Mafia III is up for pre-order ;D though it's not released until October 7th :'(.
Given the original and the follow up, this was an absolute no brainer for me. I have over 200 hours on Mafia II which I completed twice I believe and I played through the first one about 3 times.
I have no idea what this will offer - but the two previous games actually "put you there". I don't think I've ever played any other games that gave so much immersion.
It will be a purchase for me as well...not sure that I will pre order this early though.
i read it wasnt from the same developer and something about it been open play akin to GTA but i may be wrong
on a side note i play jazz and blues in the restaurant and maybe 3 or 4 songs used for driving round town on the original Mafia - took me straight back
I apparently picked up Mafia 2 (with all the DLC) some time ago on sale. Is there any point playing Mafia 1?

You need to add some black metal to the playlist to attract the more discerning customer. ;)

Absolutley and you should play it before Mafia II. Quite apart from a specific link in between the second and the first, it's bloody superb.

I did read the product page and it did sound a bit like that...specifically

Although I don't think it can be bought and downloaded anymore.....pretty sure you have to find a physical copy at amazon or something like that.

Well done, Grim. I have a copy of the original Mafia bundled with a copy of Mario Puzo's Godfather lying around my gaming dungeon somewhere...didn't crack either one open.

Wow and I thought I was a game collecting whore. I can think of some steam games I have 0 minutes on, but most of those are bundle buys of games I didn't have much interest in the first place.
In the same section of my dungeon, next to Mafia, I have a copy of Emperor of the Fading Suns :)
Well, technically Mafia 2 isn't for sale anymore either, due to some kind of copyright expiration on various art and music (or that's the guess). But it got a significant update recently, and current speculation is that a deal has been made to eliminate the copyright violation issues in order to make the first two games re-available in time for Maf3.
Almost forgot about this one...releases next Friday......might be another pre order looming for me:)
What the heck, I failed again to hold off...went ahead and pre ordered.....pre download has started (40GB), should be ready in ample time for the release on Friday......finally a game releases on a Friday so people can play over the weekend and in this case it's actually a 4-day weekend for me!
You can blame me for this one too then :P
Yep, you are going to owe me a lot of money:) But at least with F1 so far, you might be off the hook....Mafia 3 is a little bit of a mystery because of media embargo, but what the heck...I get to kill and destroy things, what can go wrong with that:)

Media embargo? Normally that throws me a warning sign - but there's a stack of videos on Youtube...probably in total adding up to the entire game
Given the two previous iterations, I seriously hope they haven't screwed this up. As long as they capture the era and there's a good story, I'll be happy

Seems like most people think the embargo was because they didn't want to spoil the story, but who knows... I have watched a lot of the videos and seems pretty fun to me...it is a different developer so who knows, willing to take a risk. I'll never finish it anyway, so as long as I get some fun out of it, ok by me:)

I hope that not just wishful thinking.
So they say:). If you notice in the videos released a number of the people state they couldn't show anything from the first 2 hours and such , which may support the fact they were trying to keep the story under wraps. But for me doesn't matter since I have purchased and downloaded so just waiting for release day now:)
The few videos I've seen so far (1) come with glowing recommendations; (2) definitely lean toward explicitly trying not to spoil the story.
So the story embargo sounds like it has weight.
Hoping so since I bought it:)

How "Unplayable" the game is for them because their FPS counter doesn't show a number higher than 30.

Sorry - I was about to delete that. 'Don't shoot the messenger' and all that.
I'll see for myself tonight....but I had no grand illusions that it would be game of the year material, kind of assumed it would generally be like other games of this type, lots of senseless action with a good mafia story which I happen to enjoy. Sometimes nice playing a game just for fun without over thinking how deep and realistic it is.
But I won't know for sure until I get a crack at it later, going to be a long day.....

Cats are fickle ;D
Well I'm 3 hours in and I'm loving it.
Story is great. Animations are great. Facial expressions, speech...Gameplay is what gameplay was in previous ones so no issues with that yet either.
The previous Mafia games, for me, have been about immersion and story.
I would take this chance to let you know that there's lots of cut scenes and they are pretty lengthy in places - but stay with them - they are great and key to the story. Don't do what I did and not take note - I lost who was who in places.
Car handling is like the previous two - which is ok...I eventually got used to how they handled and I will do here.
Graphics - I haven't managed to nail them down yet. It's a bit dark for me in places at times and also there's a lot of "bloom" - so I need to meddle. But otherwise, top notch. I have no idea what the issue with 30fps is about. It's running at 30fps on my system and looks and plays great.
So far this is hitting the spot.
Oh...and the music is fantastic
Finally home! Time to give this thing a go....
Just started it up....you definitely can tell its a console port, not necessarily a good or bad thing, just very obvious. Although graphics not out of this world, certainly good enough....music is real nice and so far the story is interesting to follow, but haven't gotten far. One thing I notice is all the drivers don't follow the rules of the road very well....have people in a turn right only lane going straight, people turning left in front of me when I am going straight, etc....its the wild west when driving:)
So far so good....really liking the story and atmosphere. Got into my first big shootout, very satisfying, lots of killing:) I have had my controls get stuck here and there, nothing major but hopefully gets cleaned up a bit. Developer is supposed to have patch this weekend to also address the low FPS for those that care.
I'm getting a feeling this is more akin to Saints Row - what about you GR?
Open world with a few places to go in, baddies here and there as you go around the city, the city take over thing, calling your help in...all with a Mafia story.
Not a bad thing as Saints Row was a bloody fun game.
I will say this - and I don't think it gives too much away - one of the first things you do is stand in a soup kitchen handing out soup to people - which was as boring and shitty a task as the one where you're handing out cigarettes in Mafia II - and I thought "Yep - this is Mafia"....it seems it can't be a Mafia game without a shite mission in it. That was the only rubbish thing I came across and it did make me wonder if the dev had put it in as an homage :2funny:
The facial expressions and textures are superb as is the story.
Well I played it for 6 hours yesterday and it was great fun. I'll see what the next 6 hours brings.

Interestingly enough, never really have played Saints Row, do have SR4 from some free promotion but looking at my Steam account only played 15 minutes:)
I really like the driving aspect, not too hard to control and just feels right, except for the other cars on the road not necessarily obeying the road laws:)
Really enjoying what I have seen so but I am purposely holding back a bit since I would like to really wait until 1st patch released comes out this weekend, although I haven't seen anything game breaking.....when I did the soup kitchen bit, I was thinking to myself, are they really going to make me hand out soup...and of course it did. So far, glad I purchased and from what I have seen so far, this likely will be one of the few games I actually complete.
I can't remember if you mentioned GR - but did you play and complete the previous 2?
There are links between those (1 & 2) and they are absolutely superb.
Only played version 2....I wasn't into the series when the first version came out and don't think it was readily available by the time I did.
There was a very cool link between 1 & 2 which I won't give away in case you ever get it.
The graphics are dated, but the music, gameplay and story override that issue ten fold - and that's coming from someone who hates going back to old games - good or bad - because the graphics are so poor.
I would easily fire up Mafia 1 again if I had the time. It's a superb game.
In fact...... >:D

Main problem was couldn't find it for download anymore.....think saw on ebay/amazon for physical copy, but can't recall the last physical copy of anything I have bought:)
Saw post saying developers will have 1st patch posted by tonight (pacific time)....this includes the FPS fix, not sure what else might come with it....
Patch out
Savaged by rps - hope you guys are enjoying it
Its a good thing that often my tastes go against reviewers:) Don't get me wrong, this is not game of the year material and the graphics as I mentioned earlier are certainly not the same standards as other games, but I am still enjoying the heck out of it. The AI may or may not be good, but I am not very good at these games so I likely wouldn't even be able to tell, in fact there already have been a number of missions where it took me many times to complete because of the AI getting me. For me my expectations weren't through the roof, never expected it to be perfect and I knew it would roughly be like other games, but with a good story on a topic (Mafia) that I enjoy. If you have different expectations and not interested in this type of story, then people should absolutely wait until there is a sale.
One mans wine is another mans poison.
It seems to borrow from other games - other good games to be fair.
I mentioned earlier that there's a bit of Saints Row in there and that's because as you go around, some red icons show which are "bad guys" and they are either on their "home turf" or aggravating someone....Saints Row definitely had the home turf gangs dotted around - though in this game taking them out doesn't make you the owner (at least, not yet).
Another example, is Junction Boxes. I've been running around and collecting electronic circuits. Hadn't got a clue what they were for or why I was collecting them. I then noticed somewhere an instruction to "tap in" to the area. I went looking and sure enough you use those electronic junction boxes to tap into the area and it seems they reveal things in the area - much the way the towers did in Far Cry 3 and 4.
Those are not bad things because they are both very good games but make no mistake - if you play this and you've played other FPS games in the last 5 years, you'll spot some similar mechanics.
I was playing the original Mafia last night (what a stonkingly good, atmospheric game) and you know what - it wasn't ground breaking in gameplay. It was set in the 30s. The music wasn't as diverse as in II or III, but it still really delved you into the era. Mafia II took it from the 30's to the 50s and added radio which gave an superb soundtrack.
There are some bugs to...I've had 3 CTDs, I've seen a floating shopping basket, there's a funny look to the vehicles - in fact, there's something about the graphics that make it look odd at times and I've messed around with the settings and can't seem to get rid of that "odd" look.
One other thing....WORK OUT THE KEYS before you patch. I just got used to the keys and then they went and changed them!
All that said - what makes the Mafia games for me is huge sprawling cities with great fantastic stories, superb soundtracks and incredible immersion in the era and so far, so good.

I may not have fully paid attention so far (mostly been playing to try things out), but whatever has been included has not distracted me from the main story line...the game certainly uses colorful language, talks about how certain races not welcome in places, and has some nudity, but don't recall much anti-war stuff...they certainly reference the war a bit, but seemed more about "what was it like over there"...I am going to be restarting since my first start up was just getting use to things, now I plan to fully pay attention to things.

Good point, I am the only PC player on my computer so don't have those conflicts....

Just tell me one thing...does the game try to be edgy and relevant by forcing upon the player a story laden with issues involving racial discrimination and cynical anti-war dogma?
lol - that sounds too deep for me.
Certainly the police "awareness" level goes up as you go by. Also, I've been asked to leave an establishment (can't remember if it was a café or not).
But I genuinely don't know if there's any agenda there. The warning at the beginning of the game says it wants to accurately display the attitudes of the time - I haven't picked up too much on it in game apart from the police thing.
I don't recall anything anti-war thus far
By the way - I wanted to "live the Mafia experience" again and so restarted Mafia I - and I'm half way through it.
A word of warning for anyone wanting to go back to this amazing game. Whilst it
is amazing, it's also very frustrating in places. Two examples are
- No difficulty setting - what you get is what you play
- Terrible waypoint saves
Example - I had 5 health left and died - the game took me back to the last save which was where I was at the door with 5 health left - it was always going to go south everytime so I had to go back to another save
But those aside - the game is bloody fantastic.

Wish I could, but since not available anymore besides through ebay and such, likely won't happen....just too lazy for physical game shipments:)

My issue is that the game fails to realistically capture the severity and ubiquity of racism at the time.09/10/2016 at 12:19 Bum Candy says:
I'm not really sure how you can make it any clearer. It was clear from the article anyway. The use of racial epithets being exclusive to the bad guys plays down the racial element and makes it seem like it was exclusive to bad people and not endemic in the society as a whole. 09/10/2016 at 20:00 pepperfez says:
I think the problem some people are having is that they really believe racism is the exclusive province of cartoon villains. Certainly not something that decent upstanding people like them could be guilty of, anyway.09/10/2016 at 18:57 TheRealHankHill says:
So you want 3 podunk back woods Klansmen to decapitate some poor young black man after dragging him behind their truck for miles just to be "accurate?" Theres no way to "accurately" represent racism in a video game. You would have to make an entire game solely based on racism, and even then you wouldn't even have scratched the surface. Y'all haven't actually EXPERIENCED these issues in these areas, lots of us have. Including that stuff in a game not about it would feel like it is cheapening the situation to me, having some southern belle calling a man negro boy or n1gger is less ham fisted. They cant help themselves, it started last night as a review in progress with 20 comments about gameplay, it now has a further 201 comments about misrepresented black females - i know im taking the far less intellectual route, but for fucks sake, play a game, shoot people and drive cars you moaning asshats
This stuff just must be over my head since not at all while playing the game did I stop and think about any if this....simply was playing a game

Certainly getting destroyed in reviews....55 from reviewers and 3.1 from gamers.
http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/mafia-iii
I decided to restart over so I could really pay attention to things and just had a really good time completing one of the missions....I won't spoil things, but it is a mission that happens in a swamp and you basically have to clear a camp of bad guys. First time I played through, I was Rambo and just shot up the camp...it was pure chaos. However this time through, I went super stealth...cleared the camp largely without firing a shot, really was nice sneaking around and taking out each person. Also saw something funny....after I disposed of the guards, I moved their body and threw into the swamp to conceal them....all of a sudden heard some thrashing behind me, turned around and an alligator was having fun eating the body!
Still having a good time, regardless of what the reviews say, but of course way early....
Yeah - the Haitians. Good mission. I started low key and went loud when I was spotted.
I wondered what the water noises were around me when I threw a body in...I thought it was some physics glitch where the body was turning around in the water...couldn't find the body. Next one I threw in, I stayed and watched and I saw these red eyes coming towards me and then the body being dragged away by a big MF croc.
I'm quite enjoying the game at the moment.
Also, LoL at collecting PB magazines and having some of their pics (the not-full-nudity ones).

Yep, fun stuff.....I really enjoyed being stealth this time around and glad to see multiple ways to comp, eye missions. This time looking around for collectibles and trying to fully take in the experience...good stuff.
Now I've played some and went a read/watched a few reviews, I honestly can't criticise the reviews. I think they're spot on with a couple of things...specifically
- Sub par graphics
- Very limited open world - it's annoying there are so many buildings and they're almost all closed
I'm not far enough to agree with mediocre, repetitive and boring missions.
However - again, Mafia is about the story and how it's told and for that, I still have to give it top marks...so far.
^Graphics ain't all that bad.
People are just exaggerating, mostly because of the FPS lock that was in the original release (pre-patches).
No - the graphics are quite bad :)

What are you playing the game on?
I might not be such a modern day graphics ho', but I still care somewhat about graphics, and this game looks fine.
For me they are perfectly fine, but likely not at the same level as some other recent modern games. But has not factored in at all in my satisfaction of the game.
Angry Joe and... his... um... .... hot Russian blonde girl/friend? :o (To quote the top comment from his YT channel on that video, "Did I miss something?!")
Anyway, they pointed out that the skybox for Mafia3 looks almost exactly like the skybox for
Legend of Zelda: the Ocarina of Time on the N64. :2funny:
The full Angry Joe review is finally up.
The intro captures perfectly what the AJ team liked and disliked about the game. I admit I lol'd a lot harder than I should have at Other Joe's demise -- well played, AJ team. :smiley6600:

PC
Look - if they look good for you cool - more power to you. I think they're pretty poor.
Sure - there's lots going on. There's lots of buildings and textures. The cut scenes are outstanding as are other characters.
However, there's way too much bloom, way too much lighting, car textures are flat and bland with light bouncing off them like you wouldn't believe.
I have been in the settings and I've messed about with all of the options to try and get rid of whatever the heck it is - but it's not going anywhere.
This is an example of the bloom and lighting
No option I have turned down gets rid of it. Also things have a blurry look about them...not crisp at all and there's a glowing "outline" around cars in certain light conditions. Also, as I said, cars are pretty flat looking. There's no depth there.
Sorry - but they are quite clearly not optimised for PC.
It's not a game breaker - but it's not ideal either.
*Edit*
Actually, going back to Mafia II, the graphics are pretty similar - especially the car "look" - pretty flat. However, the rest of the game graphics don't have this blurry, bloom effect on them - AND that
was 6 years ago.
As I said - not a game breaker and I'll not be drawn into further discussion about it because - well - it was worth a mention, nothing more.
Enjoy - I will.

That seems like a fair review.
As mentioned, I'm not far enough in to notice the repetitive gameplay - but it seemed to be explained well enough by AJ. He says after the first few opening hours - which is about where I am I guess.
Nothing wrong with everyone having different opinions, that's why we all share our information with each other
Meanwhile, in completely unrelated news, it seems like the hoped-for fix for The Saboteur running on computers with more than 4 cores, has hit a brick wall. No ETA on resolution. Guess I'm going to refund. Oh well -- it still runs on my PS3, I just can't share the glory with mah groggies... :P :'(
New patch released tonight.....
UPDATE 10/14: We just rolled out a hotfix on PC that addresses blurry rendering for some players, and other stability improvements. We're still working on more fixes for Mafia III and will share more details in the coming week. Thanks for the feedback!
Finally made it back to the place in the game where I decided to restart after the patch, basically where things are supposed to open up.....I'll say one thing, I don't think I can replay the beginning again, it takes quite awhile and pretty scripted as one would expect as you learn the game....so hopefully I don't encounter any big issues going forward, I am just going to slug it out from here and no more restarts.
I've almost finished Mafia I. What a bloody good game. Seriously good fun with pertinent missions making you feel like you joined the mob and with a fantastic story. O0
Pity the auto saves are so, SO bad.

Gotcha thanks.....making a lot of progress in Mafia 3, won't say any spoilers but pretty cool setting within an Amusement Park...had a ton of fun on that one!

Found a cheap copy on Amazon, went ahead and bought....interesting to see it in action
Make sure you pay attention to the story and do the little side missions. It's all integral to the enjoyment.
Oh...and as for the save points, I'm afraid you'll have to suck it up. They are mostly terrible. Example...I'm on the final mission and I'm working my way through it to only get to a cut scene, for immediately after ('cos I only have 5 health left) and I go straight back to the beginning. I've been at the beginning of this mission 6 or 7 times now.
But...get over that and just rage quit now and again and you'll have a great experience

Thanks for heads up, I'll keep in mind....seems like it will be a week or so before its delivered, so will be a bit before I can try it.
Mafia 1 has arrived in the mail....will be adding to my ever growing list to play:)
I'm so glad I went back to Mafia I and Mafia II.
The immersion in both of those titles is what makes them. It may help with Mafia III - temper my expectations to what I loved about the other two.
For example, one of the things I noticed right away about Mafia III was the lack of places to go. Going back to Mafia I and Mafia II made me realise these games were just like that. So why would I feel disappointed about not being able to walk into other buildings in 3? Probably games like GTA V...bigger, grander open world games.
But again - Mafia I and II didn't have that either. What they did have was a fantastic story and superb detail in the area and the timeline.
When I fired up Mafia III - I noticed it had that. A great story and fantastic attention to detail for the time.
However - what Mafia I and Mafia II had also was a sense of being involved with the Mafia. Apparently, that's not in Mafia III...it's just about a guy getting revenge. Will that matter? I don't know. Perhaps the story will be engaging enough that it's not the fact that your character is a member of the Mafia in 1 and II - but will be engaging enough in itself that he's out for revenge against the Mafia family that interfered in his life.
Here's hoping. Currently, I'm working through Mafia II and enjoying it immensely.
Although I have taken a break from M3, I really was enjoying it for what it was. Still no regrets and will complete the game, when all these other shiny new toys stop coming out:)
.

Well I originally posted a link to the Zero Punctuation review of Mafia III, but a lot of people over at YouTube were deeply offended by it, so I didn't fancy bringing that over here...
