What, no jet packs or autonomous deployables? That's not the WWI I read about.

I like the name too, as if the execs at MS gave it some real thought.

The crux of this game is the protagonist staring down the Zeppelin, from ground level.

You guys can make jokes about it all you want, but this game is going on my harddrive the minute it gets released. I have a tight group of BF friends and we are all very excited for this next BF!

More destruction, cavalry, tri-planes, artillerie, shovels and bayonets! What's not to like?

The name is pretty lame though, I'll give you that . :)

WW 1 on steroids  ( and a good dose of LSD too it seems ;-) )

Why not could be fun :)

...were for every 3 soldiers you got one biplane and one tank also on the map.
More important to me is that there is a good balance of lethality versus gameplay-needs  ...or at least a 'hardcore modus', where a headshot is a headshot and at least 2-3 shots are deadly.
I hate it when i put a full belt from a 08/15 into a guy's face from close range and then he still stabs me with his bayonet

This was never the case in BF.
A headshot is lethal.

But it has never been a milsim either. :)

FatherTed: I don't think so. PC release is 21st Oct with the 18th on early access.
Only between the console versions XBox One has a deal where specific content will be available on XBox One only for a set time before it comes to PS4.
Same with Destiny the other way around.

Even though I am not expecting anything realistic and historic from an AAA game but just pure fun arcade action, the gameplay video made me yawn many times, just like watching one of Micheal Bay's movie on the plane to try to get some sleep.

I haven't been expecting realistic shooter but the gameplay doesn't resemble WW1 at all. They just put WW1 skins and made few tweaks. They didn't put much effort into it. I'm not surprised though.

They have done better than that by having open beta and released for early access which allows people to play up until 10 hrs if you belong to ea's littke club :)

Not sure if any full reviews done yet, just seems like a number of positive vibes.  Likely not a day one purchase for me unless I find really cheap which isn't likely anytime soon.

Plus still playing mafia 3 which I am enjoying the heck out of regardless of reviews and such.

This follows from an avid BF fan, but I have played early access for several hours now and I am blown away (pun intended)! :D
The game looks absolutely gorgeous and the WW1 vibe is very much present with a subdued colour palette and great audio / visual experience. The combat is grim and violent and the combat is slightly more realistic with the absence of big HUD markers for targets spotted.
Its easy to miss a guy making good use of cover.

The new Operations game mode is a mix between the smaller Rush and big Conquest mode. The map is divided into sectors and every phase plays out in one of those sectors.

I haven't seen much SP yet, but what I have seen so far is a heavy story with high quality cutscenes to make an interesting narrative. You play as several people in the campaign and it tries to show you the grim reality of WW1 combat, but also asks a few questions about morality (at least it does so in the opening mission). If they continue this throughout the campaign it will be the strongest SP Battlefield experience of any game of the series. Very much looking forward to playing further.

In MP it shinies truely of course. Dynamic Weather on each map, Destruction mechanics even more impressive yet again and weapons feel like the cumbersome old models of the Era, but gunplay is tight and rewarding no less.

Only one SP mission (or 'War Story') left.
So for those who are looking to buy BF1 for SP only; wait until a sale.  O0 The SP part is VERY high quality, each War Story is like a seperate movie with intense gameplay, superb voice acting and great cutscenes, but... It's far too short to warrant full price for SP only. You can get it done in under 8 hours. Only if you want to start collecting the the collectibles you might go up to double or so.
With any BF game the meat is in the multiplayer part of the game and even though this time the SP is truely awesome, its certainly not enough to warrant paying full price for SP only.

BTW, sorry for the off topic but I didn't know Titanfall 2 had a SP campaign...hopefully it is a bit meatier than BF1's.

I have the first 2hours of MP in the game, and it feels good so far :)

very atmospheric, graphics are stunning ....hollywood WW1 war movie with strewn in fantasy elements kind of style
I played on 3 maps and they seem to be large enuf, and the killing-mechanic /gun play seems to have found a good balance to be fun for some old chap from the "BF1942 enjoying time period"
Not to much arcade like in for example The Division (i hate it when you can release a full mag into the face of an opponent from 5m and he just shrug it off...)

i made a pass on BF4 and because i was already unhappy with BF3 ...the last FPS i had played extensively was BFBC2 and COD4 (Ahh, those were the days with the now-Grogheads community :) ....) before

I'm thinking of taking the plunge and purchasing BF1. Anyone got any more time in MP? How are you're chances of staying alive for very long? Which mode is best for a better chance of survival?

Title: Re: Battlefield 1 from EA - First World War FPS
Post by: Yskonyn on October 26, 2016, 07:25:44 AM
I have been busy playing, not posting about it.  :P

It's a more realistic approach to the Battlefield concepy, IMO, so your chances of staying alive are a little better if you make good use of cover and play controlled. The uniforms blend in nicely with the surroundings and the spot markers are temporary and fade quite quickly.
There is a flare gun for the Sniper which shows incoming enemies on the minimap for a while, but it doesn't mark them as spotted on your HUD.

But that said, controlled play has always been the best way to play any BF game. All too often I see guys holding the sprint button all the time, rushing into known hot zones. That will get you killed fast, in any BF game.

Besides, the game is all about brutal combat, so you life expectancy is very short in any case. That's part of the deal here. :)

Yeah the SP is short. You can play through it in about 8 hours. If you want to hunt for every collectible you can add 8 more easily if you dont cheat. But that would involve playing missions several times over.
And it will grant you some modifications on weapons in MP, so not much incentive for SP only people.

I am sorely tempted for the single player - but it's a lot of dosh for 8 hours

I was pleasantly surprised by BF1, it's a huge improvement over BF4.  I like the weapons, and vehicles are far more balanced: no insane littlebird pull 9gs sideways after being hit, ducks behind hill, pilot jumps out repairs, then hops back in trash.  In fact, I expect to see an AA nerf because of crying on the forums from the vehicle lovers.  Tanks are also much less maneuverable and can't smoke, which helps mitigate their domination.

Mortars are way too good (specifically airburst) - great at killing infantry, does good damage to light tanks/armored cars - and, most importantly, the "follow the shell view" lets you scout.  It's like launching a recon drone.  Only spotted enemies should show up when using it in my opinion.  If more people played support and used it, it would be a larger problem.  It's a huge advantage for a person playing alone, but imagine being able to direct the rest of your squad to enemies exact positions via comms... if you don't kill them with the other 4 shots that is.

My biggest gripes have more to do with how people play than the game itself:  not nearly enough people play support and drop ammo, this is a significant problem if you are playing assault and want to resupply your AT ammo.   Too many snipers... this is annoying on many maps as it seems like you are either constantly hearing bullets crack or getting headshot dinged, or the enemy is using their vehicles effectively and your side is light on AT.

In terms of performance, a 970 works great for ultra, very happy on that side.  I am getting some annoying crashes though, sometimes I've had to manually restart my vid drivers, kill origin and force a cloud resync, etc.  This is on a rock solid PC.

I primarily play 64 man conquest and there are 40 full servers (yes, 40 -- 64/64 DICE servers) right now (noon cst).  Only played a few operations (primarily to level support/medic) and I never had to wait long.  I have no interest in playing rush.

Love this game.  It's nearly perfect and I really like the Operations Mode.  Sort of a mini history lesson strewn inside an intense FPS match.
