Title: FRIDAY before Memorial Day
Post by: MetalDog on May 27, 2016, 06:02:13 AM
Monday the United States observes Memorial Day, a day to remember those who have served and died for our country.  I want to thank those who have served and those who have lost.  If not for you, then where might we be?  Thank you.

Enjoy your games.  Enjoy your friends and family and time off.  And thank a veteran.

Thank you to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

This weekend will be spent getting ready to go to NC for my stepson's wedding. Known him since he was 7, now he's 30 and getting married!

Might do a little Gremlins Inc.  It's not a wargame but it's a highly polished strategy board game.

Diving into Rome II for real.  I'm going to hang my head in shame and play on Easy since I suck so badly at the tactical battles..  I may also pick up Battlefield Gothic Armada.

Many thanks to all whom have so greatly sacrificed for our freedom and my being able to sit here and post about it.  O0  I will be trying to give Abe a Memorial Day present by taking Richmond in ACW 2. I've got it surrounded on 3 sides by 2 Union armies. Trouble is, it's defended by the Army of Northern Virginia commanded by some guy named 'Lee'. I hear that this guy could be TROUBLE.  :coolsmiley:

Well, I was going to play Stellaris exclusively (again), but my current game has hit an impasse and the next patch is too close for me to want to restart.

Instead, I might look at Wargame: AirLand Battle picked up in a recent sale, and also we just got Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate for the Wii U which I'm just starting to get into.

Enjoy the long weekend, everyone!  We've got a public holiday in the UK too! :)

Our May holiday was this past Monday, Queen Vicky's birthday.  O0
I've been on vacation all week but that doesn't mean I've been doing unlimited gaming...my wife is expert at creating Honey Doo lists.... :knuppel2:
So it's been planting veggie garden, setup back deck furniture, get pool ready for guests, clean house for guests who are here now for the weekend, etc.
Plus rebuild my car engine now that I have all the parts.

Gaming will be:
PBEM with Jason.
Some Stellaris.
VASSAL work.
Build components for new PnP air combat game Table Air Combat I just bought into. Looks cool. Will definitely be bringing it to Origins to force the others to try it... Might even do a review from that...

But mostly this weekend will be beer drinking and swimming as the forecast calls for 30C or better all weekend.

Salute to veterans all over the world this, and every, weekend.  O0

I'm assuming you're a basketball fan and fair enough there might not be as many scores (or whatever you call them) as you have in your version of netball but at least it is more interesting than that funny version of rugby some Americans play.

Anyway what more excitement do you need than Mourinho arriving at the Theater of Dreams.

:)

Plans are for some 4X for me this weekend though can't really decide what exact game or games, possibly Stellaris or GalCiv III or New Moo or Endless Legends etc. etc.

I actually watch a little soccer. It's a Life Lesson. A bunch of people who can't pick-up the ball, kill themselves getting it down the VERY large field. And then one guy who can pick it up, does so and kicks it back down where it came from. That's pretty much my whole life up to about 40. I think nobody should be allowed to pick-up the damned ball even the officials and to make sure, everybody should play handcuffed from behind. It wouldn't be more interesting but it would be funny as hell.

Gaming wise its going to be some mix of Stellaris, Overwatch, Elite and Diablo 3. Got my copy of Falling Sky in today so I'll be spending some time reading through the rules but not sure if I'll get it on the table or not.

Thanks to my fellow vets and active duty personnel across the globe!

I just played a couple of seasons of John Prados Third Reich.  I'm starting to get it all down now and I'm really liking the tweaks to the original A3R that were done for this one.  My brother has expressed an interest in playing it as well so we may start up the Barbarossa scenario via VASSAL this weekend (I'm playing the old school way - on the table solo).  I'm also shooting for a Sunday continuation of the Valor of the Guards (Stalingrad HASL- ASL) scenario that me and a buddy started last weekend.  We played 6.5 hours last weekend and got through 1.5 turns...just a bloody slugfest with a lot of squads on the big map.  Hell of a good time though.

I'm also working on rules prep for the "La Bataille" series of games.  I'm hoping to get a pbem of it going with my brother in the next few weeks.  And I'm set to play in a 4 player match of Compass Games "Fall Blau" on June 11th so I really need to start reading those rules as well this weekend.  Long story short - lots of wargaming planned on this weekend of remembrance and appreciation.

I still have my AH Rise and Decline of the Third Reich 3ed in my shelf. Why, I was just looking at the insides the other week. I had no idea there was a remake available. And true enough, there's a copy at sale at Boardgamegeek for 65GBP...

Yeah - if you've been kinda avoiding the boardgaming side of the hobby in lieu of the computer side then there's a whole other world over there that just about died in the late 90's but has been surging since.  Example, Third Reich (1974) had 4 versions released and then had Advanced Third Reich along with the Pacific war sister game "Empire of the Rising Sun".  Then the game system "A World at War" was released in 2003/4 I think that supplanted A3R&EOTRS.  That was designed from the guy that took the original Third Reich (your copy) and updated it to A3R.

Finally, yet another company (Avalanche Press) got the rights from the original designer of Third Reich (again, your copy) and produced "John Prados' Third Reich" (https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/2904/john-prados-third-reich).  As mentioned above, I'm quite thoroughly enjoying this one thus far.  It's not as "chess-like" as the original 3R but it still maintains that a bit of that element. And then of course I couldn't begin to list all the various other WW2 ETO/PTO games that have since come out since 3R did in 1974.

Check out the board wargaming stuff again some day- you'll be amazed at what it has to offer and if you have a buddy or a group that is into board wargaming play a few face-to-face games with them and you'll really see what wargaming is like.  :)

So true. I am doing just this at the moment. Last year I decided to restock my AH titles from Boardgamegeek, to add to A3R and PL which were the only surviving items I had. Having stocked up with Panzerblitz and Arab Israeli Wars again, I then tried out MMP's Panzerblitz Hill of Death which despite the somewhat negative reviews I found to be quite enjoyable. Just not the PB (or PL rather) of the old.

I then kitted up with some modern era games with LnL's Dawn's Early Light and OSS's Putin Stikes (which should be shipping about right now). Having enjoyed Dawn's Early Light I then ordered LnL's  WW2 and Modern demo kits, but as always when I go below Platoon level it is just not for me.

I am at the moment again looking at some alternative WW2 era games. Almost bought MMP's Baltic Gap from the Geek (operational), but could not decide if I should get their Canadian Crucible (tactical) instead. Might just go for the latter next  :smitten:

This weekend I will be finally winning my DC3: Barbarossa match vs. Bart, thanks to the Germans being too distracted for 30 days to continue starving me to death. USSR! USSR!  :P ::)

Having achieved this moral victory, I may call a surrender if Bart doesn't want to finish finishing me off. :) (That way I can finally read his side of the war, and vice versa of course.)

ACK! 30 days?!? Really?  :o  :-[

Sorry about that. I had/have every intention of continuing to crush Russians beneath my treads but will understand if you don't want to put up with my tardiness any longer.
It's been a good fight and I REALLY want to read your side of the war.  O0

So I'm good if we end here. There have been so many changes since we started.... Maybe we could try again in the fall?  :D

I honestly don't know how the coming of the rainy season is supposed to help me at this point.

I do have some plans for continuing into the rainy season in a sort of specialized partisan effort, if you want to continue, but you're about to kill umpteen armies in the central theater by staring at them. My reinforcement schedule for the rest of the game is unclear, and if you ever wipe out all combat units in a single theater (which seems likely at this point, one way or another), you instantly win.

Well... I think it's your call since I dragged this out so much. I wouldn't blame you for claiming the win as "All Germans returned home for Oktoberfest and forgot to return to the front." :)

Currently, for those following along, the plan is for Bart to play a quick turn sometime in the next month or two ;) , so that I can load my turn and send a surrender notice.

Relatedly, I've set up a new thread for both of us and our readers to discuss each other's game and our own game in hindsight. An AAR of the AARs so to speak.  :D

My Fallout 4 character finally met my exacting standards.  I only started over 4 times?  The last time I started over I was level 34.

But now at level 40 I've finally got my OCD RPG under control.  I'm close to actually getting started on the main quest.  I've avoided triggering the entry of the Brotherhood of Steel Heli-Carrier into Boston.

Well, quite surprisingly, the game I've played the most this weekend has actually been Saints Row: The Third which was ported to Linux a month or so ago.  I put it on my wishlist yesterday, then happened to check out Humble to find that it was included in a bundle!  So I picked it up and I've already put in nearly 7 hours, despite having played it a lot on the Xbox.

I am very pleasantly surprised at how well it plays with a mouse and keyboard.  Driving isn't ideal obviously, but besides that everything else is superior.  It's a lot easier to get headshots, for example, which really helps when you're facing a swarm of enemies.  I've also been reminded of just how funny the game is; it's been quite a while since a game last had me properly belly-laughing.  It's a very silly game. :)

Pillars of Eternity is surrounding me with its slavering maw. Probably my favorite RPG of the last few years, even more than The Dragon Age games, which I love. I guess I am a traditionalist...PoE feels like home. I hope the two DLCs get marked down during the Steam sale.

Yeah, I'm waiting on Part 2 even though I haven't even gotten to Part 1 yet. And I read the other day.... PoE 2 Is in the works. I've been really surprised by how well the Stronghold part of this game works. I expected it to be mostly a gimmick but it's very functional and, fun too.

Yeah I love the stronghold in PoE...didn't even know it existed before I started playing.

I loved pillars. Just a good old fashion isometric RPG  with new graphics.  It's got everything you need crafting good storyline cool magic spells skill trees...

I love the look of the game, it's beautiful. Some of the most realistic water-effects I've ever seen and it's really great the way the air over a fire blurs as if it's really hot. I spend time just looking at all the extra stuff indoors and outdoors.

Yeah the modern effects and graphics combined with the excellent storytelling make for a great RPG. And I'm only at level 5 after 20 hours!

I just ran into a 'Giant Dank Spore'. Reminds me of my Gym locker in Jr. High School.  :idiot2:

Better your locker than your shorts. I'm trying to the think of the best enemies I have run into so far...I think the forge knights have been the most bad ass.

I also like that there are firearms in-game. Is it worth it to arm a hunter character with a blunderbuss or arquebus instead of the standards hunting bow?

Yes if you don't need them to be able to hit from far away as the firearm weapons have limited range and take forever to re-load. But they pack a hell-of-a-punch. Wands and Rods also have good damage numbers, especially some of the special items that you'll come across as you play, and have good range and re-load time. And... you can Enchant any weapon or armor if you've got the required ingredients that'll give them special attacks, and let them do even more damage or more protection, or whatever.

I haven't enchanted anything yet - no idea how to do it.

But I will arm my hunter with a firearm, that sounds like loads of fun!

Enchanting is easy-peasy. Just right click on the weapon in the Items screen, look at the bottom and click on 'Enchant'. A list of enchantments/improvements will come up. Clicking on them will show you what you they do, what you have, and what you need to do the improvement. No recipes, no Crafting Tables or Crafting Skills required. They all require some money for some reason so you'll need some coin to make the improvement. But what's good is if your characters aren't ready to go up an experience level yet, you can improve your weapons and or armor and still fight better or last longer. You can spend an hour just cruising around looking at stuff in this game and not even get to playing it.

I really need to get back into PoE. Heroes of the Storm has been taking most of my disposable time lately.

I just wasn't happy with my monk, I think I need to try something else.

Thanks Slash...since I've played a while without enchanting anything it will probably take me forever now to get everything maxed out. Does crafting work differently?

No. Crafting works the same way.

Completed a couple of higher level quests last night and havd about 10k in gold, so I invested in an arquebus for my hunter. The nextfight we got into was against similarly armed enemies - it was like the OK Corral!

A fee days ago I also sold the crapload of mushrooms and herbs and stones we found so I cannot really enchant anything at this point.  Have to load up my stash with items again.

Also got word that my keep is going to be invaded.

I find it hard not to love a game that allows me to feel I have made great progress in only 90 minutes!

I'll tell you what's helped me a lot in the game Gus. The Skills: Field Triage and Wound Binding. Because other than Resting/Camping it's the only thing I've been able to find in the game that heals your characters. You know if your Health hits 0, your character is dead and there's no resurrection in this game. But you don't want to waste those precious Camping Supply units when you don't have to so. What do you do?

Both Skills will recover a moderate amount of Health on whoever they're used on. Wound Binding can only be used on the character that has it, Field Triage can be used on any character in the party. Any character can have them, at least any I've seen so far-- they're not Class restricted. And any character can have both Skills. They can be used once each before needing to be re-charged by Resting. They heal your characters some and thus save Camping Supplies. They're under the 'Utility" tab when you Level-up and get a new Skill.

Maybe someone who's played longer than me knows something better but I haven't found anything else that will recover Health on your Party Members. Get them and thank me later.  ;)

I think so...probably my favorite new rpg in a crowded field.

It's held my interest since purchase-- at Level 11 now and hopefully approaching the end game. Lots to do, but only if you really want to. Lots of loot and cool stuff to find and quite a lot of hidden objects/ containers around some of the dungeons. You need a character with high perception to find some of it too. Pacing seems about right, combat's not too tough but you still can lose easily if you're careless. They could've done this one a lot worse in my opinion.

I completed this game early this year.  I played a "godlike" monk.  It's long but not too long.  While well written, it occasionally felt a little grindy but you can in fact skip quite a bit of the side missions if you want to just race through the plot.  While only completed one playthrough, it did feel like there were some meaningful choices to make which would impact the end game.
There are plenty of companions out there but youcan create custom companions (though without the interesting story the main companions have).  Theoretically you could even solo the game but I think that would be pretty challenging even on easy mode.  Don't know, I think since xp is divided up between characters, I suppose your main character level could get much higher than if just in a group?

Anyway, definitely one of the few RPGs to have kept me hooked and I'd highly recommend it.

For me, easy mode has not been so easy. But I use it the most of all difficulty settings.

Are we still talking about Pillars Of Eternity?  Or did this thread go RL in metaphors?

As for PoE, my first and only campaign began with the Sorcerer/Wizard class, whatever that is.  As with the D&D system it took inspiration from, the early levels for such a class is squishy and weak.  I had hoped they got past that down side to D&D games, but it carried over into their "custom" system.  I also suppose your earliest companions don't change based on your own class..?

Then... the first NPC character who offers to join me is... another Sorcerer.   Fffuu..!!  Combat was pretty painful until I finally got a beefcake-type fighter to join.  And he still doesn't hold aggro any more than the other two, so they still get pulped.

Yet I've still enjoyed the whole thing.  Despite the extra helping of punishment I got.

HA 'Beefcake' class.

My own avatar is a dwarf cipher...I always play with avatars most like me in real life.

My party now is mostly at level 5 and combat is getting steadily less harsh.

I was enjoying myself with PoE until I finally made it down to the bottom of my keep and met the big baddy down there.  The entire party got wiped in about 5 seconds.  Reloaded, healed and buffed and tried again.  Same result.  Tried some gamey exploits and managed to get him down to about 2/3rds of his health before dying again.

Gave up, went and did a lot more of the main story until I'd found all NPCs and reached the level cap for everyone.  Then I tried, and tried, and tried again to beat the baddy with every possible party combo and never even came close to winning that fight. I watched a bunch of walkthroughs and read guides for how to win but still never even came close. Stopped playing after that.
