Title: ARMA or Flashpoint?
Post by: DV8 on June 03, 2012, 08:34:18 AM
Hello!

I was hoping to get some feedback on whether to buy Flashpoint or ARMA.  Both are pretty cheap and this way I could dip my toe into a fully sandbox high reality FPS.

Which do you like better?
Should I pass GO and move directly to ARMA II?

Thanks,
DV8

ARMA.  The newer iterations of Operation Flashpoint are not realistic but more mainstream FPS.
Skip ARMA I and go straight to ARMA II.

There is a free version of ARMAII (no campaign, just multiplayer, but you can play user designed missions) so why not try before you buy?

Excellent suggestion.  Will do.

I've never played Flashpoint so I cannot speak to that.  However, I recently purchased ARMA II and have been enjoying playing through the campaign.  I've never played a realistic shooter before so I am learning the hard way that alot of my FPS habits won't cut it.  The learning curve has been a bit steep but its been alot of fun.

LMK if you'd like some tips on playing FPS games. I don't have ARMA II (yet), but I have played a bunch of FPS games.

^Would you be willing to share some of those tips with a mediocre FPS geezer like me too?   :)

Sounds like the makings of a nice article for the GrogHeads front page.

Yes. That's a good idea. I should probably pick up a copy of Arma II anyway.

I have recently become interested in ARMA but I'm really interested in the Combat Mission Afghan game. Have heard mixed reports on it.

I like it, but it's a real wargame. You can get chewed up if you're not careful.

The ARMAs are great games.  Of course the original Operation Flashpoint was essentially ARMA-0, but Codemasters
had the rights to that name once they markett-ed it back in 2001 or 2002.

I have two pieces of advice about ARMA-2 and Iron Front (a commercial mega-mod of ARMA-2): play online once you learn the basics -- many
online modes are easier than many of the missions since in the online world the AI usually has a big advantage in material and spotting
and what not and you can often use the AI to do useful things.

The other advice is to learn to use the editor and work out things vs the AI in PREVIEW mode.

Looks like Arma II is getting the Czech army. Smuck should be pleased!

I don't like ARMA mutliplayer because so much time is wasted travelling to where the action is.  Once you get to the fight, you die quickly if not careful.

I have the ARMA X Anniversay Pack which I liked a lot.  It's got OFP, ARMA, ARMA2 with all the expansions and some bonus content.  It's ARMA heaven.

My copy of ArmA 2: Combined Operations arrives today but I will be out of town until Friday.  :'(

I still have PTSD from playing CoD4 on the Wragmer server. I'm getting better, but it's going take time.

Then there were guys who could dodge bullets in a Matrix-like way - Deadskin appeared to be impossible to hit

Those were great times!  I didn't even mind when I blew myself up (several times) with my own grenade. :)

In terms of single-player missions, I think the original ArmA is inferior to the original Operation Flashpoint. The AI had silly advantages in spotting that meant AI troops could snipe you in the middle of the night without night vision goggles. I quit playing after a couple of missions.

ArmA 2 is supposedly better, but I haven't played it. I haven't played the newest Operation Flashpoint titles either.

OT: Quick note that I just changed 'AMRA' in the thread title to 'ARMA'.

OK, so I have several hours into ARMA and the biggest lessons thus far are stay down and move cautiously.  The learning curve is very step but rewarding once you figure things out.  I prefer to run lone wolf so I'm not bothered with squad commands.

It is quite fun when you figure it out!

Right now I am stuck I think in one of the last missions where I have to lead some units of militia to take back some towns.  I  have not got the hang of commanding that many troops, they all keep dying.  I can't do it lone wolf style because there are just to many enemy units.

I've been playing mostly with a AI LAN game.  It's much more free form that the campaign mode.  I vote the AI as commander.

^Have you had any success saving the LAN game to resume at a later time?  When I tried this mode last year it took 12 minutes for the save file to load.  Once back into the game, I would experience a 50% CTDesktop rate.  I'm hoping that you have met with success?

Truthfully my ADHD has prevented me from continuing a saved game.  ;)

I tried it in standard ARMA 2 and it worked fine.  Are you using Arrowhead?

I had problems in both the vanilla ARMA 2 and Arrowhead.
