Title: Its Friday!
Post by: paplan on March 04, 2016, 12:36:04 AM
Apologies for starting this thread early.
I'm new here, not really sure of the rules.
Just drove home from Camp Lejeune, where son finished SOI and just joined the 3-6 today.  Really impressed with the NCOs.

Got home a day early, and was hoping to see a Friday thread.

I'll try to start this one.

Let's see...

Pathfinder for some tabletop RPG gaming goodness

Divinity Original Sin

Dunno, just installed a new OS so I'm more likely to be tinkering with that than playing games this weekend.  But assuming I get the time:

Wurm Online of course

NeonXSZ

Celestian Tales: Old North is a JRPG-styled game which aren't very prevalent on Linux so I picked it up because I was in the mood for one.

In honour of his seniority here it's customary every Friday to post a link to any Bon jovi song you like for Metal Dog and work the lyrics into the thread title - something like 'you give FRIDAY a bad name' - he loves that one

Going to a big nerdfest tomorrow night to play some Sails of Glory and check out some of the other miniatures games.

Still trying to attain my next rank in Naval Action.

Just finished Rise of the Tomb Raider so I'm not sure what to play next.

Playing a bit of Close Combat Gateway to Caen. I'm not sure I am liking this, dont get much control over your soldiers. Hard to see the terrain and defensive capabilities.

Getting Mius Front as soon as it releases. Woohoo.

Also screwing around with Scourge Of War Waterloo mods.

I plan to play mostly the following games.

- Grand Ages: Rome...i failed twice at the "Cross the Rubicon" military scenario...it's challenging and fun, still i hope i manage this map this weekend.

- I will continue my second Master of Orion campaign with the Humans (first was with the Burathis). Take my time and don't pressure the AI too much.

Maybe a little of other games: Horizon, Stardrive 2 (DLC should be available soon) etc...

What did you think of Rise of the Tomb Raider?

I played Tomb Raider (last one) and I couldn't get into it. I'm still trying, but it's a slog tbh.

As for me, probably some F1 2015, pCars and I might start another campaign in Masters of Orion and take on a combat stance rather than a diplomatic mood...make friends with the other two factions and take on my biggest threat kind of thing.

My daughter is back from University this weekend for my birthday though and it's Mothers Day so I might not get a lot played.

I really enjoyed Rise of the Tomb Raider but if you didn't like Tomb Raider, you probably won't like this one either as they are quite similar.

Miss Front, once it's released
Xcom 2
farcry Primal
MOO 3 for part 3 of my Lets play video series
Maybe some Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Future Soldier. Love the active camo.

Wednesday we head out for 2 weeks of vacation, so this weekend will be spent preparing.  What gaming I can get in  will be devoted to the new build of Predestination and perhaps firing up a new Victory and Glory campaign.

I'm not playing anything that really excites me at the moment.

paplan - sorry - I didn't know what your post meant. I believe congrats are in order. And as UCG says - normal practice is to honour MetalDog, anything Bon Jovi normally grabs his attention  >:D

JH - I absolutely love the GR series...especially the last one.

As for MOO3, I did watch one of your videos. As well done as it was (and kudos for doing them - anything for the community should be applauded), I just couldn't get into MOO3 (which I got as part of the MOO bundle) - not even with the help of your video...not after the beauty of the latest MOO. It may be a shell of the others and simplified, but it is stunning and I actually really enjoyed the game.

Mius Front - when I will finally have time to get my hands on it, that is.

Also - Sovereignty: Crown of Kings turned out to be surprisingly captivating.

Other than that I will continue my quest (not to say - grind) to earn enough cash to deck out my mercenaries with decent equipment in Battle Brothers.

You're not breaking any rules, paplan.  Just glad you like the tradition enough to want to start one of your own :)

And congrats to you and your son!  You must be very proud!

Finally, don't listen to those who say Bon Jovi is the way.  God will deal with them for their treacherous taste.

I know, I know...you're a shameless graphics whore and like the moth to the flame, are attracted to anything new and shiny.  O:-). You certainly are not alone in disliking moo3. In fact, it is clearly the majority opinion, but for a select few of us, it is still the best, most immersive 4x experience.

I tried the new moo and liked it, but I found it only made me want to fire up moo3. I'm disappointed there have not been any patches or updates for the new moo yet. I was hoping for a quick and aggressive cycle through early access. I'd like to see more content in it before I make any judgments, but the fact that it gives me the urge to play an older version is pretty telling.

Speaking of air, the Interwebs has a special message for MD from BJ...

As for playing...not sure. I have to go to Oklahoma Monday morning and still have some prep work to do for that. I might take a small solitaire game with me though I might not get to it.

If I do anything it'll need to be something to further one of my AARs.

I think there's a good chance that something comes out tonight. Minor updates should come out about once a week while major updates should come out once a month.

Finished my Empy campaign (and AAR) at last. Plenty of good things to try next, but I'm still coughing off the pseudo-flu, so I suspect I'll mostly be sleeping.

And Barbieroasting with Barth if he gets a turn in this weekend on our DC3 game.  >:D

Welcome to the forum and congrats, paplan

First priority for me after work today is getting my gaming PC back online. Its been down all week with what I hope is just a dying cpu cooler. Between work and doing more paperwork for the new house I haven't been able to find the time to do it after work this week. Starting to go through gaming withdrawals. MUST PLAY SOMETHING!
.
I'll be streaming streaming something tomorrow morning on my twitch channel. With the PC down I haven't been able to get anything prepared. Possibilities are a scenario from the CMANO community pack, Continue my Aurora Let's Play or Cities Skylines.

After the stream I have some CMANO scenario work to do. Mainly redoing work on the 1950 Battleship scenario I started on my stream last week. Accidentally saved over the scenario when I was doing some testing last weekend. Thankfully, I didn't lose to much work but was a good reminder of why you should always back stuff up.

Diablo 3 and Aurora will round out my weekend gaming. Probably should get started on packing too. Have 2.5 weeks until I move into the new place.

I also toy with the idea of more children and then recall The Wife is the oldest of four girls, as is her mom, and then I flush my head down the toilet. Clears my thinking.

I am nearing the end of my space and apocolyptic gaming mood and will be cracking open either Metal Gear V or Attila Age of Charlemagne next, not sure which.

I'm impressed with you guys who can even toy with the idea of having more kids. My wife and I had our first, a few years went by, and we both thought, "It'd be really nice for her to have a sibling." Then we had a second.

We let that experience sink in for a few weeks... and then resolved never, ever to contemplate or discuss the possibility of a third...    :)

Anyway I'll stop with the kiddie talk now. There are far more important matters to discuss -- like how awesome we think Mius Front will be? Just pretty awesome? Or mind-blowingly awesome?

This weekend will be Car Mechanic 0.75 as I attempt to get the timing belt off my car so I can finally remove the head to get the valves fixed.

Also sending Jason 2 turns of DC3 just to throw him off balance.  ^-^

Also Finishing up Wing Leader with SDR and then to start to learn Plan Orange so we can try that.

Also some VASSAL module work.

If I get a chance maybe something different like Civ IV with MD and Tuna or CiV solo.

Unfortunately the Graviteam Tactics games don't do anything to help ease in new players -- the UI is unintuitive and strange. And the game mechanics are unlike any other I've encountered -- it's a completely unique experience and so the learning curve at first can be pretty steep.

So I think to enjoy Op Star and probably now Mius Front, it takes a pretty determined effort. You have to want to solve all the little headaches and confusions. If not, it's very easy to fiddle around with it a few times and just throw up your hands in despair. (I've had a similar experience recently with The Seven Years War -- I suspect there is a really great game in there, but I just haven't had the patience or mental energy to figure it out.)

I guess all I can say is, if you love in-depth WW2 combat simulation, it is absolutely worth the effort of trying to figure Graviteam out.  I've been playing Op Star again of late in anticipation of Mius Front -- after a long hiatus of not playing seriously for maybe 2 years. Combat Mission really took its place for me in the meantime. But going back to Op Star, I'm just very impressed again at what a masterpiece the game is. It offers a much more fluid and dynamic experience than Combat Mission, which can often devolve into micromanagement tedium in which is takes days of gaming sessions just to complete a single 90-minute scenario. Combat Mission still models infantry combat with much more realism and attention to detail, but in some other key respects, Op Star has a sizable edge -- above all with its dynamic campaign, which makes the campaign system of Combat Mission seem really primitive by comparison.

Anyway, not meaning to turn this into a Graviteam vs. Combat Mission debate -- I think they're both excellent. But I just really believe that for anyone who's willing to put up with the steep learning curve and strangeness, Graviteam Tactics (including now Mius Front I have no doubt) offer an incredibly rewarding, satisfying experience.

For the sake of accuracy and posterity, you are correct.  Bison is the originator of the Friday thread.  However, I was the one that introduced music in naming the thread and starting the opening post with it.  And if you all continue to torture me with Bon Jovi, I will be sure to start every FRIDAY thread from now until ever with some appropriately crappy music.  Like disco.  Or country.  Or dubstep.  See if I don't.

Welcome paplan....here's a by no means all inclusive list of bands to stay away from, buts it a good start.
Bon Jovi
Winger
Firehouse
Warrent
Brittany Fox
Mr. Big
Night Ranger

Thats all my feeble mind can conjure up at this time, there's more, the list is long and pathetic ;). God MetalDog please don't....think i hate dubstep more than Jovi, i just realized that about myself. As far as gaming goes, MIUS Front baby, going to my daugthers talent show then going to lock and load Mius front. Looking forward to getting some graphics whore goodness on my new rig. As i relearn the game i'll set it too arcade mode and limited battle radius.I'm also in a DCB campaign using  free setup, things are going well so far. Been following Tigers on the Hunt and that made me want to load up combat command with its phased based game play.Seems like im in an all wargame mood.

On the gaming front, I'll be continuing with the PzB Normandy comp over at the Blitz and Doug and I are battling for Berlin in Danube'85.

paplan - sorry - I didn't know what your post meant.

I had a really fun yet stupid session of Sails of Glory tonight.  There`s a group of mainly miniatures players that meets up here in Vancouver once a month and plays various games.  I pulled out Sails of Glroy and ended up getting 5 players who wanted to try it out.  One guy had played before and had much more experience than anyone else but he was really bad at it. The other 3 we completely new to it and the 5th player was me.

Anyway,I threw together a little scenario where the French had hired an American privateer to land off the coast of Ireland and transfer arms and money to Irish nationalists.  The wind changed and pinned the American ship against the shore.  A British 3rd rate ship of the line, a frigate, and a sloop showed up to try to capture the American privateer.  A French 2nd rate ship of the line and a frigate showed up to engage the British in order to allow the American to slip away.  The French-US side would gain an automatic victory if the privateer could escape off the far end of the map where the Brits entered from.

I played the American ship.  I was pinned in a harbour surrounded by shoals and a rocky island with a lighthouse so it required careful planning in order to get out of the harbour and make for open ocean.  The two guys playing as the French were comically inept even though one of them was the guy with the most experience playing the game.  In our first attempt at the scenario, the two French ships repeatedly collided with each other and did so much damage that they surrendered to the Brits without firing a shot.

Because it ended so quickly, we decided to have another crack at it.  The second game went a little better but the French/US side still lost.  The French ship of the line ended up catching on fire, springing a leak in her hull, and then grounded herself on a sandbar all in one turn and then struck her colours but not before dealing out a fair amount of damage.  The other Frenchie (commanded by the guy with the most experience but least skill) managed to sail around off in his own little corner of the map and not really contribute in any way until the battle was almost over and then charged right into the guns of the big Brit ship, got hammered by raking fire, and lost two masts.

I almost got away but I got caught by the wind once and pushed back.  I sank the British sloop but then was rammed by the frigate and started to sink. Had I been able to pull around just a little tighter, I would have successfully tacked and been away.  Bloody fun game!

Just finishing-up the CMBN user-made campaign, "A Bridge Too Close"-- a short 2 battle campaign where the 82nd AB grabs a bridge from the Germans on D-Day and then has to hold it against a furious counterattack. My AB guys were literally down to their last rifle and mortar rounds before the Cavalry arrived.

Boggit: I loved the Road to Monteborg campaign for CMBN. Lots of tough fights.

Gus: I'm loving PoE too. One un-solicited piece of advice, take your time with the Character Creation as there are lots of choices and talents/skills to choose from. Try making a few characters just for fun first and to get used to it. The game will save your characters and you can later hire them at any Inn.

Because the music sucks?  It's power chords and hair spray and 'anthems' that everyone can hold a lighter up in the air to or put a fist up to rock out.  And it's all cheese.  Phony.  Music for people who have milquetoast tastes and want to appear hip or dangerous.  It's lucrative as hell, which makes my opinions look like snobbery, because if there's that much money to be made, SOMEone has to be enjoying and paying for it.  It just sounds like muzak to me.  And who likes THAT?!

I have an extremely eclectic taste in music...from classical to punk to rock to house to motown and specific era's - 60's, 70's and 80's particularly.

I don't think there's ever been any one artist or group I liked everything they did - but I'd be surprised if I ever found an artist who's not done at least one song I would like.

Sometimes it's the words, sometimes it's the performance and sometimes (mostly) it's the music.

An example is my listening to Nena Live '98...a German artist singing in German. I have absolutely no idea what she's singing, but the music is fantastic and I love the German accent. Was hast du in meinem Traum gemacht? and Dann fiel mir auf being two of my favs   :)

As I grow older, I find myself looking for new stuff to listen to.  But some bands/genres I've listened to for so long that I have to be in a very specific mood to listen to anymore.  And some I had very little tolerance for to begin with.  Generally though, I am with you on being able to find at least one song or representative of a genre that I can like.

Those power ballads and poser rock was all they would play on the radio in the 80's and all the girls liked that shit. In my area metal was Saturday night from 12:00 - 3:00 am on a show called metal shop, 3 hours a week otherwise you had to own the music. i believe if i remember right MTV had late hours for metal music also. I've widen my taste over the years but some things I just cant do and dubstep, disco, country and Bon Jovi are 4 of them :knuppel2: In my house my lady listens to country, my little girl listens to pop, my youngest boy listens to dubstep and even tries to make his own stuff and my oldest boy will at least throw a metal song out every now and then but he likes dubstep too........WHO ARE THESE KIDS ;D .....

I finally got into it a little last night/this early morning since I was off.  I'm just barely into the First Act, but I'm digging it quite a bit already.

The options for character creation are sufficiently robust that I spent over an hour on that alone; just reading the background & lore on the various races & classes is absorbing.  I can already tell that if one likes playing RPG's that tell a story, then this is definitely one you'll enjoy.

Thanks Martok - what you wrote above I basically posted verbatim about Dragon Age: Inquisition. So I think I'll dig PoE.

What I really have been looking for forever is an RPG that does cities well...massive Renaissance or medieval type cities. Magic and fantasy are ok to be in the mix too.

But a good RPG with quality urban environments in a classic era has always seemed to elude me. I was hoping for it in Skyrim 5 years ago but there were no cities...the settlements are barely towns.

Know what I'm saying?
Title: Re: Its Friday!
Post by: Sir Slash on March 08, 2016, 11:12:23 PM
PoE's cities aren't anything to write home about but functional and very pretty to look at. City rather than cities actually. But there is a couple of Drug Dens, one Bordello, and an Insane Asylum. And lots of attitudes that need adjusting.
