Title: Cast A Deadly Spell (HBO 1991)

This olde, unusual, and little known Lovecraft-inspired gumshoe pulp movie just made it to Amazon Prime.

Quote from: imdb synopsisIn 1948 Los Angeles, everyone uses magic- everyone except hard-boiled private detective H. Phillip Lovecraft, who refuses for "personal reasons." Lovecraft is hired by a mysterious rich man to recover a stolen book, the Necronomicon. Investigating, he finds that the book holds the key to taking over the world by magical means, releasing the "Old Ones".

It may be an old made-for-HBO movie, but I'd still highly recommend Lovecraft fans check it out.  The alt-history mix of noir gumshoe (somewhat parodied) detective film intertwined with the heavy Lovecraft themes is entertaining.  ^-^

Bonus points for casting Clancy Brown and David Warner!  O0

*Free to watch on Amazon Prime.

I wonder if they'll eventually add the sequel Witch Hunt, with Dennis Hopper.  Not quite as good, IMO, since it has more gumshoe & less dark Lovecraftian sorcery, but I wouldn't complain.

Thanks for the tip! I've put it on my watchlist for just the right moment.

Wasn't bound to win any awards with the budget & all.  Despite the muppet demons, and Julianne Moore's horrid lip-sync piece, it's still pretty amusing for it's alt-reality escapism mixed with a little comedy.  :))
