That pic was staged. Yes, the construction workers were really out on a girder like that, but it's not really how they ate lunch on a typical day.

Staged or not, I wouldn't have been out there on that girder.
My daughter and me discussed that earlier tonight. We agreed that we would already have to be a corpse in order to get either one of us up there.
An uncle-in-law worked on the construction of the John Hancock Building in Boston.
He had no trouble working at hundreds of feet above ground on a girder structure, but he hated going up on his house roof.
As he explained it, up that high on the girders, the perspective was so distant that it seemed like a television screen.
On a house roof, you could see the sidewalk clearly, the bushes, and realise that a fall could kill you.
Situational Awareness?
I have that picture !!! I saw it in a restaurant once and thought , wow , I have to find that ......and have it !! There is absolutely no way in hell you'd get me up that high , my balcony freaks me out sometimes , and that probably isn't anymore than an 8 foot drop :o. And I bet those flasks they have didn't have tea in them either , probably a good old swig of whiskey from the homeland !!!
If you think eating lunch was hard, you should've seen what you had to do for a bathroom break. :idiot2:

Sitting up there is bad enough, but couldn't even more imagine what it took to walk to that spot and then sit...then later stand up. Never in a million years.
A gentle breeze could ruin your whole day.
You didn't have to drink on the job to work in construction back then, but it sure helped.
