing model is steep though compared to other games...they are going to force me to buy the $30 ballpark photos too since not sure I can stand to look at crappy pictures:)

My plan is to buy add ons every few days, it will make it seem like there separate purchases:) No doubt OOTP will be cheaper and if you like career, certainly more packed into that game....but OOTP doesn't typically have as strong in-game managing functions like these season replays, plus they won't have the ability to play along with the season...in the end likely will pick up OOTP during some future sale, always room for more than one game:)

I did because I'm an old idiot and checked the hi-res ballparks on installation. Having done so when you start a game it asks for the code and if you don't enter it errors out of the entire game. I'm sure I could have uninstalled but then worried about activations, etc so said eff it and bought them.
They look good if not a little stretched on my 26"...will need to not play it in full screen.

I did the same thing with my install, but I uninstalled versus buying:). I have a 39 inch monitor so I wonder how stretch it would become....hate to reduce the screen since I like all the widgets I can display. Maybe I'll see what the community has to offer before buying....thanks for the info.

I tell you, I'm really enjoying the PureSim baseball. I'm playing it in season mode (you have a choice on season or career). My AI managers handle the minors and callup's so I don't have to worry about that. I just manage my lineup's and then put on plays as desired. I'm playing the 2014 season as the Rangers and am 3-0 to start the season (swept the Phillies). The game is fully customizable and was able to use the mods that people made for OOTP for the faces, logo's and ballparks. The interface is clean and very simple to use and I like that I can use the keyboard shortcuts to control just about everything (not a lot of clicking). If you're a stat tweaker, the player databases are in simple MS Access db's, so they are easy to modify to suit your own tastes. I also like that ballpark measurements, elevation and wind tendencies are factored in. This fits my needs perfectly and again - for the price (free), it's worth a look (last update was a year ago but hoping that they keep working on it).
Nope you can't beat free:). The developer has been in many places....on his own, wolverine, matrix, back on hi own, etc. he does this as a part time thing so understandable that he might not keep up with things. I always thought it had a good start and has potential, but I just prefer a game that is a little more predicatable with support and updates. But again it is free, so really no room to complain.
Played a few more games and have come to the conclusion pirates pitching sucks:) haven't won a game since my first one and pitchers giving up a lot of runs. Hopefully this weekend will have time to start a season to see how things play out and make a final decision whether I like it enough to spend more money on add ons.
I had a real nail-biter last night vs Tampa Bay. Had a 2-0 going into the bottom of the 9th. My setup man had closed out the 8th wonderfully and my closer was ready to try and close things out. Your Pirates are tied with Detroit for the best record in the Majors (5-0) starting my season. I just suffered my first loss of the season to Tampa Bay. Gave up too many long balls. Something neat about PureSim that I hadn't noticed before is a weekly "paper" is published giving a run-down of the week. It shows the hits leader, pitching leaders, sabermatics score (top players), injury reports, trade details and highlights from the week. Nice feature.
There's only a few things that I wish PureSim had though and would be interested to know if Strat has this:
1. Ability to swing the infield/outfield around to play dead pull hitters.
2. The need to warmup pitchers in the bullpen. That's always a neat feature in OOTP and other baseball sims that I've played. In PureSim, you just sub the pitcher as needed.
And that's about it.
Andreas, you've played PureSim- aside from the fact that support is iffy (we still don't know if there will be a new version for this season as there was for last), what features does Strat have that are lacking/missing in PureSim? Are you pleased with the purchase or still too early to tell?
From my perspective, it will take awhile to really know if strat is something I will stick with every year. If you play other replay games like ActionPC and Replay Baseball, it is made with the same mold and might not be worth purchasing because not enough different and in some cases the other products "may" be better depending on your on desires. Just a couple of random points.
1) Already discussed many times, but cost is a big factor with me. Not just for the base game, but all the add-ons you would want. Also, it seems each year's new version only has minor enhancements and a list of bugs it fixes (don't like paying for bug fixes) but your kind of forced to buy it since some seasons won't work without it and you can't play the latest season since it is bundled. The counter argument to the cost is the fact most people who play strat are die hards and certainly get their money's worth.
2) Included stadium pictures are not that great, at least on my screen...very grainy and just not good to look at. Sure, I could buy the $30 add-on to make them look better:) Screen fonts are sometimes hard to read as well, but maybe that is an issue with my monitor, although I don't see that in any other game.
3) Actual on field game play is fairly basic, you have the standard pitching/defense options and the standard batter options, nothing really surprising here. I do wish there was a little more included for strategy since I find myself often just clicking the "Next Pitch" button without putting a whole lot of time making decisions. Its based on a card and dice game, so I guess not surprising.
4) Outcomes seem realistic so I don't think that is an issue. Stats/ratings seem to matter and nothing too crazy gets generated.
5) When it comes to playoffs, you have to sort of manually setup...it has an option to generate a playoff league, but it takes extra steps and not contained within the same year you played it.
6) There are a lot of game options to allow you to play the game you want....as played lineups, basic/advanced, etc. It will take me awhile to figure out what is all there, but flexibility is there from what I can see.
7) Looking in the forums, seems like there are roster issues and from the comments people make, seems like it is a quality issue every year, especially with transactions being correct.
8) Strat has always had the reputation of having poor customer service and you can still see comments to that fact in the forums and other places. Sometimes takes them days to return support questions and I even read in one manual that if you call them it is something like $1.99 per minute for the call...not sure if that is left over from the past or still in effect. If so, that is crazy.
Keep in mind I am very new to this game so some of my comments may not be 100% accurate and a strat expert might have different views or ways of doing things....
If you like baseball season replays and you don't already own some of the other ones out there, I think it is worth a look....but if you play the others and are satisfied, not sure there is enough here to make you switch, at least in my opinion. I don't regret buying it since I always wanted to see what the hype was about and I do enjoy playing it, just not sure it will become my main "go to" game for baseball.
The daily option out soon so you can play along with the season...still on the fence but really intrigued

Never tried that one.....saw a version 6 being worked on, maybe I'll give a try once that is released
