Title: Winter Thunder
Post by: PanzersEast on February 17, 2016, 10:51:16 PM
Well, had to postpone my Trajan play through as I had to referernce the charts in the magazine which became irritating... so I ma redoing them all and printing on card stock...

So, I have started a game by Tiny Battle Publishing, White Thunder: The Battle of the Bulge.  The game is considered medium complexity and solo friendly.  The Germans are tasked with pushing West to the Meuse River and either crossing to the north or the west and off the map.

The German score points for every motorized combat unit that exits the map or combat unit that is adjacent to or north or west of the Meuse River at the end of the game..... as well as each enemy division destroyed and towns and cities occupied that he did not at the beginning.  The allies score points by eliminating enemy divisions and for each conditional reinforcement division entered into the game.

The Map is pretty nice, although a little thin, however graphically it is very well laid out and a fairly small footprint.  The counters come on 2 sheets and while small, they are glossy and feel rather sturdy.  Quality wise I think for the price point is good value.  The rule book is roughly 8 pages and breaks down each section of play with special and optional rules.  I'll report back....

The sequence of play it broken down into game turns representing 2 days:

Initial Phase
Out of Supply / Reinforcement / Division replenishment with replacements

Operations Phase
During this phase chits are pulled one at a time activating the corresponding HQ unit on the map allowing them to move and conduct combat.

End Turn Phase
Return Activation Chits / Markers are removed / Advance Next Turn

One thing of note:  The SS units are a Magenta Color.... not sure about that one  ::)

Looks great. Not too big, so maybe playable in one session.

Do you have any shots of the pink SS?

On second thought I see some pinkies waiting on the reinforcement table.

Yea, they are not too bad... the chit pull with HQs keep things fluid as you can not really plan too far ahead either way.  It says 3hr, however my game went over that.  For $21 there is pretty good value for the money.

That is a bargain at $21

skeptical it can be played in 3 hours though. The suggested playing time on wargame boxes always seem under estimated by a factor or two I've noticed.
