Title: Mordheim-ARRRRRGGGGHHHH!!!
Post by: Silent Disapproval Robot on April 01, 2016, 11:38:44 PM
I must say it's been a long time since a game has kept me coming back to play more even after it's made my want to put my fist through the monitor.

Man, when things start to go badly, they do so in a big way.  I had my fury little band of murderous Skaven on quite a roll early on.  I'd managed to expand my group, level everyone up a few times, add some skills (there never seems to be enough money to train anyone), and even complete the first three story missions with hardly a loss.  Then I went on what was supposed to be an easy mission just to get some wyrdstones so I could sell them and train a few more guys.  A few lucky crits on the AI's side and my leader and best hero went down for the count.  The rest of my band routed.  In the aftermath, my leader and one of my henchmen were killed and nearly everyone else was wounded.  Treating their wounds ate up what little cash I had left.

I hired a new leader and sent the team out again to get some much needed cash.   This time, I had my best henchman and my hero knocked out.  Even though we won the battle, the AI managed to loot both of my men (rats?) when they were down and swipe their equipment.  The shop didn't have any replacements so I had to give the halberdier a dagger and the clawman a set of duelling pistols.  I had to waste more time and more money healing these guys and the big boss demanded 200 kg (or whatever the weight unit is) in stones.  I had only 3 days to gather it.  I sent my men out and was able to get 189 kg with one day left.  I selected what was supposed to be an easy mission and ran into a bunch of high level chaos thugs who ripped my gang to pieces.  My leader, my hero, and my magic user all died after repeatedly missing on 90% hit chances and then getting critted in return.  (this is what spurred the desire to engage in some the monitor punching.)   I have zero coin left and only one day to meet the boss's demands.  I think I'm well and truly buggered.    Two weeks of play down the tubes.  Time to start up a new band!

Seems like every review I've seen mentions the rage incitement from long streaks of missing 80+% hit chances in a row.   ;D

Must emulate my terrible dice rolling luck pretty well.

I want to start playing Mordheim soon but have only done a couple tutorial missions awhile back.  They were still patching it last I checked, so wasn't in a big hurry.

I was personally glad when... Geek I think?... started doing an occasional AAR on the game, so that I could abandon mine, since I was pretty sure we weren't going to get enough wyrdstone to make the cut and keep going.  :P :buck2:

A frustrating game, but still great.

Is there adjustable difficulty or is it just one size fits all?

Each mission has its own difficulty level displayed - I think the whole game has a generic level and then you're told 'this mission will kick your ass', 'be easy' blah blah

I need to get back to this - I have a dead Jason Pratt and a one armed gus but the band is still strong

Yeah, they rate each mission on a easy-deadly scale.  In addition, they show the relative strengths of the warbands as a numerical value prior to the start of the mission.

The rating system isn't really that reliable though as the enemies grow in power as you do so later in the game even an "easy" mission will have high level enemy heroes in it that can and will cut down your best troops in a turn or two.

Can you turn down the difficulty if a mission kicks your butt the first time?

you can spend some warpstone generating a new mission, but that might be just as hard - its a chance - in essence no

Nope.  It's part of the fun/challenge/frustration of the game.  No reloads and injuries and deaths are permanent.

New DLC released today.  The Witch Hunters adds a 5th faction to the game, complete with new campaign.

QuoteThis Warband adds the Witch Hunters, with 7 new unit types and a fully playable campaign featuring unique Dramatis Personae, High Capitular Wilhelm Krieger.

Amidst the rivalries and violence that splits the Empire, sinister forces creep back into the lands of men. Against these evils stand the Witch Hunters, remorseless warriors in service to the Temple of Sigmar. The witch practicing her fell magic, the mutant spreading its corruption of flesh, the necromancer violating the sanctity of the grave, the daemon seeking to possess souls – these are the foes of the Witch Hunter. The Witch Hunters will allow nothing to make them waver in their defence of mankind against these evils. They are the Templars of Sigmar, and with sword and fire they will return their god's justice to Mordheim.

Witch Hunter Captain
The leader of each band of Witch Hunters bears a commission from the Grand Theogonist himself, sanctioning whatever action the Captain deems necessary. Those entrusted with such authority are chosen for their unswerving faith and zeal, as well as their tactical acumen and swordsmanship. Any who dare oppose a Witch Hunter Captain will be summarily executed... with the Temple of Sigmar's blessing.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Crossbow Pistols
Set 2: Sword

Perks
Sigmar's Aegis: The warrior has a natural Magic resistance bonus of 20%.

Initial Skills
Hunter's Patience: After a successful Dodge attempt, reduces the cost of a Counter-Attack performed in response by 1 Offense Point.

Flagellant
Their minds unhinged by the conviction that the End Times are upon the Empire, Flagellants are fanatical madmen who wander the roads and byways of the provinces. They preach their apocalyptic visions wherever they go, scourging their own bodies with barbed whips and heavy chains in acts of ghastly self-mutilation. The crazed devotion that gives Flagellants purpose likewise makes them terrifying warriors in battle, hurling themselves upon foes in a frenzy of slashing flails. Many Flagellants have been swayed by the sermons of Witch Hunters, joining their warbands in a holy crusade to cleanse Mordheim and restore Sigmar's grace to the land.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Great Flail
Set 2: Nothing

Perks
No Talent: This unit cannot buy the 'Lad's got talent' skill.

Initial Skills
Fanaticism: Grants immunity to All Alone, Fear and Terror tests.

Witch Hunter
The grim Witch Hunters are renowned for their determination and courage even as they are infamous for their pitiless methods and merciless justice. Typically, these men work alone, travelling the villages and towns to root out Chaos cults and witches, but the scope of corruption infesting Mordheim has drawn packs of Witch Hunters to it, banding them together under the authority of Witch Hunter Captains.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Pistols
Set 2: Sword

Perks
Sigmar's Ward: The warrior has a natural Magic resistance bonus of 10%

Initial Skills
Purge the Heretic!: When dealing melee damage, increases melee damage by 20% for the next attack. The next action taken must be a melee attack or skill, or the effect is lost.

Zealots

Men who have suffered great losses, who had family and fortune taken from them, sometimes find that faith in Sigmar is all they have left. Casting aside the shambles of their old lives, they become Zealots - vengeful pilgrims on a quest to destroy the minions of Chaos wherever they can be found. Many Zealots were peasants or craftsmen, lacking the martial experience of mercenaries. They are, however, possessed by bitterness and rage. These are qualities that cause Witch Hunters to recruit them, harnessing their fanaticism to visit vengeance upon the evil infesting Mordheim.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Spear & Sword
Set 2: Nothing

Perks
None

Initial Skills
Vengeance: When receiving damage, increases Melee damage by 10% for 1 turn. Stackable.

Warrior Priest
Among the ranks of Sigmar's clergy, the Warrior Priests emphasize the martial aspects of their god. Filled with a fiery fervour and an unbreakable faith, these priests are a formidable sight to the enemies of the Empire. Wielding immense warhammers that can shatter skulls and crush bones, a Warrior Priest is an imposing foe. More than their physical strength, however, it is a Warrior Priest's devotion to Sigmar that endows him with his deadliest abilities – harnessing the divine power of his god and unleashing devastating forces against his adversaries.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Hammer & Shield
Set 2: Nothing

Perks
Divine Spellcaster: This unit has access to some spells from Sigmar's Prayers Tome.
Starts with the spell Immaculate Flesh, which removes all active Poison effects and increases Poison and Wyrdstone Resistance by 15%. Not stackable.

Initial Skills
Divine Rage: When dealing melee damage, increases the Spellcasting chance of the next spell by 15%. The next action taken must be a spell or the effect is lost.

Potiential Spells
Shield of faith: Increases Magic Resistance by 15%. Not Stackable.
Armour of Righteousness: Grants immunity to Fear and provokes Fear on engaged enemies. Increases Armour Absorption by 10%. Not Stackable.
Deny the Heretic: Creates a zone effect at the selected area. Entering or starting a turn inside the area inflicts a debuff that reduces current and maximum Offense Points by 1 and Melee Hit chance by 5% for 1 turn. Not Stackable.
Immaculate Flesh: Removes all active Poison effects and increases Poison and Wyrdstone Resistance by 15%. Not Stackable.
Word of Damnation: Reduces Magic Resistance by 10% and the chance to pass All Alone, Fear, and Terror tests by 25%. Not Stackable.
Soulfire: Deals 10-15 damage. Bypasses Armour Absorption.
Prayer of Absolution: Increases Armour Absorption by 5% and Dodge and Parry chance by 10%. Not Stackable.
Healing Hand: Restores up to 40 wounds.

Templar Knight
The younger children of noble lords or the disposed heirs of conquered domains, Templar Knights often seek a position for themselves by offering service to the temples of mankind's gods. Those who serve Sigmar usually end up in the warband of a Witch Hunter Captain, granted the chance to prove the sincerity of their faith by giving battle to the creatures of Chaos. Armed and armoured in finery befitting their noble birth, Templar Knights are nevertheless untested warriors and their lack of experience can make them overeager in combat.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Sword & Shield
Set 2: Nothing

Perks
Last Stand: This unit will never disengage or flee from melee battle, it will fight until the end. The unit is also coolheaded.
Fearless: Immune to All Alone, Fear and Terror

Initial Skills
Stoic: When engaged with 2 or more enemies, increases Melee Resistance by 10%. Not Stackable

Executioner
Few sights are more terrifying than that of seeing an Executioner approaching his victim. Selected for their massive physiques and utter remorselessness, these sinister warriors know neither pity nor mercy. Tasked to deliver final justice to the enemies of Sigmar, an Executioner becomes inured to killing, as ready to slay in cold blood as in the heat of battle. Great two-handed swords and double-headed axes are the weapons of choice for these killers, tools with which they become quite accomplished in the course of their gory trade.

Initial Weapon Set
Set 1: Great Axe
Set 2: Nothing

Perks
Fire Purge: Each melee attack has 25% chances to put the enemy on fire for 2 turns, the fire damage is taken at the beginning of its turn.
Fearless: Immune to All Alone, Fear and Terror
Last Stand: This unit will never disengage or flee from melee battle, it'll fight until the end
Tiring Immunity: Immune to tiring effects.

Initial Skills
Pyre of the Righteous: Places an effigy at a target location that can be destroyed by enemies. The effigy increases the chance to pass All Alone, Fear, Terror by 30%, and Melee and Ranged Hit chance by 10% for allies within 5 meters. Usable once every 2 turns. Not Stackable.

It's fun but insanely frustrating because you can progress very far into a campaign only to have a bad mission and then you're pretty much doomed.  You can try to progress but if you've lost your experienced, heavy hitters, you're just gonna die.

Oh well, time to start a witch hunter campaign!

Don't you get Warrior Priests with that group?

If they keep to the source material, those WPs should be able to melee & heal nearby friendlies while doing so.  Dunno how they have it working in Mordheim though.

You've got to build up enough reputation with the higher ups before you get access to those guys.  In the beginning you start out with one Witch Hunter and a bunch of rabble.  The flagellants are amusing but man do they suck.  I've re-started the campaign 4 times already after losing more guys than I could afford to replace. These hunters are seriously weak.  They seem to have all the vices of the other factions (glass jaws like the Skaven, no armour like Chaos, not much hitting power like the mercenaries, and low initiative like the Sigmar chicks) but don't really have any virtues.  I think they have higher morale but that just means they'll stay in a losing fight longer so more will get cut down and end up costing you money for treatment after which, they usually end up gimped in some way.

A bit surprised.. I figured the Witch Hunters would be Glass Cannons at the least.

I'm sure there will be plenty of player feedback about how bad they are, warranting some buffing, if this is the case.  The Solomon Kane-like witch hunters are an icon of Warhammer Fantasy.  The fans will go on the attack if they're not up to snuff.

Here's my newest attempt at a warband, The Sentinels of Purity.  The witch hunter and the templar knight aren't bad, but the zealots and the flagellant are useless.  Note the intelligence stat on the flagellant and the accuracy stats on the zealots.  These guys are retards!

Results after the very first mission?  Four out of five taken down by Skaven and an inglorious retreat.  One dead, one with megalomania, one with open wounds which lowers his stats permanently, and one with a concussion which lowers his awareness permanently.

Or are they just flesh shields the whole campaign?

It's a fun but frustrating game because you can play for days, make great progress and then have a run of bad luck in one mission and you're SOL.  The game basically runs in ironman mode so there's no saving and reloading.

They did a UI upgrade with the Witch Hunter DLC but it's getting mainly negative reviews because it makes seeing your selected unit on the overhead map really hard to spot.  They said they're going to revert back to the old map view soon.  I just bring this up as it'll likely be frustrating when you first start out.  I know it took me a while to decipher much of the game's symbology and learn to navigate the maps.

Which ones?

I hope I'm not jinxing myself but after the disastrous first run against the Skaven, the Sentinels of Purity have been on a bit of a tear.  I've had 4 successful missions in a row with only a single man injured, and that just a slight one.  Two of the missions were outstanding successes so I got a lot of extra xp and stat bonuses.

I've just hired a smuggler on to the warband to provide some ranged combat with her blunderbuss.  We'll see how she gets on.

I did jinx myself.  Very next mission was against the Sigmar chicks.  My band got randomly scattered across the map for setup and they all seemed to pop up right in front of a PMSing chick with a mace.  My band was routed with 4 knocked out.  Fortunately, none of the injuries were too bad but the chicks did nick most of my nice gear.

Bah.  The response was "We're sorry.  We'll look into it.  Abandon the battle, take the losses, and continue on."  I abandoned the battle even though I'd completed it and only had one of my guys knocked out.  If you abandon a battle, the game acts as though you'd had enough of your guys knocked out to break morale and then rolls their fate.  Three of my top tier guys died and both my ranged units lost an eye, thereby lowering their accuracy.  I deleted the campaign and now have to start over.

Ouch.

One thing a game featuring character permadeath needs is the least amount of game ravishing bugs possible, and to have the others fixed ASAP.

I love roguelikes but if my character's short & brutal life is ended due to a game bug, in one of them, I'd be end up rage quitting until further updates.  They're tough enough, as it is, without such problems.  :-\

One of the downsides to digital gaming, in cases such as these.   :buck2:

The fact that a Mordheim campaign can run for over ten hours of gameplay easily, doesn't help its rogue-ish aspects either.  :buck2:

Finally started putting some time in with Mordheim.

Damn is this addictive.

Haven't encountered any bugs (yet).  Hopefully that trend continues.

Just jumped straight in, after the tutorials, with the Possessed.  Crazy ass cultists!

Unfortunately, after a few days my Leader lost an arm.  No more 2-handed weapons for him.  But I'm impressed that such changes are portrayed on the 3D models.  Same for the Mutant Hero's mutations; even if they suck it's still cool to see how it mutates him.

After unlocking the first player level (that lends the bonus gold for new warbands) I'll probably start up a different faction.  Want to try Skaven, or maybe get the Witch Hunter DLC.  Dunno yet.

LOL....to each his own.  Two game descriptions that instantly turn off my interest are 1) permadeath and 2) rogue-like.

I always seem to get the worst criticals possible for each character.  In my current game, my Priest of Ulric specialised in two handed weapons and a few spells.  He lost his arm and took a concussion.  My heavy armour guy who specialised in weapon and shield fighting lost his shield arm.  My ranged chick lost an eye and a finger and now sucks at ranged combat.  My leader took brain damage and has to make an intel check each turn or he can't do anything but stand around and drool.

I've not really got into this yet and still working through the tutorials. I like the permadeath element and the injuries carried over. I am eager to get some real understanding enough to begin campaign. I think I will dust it off and get on with it this week.

I also tend to enjoy permadeath in roguelikes and these types of long-term roster management & strategy games.  Have owned the base game for quite awhile, but had been waiting for it to get out of EA and receive plenty of updates.

The number of tutorials may look pretty daunting at first, but the game really isn't all that difficult to understand.  There are quite a few different management screens, which is why there are so many tutorials.  Power through them, to get an idea what you can do on each screen, and you'll be rewarded with some fun.

I'd say this is very close to something like X-Com, with it's mix of tactical TBS and roster management.  Albeit more brutal & less forgiving - because Warhammer boardgames just are.  >:D

Permadeath makes me much more cautious and consider detail in order to preserve 'lives'. It adds a certain edge to the game.

I was going to compare this to X-Com as well, except in X-Com you aren't sending veterans into combat in various stages of dismemberment.  :o

Playing around with this....trying to figure out how everything works.  Atmosphere seems good, might be something I ultimately purchase if things turn out well this weekend.

As previous folks warned, this game is brutally hard.....I can't even win during the tutorials:)  The difficulty might be the main thing to keep me from investing because from what I see of everything else, I am liking it.  Graphics are decent, customization is decent, music is good, and like the concept of leading a group around on missions.  But wow, I get destroyed all the time.  Just when I start winning a fight, 2 or 3 other enemy backup show up and quickly dispose of my people.

Really?

It hasn't been all that difficult for me.  Yet.

While I often have 1 or 2 guys take a fall every mission, they usually recover afterward.  Or are out of action for 3-5 days.  A pretty rare maiming (had it happen once in about a dozen mission).

I've had to pull out early one time when some pretty beefy enemy heroes got too much of a jump on me.  But it wasn't too bad.

Over time, it's obvious that some characters will get mangle or killed, but it's been fewer than I had expected going in.  Just gotta keep your team together (use manual setup), move as group, and focus down vulnerable enemies ASAP.  Positioning and reactive or defensive abilities can help the enemy charging at you.

If you can keep your team together, it's fairly easy to complete the objectives without loss.  It's the missions where your team starts spread out over 3 locations on the map where you run into trouble. The AI will rush the smallest group and overwhelm your guys before you can consolidate.

Yeah, you're first job is to try and get everyone into a single mob

After I posted, actually won (3) straight missions so maybe things turning around...I was able to attack with multiple people and for the most part stay away from being attacked in groups.  Strongly considering making the purchase...

Yeah, the first few missions are tough because your warband is so small.  Once you get a full band going, it gets easier to gang up on someone and beat them down.  One on one fights are for suckers!

Can't argue that:)  Quantity sure does help.  Question to players who have played a long time.....does it get repetitive for you?  Although I am liking the game play, starting to feel that each mission is generally the same.  I am way early in the game so that could be it, but just wondering if it keeps your attention for a long time.

Until now I have been splitting the team up and have been destroyed every time. Following recent advice here I kept them grouped and have won my FIRST battle..haha...I decimated the opposition and only two warriors hospitalised. (I gotta pay their medicall bills! How can that be right?) ;)

I can see the missions getting rather repetitive after awhile.  I'd expect some of the extra troop type unlocks, and maybe new equipment showing up, would help at some points.  But I've not played it long enough to unlock much in the way of the Warband Ranks to experience the added variety yet.

I've been looking at it more like running the gauntlet, to see how long I can make it.  Or, at least, how long my original Leader character will continue breathing.

One inherent game feature that makes each mission somewhat balanced also makes it feel more repetitive.  The enemy warband consists of exactly the same number and character categories ("Hero", etc).  The only difference in opposing warband makeup is the overall point value (aka level-ups) and specific set of classes from the specific faction you're up against in a mission.

I'd say it's similar to X-Com missions getting repetitive, but there is less equipment variety and you'll always know just how many enemies, and generally what type, are opposing you.  So enemy forces are less of a mystery in Mordheim missions.   On the other hand, the long term meta-game has some interesting stuff, such as the aforementioned maiming of characters, to push an occasional tough decision on you.  Being forced to take your highly experienced but one-armed, or crazed from a head wound, soldier into battle or kick him out of your band and replace with a noob that costs money to hire.  Maybe the odd handicapped combatant will keep things a bit fresh.. I dunno.

Along with the skill/ability customization available for each of your characters, Mordheim seems more focused on the long meta-game.

There are story based missions to break up the random ones and they're a lot more intricate and involved.

The missions can get a bit repetitive but as you progress, they get a lot deadlier once the really nasty hero types start showing up.  They're also a bit more tense because it really, really sucks to lose a top tier guy in your band, especially if you don't have the cash (you won't) to hire a decent replacement instead of a level 0 shrub.

Did anyone buy this during the sale and not enjoy it?  I mean, not enjoy it enough to, say, gift it or trade it away? :)
PM me if you're interested.

I ended up not buying...it was a decent and interesting game, but towards the end felt repetitive...but I could see myself picking it up someday in the future.

If I didn't like the setting, I probably would've waited longer too.  Think I got it on a dirt cheap Xmas sale or something, though, so it didn't hurt the wallet much at the time.

I think of this game much like I do Blood Bowl.  Of course, it came from the same boardgame pedigree so that's not surprising.  The problem with these games is the huge need for as many factions & troops types as you can get.  Makes a big impact on reducing repetitiveness, more so than some other PC game genres.  Unfortunately, Mordheim has only... 4 or 5 factions available right now and the troop selection for each isn't terribly extensive.

I'd like to see someone port Frostgrave (http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/177354/frostgrave) over to a digital game.  Generally similar to Mordheim but the campaign, and focus on your wizard characters' customization, could be more interesting for the long run.

New DLC is out today.

Undead warbands.

That's some classic vampire action right there.  I really hope someone makes a Scooby Doo mod to fight them.

Base game is still $40 on steam, have you found it cheap elsewhere?  If so where and how much?  Thanks

Must have been a temporary screw up by Steam.  The base game was listed as the same price as the DLC earlier.

On disc DLC apparently tho. I've had a number of really large updates, including the other day for release, and hadn't bought any of the DLC until tonight a minute ago when I batched them all (glad to support the devs, just hadn't gotten around to it). Nothing new needed to be downloaded.  ::) :P
