That game has one of the most gorgeous maps I've ever seen, too

Those are nice maps...and an expensive game!

I had this game back in 199...4 ish.

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/8976/world-war-ii-pacific-theater-operations

I've still got the counters all punched and in trays in the original box upstairs in the loft...but I lost the map years ago when we moved.

I don't think I really knew what I was buying back in the day!  :2funny:

HotF is nice.  I've played the original Ring of Hills, but not the new one.

Now Lock N Load is under new management since the first LnL games came out are the new games any different to the old games that came out under Mark Walker? As Mark was the designer of the LnL games I was wondering if the newer games where still using Marks rule set?

I've only played the PC Stalingrad game and I hated the spotting mechanic which I presume is the same as used in the board games? The spotting mechanic would work fine for the Jungles of Vietnam but I don't think it worked well at all in the urban combat of Stalingrad.

A game that LockNLoad sells which is designed by Two Hour Wargames is Nuts! which I hope and pray gets a digital conversion.

The system rules are available on LnLs site to review and there is a print and play demo I believe. Either one should answer the question.

You can order a printed demo of the modern system for the cost of shipping.

It's the same system.  It's been openly discussed / described as the same system.  There's been some rules clarifications / cleanups, but no real rules changes.

Yes, the spotting mechanic is still there.  It's a key part of the LNLT system.  Always has been; always will be.

How so? How is trying to spot a squad in cover in this:

any different to trying to spot one in this:

Looks like it, I think it might be from the new Russian Stalingrad movie. I just google imaged "Stalingrad". It's a good representation of the urban combat scape though.

edit: the white van on the right hand side gives it away  ;D

Looks familiar. Played that map to death in Red Ochestra 2.

Pinetree.. the spotting mechanic means you can't recon by fire, a core tactic used by the Germans during the combat in Stalingrad. So it isn't the fact it's hard to spot but that you can't fire at a hex you previously spotted the enemy in nor target a hex you suspect the enemy is in.

Oh well seems your point missed the mark:) Some days people make it easy for you..

I do get the hint I'm not really wanted or welcome here no matter what people say. I wont say anymore than that.

Ah, Ok. I understand now. In the PC game you have FOW units that only show up when they fire or move into LOS. This is a bit different to the board game where you, as the player, can see all the units all the time. This is where the spotting mechanic works well imo. As for recon by fire or firing at unspotted units, you could always house rule it.

An example would be: You could fire on an unspotted unit but would pay a penalty where you're only using half fire power as you're firing at the hex, not the unit. If the attacker wins, the defender makes a MC with the difference being the modifier. If they pass, the unit is unspotted or they have the option of immediately opfiring on the attacker. If they fail the MC they're automatically spotted and if they fail by 1, they immediately opfire at the attacker, if they fail by 2-3, they're shaken, if they fail by 4 or more, they take a step loss. (Those numbers are all arbitrary btw, you'd have to test it to get the correct range).

So you can see, it's doable, but it still seems a bit gamey to me, since as the player, you know where units are so recon by fire is irrevelant.

In the Warfighter series, the recon-by-fire mechanic was that you got to shoot blind into a hex.  If you scored a hit, it revealed what was in the hex, but did no damage.  After that, anyone on the same radio net (if using the radio rules) knew where the target was that turn and could fire, otherwise, you had to wait a turn to shoot at them.
