Title: Brazil 2016 Summer Olympics
Post by: steve58 on July 04, 2016, 05:57:01 PM
Sounds like the 2016 Olympic Summer Games (http://townhall.com/tipsheet/mattvespa/2016/07/04/lets-face-it-the-rio-olympics-are-going-to-be-a-disaster-n2186511) are going to be a mess, if not a disaster :crazy2:  Here's hoping Brazil can get their sh*t together and out of the swimming/boating venues before the games start.  Like 0bama can make Jimmy Carter look good, Rio de Janeiro may end up making the '96 Atlanta Games look great.  >:D

I stopped being a fan of the Olympics back during the Seoul summer games. NBC caught a lot of flak because of the ridiculous amount of commercials they decided to play. Ever since then there's been ongoing reports about how corrupt the Olympic Committee is, and when shitholes like Brazil and Sochi get them, you KNOW money, favors, and/or anal orifice fluids are being exchanged.

I'll go ahead and say it: the Olympics are more corrupt than the Clintons. And THAT'S saying something! (shiver)

I was really sad for selfish reasons that Boston dropped out of the Olympic host.  I was pretty certain we would get the Olympics (the US is the biggest market and due and Boston would make a great host city)  Living 3 mins walk to the T (the Boston Subway) I figured I could rent my house out for the month of August and make a pretty penny.  A friend of mine made $50K renting her detached house out at Clapham common for the London Olympics.

However seeing how the greed and corruption and cronyism that are the modern Olympics it really is a huge waste of money that is left burdening the host cities and states for years to come for no gain.  As they said while dropping Bostons bid there is no reason why citizens should get stuck footing the bill for shoddy transit infrastructure, villages and stadiums that have no real way to be re-purposed all to throw a two week corporate party for Nike and Puma etc.  I am actually proud seeing how these Olympics are now progressing that Boston told them to go Shove it.

By the way if you want to talk about US Olympic scandals then the Utah Olympics takes the cake for bribery and for making the federal government cough up unprecedented amounts of dough for the event (the latter part organized by Romney)

Because in most cases their legal status in the country they're in now precludes them from representing them.  You're supposed to be able to claim citizenship in that country, and while some countries will shelter refugees from conflict, they don't necessarily offer them citizenship.  But since they are refugees, it's not like they can go home to try out for the team.  Some of them may have fled religious persecution; others might be political refugees.  Honestly, I'm a little surprised none of them are from Zimbabwe.

This Syrian girl on the refugee team, Yusra Mardini, is a badass: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/yusra-mardini-rio-2016-olympics-womens-swimming-the-syrian-refugee-competing-in-the-olympics-who-a7173546.html (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/people/yusra-mardini-rio-2016-olympics-womens-swimming-the-syrian-refugee-competing-in-the-olympics-who-a7173546.html)

QuoteThirty minutes after setting off from Turkey, the motor on their boat, which was meant for six people but carrying 20, began to fail. Most of those on board it could not swim. With no other alternative, Mardini, Sarah and two strong swimmers jumped into the sea and swam for three hours in open water to stop their dinghy from capsizing, eventually reaching Lesbos.

"We were the only four who knew how to swim," she said of the experience. "I had one hand with the rope attached to the boat as I moved my two legs and one arm. It was three and half hours in cold water. Your body is almost like ... done. I don't know if I can describe that."

Because there's already an 'official' Syrian team (read: politically acceptable).
Think about some Yazidi kid who was forced out of home by the Syrian regime.  No way to return to Syria to compete for a spot - might actually be killed by the regime just for being there - but also not a citizen of wherever they're living at the moment (and may not ever want to become one if they harbor any hope of returning home).
What about religious persecution in Sudan?
What about 1990s-era Bosnia Muslims forced out of their homes by the Serbs, but still fast enough to run in the track events?  Might've been sheltered in Germany until the war ended and then try to return home.  There was no refugee team then, but if there was, there probably would've been some Balkan participants.

I've had it on for the last 15 minutes. The pre-game report they do, anyway. There has been 10 minutes of commercials in that time.

Ten.

Minutes.

Lots of pro-Rio coverage in the scant few minutes left, like 'Celebrating Brazil's Cultural Heritage' and 'Sampling Rio's Food and Nightlife.' Some real hard-hitting fluff pieces, here.

My daughter likes to watch them and I'm trying to do that too, and not to spend too much time playing games. But these commercials annoy the crap out of me so I won't last long.

On a happier note I'm not one to get too excited but the GF and I are watching it from approx 8pm to 11 each night. It's on bbc were there's no adverts, the downside being they have to commentate on the local footage which is Brazil centric so a gb athlete might be up next and they'll switch to another discipline of the gymnastics but other than that it's been a nightly thing I've enjoyed - don't particularly care about diving or gymnastics but it's been good to cheer the team on

It seems every time I tune in to one of those alternative channels, I get tennis or synchronized whatever, some of the most boring events ever to watch. Tennis and golf both suck as spectator sports (IMO of course). Playing either is MUCH more fun, but I can't stand sitting there watching either.

And synchronized anything is pretty damned silly. Unless there's some kind of pr0n event, and that might happen soon given the Olympic Committee's propensity to whore itself out.

On a more positive note, I think this could be the first time that fencing has been regularly featured on the main network offerings!  :smitten: O0 The nieces have been watching that when they can (among other things of course); and I got to explain some of the things to them and to Mom and Dad.

Highly amused to see that, as back in my day, sloppy crappy form is still king!  :2funny: :P Watching the sabre gold, I could predict for the folks when the judge would start basically penalizing both sides by calling both their attacks as simultaneous, losing patience with their nonsense and forcing them to fight more cleanly if they wanted him to call a score. QuoteUncle Sam still comes for you, even if you're winning Olympic medals in the country's name

Olympic medals and the bonuses—$25,000 for a gold medal, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze— that the U.S. Olympic Committee awards athletes for landing one of the top spots all count as taxable income to the IRS.

Victory bonuses and medals are seen by the IRS as being like any other prize winnings, such as lottery, casino or game show winnings and, thus, are taxable.

The tax bill might not be as big as you'd imagine thanks to the medals' actual monetary value, the basis on which they are taxed, being so low. According to MONEY's own estimates the scrap value of a gold medal is about $501, depending on the portion of actual gold used to make the medal and current price of gold. Silver medals have even less value, about $300, and bronze medals, being a mix of copper and zinc, have little value.

Athletes can offset their potential tax hit with the hundreds of thousands of dollars in expenses they've likely racked up for training and traveling, if they treat their sport as a profession. Last Olympics, the New York Timesreported that Missy Franklin's parents spent $100,000 a year on her swimming expenses.

There are many who dislike that Olympic athletes must pay taxes for a victory.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) has referred to this issue as "the victory tax" and has called on the House to pass legislation exempting Olympic winners from paying income taxes on their medal earnings. Sen. Marco Rubio also proposed a bill in 2012 to exempt Olympians from the tax. Even President Obama has said he's in favor of an exemption.

Six Olympics in a row winning a medal!

QuoteRIO DE JANEIRO — Make it six straight for Kim Rhode.

The 37-year-old American won a medal for her sixth consecutive Olympics on Friday, capturing bronze in the skeet shooting event at the Olympic Shooting Center.

It's a stunning accomplishment from Rhode, who becomes the first female Olympian to medal in six consecutive games, and the first summer Olympian as well. Only Italian luger Armin Zoeggeler has done it on the men's side.

Rhode's bronze medal match ended in a shoot-off, after both she and China's Meng Wei hit 15 of 16 clays. Rhode missed a clay in her first round of the shoot-off, but Meng followed by missing one of her own. Three rounds later, Meng missed her final clay to hand the bronze to Rhode.

Rhode lifted her arm to the sky when she realized she'd done it. She then walked over to the stands, where her husband handed her their 3-year-old son for a long hug.

"Being a mom, having a son here, it's amazing," she said. "I hope that he remembers this. We've taken tons of pictures trying to capture the moment."

Afterward, she said history was on her mind as she was shooting.

"Most definitely," she said. "When you're in that bronze medal match, and you know you can walk away going for Olympic history or [nothing], yes, that was definitely on my mind."

The crowd rose to give Rhode a standing ovation after the announcer told them history had just been made.

Italians Chiara Cainero and Diana Bacosi won silver and gold, respectively.

Rhode's Olympic history has been nothing short of dominant. She won gold in the 1996 Games in double trap at the age of 17, then followed up with bronze in Sydney, gold in Athens, silver in Beijing, and then gold in London.

"Standing up there on the podium, it's addicting," Rhode said. "It keeps me coming back for more."

IOC president Thomas Bach was in the crowd for the event, catching a seat for history.

American Morgan Craft, 23,  also competed in the event, but was eliminated in a semifinal shoot-off.

Craft said after the final that she respected Rhode's longevity, but doesn't see herself competing in that many Olympics – her dream is to become a physician's assistant.

Rhode has become an outspoken defendant of the second amendment in the United States. In a news conference before the start of the Games, Rhode spoke out about what it meant to her.

"We should have the right to keep and bear arms, to protect ourselves and our family," she said. "The second amendment was put in there not just so we can go shoot skeet or go shoot trap. It was put in so we could defend our first amendment, the freedom of speech, and also to defend ourselves against our own government."

Maybe, instead of trying to teach dolphins to plant mines on moving subs, the Navy should just start cloning Phelps.

And what, chase enemy subs down?

Carrying a mine or two won't slow him down much.

More Phelps-ness, from ESPN

QuoteSo let's get this out of the way now: Michael Phelps is the greatest American athlete of all time. He's the greatest Olympian of all time and it's not particularly close: Phelps has 23 gold medals and nobody else has more than nine. The idea that the number of events in swimming inflates Phelps' statistics doesn't really hold much muster. If it were that easy, why haven't any swimmers before or after Phelps come close to matching his totals? Ian Thorpe, the best swimmer in the world in the era immediately preceding Phelps, won five golds. Matt Biondi ended up with eight. Jenny Thompson, the most decorated Olympic female swimmer in history, also won eight. Spitz won nine. He might have won more had he kept swimming after the 1972 Olympics, but he didn't.

If Phelps was narrowly ahead of the competition -- if he had 10 or 11 gold medals -- maybe the inflation case would hold up. But 23 to nine is a landslide. Nobody else has won four gold medals in a single Olympics more than once. Phelps has done it four times. Nobody won eight medals in a boycott-free Olympics before Phelps. He did it twice, both in these 2004 Olympics and again in 2008. To the extent that we can compare athletes across different sports, Phelps has dominated swimming in a way that no other American athlete has dominated his or her sport at the highest level over a longer period of time. And if you're not picking Phelps because it's impossible to make those kinds of comparisons, you can't pick anybody else.

and

QuotePhelps won eight gold medals in Beijing, setting six world records and a seventh Olympic record during a meet noted for the prevalence of the LZR Racer swimsuit. This was the most successful single Olympiad for an athlete in the history of the modern competition, and if you just pretend it never happened, Phelps would still be the most decorated athlete in Olympics history.

No other American has won metals at 6 different Olympic games.  She is virtually unreported in most of the mainstream press.  The Wall St. Journal did a story on her before the games and a follow-up after she won.  They also had an editorial about how her accomplishments were virtually ignored by the rest of the press.

In the USA, how many millions of people shoot skeet or trap annually versus many of the other sports?  On the clays courses I've been on in Alabama and Georgia about 10% of the shooters are female.  I've taught almost as many females as males to shoot shotguns.

She is a big draw at shooting competition and outdoor trade shows.

At competitive levels, skeet becomes an endurance contest.  Really good shooters can hit multiple hundreds in a row (a complete course is 25 shots).  I've made 24 out of 25 several times.  I never could get 25 - my concentration would break or I would think too much about a shot and miss it.

Going by gold, second.

I watched a program the other day that showed the success of the UK Olympic team and the investment. The results of the investment from the National Lottery started to show in 2008. As funding has increased since 2004, so too has the medal count.

£400m approximately was invested in the team since 2012

They had an alternate chart on the radio last night - medals per capita of the country- were 19th, USA is 40th and Grenada is 1st

Reports today on the radio speculate the Paralympics will be a bit of a wash out as Brazil can't afford the extra costs

Olympics are over.  Did not watch any of it with the sound on since what I saw was in bars.

Only things I followed were shooting and women's basketball.

That's a nice flip to it.

Given the UK's position and investment, it would also be interesting to see per $ of investment

Just in case you were feeling slightly adequate today

http://www.espn.com/olympics/story/_/id/17535217/four-visually-impaired-paralympians-beat-olympic-gold-medal-1500m

QuoteAlgeria's Abdellatif Baka set a blazing pace in the Paralympics men's 1,500-meter final, turning in a time of 3 minutes, 48.29 seconds at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, good for a gold medal.

Had he run that time at the same track in August, he would have eclipsed surprise Olympic gold medalist Matthew Centrowitz's winning time of 3:50 in the same event.

Baka was not alone, either, as the second-, third- and fourth-place finishers in the Paralympics final all bettered the American Centrowitz's gold-medal winning time in Rio.
