Shrapnel is having a sale through the 30th and I was wondering if any of you have experience/recommendations on any of these? http://www.gamersfront.com/store/memorial_day_sale.html
The only one I have played is Steel Panthers, which is a bit of a classic really.
The ATF games are great simulations but the UI defeated me. Too many icons with randomly chosen pictures, too many menus that you have to get to in some pretty random order when doing battlefield tasks. IIRC it was also a lot of clicking to discover the overall status of the battlefield. Regular scrollbars for the map.
There are few things better than throwing nukes in ATF, though. If you aren't sensitive to UIs pick it up.
Just once I wish they would have a Steam-like fire sale or even one of Matrix's big discounts sale:) Sale prices aren't that much different ($5) than normal prices so really can be picked up at any time without thinking you missed out on a big deal.....some day I will actually pick up the Steel Panther games...some day.
WOOT! All American: The 82nd Airborne in Normandy is on sale for $49.95! Count me "in" for the pre-order.

What???? Its not coming out soon? There goes my pre-order.....
Its kind of an embarrassment that they still advertise that game....I wonder how many people fall for it?
You got me!
I knew when I saw Shrapnel and Sale it really wasn't going to be worth clicking on the link but I did it anyway :idiot2:

LOL.... I never bothered to really look at the game page for this one since it's been vaporware for so long, but here's what it says:
Where we are with All American: The 82nd Airbone in Normandy.
Status: Development
Remaining:
♦ Rework of multiplayer to allow compatibility with Vista.
♦ Voices are being re-recorded after changes to scripts.
♦ Re-evaluating art for maps.
♦ Changing 3 missions.
Beta: No projection
Release: Projected for 2009
It's really almost criminal they are still taking money for this thing, assuming that anyone would be crazy enough to try to.

Agreed.....but with that said, I would love if they actually did complete and release the game:)
All jokes about a Shrapnel sale aside...well, no, we should still joke about that, War Plan Pacific is fun.
At least they've stopped referring to Memorial Day weekend as a time of fun, celebration and BBQ.

Compatibility with Vista. I hope that means they finally got it running on Tandy compatibles.
I don't have the interest to even click the link to see how deeply they're discounting their 14 year old games.
Thanks for the many replies... I'm guessing that the prevailing opinion is to not waste my time and money. ::)

Steel Panthers was/is an awesome game, it' an all time classic for us Strategy Gamers.. supposedly, shrapnel has upgraded their resolution. I don't know what the high res looks like. There is a low res demo available somewhere on the site, if you want to check out the game itself.. Resolution isn't bad.. just can't fill your monitor! Ridiculous for them to charge such a high price for such and old game, but it is what it is... Matrix is worse, Steel Panthers World at War is 50.. and it's not gonna run on Win 7 or higher right out of the box, 'you'll' have to fix it.
But again Steel Panthers is a Classic!

And it is
FREE from Shrapnel along with the modern war version of it. You don't get all the bells and whistles with the free version but it is a classic and they constantly improve it.
I think you will find that the free version runs at quite a low screen resolution though.
I have the bought versions of both SPWW2 and SPMBT and the higher resolutions (1920x1080) was definitely worth it for me.
Here are some screenshots that Oche posted back in 2012 from the bought versions: http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=948.msg75672#msg75672 (http://grogheads.com/forums/index.php?topic=948.msg75672#msg75672)

It may but I don't have any issues seeing it with my old eyes.
Plus did I mention they were FREE? :)

WPP is a pretty good game actually. If you want to play the entire Pacific campaign in a few short hours, this will let you do it. It's probably best described as "Avalon Hill 'Victory in the Pacific' for the PC". Even said, $34 might be more than I'd pay for it again today but there's no drm and I split the costs with my brother years ago so I've gotten my $15-$18 worth out of it.
WPP would be great on a mobile phone or tablet.
Anyone have Bronze from Shrapnel? I downloaded the Demo and it was enjoyable but I'm not sure how much replay value it has.

Ages ago I was in on the beta. It is a fun game in a chess/tower defense kind of way and I've been meaning to try and locate my copy one of these days.

WPP was another of the few games I've been privileged to be a beta tester for. I recommend grabbing a copy if you want a nice, clean, instant-gratification counterpoint to WITP.

I ordered physical copies of both games today. If nothing else, I wanted to support the continued development of a couple of classic games.

I've played the free versions in the past. Looking forward to having the Enhanced versions and the printed manuals.

If I didn't already own it, I'd still consider it for $34.00. I always hoped they'd do the Atlantic so we could have Avalon Hill's 'War at Sea' too. Maybe let the Japanese lend the Germans some ships even or play both fronts together. Nice to put the sound track to Tora, Tora, Tora on while playing.

$34 isn't bad. If you figure that you play it 10 times to completion over a number of years, then you're spending $3.40 each time that you do play it which is very fair. Some will play it much more than that (and some much less).

Actually good for multiplayer too.
Yes, but their games are getting older and older and looking more and more dated. I think they could be a bit friendlier on the pricing model after such a length of time. AKA Matrix sales.

Value for money - WPP vs WITP:AE from my personal experience:
In terms of actual
play time and (on this one it wins hands down) completed PTO campaigns - WPP
In terms of looking at it, installing map mods, looking at it, flicking through the manual, looking at it, starting the first turn of a campaign / scenario, looking at it, having a physical copy of it next to War in the East and War in the West, looking at it again and then realising I still don't know where to start - WITP:AE
:)
