Haven't played any other sailing sim but I was having a blast with this. Has only one ship (British Golden Hind) and no shot type selection yet. You wallow around, trying to judge shot distance. Have run into a rock and floundered (easy target). At first I thought it was an April Fool's joke but it's real.
I gave it a whirl. It's cool that they're trying something new but it was too arcadey for my tastes. Hopefully they'll add a sim version later down the road.
Just play naval action

It was actually a lot less arcadey than I expected. Sails furl and unfurl, it takes real timing to get your shots in as you roll with the waves. Ships heel over in turns. I saw that sails get damaged but I'm not sure how much it affects ship motion (I assume it does). I ran nose first into a rock and couldn't get off. I liked that there was no 'shoot now' color indicators like there is in the tank battles. If wind direction had been modeled (I'm assuming a 'realist' version will get made), people would have been abandoning it like crazy. For a first try, I was happy.

I have been. PvE server is pretty dead these days.

If they would let you play custom battles (PvP or PvE) without the need for grinding through the campaign, I guess they might get a bigger audience.
