Hello.
Lately, I've been reading more of Henryk Sienkiewicz, specifically, his book on the northern crusades ( The Knights of the Cross or, Krzyzacy ) http://www.amazon.com/The-Knights-Cross-Krzyzacy-ebook/dp/B004TQ6HCQ/ref=pd_sim_kstore_4?ie=UTF8&m=AG56TWVU5XWC2
This is essentially the same story told in M2TW:Kingdoms Teutonic campaign and Real Warfare 2: Northern Crusades.
I've played through the M2TW campaign twice. I've been eyeballing RW2 for a while now. I think I would enjoy it, but I've spent a lot of money on $20 games lately and I'm finding it hard to justify another $34 on top of it all...especially as I'm not sure I'm sold on it.
I'm not interested in getting this game through another venue for cheaper like Impulse (except Amazon.com, which doesn't have it right now). I know a few of you have played this game...is it $34 good? That's not a ton of money, but too much on a big gamble nowadays with some many $10-20 games out there. For $20 I'd buy it, for $34 I need a few endorsements. I like the idea, but I already have Mount and Blade and Total War, so I'm not sure this will really scratch that itch in a $34 different way.
Wait for a sale.
Yeah, it goes on sale fairly regularly.
I've enjoyed it, but there are some things I'd like to see added to fill it out some more. There's supposed to be another update in the works, hopefully it arrives sometime in the near future as I'd like to jump back in soon.
BTW.. thanks for the ebook link. There are so many Free old public domain books on Amazon that I get lost in the huge mass, spending lots of time downloading them but always missing some that I'd prefer over most.
Here ya go.. it's probably $17.49 good. Currently on sale at Impulse.
http://www.impulsedriven.com/realwarfare2nc
Is it better, worse or the same as the TW Teutonic campaign? That is one of my favorite TW games ever. Maybe THE favorite.
I dunno. I really couldn't get into M2TW or it's other campaigns very long at a time.
If I were given the option right now, between the two, I'd play Real Warfare. It's more challenging battles is a plus. But the campaign isn't like TW - more like Mount & Blade Lite - you command a single army.
I'd strongly prefer to not have to download another client on my computer, so I'll wait for it to go on sale on Steam I guess. I still have to finish KA1 and KA2 (part of my recent $20 purchases) so I'm not necessarily in a rush to buy another TW-type game. I'm just a little burned out on Total War- I've been playing it an awfully long time and I'm interested in new takes on it. I really like KA1 but it is so bloody hard all the time, ugh, sometimes my brain just needs a break!
With respect to the free books, I really enjoyed With Fire and Sword. It is, essentially, a love story that takes place in the backdrop of the war. I've read 30% of Knights of the Cross but I think I'm going to put it on hold for a bit. It's essentially a very similar story to Fire and Sword; another convoluted love story! I'm 30% in and I can't help but think that I just read this story in Fire and Sword. No real fighting up to this point so I'm going to hit the pause button.
I have another free book I downloaded called Barbarossa, An Historical Novel of the XII Century by Conrad von Bolanden. I'm about 10% into this book and there's been plenty of fighting so I'm a bit more into it. The writing is fairly easy and somewhat similar to Fire and Sword but not quite as strange.

There are a ton of free books out there if you follow that link.

The
King Arthur game received some lowered difficulty, in one of the latest updates to it. So if you haven't tried it in awhile perhaps you should.
I think you're probably wise in waiting for RW2NC on Steam, because the other places have the limited installs version of Starfarce on them. Ironically, Starforce's limited online installs is probably one of the easier-going of the lot, although it's still crap just like the rest. It automatically gives you one install (of 4) back every month no matter what. I grabbed the Steam version so I wouldn't be beholden to Starforce's continued existence. Lesser of two stinky evils 'n all that.
I checked the 1C forum about once a week to see if there's any updates on the upcoming patch.
It's said that the patch is nearing completion and some localization (translation) is being done. No idea what's in it, may just be some bug fixes but I'm hoping there are some nice changes (like in Mitra's mod) as well.

I suspect it is too late for this game at this point since I believe it was originally released in November '11. At first I kind of liked it, before things fell apart for me and it seemed there was a lack of official support. I suspect we will routinely see this title in the bargain bin starting real soon.
If anyone finds it on sale for 20.00 or less, please post here. Reading the differences that Nefaro and others put above I would enjoy it.

After you play it vanilla for a bit, and get used to it (beaten like ginger stepchild!) you might want to pick up Mitra's great mod for it, has some good adjustments:

He won't show up until 2 hours after the sale is taken down.
Murphy'd again!
Before you buy, seems like 1c and the developer actually split ways back in December and that is why support has been so bad. Personally doubt much further progresses on this game. So buyer beware.

Hey Gus, I'm not sure but I may have an extra unused copy on my Gamersgate account after purchasing that massive 1C pack for $20 a couple months ago. PM me your email address, and if I can gift it.. then I'll send it.
I had considered keeping that one since it's technically a different version than the one I currently have that requires Steam - just in case a future 'unofficial' update or mod wasn't Steam supported or some such. But it should be fine. The GG version has internet activations through StarForce (although their version is surprisingly more lenient than others) while the Steam one doesn't, however.
EDIT: Yep, it's still "unused".
I also have Rig 'N Roll and Fantasy Wars copies if anyone wants them.
Wait, what happened...I was out of town!

LOL, thanks for the offer but I'm good, Nefaro. But if you happen to come across a 3rd copy of Real Warfare, I hope you don't give that to Gus too! ;D

You're next on the list. ;)
I didn't realize so many ppl were holding out for this one, lately. ;D
As a reminder - you may want to add Mitra's mod after you try vanilla for a bit. He's done a good job at polishing up some things, and it's pretty much an unofficial patch IMO.
Note that the game can be quite difficult, especially starting off, and this may make it a tad more so.
QuoteUnified all my mods in one + two additions:
https://rapidshare.com/files/946556667/mitra-rw-mod.rar
Changes:
- Is not possible to do circle if more than the 25% of soldiers is in combat, for avoid too easy circle use for avoid encirclement
- retreat zones: if a not routed grup move on the map angle, it will retreat from the battle like a routed unit; for campaign battle at place of retreat button
- no more displayed the red bases on the enemy units
- now if a group is not visibile on the minimap will be invisible also on the battle map
- the fire on enemy units is stopped if they are in melee with friendly units; the only exception is in the case of short range fire (aimed shoot) if no friendly soldier is in the fire arc)
- implementation of wood zones density: effect on FOW range and visibility, effect on arrows precision, effect on movement velocity
- indirect fire penalty: if between the shooter and the target a friend unit is present the shoot is considered indirect and has precision penalty, with the exception in the case target friendly an shooter are at different height level.
- change of arrows precision on the base or arc and target rank numbers: if the shot is parabolic a bigger number of ranks increase the hits number, a low number decrease it; if the shot arc is low it works at contrary.
- Displayed the influence range of commander: Press X for display it
- Displayed the range of maximum influence of horn sound: Press CTRL+X for display it

Not to worry, Neffy. Gus needs to go through his elaborate Gussification rituals before he'll fire up the game anyway. Could take weeks for him to gather the required Tomes of Prima and Osprey and desktop wallpaper featuring burly Teutons waving their spears and magic helmets.

I just created the proper file structure so I could activate/deactivate it with JSGME. Never know when I may need to go back to vanilla ( if that patch ever shows up in the future).
Using a mod enabler for games with these limited Online Activations is almost a must these days. When you have to install & uninstall a few extra times, it only gives Murphy more of a chance to burn one of your activations, and if it happens enough in a short period you could end up with a big headache on your hands.
IIRC, I've had one de-activation not actually deactivate when I uninstalled one of these games before - I suppose because the 'activation server' or it's bandwidth was too busy and mine got lost on the way there. Oddly enough the Starforce online activation setup is less a pain in the ass as the others since it's supposed to regenerate one of your allowed installs every month or so. So, in this case, you probably don't need to worry about adjusting it for JSGME.
^Hey my copy has appeared, thanks again.
Should I try a vanilla campaign or go straight for the mod?
I don't think it matters, as long as you actually play it!
^Well now that's just crazytalk. I have been doing well with playing what I have been buying lately though.
Try a vanilla campaign is always my recommendation. You will likely have to start from the beginning at least one extra time because your early game decisions are tough and cripple your army. So you'll likely decide to give it a fresh start once you've learned enough about it - that is probably they time you wanna check out the mod and it's myriad fixes.
Just make sure you're patched up-to-date first!
Does the game auto-update?
Depending from the version Steam yes, the others not. Verify if your version is already updated to 225.
^Thanks, I got mine from Gamersgate.

The publisher should've uploaded the latest patch to GG, but they don't always do it (or keep the latest there).
Go into My Games and click on it. Over on the right side where you'd normally click to download the installer, there's a spot in the same area with update d/l links. I don't recall what version the latest was off-hand. 2.2.5?
Ok, so are we in agreement that Real Warfare Northern Crusades is $18 good? It's on sale at Steam 'till the 23rd and oh can I resist? Probably not.

I think it's $18 good.
But I've had no crashes on it, as a few people still do it seems.
Just remember that publisher and developer had a fallen out so official support is scarce. Some mention of a new patch some day, but no timeline since I believe the developer is working on their new game instead.
