Title: STEAM Mobile Authenticator ?
Post by: Ian C on May 21, 2016, 06:53:52 AM
Anyone else been hit by this? You can't sell items on STEAM unless you give them your private cellphone number?

Lets see...

I give them access to my private number to 'authenticate' my transactions so I can get a few pennies off purchases and they share my number with third parties (unless I got this wrong).

I think not.

I am no expert on the service, but I would doubt their privacy policy would allow them to share phone numbers gathered for the purpose of providing security authentication....a number of places have multiple factor authentication such as banks, hospitals, and other payment providers.

I've been able to sell stuff without providing my number since the annoying new update.  They send an authentication email for every item I want to sell and then I have to log in to the Steam webpage to confirm it.

The last time I tried to sell something without an authenticator, I think they said the item would be placed on hold for a certain number of days before appearing in the marketplace.

Even so, Valve can suck my balls if they think I'm going to use their authenticator.

Well, if they don't share the number with anyone else that's good, but still, I'm not comfortable with being forced to provide private information under procedural duress.

I look at it this way, better my cell number than my driver license number which some brick and mortar retailers require nowadays. I'll still it on eBay in that case thank you very much

Yes, and then it goes on hold for a long time.

I thought of using the authenticator thing, but having to use it every time I want to log into Steam is just silly.

That's interesting...I have never been asked for my driver's license information.  Not sure I would ever give that up, except to the police office that pulls me over for a traffic offense:)

Here's the issue, stores no longer confront shoplifters. They will try to get info to call the cops but they do not want any confrontations in case of lawsuits. So instead they mostly punish law abiding citizens who try to return stuff as the shoplifters will often go to a pawn shop to get quarters on the dollar.
Yes this country is royally fudged up in a lot of ways.

Precisely why I won't use it.  I launch Steam several times a day; I'm not going to piss about with my phone every time.

I noticed this some weeks ago but didn't mention it for fear of being touted a naysayer

It's effectively stopped me selling their shite on the Marketplace...I just don't bother now.

I'm somewhat certain that I use it and I don't think I need to authenticate every time I load up. Not sure though.

Ditto. Its a pain in the bum and I don't use it. The point I made is that what if you don't have a mobile phone? It means you cannot sell trading cards.

I use the mobile authenticator and only have to authenticate when logging into Steam on a new device or if I haven't logged in from an old device for a while.

Oh, OK.  That's a bit better.

They put my Steam card sales on hold for 2 weeks.

And I had to confirm every single damn one via e-mail.

As if they're trying to torture you for not handing over your f'ing number.  :knuppel2:

I have been using the authenticator for a while and I like the added security.
You only have to enter a new code when you log in from an unknown device, an unknown IP. Maybe also after a static timer, but I am not sure.
But definately nog on every login.

Yep, pretty much this.

So I go to list a few cards for sale then see I have a 2 week waiting period. In that 2 week period of course the value of the cards drop and they don't sell for what I had them listed it, I then have to relist them at a lower price and wait another 2 weeks. And no not everyone has a android or an iphone. You can shove this right up your fat arse Gabe........

Believe me, as someone who just got a smart phone a couple of weeks ago, I get the annoyance. But the reason Valve did this is because users wanted it. People were asking for an authenticator to make account inventory hacking more difficult, so they gave users one.

Rather than users take 2 minutes to create a stronger password: https://howsecureismypassword.net/

But the average person doesn't create a very good password like that, even if given the opportunity.  They create something easy so they can remember, which makes it easier for others to crack.  Most people wouldn't want to take the time to remember and type something like that all time.  Multiple factor authentication will always be stronger.

Now whether something stronger is needed for this type of stuff, that is certainly debatable.  In this case I really don't trade or sale stuff so I haven't been impacted yet so not sure how much of a pain it is.  What I do know is that a number of other services I use often uses multifactor authentication for various things so I have a feeling this is the way of the future.
