Hi, folks! I was directed to this forum by my cousin MetalDog, lured by the promise of a 5E D&D game, but it seems like a fun place to hang around, regardless.
I'm a forty-something banker in Sarasota, FL, with interests in history, literature, and most topics of a geeky nature. The geeky inclinations I blame on MetalDog, who introduced me to Tolkien and D&D in the early 80s, but I've never held it against him ;).
I may not be the most active of members, but I'm looking forward to participating.
Welcome, cousin of Metaldog! O0
Thanks! I used to hang out on a DC Comics fan fiction message board for many years, and really enjoyed the community aspect of it.
Welcome aboard, Idlewilder!
Thanks!
Welcome!
Hey Idlewilder- welcome aboard! Are you also a former Nutmeg Stater?

Yep, I'm from West Haven. MetalDog and I pretty much grew up together (but he's a year older and much better looking).

Maybe so, but I'm betting you've seen more classic movies than he has.

I don't know about movies, but my taste in fantasy lit is much better. I still break out in hives when he brings up Raymond Feist. :idiot2:

Donaldson let me down hardcore with The Last Chronicles. I'm disillusioned now, like Hemmingway in 1920s Paris. It's sad, really.

Forstchen might be a bridge too far for me... But I totally dig Turtledove.

I liked
Wizard's First Rule. Didn't read any of the rest, but, there it is. And Turtledove is really bad.

I actually only read his Misplaced Legion (or whatever) series decades ago, and rather liked it. Never read his alternate history stuff, but I understand it's well-respected.
The alternate history stuff is what people hate him for :)
Oh? Does he overly-employ dramatic license? Play fast and loose with historical detail?
Welcome Idlewilder. I'm about 50 miles east of you. I'll be glad to have another voice defending the great state of Florida's reputation from those unworthy of living amongst us here. ;D

Any friend of Dawg is a friend of mine! Welcome, brother.

I must have gotten the pun hate from my fathers side. What can I tell you?
Yes, Idlewilder. You got it right Man. I'm in the great metropolis of Arcadia, Fl. where if it's not a cow or an orange, it don't count. The wife and I usually spend our anniversary on Longboat Key and I have a niece that sells real estate in Sarasota. A very nice city when they're not working on the streets, which is pretty much... always.
How else are the snow birds supposed to get any where? ;)

Longboat is beautiful. We just discovered Euphemia Haye--- their desert loft is amazing!

Hygiene?
Hi Jean. How's your Hi-mean? Intact or otherwise? :2funny:
In defense of my beloved cousin's (admittedly somewhat odd) predilection, I'm sure someone in his camp must have already shared Samuel Johnson's assertion that puns are the lowest form of humor...?

Too many fifty cent words in there for some of these recalcitrant word manglers (starting with 'In"). Let me help...Puns dumb. No type them.

Yeah, too right. He was good as Morpheus in the Matrix though.
Right. And I loved him and Bruce Lee together in Rush Hour.
