Title: War of Rights, Civil War MMO.........

https://warofrights.com/

War of Rights is a multiplayer game set during the perilous days of the American Civil War, in the Maryland Campaign of September, 1862. Campfire Games is devoted to presenting the gruesome and glorious elements of the period, while maintaining the highest level of historical accuracy and realism as is possible with the wonders of CRYENGINE.

Players in the game will be able to play on multiple battlefields of the campaign, from the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where the Siege of Harper's Ferry took place, to the ridgelines of South Mountain, and to the meandering waters of Antietam Creek at the Battle of Antietam. Additionally, players will also be able to choose from a list of regiments that fought in each battle as well as what rank to fight as, whether they want to slog it out as a lowly private, or if you want to orchestrate the carnage and mayhem as a major general.

Uniforms and bodily features will all be customizable for other players to see as you march and fight in the lines of battle according to the tactics of the period. As a General, you will operate in your headquarters equipped with a map of the battlefield and constantly receiving reports of friendly and enemy positions. Send out new orders to the regiments to move forward, or fall back - all in real time. The orders will move down the chain of command, to the Colonels, Majors, down to the Captains in charge of the individual regiments, all of whom have the option to follow the orders of their trusted commander, or rebel against his wishes and fight as you see fit.

Each map contains a period reconstruction of the buildings, farms, forests, roads, rocks, and Fancy Flowers that existed so players can fight through the streets of Harper's Ferry, in the wooded heights of Fox's Gap at South Mountain, or in the wheatfields and Bloody Lanes of Antietam. Players can feel the whiz of deadly shot and shell fly by their bodies, or hit their comrades or themselves as they scream in a bloody hail from their wounds. Limbs will fly and blood will be spilt once again as Campfire Games brings the fighting of the Civil War right to the player's computer screen!

Any interest?

Agreed, looks great. But will it be a fun, engaging MMO to play? Not saying it won't be but I haven't seen enough to understand how it will actually play out. Will you just hoist your musket while in a battle line with hundreds of other players, face off against the enemy and let the lead fly? I'm interested in learning more.

Mount and Blade: Napoleonic Wars is pretty much just this to an extent, and it seems to still be doing well.

Good point.  But the limited videos I've seen of that game (I don't own and never played it) showed soldiers running around individually or in groups of 2-3 like in a modern shooter, but not in formal battle lines...again, maybe they do but I just never saw the videos.

Mount and Blade Napaloenic has line battle mode.  Where each player is a commander of a platoon of bots rather than a single soldier.

I'm reminded of that scene in "Gettysburg":

"Wu're fightin' fer ar rats"
-Sir?
"Ar rats, wu're a fightin' fer ar rats".

:-X

Sorry, carry on.

This is just a tech demo, I wouldn't get too excited. If don't think its possible to recreate real battles within the context of an MMO. Ok, I won't say its impossible, but they will need to create gameplay mechanics that nobody else has successfully implemented. You need to have the players play realistically or the entire premise is shot. Who wants to stay in formation for an hour, then march for 15 minutes, then fire their musket a couple of times before being blown to pieces by artillery?

If they started each player out as an officer and gave them command of an AI regiment or something, then maybe something might be possible. Even then, the server would be taking care of many tens of thousands of AI entities. Not to mention trying to render that many actors on the screen.

I take it back, its not possible, at least not in a realistic manner. Call of Duty- Civil War? Yes. Realistic battle simulation? No.

See my post on the 51st Regiment (half way down this article)

This was before the mod was renamed from Mount and Musket to Napoleonic Wars and was released officially.

I am super excited for this game. The only thing that bugs me is the title.

War of Rights...the right...to keep slaves? Your racism is peeking

Im sure it is for states rights..... how you get racism out of that is beyond me....i have found that whoever drops the racist card first is usually the real racist!

Your lack of historical knowledge is peeking.

There really needs to be a corollary of Godwin's Law for discussions about the American Civil War...

Truth!

As a 10 year plus reenactor and history teacher I can completely get down with that.

Maybe the "rights" in War of Rights are the rights of slaves that you're fighting to earn?

Or maybe it's just hard to eek out a unique name in modern FPS.

Glass is half full.

I don't think a discussion of what the games title means is going to end well. Considering that Stormfrontish "black savage thread" I saw a few days ago it makes me nervous as to the responses that would pop up.

Charming stuff.
