Title: In the days of my youth, I was told what it means to be a FRIDAY!!
Post by: MetalDog on July 08, 2016, 05:40:07 AM
Happy weekend fellow, Grogs!!  And it couldn't have got here sooner!  It's been one of those weeks where time plays tricks on you and a four day work week feels like forty :(  Fear not!  FRIDAY is finally here!!!!!  The weekends festivities will include lawn mowing!  Laundry doing!  House cleaning!  Oh, and some game playing ;)  And that's what concerns us :)

Along with the usual Civ IV, single and multi-player, I have taken up an old campaign in Hearts of Iron II as Italy.  I think I have backed myself into a corner, I have Turkey, Syria and Lebanon in a bid to outflank the Brits, but, now that I have them where I want them, I realize that I don't think I have enough materiel to complete my outflanking maneuver.  I may just declare war to see what happens anyways.

To borrow liberally from Elvis with a few things changed:

Maybe I didn't treat you
Quite as good as I should have
Maybe I didn't love you
Quite as often as I could have
Little things I should have said and done
I just never took the time

Arma's always on my mind
Arma's always on my mind

I think it was Jarhead who said that this game fills his FPS itch and then some, and I can (now) see where he is coming from.

I will probably play the following games:

- Grand Ages: Rome
- Horizon
- Armada 2526
- Field of Glory (pbem)
- Oriental Empires
- Civil War: 1863

I will also watch the final game of the Euro on Sunday (Portugal against France), a western with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill and one or two episodes of Deep Space Nine.

In your opinion, which is the better game....Stellaris or Polaris Sector. Or better yet, if you could only keep one, which would it be?  I'm asking because I am enjoying Stellaris but haven't bought Polaris Sector yet.

Hmmmm.... loaded question.... Stellaris in polished and will only become greater the longer PDox supports it. Polaris Sector is still a bit rough and not as deep... yet... but I think it still gives a better feeling of the vastness of space and the proper time scale feeling to building space ships.
But I haven't been back to PS since Stellaris came out... though that might change with the lasts update for PS.
So, in summation, I don't know.... weak I know but there ya go...  :crazy2:

My wife used to tell me to trim my corners but now I'm just round all-over so..... It's been scorching here this week and what I really need is a computer game I can play in the pool. But since I can't find any of those, it'll be ACW 2 where it's Nov. 1862 and at least the map looks like fall and cool weather. Have a good one Grogs.

You need to keep 2ndACR company.

I'm beginning to think someone needs to go on deathwatch, as much as he's been lamenting having to solo matches lately.   :crazy2:

My digital gaming has been approximately nil in the past couple weeks.  Another long burnout break.

I'll return eventually.

Didn't want to grind it into the ground.  I'm not used to playing one thing for months straight.  When I've done so in the past, the burnout eventually gets so bad that I never return.  Didn't want that to happen with WoWS, so I'll wait until they've expanded it a bit & come back with a fresh interest.   O0

I anticipate lots of struggling in the twilight with Barth!

...

........

...wait. Let me rephrase. Lots of Twilight Struggle with Barth.

I can pretty safely guarantee the game will declare one of us the winner sometime in the next fortnight. Maybe even sometime in the next week. (Whether we'll be able to continue after that, I don't know.)

I've experimentally figured out the most efficient way to proceed as Qinghai (nation 131 out of 131) in Victoria 2, so I may do a few more years with them. Since they started with literally only 3 points of civ research (out of the 10 thousand plus necessary for even one of the preliminary researches to westernize), it's mainly sitting around watching super-obscure tiny nations developing science things and going to war with each other and major powers. The Ottoman Empire did demand that Holland release Belgium as a nation, though -- that was insane, and triggered a brief war among some of the Greats before it got resolved.

Moved my Sleeping Dogs campaign forward a few notches yesterday; might do so again this weekend.

I played quite a bit of Goliath last weekend, but I'm not sure I'll continue with it. You'd think a survival(-lite) pre-steampunk mecha design game would be awesome, and I think a lot of people do like it, but... I dunno. Just seems like too many gamey mechanics, and the humorous tone rubs me the wrong way for no clear reason.

Might try plowing through the next mission of the original Company of Heroes campaign (Cherbourg I think). Each mission is so super-epic it tires me out fast; like a Dawn of War campaign where every single mission is equivalent to final assault on an enemy base.

(Relatedly, I'll probably DoW:SS a little if I can swing it.)

I haven't played Ortus Regni or Redcon yet; got those during the sale.

Might try the Warhammer: Man-o-war campaign again, depending on where / whether the autosave got me last time. I've had fun in my limited time there, but forgot to save and got wiped by an orc boarding party when I foolishly went down to help with defense instead of staying high to shoot.

Somewhat relatedly, I haven't gotten back to 40K: Battlefleet Gothic in a while.

I'd like to start a Rome 2 campaign -- or at least finish the "Rome origin" tutorial campaign!  :crazy2:

Not far from finishing my next step in my Grand Ages: Medieval campaign for that matter -- surely I'll get to marry the Empress and that'll be a good thing in relation to Byzantine plots, right?  ::) :P

Working Saturday. But have off Sunday.

Might be digging into Mount and Blade Warband - Just native, but its fun. Might try out a mod or two but Just learning the ropes here.

I did get CK II Charlemagne so I might be checking that one out too.

Otherwise ghosty's recommended Star Trek New Horizons mod for Stellaris.- Love the mod. The sound effects, even the new designs for hulls, different races etc.

My one thing with Stellaris is I seem to fall behind the fleet strength. No matter who it is, I'm always dealing with someone with overwhelming fleet power, and I'm struggling to get up to 18 ships? I'll have to dig into it though.

The link to his thread can be found in the first post.

Now we shall need a poll to see what to play next. (We may also set aside an hour or so to meet up on Steam and play it again soon.)

It occurs to me that since I have never played any AGEOD game to amount to anything (WW1Gold doesn't count for several reasons), perhaps our next game should be one of those...

Relatedly, I might be persuaded to start a new mp game with someone else, with or without a new Barth game.

(But not picking up UGeek's side of his epic slugging match with Kyz, even though I'd love to see someone continue in his place as the Japanese in WitP:AE. Pretty much everything Kyz was doing at that point, Geek knew about, so reading Kyz's thread wouldn't eliminate someone from contention. But I've played very little of that game, and taking the reins of that stampede mid-stream seems like a bad way to learn it.)

When we visited, Bawb showed me the Elizabethan case his mustache came in, and the impressive Victorian stand he keeps it on at night.

The 'stache itself though was apparently unearthed during a dig at a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall. Apparently belonged to a German auxillary stationed there with Legio IX.

^I've got you now. Bawb never takes the Luftstache off, it's a night/day fighter. Imposter!

Bawb doesn't take off the 'stache. The 'stache takes off Bawb and heads out on its own at night.

I had a moustache one time many years ago. I was kind of paranoid in those days and I thought if I grew one long enough, nobody secretly watching me would be able to read my lips. Didn't work-out too well. The neighbor's Scotty dog thought I was it's mother and kept trying to nurse off me. Which didn't help my paranoia I tell you.

This is all true, as Doug knows.

The 'stache was also the first to be fitted with Lichtenstein radar so that it could operate at night.
