Title: i love robots! ...but thats creepy
Post by: MikeGER on June 29, 2016, 04:17:11 AM
check out the latest from Boston Dynamics

Spot Mini...   glance at the scenes starting @0:41

like a robotic bigger cat with a cobra-esk snake (robot arm) growing out of its back .... its like digital worlds bad dream from a Peter Bruegel painting of a overall design decision. (well, i like all the senors and all the possibilities but arranging it in that way is just creeepy.... that are not the druids i am lookin for, its not a lovely R2D2 Butler/Gardener servant)

...now imagine the arm taking a key from a board and went to unlock and be grabbing a small handgun from a gun cabinet... or getting a larger syringe and filling it up with Domestos and marching upstairs to your bedroom in the dark ...

Since childhood I've thought how cool it would be to have robots. But that video creeps me out for some reason.  :o
Also, it's nice the robot can recover from a fall but I'm guessing your hardwood floors might take a beating if it's a regular occurrence.

the SpotMini only has a battery life of 90 minutes ...so denying /sabotage the recharge could do the trick
the larger robots have electric/hydraulic pressure generators and use fuel tanks and are noisy ...good to hear and so to evade.

I think the main and non discussed problem today will be that those robots (and the assistant gadgets we already have)  belong to a big company which most likely will demand a constant hookup to the internet (even so its not necessary if designed different from the start) and will send whatever data those sensors can gether about the owner to the big company server.... only to improve the performance of the home-robots and to provide an early warning of failures (like SMART for HDDs or similar software in modern cars full of electronic) as they will claim, ...always!

We need assistant gadgets that run on phones or dedicated item at home, and robots that function complete autonomic without any internet connection (so no voice recording, sending it to the company server to decode, analyse, formulate an answer and send answer back to the device, or calculating the path finding roots for all your maps and movement there on the company server and not doing all those calculation offline on your devices CPU).
Also all personal data were the device had learned the habits and likes of its owner should get only and only! stored on the owners personal home cloud or in the device itself (physical at his home! and only with a highly crypted backup now and then on a cloud-service of your choice)

Imagine you were rich and famous and have an traditional English butler (a high paid human gentleman) almost part of your family.
and if you ask him to do a task, he would always calls his butler school first, discuss the who's and what's and how's with that butler school, the butler school has a growing record about all your habits (even those you don't even realized you had them- Like Germany's coach Jogi Löws nut-sack crawl and finger sniffing probe;-) ) to -as that butler school claimed- help do get butlers task done "better" (and also to send unwanted adds of course, and to feed the butler with only those choices of a product selection they want to sell when he got tasked to buy an item)

would you employ such a butler/driver gardener/housekeeper or cook ?      I don't think so !

Did r2d2 send all his movement and pathfinding on Tatooine and the secret holo-message record of Leia to its manufacture Industrial Automaton ...well, just to improve pathfinding on planets algorithm and quality of holo-recordings in general?  ^-^

+1 to Mike for the reality check. It's a VERY good point about the "spyware". O0

Almost 36 hours and no one has yet diverted the thread to what kind of druids Mike ought to be looking for.

So there you are, peacefully abed, when, in the wee small hours you become aware of the sound of 4 small metal hooves on the stairs................

Maybe they could make some robots to replace us here. You know, smart-ass, opinionated, self-centered, boobie-loving, bad pun-making robots. Or..... maybe they already have.  :o I'll-be-back.
