I have a free mapping program, but you have only a few tiles with it, you need to get tiles online 20x20 and 40x40 , dungeon crafter tiles fit, but any of the correct size will work and there are trillions, you can resize any tile file to the correct size in MSpaint, also there are hex tiles, the Map created can be huge, and you can mix small tiles, big tiles and hextiles snap to grid or freehand.
I was able to create a custom map fairly quick:
The interface is a little wonky and it could use a few more features (borders, text labels, etc) but it might be handy for quick maps. It's certainly light, fast and portable. :)
thx bb, I'm glad its of some interest, did you notice the shift key allows out of position placement of tiles. I did it with dark basic pro.

I had a think, the borders can be put in with a small square tile around your desired map area of hexes,
then one of the hextile sheets can contain text labels and all the hex grid changed to the pink transparent color, you can then use the shift key to freely place text.
You can mix squares and hexes so you can put a planet and a set of small squares showing resources etc at the planets base(just an idea) you can lay many tiles over each other(just make sure the pink is there for the lower tile to show through)
its not a fix but its a sort of way of getting the results, also did you notice the cursor keys move around the big map.
you could also make some small squares letters and numbers on a pick backround and lay down names that way
and I just noticed what you said about it being portable, never thought of that really, but its going on my flash drive :)
deleteing tiles is just passable if you make a mistake you have to relay two or three tiles around the area concerned, but it works.
I could not distribute tiles with the program, unless I drew them myself, that's why there are only a limited number
PS: I like your star map, its really giving the map program some new angles to use
I figured out it was easy to change the borders. I use Paint Shop Pro and recolor the border before creating the tile. Also, once I create the map it's easy to import it in PSP and add labels, etc. The neat thing about The Keep is I can attach a file in it and open it within the program. That way I can even create moveable icons for the maps (through PSP layers) if I want to. It also works with their Fractal Mapper maps.

I could not figure out how to put a moveable in fractal, can a be a pain and ask if you could point me the right way? I can edit a map , and put symbols on it but I don't know how Id move them , unless your saying you move them while in edit mode?
I found in the keep properties external file links rather than store in the keeps data bases, this allows you to run external programs, I got a dice roller I wanted as an external file.
What I found good about the keep it encourages you to create your own adventure, you can do everything from one screen.
Yes, you have to move them when in edit mode. I wish that weren't the case but it does work.

I'm managing to do a selection tool rectangle, then use pointer tool to move, am I doing it right? it seems to work ok.
Ive got it now, the program runs app that are registered in windows to open an image, I had elements not photoshop, but I was creating the images in manga studio, I was wondering why this was happening, its windows reg stuff. I just dropped a bmp and mspaint opened, I'm getting the hang of it.
That's how I do it. You can also copy a tile/icon in your paint program and paste it into Fractal Mapper and move it around.
Another tip you might like, you can create a worksheet for Mythic in Character Sheets and put add it in The Keep. Here's one I use (http://www.aarcentral.com/files/mythic.zip).

yep just installed it and worked great, thanks.here is a tip too, I am getting maps from vassal, just rename the vmod extentions to zip , and unzip them and get the mapboard. just got dawn patrol as a good map for rpgs

that's a great tip, I didn't know you could add external art to fractal, it worked great thx

I know already bb that you will have seen these, but incase, here a link to thousands of fractal mapper 8 assets to install. I do know your a keen RPGer so I probably going to think you know THERE FREE TO USE NON COMERCIAL
gameleaper, thanks for posting your mapping app! Now that I know my way around it I can create floor plans really quick. I've add it to my RPG flash drive. Here's one I did on the fly and loaded into Fractal Mapper. Notice the old school Klingon counter I copied into it. Makes encounters/combat easy.

thx bb, I'm glad its of use, and I'm learning off you how to use it too. They look like computer terminals at the top,you can use freehand placement too, and mix small tiles bigtiles and hexes on the same map, I found lots of tiles online, just resized the sheet to correct size and pasted them in (MSpaint has the option to resize to exact dimentions) I learned from you to put the app on the Flash drive too. you also Hex or grid over an image with an empty square or hextile, and you can multiplace ontop of placed tiles, I just found the place command in fractal mapper where you can place a PNG base map in like dawnpatrol.
I like the way its easy to create star-trek bridge will my tiler, it make me seem cool for once.
I'll post my tilesets here when I finish updating. 8)
Id really like the Maps bb, I think them chairs look comfy, and the computers look like they work.
Ok Ive done a quick ship to use with your bridge. Ive included the files below
I thought each deck could have different hextiles with labels on, I did one quick deck, and I included a blank deck
I'm just having a bit of fun with the tiler :)
Now you have me thinking I could create Star Fleet Battles SSDs with this... :o
Yes SSDs would be nice to see, I was thinking of going from room to room on a ship, Its certainly Fun, I like what its done for my gaming .
I found you can set the background image in map setup then save as a fmp file then open in keep, the use icons , I'm learning as I go :)
I have not seem any other PIM for RPGs yet.
I like this border on the Map, its a simple thing but looks good on star trek stuff, but don't mind me, I'm just throwing stuff in

I think its its just clicked what your saying, are you saying your creating new maps as you play an RPG, because all the created Maps overite the older one in Mapit, so that means a link in the Keep will always use the new map as you make it,
Yes just tried it, the Map gets swapped for the new one, but I had to run Mapit outside of Keep(not a problem, just minimised Keep and run Mapit) so the same Map link in the Keep shows each dynamic update of a Map, I thank you bb.
Ive been playing with it, but I found its probably more correct to do a Map then edit it in MSPaint and save as a PNG, the dynamic map update is to big a map I think if your using a small part of it.
I played with your great tiles, hope you don't mind its so much fun star-trekin
More tiles are better! Once the set it complete it is amazing how fast you can 'sketch' a floor plan with this.

I'm a really bad game artest, I only get the basics. Your mini computers were great to play with. I like it a lot more seeing someone elses imagination in game art, I seem to enjoy the things I didn't see before, keep em coming bb :)
I think the tiler is a good tool for RPG maps, I was looking at profantasy and some others, but the expence and effort to learn, make me like my tiler better :)
Actually, those graphics were just quick and dirty. I plan to clean everything up at some point. :)
I would really like to have a star-trek themed version of the tiller. even the quick and dirty as you say are different to anything I would of managed, it takes more than one person to do a good job, and I'm actually thinking star-trek now instead of world of darkness.
Here's the space tile set I created. I'll post the Trek ship one when I finish it. I'm just about to start a Prime Directive GURPS game so this is perfect timing.
Space tile set (hexes) (http://www.aarcentral.com/files/hexes4.zip)
Yes just loaded it up, looks great thanks. I cant get enough of this star trek .
Here's my work in progress ship floor set (http://www.aarcentral.com/files/BIGFloor.zip).

I like that, the captains chair are superb, and everything is looking professional now, keep me logged.
bb if you make the squares border same pink as the square it makes it transparent, so no border of the square will be placed on the map, now with a borderless tile you can free-paste by keeping shift held down, you can always run a boxed empty square over the map section later, its just an idea for you to know.
Updated the file, I caught an error and added a couple of more items.

Yeah, I was leaving the grids in because I plan to use it for combat resolution with the game counters. :)
Created this in about a minute!

Mine took me about 5 mins, :)
Why I was saying pink border, I did not mean you should do it, I meant its a feature that can be used.
I'm so glad I posted the tiler app now, Ive had so much fun thinking on the games I will play with the keep too..
That looks really good. We'll have to merge our starship tileset.
Since you can overlay several image in one tile, is there a way to remove them one at a time? If I make a mistake I have to erase the entire tile and start over.

Oh, bloody hell! I didn't understand what you were saying! For the furniture and consoles and other 'stuff' I can place the objects
anywhere on the map. No need to make so many versions that way! I really, really like this program!!! O0

I just played with your tiles and freepasted stuff, but here is the merged tileset, but its mostly what you've done. and what you've done with those mini computers is great, but that captains chair is something great.

No once placed it get pressed into the image so you have to erase all the tiles under the cursor.

yes you cant change facing rotation, so you would still need 4 directions, but you can put them anywhere, so put a chair down then freehand a keyboard over the seat and things like that. if you keep one square empty with just a border you can then paste the box over all the map. but I don't use this much just for finer detail

I think with Solo playing, a fast map creation is perfect, and with your tiles its possible to do a ship in seconds
Quote from: bbmike on August 11, 2016, 11:17:08 AM

I also used a small square tile on my ship, you can use small square tiles, and the big square tiles and hexes all on the same map
one more tip, is you can put the map back into the program for editing ontop, you place the finished map back into the user folder and that then will be the default backdrop, board.bmp
if you have a border like I have used , you can put the border file in the user folder for it to be the default backdrop board.bmp
, so if you don't change the position of the Ship from top left, you can keep putting it back into the user folder named board.bmp and keep re-editing it. but it has to be a bmp I use MSPaint for changing from png to bmp etc...
one more tip, if you use the cursor keys to scroll around the Map your editing, it can be a big map, so all your ships can be on one Map file, just don't past ships manualy with an art program because they wont to aligned to the grid, you can then keep plugging it back into the user folder for rediting. you get 2048x2048 pixel map to work with.
