Anyone played this game? It is $10 at GOG and looks interesting. Several good mods for it, too.
I have very fond memories of it. What a great game it was.
It's single player, story driven RTS in space. The battles are more "personal" in scale than in Homeworld, as you command only handful of ships, that go with you from mission to mission. If you lost one - tough luck.
You can upgrade them with various engine and weapon subsystems. The Z axis is somewhat important, which is not always the case for space RTSes. You can have some mandatory (for the genre) fighter and bomber wings ready to be launched from you craft.
There was a sequel planned, with a trailer that looked like nothing before, and the scope of their pitch was, I think, not matched yet by any release in the genre.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vYO8AaZwMM - just look at that - it's from 2006 or 2007.
It's a great game and i've enjoyed it very much. I still plan to replay the campaign this year.
I only played a little bit, but it seemed like it was on rails, ship movement anyway. Am I wrong or does that change when you get past the early missions? Maybe I should revisit this.
Great game. Still very good graphics by todays standard. Good campaign and definitely worth $10
Edit: I would add that there is a mod that allows you to create custom battles between the different ship types. Nothing mind blowing, but sometimes you just want to blow stuff up
Absolutely concur. Really great space RTS. If you poke around you can find a great mod that allows you to set up skirmish battles, too. One thing I really liked about it - if you were fighting in say, some asteroids in the ring of a gas giant, it really seemed that way - the planet was HUGE and you couldn't see the entire thing, your ships felt tiny in comparison to the vastness around you.
Definitely worth $10 even today. Too bad they never managed the sequel.
It's $10 on Steam, too.
Nexus: The Jupiter Incident just received a major patch! Mostly updates dealing with screen resolution and modding, but it should make the game more playable on modern systems.

Seems to be only available for the Steam release. I still have the CD version installed.
There is a comment in the GOG forum for the game that they are working on getting the patch too.

I've got to be honest, I dont get all the raving about this game. I've gone back to it three or four times over the years to check if the problem was just me, but every time, it leaves me bored and frustrated. I like all the components in the game, but for some reason the sum of all the parts is missing something. I'm not a particular fan of the first few ships you get to command and it seems to take far too long to open up with options.
I dunno...it just doesn't feel like an authentic naval capital ship simulator in space to me, as some people like to describe it. I get an instant hardon when someone says that, but then when I play? Total shrinkage.
^ Jupiter Incident: The Anti-Boner.
The game does look good, but having never played it, the displays make the game look like it has a very steep learning curve.
I wasn't that impressed with it when it first came out because it seemed to me that each mission was designed so that there was only one viable strategy available to beat it. Rather than being able to use the ship customization options to explore different tactics to beat the mission, it became an exercise in trial-and-error as you did the save/reload thing until you hit upon the one build needed to succeed.
It's mostly the story-based aspect that drove me into the game and the amazing special effects. Also the impression to be a captain.

apart from the penis bits im in full agreement, got it v cheap on steam and hardly made it out of the tutorials first few missions, very dry and unentertaining - i did come across a capital ship thing last week but its PvP
To play skirmish matches against the AI somebody made Nexus Skirmisher : http://arparso.de/nexus/index.html
The Skirmisher is a tool, that lets you create skirmish battles for the space real-time strategy game 'Nexus: The Jupiter Incident'. Play against the AI with fully configurable fleets and create exciting new battle scenarios. The Skirmisher is fully compatible with most available mods as well.

pretty much this. I could come up with 20 ways to beat levels in the Homeworld series but this game only has the one path.
Trouble is there are very few large battleship/starship games out there. Lots of lone wolf fighter games, hardly any decent sized starship games. Nexus was one of the few. Star Trek Online. Starshatter. I can't think of many more, without mentioning Derek Smart... *shudder*.
Fractured Space isn't bad, if you can handle class based ships in a MOBA.
I suppose Star Trek Bridge Commander might be considered one of them...
And now I guess we might have Battleship Gothic.
We need more huge Space Opera military Capital ship battles. With glorious visuals and a lot of tactical depth.

too right - some of the space battles in the space marine novels are awesome - if you could have one massive capital ship and RPG the whole thing it would be cool
Star Hammer isn't bad.
There's a nice little tactical ship combat game called
Flotilla which is a lot of fun and quite challenging.
Star Conflict has captial ships now. It's free to play. I had some fun with it when it first game out but I quit playing before captial ships were released. I might give it another try. Definitely looks nice if nothing else.
^Quite sexy.

Flotilla was a cool game, and one of the very few that could do a passable job at three dimensional movement (primarily because it's turn-based).
However, I didn't play it long because the content was pretty thin. Very short campaign experience. Not to mention it was just some glowing blocks representing ships.
Loved the basic mechanics of it, disappointed with how short & light it was. There was a good base to build a great game on, but they never took it any further.

Star Conflict was fun for a space fighter kind of multiplayer match-based game. Think I stopped playing it because War Thunder Air Forces moved to Open Beta and lots more people started playing and I started doing that more. SC did have some enjoyable gameplay in it's early days.
If SC has received some capital ships to mix with the fast pew pew lazagun flyers, then I may have to check it out soon too! :)
I
did scan the SC forum a year or two ago, to see if they had anything new & flashy. Seemed like a lot of complaints about the NA server being overrun by Russian players making teamwork rather difficult. I loaded up & logged in very briefly but so many of the stats & such had changed since I last played, it ended up being rather confusing and I didn't continue onward.
